Also, to be fair, Chris Seavor improvised the games entire story and cast as he went along. This was also the reason why he did almost all the voices in the game himself. So he was basically writing from the seat of his pants and making things up as the game went.

5:40 Many people don’t get how to use the sunflower properly. You have to push A as you land on the breasts to get a higher jump and not jump off to the side. If you’ve ever played new super Mario bros, you might remember the pinkish red bouncy mushrooms that bounced you higher if you pushed A as you land. Same exact mechanic here.

The entire It's War chapter in Conker is one of my favorite gaming moments in history. I was going through the game mostly blind (ive seen the great mighty poo before and thats it) and genuinely, NOTHING could have prepared me for it. It was late at night and I was loving the game so far, the gameplay wasn't great but it has heart and I was loving the vibe. I'm a very forgiving person, so nothing has majorly frustrated me apart from the awful end of the Spooky chapter with the 3 keys. My stance at the moment was "this game is janky, but fun"
And then I went to war.
The cutscene where you arrive to the warzone and see all your friends die is one of the most powerful moments I've ever seen. Yeah, it's ripped right from Saving Private Ryan, but seeing these cute cartoon characters be BRUTALLY MURDERED was something I wasn't ready for. I've seen bad internet parodies of Mario killing people and Sonic having sex, but to see something developed by the same people that MADE those N64 platformers, at the same time, gives it an eerie feeling that I've never seen replicated. When you play Mario 64, even if you get creeped out by it, you're under the safety blanket of this game being a cartoon platformer for kids and adults. Even with Banjo-Kazooie's cheeky british humor, it's still an E rated game, you aren't expecting to see Banjo GET SHELL SHOCK AS HE WATCHES HIS FRIENDS GET BRUTALLY SHOT TO DEATH. No joke, I had to pause the game and just take a minute to process that cutscene when it ended. I was, not ready for it.
And here's where the unfair difficulty of the game actually works to its favor, because while I'm sure they wanted the chapter to feel like an epic shooter, the bad controls and poor aim made me feel like I was in a survival horror game. The constant brutal deaths made me feel like a helpless soldier. Intentionally or not, they made you FEEL like you were just one soldier biting off a million percent more than you could chew.
And then after that, you fight the boss, The Experiment, who is a FUCKED UP design for a boss, your only genuine friend Rodent is presumed dead, and you have to race back to the boat before the entire island explodes.
And then you pass out, barely making it out alive, and as you are taken to safety, you have a talk with the general. War is a terrible thing. I've heard war is hell, I've seen people die in military shooters, but I've never felt the impact of it until now. Somehow, Conker's Bad god damn Fur Day, the game where you piss on rock people and bounce on sunflower tits.
Live and Reloaded makes the entire chapter a lot easier with more standard shooter controls, and while the combat is more FUN, it sticks way less in my mind. I will always remember It's War and the final speech the general gave.
I dunno how much is intentional, but I salute Rare for giving me an unforgettable experience.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is very far from being a bad game. Yes, it has real problems (the difficulty level varies greatly from scene to scene, the controls in the third person shooting parts could (and really should) be better, some sections can feel tedious, some of the humour is really childish and unfunny, etc), but overall it's a mostly really good single player game, and some of the multiplayer modes are really enjoyable, and they even include very good bots to play against. So yes, it is flawed (and some of the flaws, such as the sometimes inaccurate or badly chosen controls, *really* should have been detected by the beta testers and fixed before release), but overall very good and sometimes hilarious. It is also almost unique (at least I've not seen another action/platform game game that I think can match this one for being so funny and cartoon-like) and I don't think I remember seeing anyone say that they honestly didn't like the game.
I wish the rumoured sequel, Conker's Other Bad Day, had been released.

Just a note on the mechanical fish since you didn't mention it. The head lamp actually stuns them briefly if you shine it in their eyes, problem with that is that besides the short timer you mentioned, aiming the thing is wonky as hell. Batula's mansion also actually has TWO beginners traps to make it worse. If you grab the first key before dealing with the bats in the library then they will just swarm and kill you before you can get through to the entrance hall and there's nothing you can do to fix that besides dying.

From how it was described in Beta64's video on CBFD, it sounds pretty interesting.

    • @A-Dubs398
      @A-Dubs398 11 месяцев назад +7

I really wish Conker had sequels, great opportunity to make parodies of other games, game mechanics, or even the state of gaming IRL. Conker had the potential to be a great meta franchise, could've been something like the Deadpool of gaming, or like the Animaniacs of gaming, but better. I would've loved seeing a new Conker sequel parodying Dark Souls, Resident Evil, GTA, or making fun of Bethesda always having bugs, etc.
OG Conker was a little rough, but sequels could've improved and modernized the gameplay a lot like most game sequels do, and make the stories a little more cohesive. Conker should've been a long running franchise series like Mario or Sonic.

I watched this video for a trip down memory lane about one of my favorite games of all time. Honestly though, you're making it kinda difficult.
Challenging gameplay does not mean bad design. You remind me of childhood friends that claimed the game was cheating every time things didn't just walk you through it. But seeing as you complain about "boring" hallways and such too, you're kinda coming off as someone who just likes to complain. It's not a good look.
This was a first generation 3D game. They were still figuring things out. Remember the camera in Mario 64? Or, like, any other game of that time? Even Ocarina of Time has an occasionally awkward camera, and z-targeting was a revolution that is now pretty standard.
This game featured fully voiced and *lip-synced* cutscenes, adaptive music, an outstanding variety of gameplay, crude hilarity and hard-hitting feels, that few games stand up to even today. Compared to contemporaries (remember BattleTanx?), it was a revolution that pushed conventions and hardware beyond the limits of what was thought possible.
My love for this game is the only thing getting me through listening to you whine about literally everything in it.

I personally have always found the fact that the Panther King is so inconsequential to be one of the funniest things about the game (especially thinking about games like Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and Mario 64). I think a lot of what has aged badly in the game's humor (apart from what might be seen as problematic) is caused by the lack of a specific context brought on by games of the time. Much of the game's jokes are based on clichés that were ubiquitous among platforms of that generation, and I've always felt that the same impact is lost when they become retro games, rather than current ones. Not that the context can't be grasped anyway (a lot of this is obvious stuff), but they don't pack the same punch.

Tbh, that is kinda the problem in a way. If you make a piece of media exclusively about subverting every little thing, that also means you eventually fall into the trap of "See this thing that was good? Let's do the opposite". It can be funny, but it is still a poor writing or gamedesign-choice, having done it on purpose does not exactly change that.

Alright, to me these points sound more like skill issue rather than actual flaws that the game has. However, I do agree that the camera may be a bit frustrating at times; especially when climbing up bat tower and when you're climbing the ropes in the poop section. I also didn't like the mission where you had to push the TNT guy, I actually found that part the most frustrating out of the whole game. I enjoyed a lot of the chapters, spooky and war were my favorite; but honestly the whole game was great for me. I first played it when I was 7 years old, and I never really struggled with the controls or navigating the world, I played it a few months ago and still felt it held its weight. I felt like the game explains the controls well enough for you to be curious enough to figure out the controls in later sections of the game. And I personally think that the voice acting in the game were hilarious and memorable in a way, maybe it might just be my nostalgia but I think they did a stellar job for just a couple people doing the voices. I felt like a lot of the flaws you experienced were mostly because you weren't patient enough when playing it. Over all I think you really should try it one more time, I also think the music from start to finish is phenomenal, although I don't agree with you, your video was also great and you did prove some good points for some parts.

I don't know how to feel about this video as while some of the stuff your saying is true some stuff to me doesn't make any sense so first let me knock out the negatives/criticisms first
    1. Trying not to sound rude here but you kinda suck at the game I can understand some of this frustration if your playing with an OG N64 controller as those are wack but your telling me you needed a guide to figure out the shotgun? Some other examples would be the underwater blades, baby dino sacrifice, bouncing on the sunflower and pushing the rocks by the dancers
    2. Maybe it's just me being stupid but despite your complaints about the difficulty you don't really mention how hard it can be to find out what you do at times but this is probably more of a me bad thing
    3. The ending I can see how both people love and hate it because on one hand yeah the ending is so different and undeserving to a certain extent but to give my explanation on why I like it has to do with the fact that Conker has a simple desire that becomes overshadowed by his and others greed that leads him down a selfish story that ultimately leads to a selfish unfulfilling end
    4. Kinda weird to compare Conker a game released in 2001 to games released decades afterwards feels like kinda weird to me it's sorta like saying "Why play super mario bros when you can play new super mario bros wii" sure one is better than the other but it doesn't mean the other isn't worth playing
Okay now for some positives/things I agree on
    1. Yes some parts of this game are rather ass the war section can be difficult if you can't swap weapons, aim, or avoid tripwires effectively along with the subs and other sections like peeing on the boulders, clangs lair, lava hoverboard ride, and the worms
    2. The humor can be very hit or miss while some I enjoyed the terminator haybale and saving private ryan reference others like the matrix and me so horny reference birdy makes when buying the manual feel off
    3. despite not agreeing for the most part I enjoyed the video it was nicely written and edited
Also sorry if this comment comes off mostly negative

I liked this review. It's interesting to see a modern view point on a cult classic. I will say though, since you didn't care for the original Conker's Bad Fur Day, maybe you'd like the remake Conker Live and Reloaded a lot more. Not only does it have a complete visual overhaul to the point where I find it leagues more appealing than the original, but there are also multiple tweaks to the gameplay. I won't go into all of them, but I will list a couple. The air meter is extended significantly, you have an aiming reticle for everything, and the final stretch of It's War went from unfairly difficult to much more manageable.
However, there's a catch to all of this that makes most fans of Conker view Live and Reloaded as inferior that being it's censorship. A lot of swear words were censored in this version, and a lot of people hate that and think it detracts from the raunchiness of the original. If you ask me however, it still retains most of the raunchiness. You see, swear words on their own aren't funny at all. It's the context in which they're used that makes them funny. Plus, the whole concept of Conker was that a cartoony platformer wouldn't be this absurd, and having most of the swearing be censored kind of makes that more apparent. But all this really depends on your point of view. If you want to play what I believe to be the superior version of Conker, at least from a gameplay perspective, you can play it on literally any Xbox console. It was originally an original Xbox exclusive, but it was made backwards compatible for every generation of Xbox.

    • @alexanderforrest1983
      @alexanderforrest1983 Год назад +1

I solely think the undying defense of the censorship, that is not a massive deal as many make, is from 2 groups.
Nintendo fans who will die on a hill over anything from N64 gen being godly and cannot look past any issues with a game.
Fans who played the game young, and have rose colored glasses from a child game with a cute squirrel cursing.
It works really well in both versions and the remake truly feels good. I tried play Rare Remake version, it hurt a lot and felt bad, but L&R felt like I can enjoy it even with some faults.

I dont understand what you're talking about with the plant boob bouncing... you're the one holding a direction to fall off, all you do is high jump to get on them.. Z and A. Then time the A press at the bottom to jump high enough. You do not need to get higher jumps for multiple in a row.

From what I've seen and what chris and other Rare employees that worked on the game, this game was meant to be a platformer like kazooie or Mario 64. But it wasn't well received when they announced it because it was too similar to those games and people didn't want another cute platformer, so they just threw everything out the window and decided to make it as bizarre and as violent and as weird as possible, which is also why the game got delayed so many times (was initially supposed to release in 1997 and it ended up releasing in 2001) so that's what they came up with.

    - I completely get your grievances with the game. I'm not the biggest fan of the game's humor, either. It definitely relies too heavily on toilet humor and pop culture references to be funny. Even the game's director and Conker's voice actor, Chris Seavor, has stated that if he were to make a Conker game these days, the humor would be dialed back and more subdued. Not so much because of political correctness or anything like that, but just that he's gotten older and isn't the biggest fan of some of the jokes made in Bad Fur Day. I would guess that the Lady Cog joke and the pooping cow are jokes he especially isn't proud of now.
    - I hated the in-game camera as well. It caused some problems with depth perception at several key points in the game, which is insane, because Rare got it right with Banjo-Kazooie! That game has a surprisingly great camera even now!
    - The game resetting your progress back to zero during a setpiece "pissed" me off to no end, especially in Rock Solid and the Lava Chase levels. The game explains early on that "complex mechanics" will be taught to the player if they press a certain combination of buttons, but it doesn't work, I swear. So I went through the game up until Rock Solid not knowing pressing Z made you pee farther.

As someone who's played LEGO City Undercover, it's worth noticing that game never lets the movie references distract from the story at hand, Even when the level is one big movie reference, like the Shawshank Redemption level, there's always a story reason (You need to go into Rex's cell to find clues to arrest him) I've never played Conker but from your description it seems you're just thrown into saving Private Ryan and the Matrix
A great example of how Conker and Lego City do their movie references is with The Matrix, The Heist is the ending level and it's just the iconic hallway shootout. Lego City's big Matrix reference is much earlier in the game where you have to learn Kung Fu, not the most obvious reference and the Kung Fu dojo is a plumber that's a silly spin on Morpheus. And if you don't get The Matrix reference, you're probably still gonna enjoy this bit due to the jokes and the Australian accent + British dialect Morpheus has. Conker just straight references and Lego City makes a loving parody. Making sure the jokes are still funny if you've never seen the movie is more important in Lego City's case since it's a kid's game while Conker's whole premise is that it's an adult game disguised as a kid's game, bloody hell this comment is too long
