  • My video for the It Gets Better campaign: For the LGBT of the world so you know that you have a place to belong, a community who will love you and a future to live for.
It Gets Better - Have hope
I was bullied at school because I was different in obvious ways and in ways I did not understand, my evangelical 'Christian' parents said I was not trying hard enough and as time went on they saw how different I was. They offered to send me 'away' for help with my 'problem'
I went close to the edge, it was dark and lonely. I felt my soul had no place to belong and my heart had no right to love.
When I came out my parents and their religion disowned me - BUT it gets better, my brothers loved me, my friends supported me and I've married the most amazing man, I have friends whom I love and cherish and support from the rest of my family, I do my dream job and live a full and beautiful life.
Even when your soul aches for a different world, when you mind can not see past the obstacles in your path, and your heart feels hollow, remember you grow up to make your own world, to live your life and to accept and share love on your terms. Namaste.

I was looking for contributions from the UK because I'm thinking of doing one of my own. This was lovely Jon, such a positive message to share, I especially love that you showed that your parents disowning you is not the end of the world, there is a whole other community out there and there are friends who are the family that you choose. Hugs xxx

    Hey Bro,
Once again you make me smile. I just watched this with Rachel and both of us found a little dust in our eyes (someone didn't hoover).
    We love you

    Jon,
    Lovely video.
Your parents, wow! There's another video in there about how to cope with a church and family! Your message that your friends are your family is important.
I am hearing, but I can see you are quite easy to lip-read. Is there a way to add subtitles though?
Thanks for a positive video & a UK one too :)
    Solidarity from a straight guy.

@GJCoyne Thanks for the kind words - I have no idea how to add subtitles, (this is the first video I have ever made) but I have included a synopsis on what I have said on the details of this video and have included this text on the It Gets Better Facebook page.

Thanks for posting that. You have found yourself a good man so now find someone decent and HOT for a certain New Zealand girl please! Must like vodka, watching rugby and Kath and Kim marathons.

May I link to your video from my website at Sheffield Hallam Uni? I'm looking for some positive links for LGBT students.
Thanks for putting UK in the title!

@xz5555xz Thanks for your comments and for sharing your experience with us all. We each have a story to tell and this makes us who we are.
I truly hope your parents take the time to consider and study the texts they hold dear, and reach out to both side of the coin for guidance. There are Christians out there with no prejudices and churches that welcome the LGBT communities without judgement. These may be able to help your parents come to a better understanding and find peace.
    ;)
