I had a SLI setup of two 970s. And thought I had much higher FPS in games and everything ran much smoother ... only to realize A YEAR later that SLI was not enabled in the settings...
C22Acolyte how much did it change? Performance wise
I benchmarked my dual 950s... as good as one 970.

Martin Espinoza what about vram though
Same thing with my r9 390 crossfire set up, but with me I still can't get it working.

Claudio Lluberes WHAT ?
I paid 15 bucks for a gtx 460..
Oh, no doubt! I was thinking about going to do a sick SLI rig and I had a couple of those shitty 1080Ti's hanging around, but I wanted something a bit more... vintage and energy saving. I was definitely thinking of these cards. Why not use a card that's a rebadge of something from 2004 in 2017? Compared to the start of the universe, it's the blink of an eye in relative time!
Claudio Lluberes your grandma's toaster can run league at 60fps, that game is one of the least intensive concieved in the past decade
New X299 and X399 motherboards support 4-way SLI
*NVidia disables 3 and 4 way SLI*
Pretty sure that Quadro cards can still do 3 and 4 way SLI.
IsaacThePooper Its still around just not really all that great.
You can still actually sli more than 2 pascal cards. They just wouldn't work well or even work at all) for gaming
IsaacThePooper you can force 4-way SLI in NVCP but it's shit. Mainly aimed at benchmarking and Overclocking. Gaming wise, some games these days don't support SLI anyway

Named after one of the nastiest chronic fatigue diseases.....
I had Windows ME back when I was a kid, I didn't think it was that bad, what was so wrong with it? I had windows 95 beforehand, never had 98
It honestly wasn't that bad. Completely pointless, yes. It was basically Windows 98SE with some new features like System Restore (win2k didn't have this!). With Windows XP coming out the following year, there was zero reason to use Me.
@@MRacer001 I had Windows 10 when I was a kid :/ (Im still one lol)
@@MRacer001 The problem with Windows Me was that it was originally meant to be a compatible upgrade for Windows 98SE users, but it failed at actually being Windows 98SE-compatible, because Microsoft had the brilliant idea to remove some DOS support and break some driver compatibility. Even Microsoft's own marketing department had no clue why the thing existed.
So, it kind of stood on its own... it wasn't true Windows 9x but neither was Windows NT, so compatibility with devices was a nightmare for users.
Try GTX 480 SLI.....bastard could heat an entire house.
LOL yeah, I had a pair of 470 GTX cards and that was bad enough! - I could feel the heat come up from the back of the machine, and through where the keyboard was and Id get hot air in the face that was sickeningly uncomfortable, and Id shit myself thinking the place was going to catch fire!

As you can see in 2:20, all capacitors in the bottom cards are somewhat popped out, sign of malfunction. If you tested the top card in your 1-card benchmarks, it all went fine. Adding the second presumably broken card may induce some malfunction in the whole system. Have you tested the bottom card alone??
doesnt affect it in any noticeable way from experience
H4KD11 - Your 7100 GS SLI setup works fine with broken capacitors?
Federico Perez Ya those caps be blown and a professional like Linus doesn't even notice it
man, caps those days.. my friend used to scour the trash room in his dorm for broken PCs, and most of them worked just fine after replacing the almost always present popped caps.
Now they are rated at a much higher temperature, or are solid state, so it's not that much of a problem anymore..
It can go unnoticed, we all make mistakes. That's why I asked if the card was tested individually.

Maybe it was so unstable because one of the graphic cards was full of bulging capacitors (broken), which make the card really unstable ;)

Fun fact: the acronym SLI and the application of the acronym to multi-GPU setups was owned by 3dfx before nVidia bought them in 2002; although nVidia's SLI is different from 3dfx's in it's functionality.
VooDoo 2 SLI baby!
Yeah, I remember really wanting a second Voodoo 2 card to do SLI to run Quake 3 back in the day... 12MB of video memory oh yeah
i had 2x voodoo2 in sli back before 2000
1x could run games at 800x600
2x in sli could run games at 1024x768
both at 16bit color
MC With MC I was huge 3dfx fanboy, I was like yeah nvidia has 24bit color, but otherwise they are shit and can't do transparencies for shit
Yep, was expecting a couple Voodoo2 PCI cards myself when they said SLI, assuming they meant the original Scan-Line Interleave, not nVidia's reuse of the name as Scalable-Link Interface

the first 7100GS on the ebay listings at 2:30 was the one i had 12 years ago. it lasted like 1 year, untill one day i forgot to disconnect the pc and took it out / in and it shorted. It still worked (ISH) but it would show artifacts and randomly freeze. It was actually meant as a temporal card while i saved up for a better one, so it diyng was actually kind of good news.

Thats awesome! Talk about nostalgia. I remember my old Voodoo2 - which I don't even remember who made.
I would like to to see a follow-up video featuring the 8440GS in SLI because if the 7100 does not work in SLI, technically 2 8440GS's would be the crappiest SLI setup of all time.
Technically speaking, YOU could SLI 2 Voodoo cards, meaning the worst SLI is from that era
SLI from that era actually worked though. So those would be better than what Linus showed.
Voodoos is the best GPU ever, period.
my names andrew what did i do
I had a Monster Voodoo tied to a ATI Rage II. Ahhh those were the days.
Voodoo 2 attached to a GeForce 2MX via loopback cable... man i miss those days.
The voodoo would run the open GL games, and the GeForce would run the DirectX games (or the reverse)
I cannot appreciate it precisely but, seems like the second graphics card got all his capacitors dead (2:18), and seems that is the reason for SLI crash.
WHERE? i keep seeing people yelling at linus that one gpu is broke. i literally can't see it on a 4k screen, the caps look the same on both cards wtf is everyone talking about
@@rustedyoda7339 you're blind. The top of the caps are bulging considerably

The only drawback was NV held out in oem promises that year and flooded the market with numerous options in too short of a period.
Upgrading our system options was also harmed as our oem cards and systems couldn't compete with even the nvidia wholesalers they partnered with at the time.

Since I mostly only played HL2DM and it worked it was GREAT! The setup did however require a reboot when turning SLI on and off.
3:16 LMAO no joke, when Linus said it was a rebrand of the WORST CARD IN THE WORLD (GF6200) I was literally holding an AGP GF6200 in my hands. LOL. Why did i see broken caps on one of the cards? You can see difference in caps heads between two cards. One is perfect flat, but second, all caps are blow up.
Blow up caps will disturb power on the card, and might crash faster.
Fix all blow caps first on the card, then test again for stability.
Cuz you showed the picture of both cards i can see one card is not trustful due blowed caps.
That's exactly what I saw and thought. How could they not notice bulging caps?
Just found your comment after I posted about this thing
yup, i was searching for this kinda comment and its true
Yes, I can saw blow up caps too. If in Power Supply is terrible, can I imagine this in video card.
nerds
Congratulations everyone: you have the answer to a question nobody will ever ask you.
No way lol. Geforce 6200 was the only card I could find for my family PC, with its very outdated board, in late 2007... it got me through a bunch of games as I was really only getting into PC gaming after I played the CoD4 demo I downloaded from Xfire. I even tried to overclock it to get some more out of it but any game would crash if I upped the core even a single hz.
One year later I would have a 8800GT on my first ever custom PC so things went well.
Good times!
nVidia Hybrid SLI. Lets you run on-board GPU with a discrete GPU. I'd love to see LTT workup since I never had good experience with my trials.
SLI is kind of dead, and it is really sad. I specifically bought a laptop that had two cards in it, just to run everything decently, and then realize that about a tenth of my games library actually supports it.
pixelshock
That sucks.
pixelshock Sorry to hear that mate, but what do you play? Most of the games I play support SLI and have pretty good scaling.
Only about a tenth of my games don't support SLI.
Lenovo y500?
SnekSnack Good guess. Y510P though.
*I can't be the only one who felt uncomfortable when he threw the 7100 GSs away at the end.*
Prot07ype ikr especially since it is not his
I actually used that thing for about 5 years and hated it but I'd never toss any of them
My first PC (that was actually mine) was an HP office affair with a GeForce 6200 TC. TC stands for "Turbo Cache", and what that means is it steals system memory, like integrated graphics do. I figure the only reason they bothered including it was because the motherboard had no integrated graphics at all. It was slightly better than integrated graphics, I'll give it that, and it actually ran games from the same era and before reasonably well at low resolution. I gave it away once I upgraded, to some guy that had been playing Ragnarok Online on an old computer with shitty integrated graphics.
Carl Johnson Meh, if anything happen Linus would just bitch slap the owner with a thick bundle of money and he'll shut up. He got a load of cash from Ting.com
What did you upgrade to, Juan? I have an old AMD Socket 939 board (Abit NF-95) with a Geforce 6100 IGP built into the chip-set. It was fine for older games and I still find it very useful testing and silent running (although the heat-sink on the Northbridge gets bloody hot even when not under heavy load). I would say that the only games I could run with it now would be Half-Life 2 and the MAME emulator. But back in the day it was hot stuff compared to the competition.
I used to run two 7800's in SLI, but so few games used it that it really wasn't worth it and the ones that did really didn't see any performance bump. But it sure looked cool for the one LAN party I attended with it!
you most likely didnt use afr mode and lost 200 bucks for a card you never used because of a setting.
@@tarkitarker0815 I knew of that at the time, but I can't remember if I used it with any success. Either way, I got both cars for free 😄
@@neophobicnyctophile8264 didnt hurt as much back then too to have a card you cant use, i was 11 years old and had less stress to buy a midend gpu back then than now.
Dec 6th, 2019 and this video amused the crap out of me, because I wouldn't have even done this when the cards were new.
this is not the worst sli. try a 3dfx voodoo 2 pci cards it was my first setup using a sli monitor cable
Voodoo cards? Fucking lol, good job making me laugh audibly.
Well he's right.
Voodoo was the pioneer of SLI, I remembered having 2 Voodoo 2 cards on top of my S3 Virge, blistering graphics and way too much money spend on the second (compared to what i got) :-P
I still have a couple old ISA 3dfx card, (the ones that only did 3D and that needed to be plugged into another video card that did 2D), those were the good times
lol. Well, you know. the Voodoo FX was built around the concept of SLI on a single card.
They never got past 2 chips on one card, and it sucked, but they designed the thing, rather over-optimistically to use up to 16 chips on a single graphics card. Maybe even 32.
I suspect their architecture would have fallen flat on it's face trying to actually get any meaningful performance out of 32 way SLI, even with the advantage of them all physically on a single board...
But hey, they tried.
Though... They fell apart around that time, and their corpse was bought by Nvidia...
I can only guess that's where Nvidia's SLI tech came from...
WOW ;) 3:25
Jarrod'sTech That's Eddy Wally, a singer (more like the village lunatic) from Belgium.
OMFG! Your profile picture looks like PI because RUclips/Google's AI Bot thing-ie took your letter(s) and then generated your icon!... XD
More like Belgian legend... there will never be another like him
RIP Eddy
I still have an old system standing around that features a 7900 GS. Was a good card back then, the power-saving version of the highest-end GPU.
Linus, I saw you in an intel ad that played before this video. Thought it was kind of neat
