  • The Collaborative for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning or CASEL provides a framework to cultivate and advance students’ social-emotional learning and development.
This breaks down the most important SEL skills under 5 competencies. Today we’re going to focus on one of these competencies, self-management.
    What is Self-Management
Teaching self-management skills helps students practice self-control, manage their emotions and behaviors, and use self-motivation to accomplish goals.
Using SEL to first teach self-awareness sets the foundation for learners to identify their emotions.
Step two is teaching self-management, which equips learners with how to react and manage these feelings.
Self-management gives students ownership of their behaviors and the choices that they make.
    Why is self-management important?
Self-management allows students to better motivate themselves and achieve their goals.
    Lesson Overview
Concepts like mindfulness, the self-controller scanner, and breathing exercises help students take ownership of their feelings and behaviors.
At the end of this unit, students should be able to:
Manage their emotions using stress management strategies
    Set personal and academic goals
    Use planning and organizational skills
Demonstrate personal initiative and ownership of their actions
