- Luton has been crowned as the worst town by the media and press. It is not far from London, just 30 miles away north-west and a half an hour train journey, The foundation of the city goes back to the 6th century. It was founded by Anglo-Saxons during medieval times. Its name first appeared in the 8th Century as LYGETON.
This town is dominantly migrant community. I heard lots of undesirable stuff about it and decided to travel to see it from close eyes. The first wave of migration happened in the early 20th century, Irish and Scottish came to Luton and then it was followed by Asian and eastern European mainly from Romanian. As you are walking on the high street you can sense from the speech how diverse and densely populated this town is. You can witness the dumped rubbish outside the city. The shops are abandoned and poorly maintained. The houses are in a state of destruction and ruins. It is surely one of the most deprived areas I have ever seen. It broke my heart to have witnessed a deaf man sleeping rough on the street. He doesn't deserve to be left out on the street . The council has a duty of care to look after vulnerable people.
Overall the people are very friendly and happy and easy to chat but you can sense the level of poverty the town suffers.

I'd rather spend a week in Hell than an hour in Luton. The whole atmosphere of the place is off-putting. Probably a racist comment, but you feel like you need to take your passport with you, so many non white/Uk natives, its like entering another country.
So true. Each time I go to Luton ( out of obligation) , I feel like I am travelling to Islamabad.

I worked in Luton for about 9 months - it was skanky. Too many immigrants, it was dirty and filthy, it stank and it had a very unsafe feel about it. Don't bother going there.

Hard to judge a 18 minute video but what i saw no worse tham most large towns or cities.
There’s nothing wrong with Luton apart from racism, I hv lived in Bristol, Dover, Birmingham, western supermare and I know there’s nothing wrong with Luton. Luton is vibrant, Luton is not even a city but the expectations are very high, there are some uk towns u go to and Uber doesn’t even exist there, but in Luton u can get an Uber at 3am in the morning, there are some uk towns u go to and u would struggle to find a place to eat at 9am, in Luton 6am u would find restaurants open, in Luton some clubs open 7days a week. The fact that RUclipsrs that it’s their first time in the towns walk around with their phones holding it out above their heads as they make videos yet nobody has ever snatched it or tried to rob them, should tell you crime is very minimal in this town, how then do people who say it’s the worst in England come to that conclusion?
So sad as it used to be a vibrant town back in the 80s
Migrants rules
Lutin has city levels of multiculturalism and deprivation in a small town in a rural region so it sticks out. That is the problem. If Luton was in London or bordered London or eas part of another large urban area it'd be fine.
Respect to you for getting out there and documenting this. Those that are able move away. Local and central government need to be held accountable.

Immigrants lower standards run down areas create dirty urban when they come with no money
If you guys want to make Luton the worst city to live in the world please make it, Luton is a small town with a very dense population, Luton town is amongst uk top 20 most populated town or city. Luton population figure is grossly underreported, because many people for personal reasons, and households don’t want to declare the original number of occupants in their houses, even with that Luton is amongst the top 20 most populated towns/city in the whole uk. If it’s that bad nobody would want to live here.
When Covid ended in 2021 SMEs in Luton were amongst the first to stand on their feet. The people giving Luton bad press should continue while the people who know what’s going on continue to make their money.
In uk there’s a stabbing problem, in major towns people are scared of bringing out their phones to avoid it getting snatched, there are towns u go to in the uk and u take out ur Rolex watch or gold chains before walking in public, yet Luton that’s the supposed worst to live in, every 2 weeks there’s RUclipsr coming to make video in the town holding their phone in the air, yet not a single one has ever recorded or experienced any incident in uk worst place to live in. You guys should think for yourselves.
Thanks for your comment, it has been pleasure to read and hear from residents who live in Luton. In most cases the media is giving bad press to some towns and cities. I found Luton super multi cultural and divers however not dangerous. Friendly and approachable people are living there. As you said all youtuber is taking their camera out ... but no body has ever reported any incidents.

Worst place to live you would not want to live compare to London, I was around Luton everyday walking too much. My dream is to travel abroad such as Dubai or America.
An excellent video, showing both sides of Luton The boarded shops are in the High Town area which is long due a regeneration the same as the Bury Park area. Luton Borough Council spent nearly £20 million on homelessness last year and £20,000 on flytipping. If you come again make your way to Stockwood, Memorial and Wardown park and the surrounding areas, you will see another side of Luton which is rarely talked about.
Well i never did Slough has been named the worst town, so make up your mind which one is it, i live in slough for about 10 years and oh boy it was bad and as each year passed it went down each time and now its an overflow to London so even more bad news.

This is what I say, he is not the first to come to Luton, RUclipsrs are coming to Luton every 2 weeks to make videos, yet none has ever experienced any incident like that in the so called worst place to live in. None has ever been attacked in this worst place to live in, how then did they come to that conclusion?
Luton born and bread nothing posative has been done for years a bus inter change built with no toilets but a flower garden built at a vast expence we had a fab town in the 60 and 70

I've been there in November. For me, it was a shocking experience. It was like a walk through a postapocalyptic future where white Christian people were erased from the Earth. If this is Britain today, I am glad I am not a part of it.
Please use the past simple tense when speaking about finished past like “in November” I was there in November. I’ve been is for something that started in the past and is not finished. I’ve been here since November. ( and I’m still here) hope that helps 👍

I’m from Luton born and bread from lewesy farm so people there know how bad a place can be I would say your just scraping the service of how bad it can be there is good parts of Luton like caddington up that way up in the north of Luton the town centre bury park marsh farm Lewesy farm there’s other places around that region is quite bad not just poverty but gang related Also on a daily basis it is very hard to explain what luton is like unless you been there but someone said it was like walking in 8 miles in Detroit Michigan which is not a far fetched comparison
And the post code wars are so stupid especially with between marsh farm and lewesy farm but I left in 2009 to move up north so it’s all good but do have family still live in lewesy farm though

If Luton is like Detroit do u think a first timer would pull out his phone for hours to make videos in the town centre and nobody snatched it from him or gangs waking up to him to rob him. Luton has had dozens of RUclipsrs come to make videos in it yet no single one has ever recorded or experienced any case of violence or abuse. Yet according to you bad things happen in Luton on a daily. Make it make sense

I have family there my half brother & half sister & their children. I lived there for a few years working in fw woolworths in my youth & had great memories of partying with my black friends (west indian) & it was ok. Recently I went in the Arndale centre shopping & recently again their hospital, I thought I was in an african or even more so an asian country & was outnumbered about 5 to 1of me. I felt like a minority in my own town & country & boy the place looks like a crap hole, dirty & unattractive. The inside arndale market has zero english food or people I can no longer go back to relive my great memories as it is upsetting to see it in decay. Erase it & rebuild with a few more english speaking white people to make it at least 50% white.
The town has become incredibly multicultural and super diverse community. I understand where you are coming from ...

@UnleashDreams can I also point out recently on the news, Spanish holiday destinations bought by British people retiring or wanting to live there have also annoyed Spanish citizens fed up with pushing up Spanish house prices & taking over. I sympathise despite being British myself, we don't like it happening in England with a house shortage pushing prices higher. Luckily Labour are in power & already building a new city 7 miles from Bedford next to the A1, plus the newish city of Milton Keynes 10 miles on our other side which now massive. We need more homes like the Spanish do. Places change quickly within a few decades. I Know I used to live in the last house in Kempston as a 7 year old, now it is in the middle of Kempston. Sigh.

I used to cycle from Dunstable, north of Luton to London..sometimes took the train and must say how horrible the place is. Very expensive too travelling by train! Have you tried Clacton-On-Sea ? Try it out!

Damn it looks shaky alright, Im taking my daughter to London and I booked hotel in Luton to be near airport I hope we come back in one piece luckily its only for 3 nights. However If I see the deaf guy at the station Ill give him a few quid.
Every 2 weeks RUclipsrs and TikTokers come to Luton to mk videos, I hv answered questions from one of them but they always cut that part out cause only negativity sells. If you have had 50youtubers come to a place to make videos and they didn’t record or experience any incident, even when they are holding their phones over their heads in public where anybody can just snatch it and run away. If they haven’t experienced this, doesn’t that tell you that somebody is lying about Luton?
I would have thought there are more deprived places in northern England. Stoke on Trent , Grimsby, Horden and Hartlepool to name a few.
From Hull, but this doesn`t look bad to me. The centre is a little dull, even compared to Hull, but it`s a much smaller town. The estates and surrounding areas look to be generally better though. Personally, I think one of the main reason these areas get a bad name is veiled racism, there are definitely poorer places in the UK than this.

Lived in L Town for 20 years, it's just like many other places in the country. There are some really nice parts of the town and some really awful parts of the town. The town centre is becoming a no go zone, but I never liked it anyway. I've met many lovely people in my 20 years there, friends for life. It has its problems, like many others places. I've managed to get my family out of it, but because of friends, we all go back, to visit. I don't think it's as bad as some places up north. Covid saw off a lot of shops and I used to live in high town, over the past 5 years, that area has really declined. It is sad, apparently it was a wonderful town back in the 50's and 60's . I have to admit I've had a few scary moments in the 20 years I lived there. Machete wielding nutters, aggressive men in train station, weirdos with knives in my back garden and wouldn't walk around at night alone. It's not a safe place. I'm glad we got out
