      I've seen this movie countless times. It never gets old. It also introduced me to the music of Cat Stevens, which was perfect for the actors and the story. When young, this film made me feel better during bad times. Now old, I still like it.

    I have never forgotten this movie. I saw it for the first time in 1971, when I was 21 years old. It has continued to be an inspiration in so many ways. A film to turn to and embrace when the world seems scary and uncertain...which is always, and never.

    This is best cuts from the movie, the parts that really explain the reason why Harold & Maude are the way they are. I've never understood why people call this a dark comedy, when it is the most life affirming movie I know. Yes, the beginning of Harold's life is tragic, but once Maude comes on the scene, she shows us all what enjoying every moment of life can be like. And she loves Harold unconditionally with her whole heart, but not more than she has loved others like her dead husband.
    Maude is complete in herself, she doesn't need Harold, certainly not the way he needs her, for he is drinking up her love of life like the thirsty little tree she rescues, and she is the first great love in his life. Those around him can't see his true love, but it is real, and wholesome, and innocent, even their lovemaking scenes are about true love and passion for the beloved, not lust. When he glimpses the concentration camp numbers on her arm, he finally gets to understand how she has become so in love with life, it is her victory over the killers of her loved ones and all the tragedy that was inflicted upon her, and it helps him realize that his own sad childhood is joyous compared to the trauma she has suffered and doesn't talk about.
    And in the end, Harold's grief is just as real as his love, and liberating; death holds no attraction anymore for him for it would be a betrayal of all she gave him. His last staged suicide was a rejection of longing for death (represented by his beloved hearse-mobile) and an affirmation of life, singing and dancing away from everything that used to enslave him. I don't think he goes back to his mother's home ever again, but heads out into the wide world, hopping a freight train, or "borrowing" a car, or hitch-hiking, and taking the adventures that life gives him.

      And then he gets assaulted by a drug dealer and has to resort to prostitution to get by, eventually becoming a heroin addict and dying at the age of 25, life is wonderful, but Maude got to where she was through luck as well, I doubt she failed to realise that.

    • @cpshirling
      @cpshirling 5 лет назад +13

      You are missing the entire point of the movie, if you have seen it. She was in a concentration camp in WW2. Her life was worthless to her captors, she could have died in there or died on the inside surrounded by all the death and lack of hope. There was no luck that got her to to the place of her enlightenment but, the understanding that life is full of both love and sorrow and in experiencing both we find the meaning of what it is to be alive.

    • @darrenpat182
      @darrenpat182 5 лет назад +7

      @@cpshirling Yes, she had hope and a strong mind, but a lot of people do and still meet tragic circumstances, luck is an element in success. She is grateful for the lucky opportunities she had to survive.

    I watched this on the good prescription cough syrup when I was 13 and had a blast. My mom knew I liked old things from the 60’s and 70’s, but she didn’t convince me until the second go round at Blockbuster when she told me that everybody had a big crush on Bud Cort back in the day. Well, needless to say Harold and Maude changed my life and made it more worthwhile. I only watch it with really close friends now. I’ve seen it so many times, but I always have a good cry. I love Hal Ashby too. He’s such a brilliant director and I was obsessed with his films for a long time.

    Ruth Gordon was one of my all time favorites!!! Her portrayal of Blanche in Bonnie and Clyde was brutal to watch, but soooo poignant. And Bud Cort? Stands alone!!!

      Except Blanche was played by Estelle Parsons not Ruth Gordon
