- This split pea soup is what comfort food is all about! Made with a ham bone and meaty chunks of ham, it's hearty, flavorful, and super easy to make at home!
Split pea soup is a must-make recipe after you've cooked a ham for Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. Green split peas are simmered with veggies and a meaty ham bone until they're softened, for a perfectly chunky, veggie-heavy soup with deep pork flavoring. This has always been one of my mom's favorite soups, and honestly, who can resist it? I guarantee you'll definitely be going back for seconds!

What are your other favorite soup recipes that I should make? Give me a few ideas! :) And happy Easter everyone! xo - Lisa
Potatoe soup!
I'd love a recipe for corn chowder!
pozole, minestrone, pho or harira
Lentil soup like my lat Grandma made it, and Chicken soup from chicke leftovers after making a Chickensalad.
Cauliflower soup, cabbage soup
I love this woman. I could listen to her all day. Recipes are great and certainly getting me going on my lifestyle adjustment.
My husband and I went there maybe ten years ago. Their split pea soup was SOOOO good! According to Google it looks like they're still open!
I didn’t use ham, but this recipe was truly fantastic without any meat flavoring ❤ Fresh thyme was also a delicious addition. Thank you for making so many recipes that are easy to adjust to a plant based diet!
I grew up in southern california and always looked forward to eating at Andersons in Buellton. That took me back to late 50s and 60s!
Yes indeed, I remember the Original Pea Soup Anderson's in Buellton, Ca. on the way to Solvang, Ca.
EVERYTHING on the menu came with a bottomless bowl of pea soup, for making HUNDREDS of Gallons of pea soup every day, that soup was truly remarkable. As a teenager I had a Club Sandwich and 3 or 4 bowls, on my Honeymoon I had the same thing with only 2 bowls and on the various Anniversaries I still ate 2 bowls. 😋
I’m going to cook this for my elderly parents and meal prep it for them, my dad absolutely loves pea soup. Thanks for the awesome recipe 😊
Hope they enjoy this soup! ❤️
I don't eat pork anymore. It took me a long time to figure out a good substitute for ham... Smoked turkey wings... Actually any smoked turkey, but I save the wing tips and scraps for soup... any recipe that calls for ham bone or smoked ham hocks, I now use smoked turkey. 💖🌞🌵😷
Me too 😋
I just made it with turkey legs! 10/10
Sounds good I’ll try it
@@user-ee9hl8qo4m smoked turkey is a great substitute. Gives you the same flavor. Happy holidays 🍁
Pea soup still delicious as veggie. Can add a little miso or liquid smoke for even more flavor.
Made the Pea soup today with a meaty ham bone. Easy, worked up quickly, and even cleaned up the kitchen completely while it came to a boil before the decrease to a simmer. Love your recipes. Great, simple recipes with amazing flavors that taste like "home."
Wow! Never expected a Dutch recipe on this channel! In The Netherlands we make this recipe with celeriac root instead of celery and top it with slices of a dutch smoked sausage. We eat this recipe on cold winter days.
That sounds so delicious! Thanks for sharing Lisette 😊
My grocery store now carries a wonderful chicken and apple sausage that would be wonderful in this recipe instead of the ham! Thanks for sharing! 💖🌞🌵😷
It’s also a traditional north of England soup
Andersen split pea soups! Headquartered in Buelton, CA.... and my dad would always say the same thing as your mom. He also (having "come over" from Sweden) called the soup Thursday soup, He told me that as the week went on, proteins were harder to purchase until payday, so soups like split pea started appearing by Thursday;-)
Haven't thought about it in years. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. And I'm headed to the kitchen to make a batch!
Glad this video brought you back down memory lane! Hope you enjoy 😊
Yes, love Pea Soup Anderson on road trips & as destination. Have been many times, and especially to the Buelton location as my parents (& me too) love Solvant. Great recipe great memories. Thanks! Cheers Maggie 😎 California
split peas soup is an all-time favourite since my childhood 🤩
Agreed! I almost forgot how good it is 😂
My grandmother made the best pea soup. I love it !!!!
I made this soup several times and we really love it. It is a quite substancial soup, but we cannot resist serving it with garlic bread. Thank you for the recipe.
I will definitely try this recipe.
Thanks for sharing
Definitely will try!
This is the exact recipe my mom made too, except she used the yellow split peas. Everyone who tasted it just flipped for the flavor and she always was handing out the recipe. Thank you for the memory. I'll be making this for sure after Easter.
Excited for you to make this nostalgic recipe!
I had no idea Andersons had closed down! It was the place to stop on my trips to and from college. Sad to hear they closed but excited to try this recipe.
I was just looking for a split pea soup recipe and yours caught my eye, plus I liked the way you explained things. I have a number of digestion issues and split pea soup is always very soothing to me accept I'd have to leave out the onions. Infact I'm going to make this soup for my birthday on the 24th when I go visiting to my son's house then- thank you!! 🤩😋🤗💖🍲
Rock-solid, no-frills home cooking. Beautifully cooked with fresh ingredients. I get hungry. I love legumes in every form and they should actually be on the table much more often than high-quality and tasty protein suppliers with plenty of fiber. 👍👍
They're the best! Can't wait for you to try this split pea soup 😊
We love soup ❤ Can we freeze the left overs. I can only imagine all the vitamins in this soup. I look forward to checking out your other soup recipes. Thanks for sharing👍😏
Delicious nostalgic favorite 😊
I can almost smell how good this is.
This is pretty much the way I was taught to cook pea soup. I just add celery and potato’s in our pea soup, along with the carrots and garlic. I serve it with fresh hot French bread.
Aw I like the idea of adding potatoes!!
Wow! I made this yesterday and it’s amazing! So much flavor 🤩 Thank you Lisa
Great recipe! Making it again today for rainy weather dinner. Thank you, Lisa!
This is the recipe I've been searching for! I lived half of my life in Carlsbad, California, and there was a Pea Soup Andersen's with the windmill right up the street! from my house. I checked other videos and recipes, and yours is the one I hoped for. I'm going to make it tomorrow! Thank you.
Pea Soup Anderson’s is still good and running! They’re open still!
I loved it. The family loved it also. Im making it again today. Thank you so much.
Tried this soup.
It was delicious!
Thank you.
I tried this recipe tonight, and it was fantastic! It's part of my rotation for sure!
Happy to hear this soup was a success!
Another Christmas is here and I have a ham bone ready for some scrumptious split pea soup. Happiest of a holiday season and thanks for sharing this recipe. By the way I am happy to report our local Anderson’s restaurant is still open and going strong here in Buelton Ca.
I just made split pea soup this week. I can't use ham or other salty meat so I make my soup vegetarian using low sodium broth . It is warming and Yummy! 😊
That sounds like crap. LOL
@@morrismonet3554 Morris , go eat your cat food..
Thank you so much! I look forward to serving this!!!
Can't wait for you to try this split pea soup!
I look forward to making this. Thank you! ❤
Hope you love this one Lorri!
Ahhhhh the childhood memories of stopping to get Andersons split pea soup when we lived in California 😊 this recipe is so much better! Thank you Lisa! Easter Blessings! ❤
I see Anderson’s canned soups occasionally in the supermarket.
I haven't seen them here in WA state yet 🤔
Now you can make your own version right at home with this recipe 😉
Definitely going to try this as soon as possible! Looks amazing thank you for sharing 💗
So excited for you to try this soup Celine! It's so delicious 😊
I made this last night and it tasted really good. I've learned to improvise when cooking, so with the ham I bought a quarter boneless ham at the store and used that. It came out really well but I'll need to adjust the liquid and the heat next time as it came out very watery and didn't reduce near the end.
My mum always used to make this soup in winter and it has long been a favourite. We are in the midst of autumn over here (Australia) so I will be moving to making soup every weekend as part of my meal prep, and you guessed it, pea and ham soup (which is what we always called it) is on rotation! Looking forward to trying out your recipe.
Can't wait for you to try this nostalgic recipe Shonna!
This looks amazing, thank you!❤
Just what i was looking for!
Hope you enjoy this delicious soup Sheena!
I love all your recipes! You actually taught me how to make hardboiled eggs and it works 100%! I've passed it on to many people and if I tell you how many people have irregular times on making it eggs. Big Thank you again!
Lory Earles Staten Island NYC
That looks fantastic! Split pea soup was my favorite growing up. I certainly do remember Anderson's!
Loved stopping and having their split pea soup.
It's the best!
I made this about a month or more ago. It was the best split peas soup I've ever made!@
Thank you.
All the best for 2024!🌿
This is a GREAT recipe and also works substituting green beans instead of split peas. 😎
Looks delicious! There's still a Pea Soup Andersen's in business in Santa Nella! Such a cool place to visit and eat delicious and classic pea soup, and their danishes are great too! They also have a gift shop ☺️
I remember my father and I always going to Andersons. Best pea soup
Split pea is one of my top faves. Big dish in Finland. I have always made mine with my instant pot.
Great recipe for a cold NY evening! Simmering now, can’t wait to try it! Smelling delightful 😋🥣
Thanks for the recipe! Used smoked bacon instead of ham and it is delicious!
Hope you love it Alexandra 😊
That sounds good too
Another yummy recipe. Takes back to my moms soup.
Sweet Italian sausage soup with couscous! Just made split pea soup 3 days ago so good. 😊
I feel comforted already just from watching the video.🍲😊
I grew up in the Bay Area, CA, and we often visited grandparents in LA. Also visited Andersons where I fell in love with this soup! Thanks for this recipe, it brings back good memories! ❤
Definitely a nostalgic recipe! Hope you enjoy Sarah 😊
Just like The Anderson Pea Soup Restaurant's Pea Soup we would had at the Restaurant in Mammoth Lakes, CA! Super delicious! Brought back wonderful memories. I am making this soup again tonight. I got a fresh Ham Bone from the butcher shop. Thank you!
I adore split pea. I’ve been addicted to your lemon lentil chick pea recipe. Obsessed.
Me too regarding the Lemon Lentil Chickpea Soup!
I not only do I remember California’s Anderson’s Split Pea soup restaurants, but also as a child went on yearly day trips up the coast to Solvang. Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful childhood memory..
Thanks for this nice sharing 💕😊
Just loss my Hubby 2 months ago, trying to keep myself busy, so I am excited to try something new, with this new journey of life!!! God Bless!!!
I am so sorry to hear about your loss! I hope you find new inspiration in the kitchen to cook delicious meals for yourself ❤️
Looks great can't wait to make it 😊
Looks great! I'll be trying thus recipe
Looks yummy, I love your simple and delicious recipes. Lentil soup is my favorite. will try this one for sure
You'll definitely love this recipe then 😉
Wow that looks amazingly good! I usually just cook my split peas with chicken stock and add potatoes, salt & pepper. This will be my new split pea soup recipe.
Excited for you to try this version 😊
YES!!!! Gotta add the potatoes.
Very comforty yummy
Split pea soupe is by far my favorite ❤
There are still 2 Pea Soup Anderson's in California!!
I do remember the Andersen Split Pea Restaurant (I’m 75). It was a ways off the highway though in Solvang, a sweet little hamlet, and I was doing my trips from Santa Cruz to L A and back to visit my parents and seldom had the time. But that soup was heaven in a bowl. Life goes so fast Lisa. Savor it.
This soup so yummy
Excellent recipe and method for making. Loved the end product! The only thing I did differently was to simmer my ham bone in water overnight and then I used that gelatinized broth in place of chicken stock. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
I can't wait to make it this weekend!
Excited for you to try this one Lynda!
I say, bravo! Well done! Looks like it tastes amazing!
Great job!
Yes, I remember stopping by the Anderson Pea Soup on my way up north. I loved their 🫛 🍲 pea soup. Thank you for sharing this recipe ✌️❤️😊🙏
Then you'll definitely love this one!
@@Downshiftology I bought everything today and forgot about the pancetta.
Looks so delicious 😋 I'm definitely gonna make this. Since I don't have ham bone, I'll use pancetta.. Thanks Lisa!!
Pancetta will taste just as delicious 😊
we loved pea soup andersons - that windmill and the flower gardens in the hills behind it were a treat when driving down to San Diego!
Always a nostalgic drive!
This soup looks delicious
I use an immersion blender and blend at least half the soup for a richer, thicker consistency ( before adding the ham) It’s always always like most soups and stews better the next day.❤
I'm going to try this ❤
WOW! I am bummed that Andersons is gone---I ate there a few years ago and loved it. Thanks for a great recipe.
Yum-o!
Exactly my words! 😊
You really do a good job! Thanks.
I used smoked turkey in place of ham. I left the pot simmering for about 40 minutes, and the soup looked like mush😮 watching your video let's me know it's perfect 👌 ty
Awe!!! Made me think of my mom! She used to make this after Easter with the left over ham bone. She’s been gone for a few years now. I’m not a big pea fan, but I might just try this recipe.
Thinking you should make this in honor of your mom ❤️
I made this soup to thank everyone at the "after moving me" party. There was one guy who came up to me and said he didn't like split pea soup. I apologize, but I was moving and had nothing else in the fridge. I told him to try it. It was really good. Later, I saw him with a second bowl or was it his third? It's worth a make. Also, plan to make ham sandwiches on the side. Really good soup and sandwich combo... That way, if you still don't like it, you won't starve! Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself 😷.
Great recipe! I purchase ham bones from Honeybaked Ham stores specifically for soups like this one. And Andersen's still exist and they also sell their soups in cans at the store. Thanks for the recipe!
This looks amazing. I like various bean soups, pasta fagioli soup, Italian & Mexican style soups. I guess I just like soup 😊
Soup always hits the spot 😉
I just used your recipe and I doubled it planning on freezing the soup. I did use a crock pot but it seems to be an easy swap
Going to try this today!
PERFECT! tyfs
Andersons is where I grew to like split pea soup too...... Thanks for the recipe
When searching on tube for Polish version of this soup (Grochówka) come across your channel ... your channel is awesome and your split pea soup is how i remember from my own childhood ;)
All-ready made it three times, thank you and good luck with your channel :)
Very yummy recipe video
We remember Anderson's Pea Soup! Wow that brings back some memories, for sure.
One of the few great recipes from our virtually non-existing Dutch cuisine ... thin slices of pumpernickel covered with mustard and bacon are an excellent side dish this soup!
OK I’m gonna be using this recipe as my first time making pea soup all the ones I’ve looked at this one looked the best
Just made this receipe! Yummy thank you😊
Glad you enjoyed this split pea soup recipe!
we used to go to the one in Buellton, you sure brought back memories 😊
Making tonight! Looks so good 💕🥰💕🥰💕
Hope you enjoy this split pea soup!
It's inspired me so I made split pea soup for tomorrow. ❤
OMG, yes pea soup anderson and the windmill! It was a huge landmark in Carlsbad. I loved it so and even tho we still have the windmill, the pea soup anderson is gone and I miss it and wish I could take my kids there. You are the coolest Miss Lisa; thanks for reminiscing with me 🥰
I grew up in Southern California and my family went on several vacations up the coast. The town of Buellton, CA along Hwy 101 is where the Pea Soup Anderson's restaurant was located. Last time I was there was over 20 years ago but I hadn't heard they were out of business. You used to be able to buy their canned Andersons Pea Soup in supermarkets but I don't think you can anymore.
There are still a couple of pea soup Andersons open in California!!
