I'd be curious about that as well. My guess would be that maybe they made them simultaneously. While the detail work on the hero console was done, another team had the rough measurements and was told to just add some sort of box up there so the actors could play with it for distant shots. I could also see them truncating the box for safety reasons (e.g. so passengers can't hit their head). But I would like to know the REAL reason too :D
Thank you so much to Knight Rider Historians for the detailed explainations and props breakdown for the episodes listed so far. Really enjoying each episode. I was just wondering who owns K.A.R.R 3 from Kitt versus Karr and if there have been any developments with tracking down the Hard Top Stunt Car from Kitt Versus car. I remember a news broadcast from around 10 years ago in the UK proclaiming to have a screen used Kitt ( this was not the convertible which was temporarily at the car museum in the UK) I was just wondering if you guys have had any luck in tracking down the hard top stunt car?
What a great video ! QUESTION : Why would the producers opt to crush the cars ? To stop them being used in other productions ? Did no principal actors keep any cars ?
They got a lot of new cars which were on a derailed Train and couldnt be sold anymore, and so had to be scrapped (pretty sure this was ultimately for insurance reasons). The Production team secured these for making the Series, but they had to be Scrapped eventually or Universal would have gotten in legal trouble. So this just extended their time a bit.
People keep asking why the cars were crushed. You have to remember that old stunt cars have pretty much zero value when a show is winding down, and preserving them comes at a cost. Also, losing control of your props means they might be used in a way that tarnishes your legacy (imagine an authentic KR porn or someone getting killed in an accident with one). These things become valuable with the passage of time, but making a show is a business and the decisions made sense at the time.
If you think about it and from what I’ve learned over the years, about 25 Trans-Am’s and Firebirds in various configurations did all the heavy lifting for the whole run of the show. That’s an incredible accomplishment for a little over 2 dozen cars. AMAZING!!
Trust doesn't rust is an all time favorite. The sound and editing when they are speeding off the beach is epic. Then the chase.. Would have loved to have seen KARR captured and reprogrammed to be teamed up with RC3 like War Machine and Iron Man. They really missed a great opportunity there.
Pretty neat that 2 KARRs were used as KARR again. Sad none that were painted two tone survived though. KARR was one of the best villains in film history
Too bad k.a.r.r didn't come back in the original shows run for a 3rd time, or the fact that the original show didn't last long enough for that to happen.
@@morganrussman Around 2006/2007 I saw some articles saying that they had plans to bring K.A.R.R. back again on the 5th season. We can only wonder and remember would great it was to have this show.
Of course, not only did the car change from a season one to a season two, as well as the yellow scanner light, but also his voice changed, from Peter Cullen (optimus prime) for Trust Doesn't Rust, to Paul Frees for KITT vs KARR :-)

These videos are excellent. Thank you for all your continuous research for Knight Rider. Do you gentlemen know if 80’s model Trans-Ams are going to be used for this alleged upcoming big screen film of Knight Rider? Thanks!
I loved KARR so much I made a Delorean version like they did with KITT in Ready player one except mine is based on the Degoryun From Carmageddon Max Damage. Only mine isn't completely evil as he is rebuilt with some of KITT's leftover parts after he was destroyed so he now has some level of a conscience and is like the terminator in terminator 2 where he learns value of life while still being reckless and rebellious at times. It's still in the works and I am still writing his story as he's part of something else that isn't really knight rider and is more a tribute to 80s culture.
Interesting. When I watched "Trust Never Rusts" and saw that Kar was destroyed. I tried to understand how the car was rebuilt in season 3 for "Kitt vs Kar" The only thing that I could think of that could make me believe that Karr was rebuilt was by Garth Knight and his cohorts in Goliath I & II. You see him looking at Kitt in the videos and studying him. Or he rebuilt Karr in "The Return of Goliath" in Season 2 and decided to hide Karr at a secluded area at the beach to pick him up later, but then he either ended up in prison or drove off the cliff with Goliath and that was it. This is why I wish the studio would have done a season 5 to possibly answer these questions because at the end of "Kitt vs Kar" you get a distinct feeling that you haven't seen the last of that evil vehicle. It's too bad that the Karr vehicles were destroyed and couldn't have been sold to a collector or put in auction. I'm sure they would've sold.
You guys should find and acquire the original hero car and restore it with the John Ward nose, that would be a rare and awesome gem to display to everyone.
hearing the theme song brings me back to my childhood ( reruns ) i was only 2 or 3 when the show aired .. how i longed to have a black ( kitt ) trans-am
That was really cool, and I rally liked how you used the music from the scenes in the background :) I always loved the music and all the little different versions of the theme song for different scenarios, so its great to see the images with the corresponding music from the episode!! :) Please keep doing it!! :D
I dunno. At 3:49 they end car 4 description of karr with a still saying that car was destroyed. Then begin car 5 description saying karr jumps over kitt and it's literally the same scene half a second later saying karr is jumping over kitt and kitt is the car they just said was karr and was destroyed 😆
_Trust Doesn't Rust_ is still my favourite episode, with an early appearance of the infamous double bonnet kit cover. The info about the 'flivver car' was good to know, and one of the jumps (KARR crashes through the shutters over KITT, my favourite shot) looks as if the front slightly lands in mid air, lol! And as a personal preference much preferred KARR with the red scanner bar and single paint scheme. Admittedly KARR in 'KITT vs KARR' was more sinister and sociopathic (stopping Eddie's pacemaker and going on to lure Christie to a completely blackened interior, as she screams and KARR screeches away shows this best!) but a plothole (well... sort of) about the existence of KARR is that the Foundation happens to have purchased and developed a previous Trans-Am before renovating Michael's personal car from the pilot episode?
About 6 years ago an Australian TV channel showed every episode of Knight Rider. It was at a graveyard timeslot about 11PM. I have no idea why they showed this. I found it by accident about half way through season one. I went oh yeahhh! People should keep an eye on free to air channels because you never know!
I was actually talking about KARR on facebook in an 80s group yesterday. I was showing my knerdiness because someone posted a picture of KARR and optimis prime saying they were voiced by the same person, only they posted a pic of the 2 tone KARR from kvk. I explained that peter cullen did voice optimus prime and KARR in the season one episode trust doesn't rust but that the KARR pictured was from the season 3 ep and voiced by Paul frees.
Thanks again Joe for another insightful video! Always liked KARR with the amber scanner but in all black though. And the Season 2 style dash of KITT/KARR is my personal favorite.
Now that was cool and I enjoy it .Okay one the first scene of Kitt vs Karr I thought that rear end was way to high it was the one with the high drop downs well now I know why and knowing is half the battle .My first vehicle was a A M C eagle blue station wagon and you could pump up the back shocks with air to pump the rear end up just some old car info okay later guys

I used to work at a mall in Houston. A guy that worked at Radio Shack dove a K.I.T.T. car to work almost ever day in the early 2000’s. It was identical inside and out.
@@marimisheru I’m not sure. The store went out of business and I never saw him our the car again. But it was surreal being generation x’er and it also been one of my favorite shows growing up in the 80s, seeing it a few times a week for about two years was crazy. The owner was a pretty cool guy too. He didn’t mind standing there talking about it.
Now that's a proper K.A.R.R. introduction. Great to know what happened and also sad. But since they had to destroy the cars after the show ended, there was no choice. Interesting. Those two-tone weren't destroyed during the filming, but they all were destroyed after the show. Now, this may sound selfish but I gotta say it. I miss the original version of both episodes (and I would say also Goliath Return, but that's for another time). That's because I still remember the original version back in the 80s when we saw (Thrust doesn't rust) K.A.R.R. falling down and screaming out loud "No" followed by that v8 engine revving beautifully. Now the second time, I still remember even the original used soundtracks on the episode that were replaced. I got to know back in the 2000s decade (I think that David said it) some scenes were cut. Like the one K.A.R.R. tricked Mandy and kidnapped her. In the original version, we see him going really far as the camera raises really high (great scene, I don't know why it was cut). And that scene K.A.R.R. spins his front wheels for around five seconds before he goes breaking the door and trying to kill Michael. That's right around five seconds and not just that small spin. That was the impact that made him so evil. And of course, the final collision. I remember this one since I saw it the first time in the 80s, the second time around 92, and the third time on 95 (twice that year). We still can hear that beautiful sound of the cars when they jump. In this case, we hear 5 times. That's because on the original version we see one last time K.A.R.R.'s front one last time before exploding while K.I.T.T. moves forward like the great winner of the battle. From what I noticed, it seems that all (or almost all) episodes had cuts having the time reduced to 48 min approximately. Thank you for sharing this.
K.A.R.R. had 2 different voices and I recognized one of them and I always rooted for K.i.T.T. because he's the coolest car I've ever seen in My life and he's has the best lines in Knight Rider history

I love these deep dives, as well as the episode reviews. Please, keep up the great work.
THIS IS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE SHOW!
So many more KARRs I honestly thought it was still only 5 on the second show, and that was including the model in KARR's final moment.
Thanks again guys! Incredible journey for one of the KARRs to go through become the acid gutted KITT to becoming the SPM close-up prop car.
So many details to look for when trying to figure this out. Good work.
I remember liking KARR's look much more than KITT's back then... the yellow scanner was really cool. and the 2 tone paint job too!
Yeah
Your knowledge of the various different kitt cars is as impressive as my knowledge of the various different Parahawks Featured In The 1989 James Bond The World 🌎 Is Not Enough Where Lucky Me Know The Hidden Secrets Of The Famous Parahawks Featured in that movie.
Wow! Very interesting Joe, thank you! That's a great addition to your commentary format. Some kind of flashforward. It would be interesting to know about Super Pursuit versions of KITT 😉
Wow, thankyou KRH! Sorry to hear these cars got crushed.. Hey maybe one of the Remaining KiTT cars could just have things changed like the Scanner light and the two-towned paint added, but then there is also the voice box for KARR.
Thanks for answering the questions I had in regards to K.A.R.R I always wondered what ever happened to them so sad that most of them were destroyed at the end of knight rider awesome and informative video thanks again
Excellent info Joe! Its sad to learn that all of the two tone K.A.R.R.'s were crushed. I didn't know there were some manual cars in the show! Cool! I'm really excited for the commentary for the episode K.I.T.T. vs K.A.R.R.
AMAZING!!
Thank u so much I've been watching KR episodes and couldn't for the life of me figure out wth the front mount under the bumper was used for
Trust doesn't rust is an all time favorite. The sound and editing when they are speeding off the beach is epic. Then the chase.. Would have loved to have seen KARR captured and reprogrammed to be teamed up with RC3 like War Machine and Iron Man. They really missed a great opportunity there.
Fascinating analysis brother on this episode
Pretty neat that 2 KARRs were used as KARR again. Sad none that were painted two tone survived though. KARR was one of the best villains in film history
To me, the very best.
We saw that the computer remained working, so definitely we would have an even more dangerous vehicle coming back for vengeance+war. It didn't happen because NBC decided to cancel them.
@@joaoluistavares6046 it is too bad that the show never got the 5th season it should have had. We could have gotten a plot where garth and K.a.r.r both team up, but, sadly, we didn't.
@@morganrussman You know. I was actually avoiding saying that. Both together would have been devastating and too much for Michael and K.I.T.T. to handle. It would have to be either a three-part episode or a sequence with different episodes. At the same time, it would be great.
But yeah. We can only wonder and remember would great it was to have this show.
I love all these videos. Please keep them coming!
Part of me wishes KARR was used more, but I'm also glad he wasn't _over_used. Sometimes quality is better than quantity.
Of course, not only did the car change from a season one to a season two, as well as the yellow scanner light, but also his voice changed, from Peter Cullen (optimus prime) for Trust Doesn't Rust, to Paul Frees for KITT vs KARR :-)
That's right. Paul Frees made also a great job.
the Darker more Evil Ominous, version in my Opinion. and will be the Voice in my Replica. after voicing Optimus prime. i just can,t hear Cullen,s voice n think of him as Evil. lol
@@timkipping7454
It's very interesting. When Peter Cullen played on Thrust Doesn't Rust, he was still more natural. Only when he went to Optimus Prime, as he said, he decided to do a voice similar to his deceased brother. That truck voice is just great...and yes, I also can't see that voice as an evil one.
I always tossed the yellow scanner up to the sun damage from the beach.
@@orionpax3535 Nothing wrong with that. K.A.R.R. collided (after falling from very high while screaming "no") to the ground. Then stood there for around two years. Too much sun, a lot of sand. It created some damage to the scanner...
Great video! Kitt vs Karr is one of my favorite episodes.
Fantastic, Joe. You are outdoing yourself. Impressive, what you know about Knight Rider.
I love these videos on documenting the fates of the cars used.
Great information Joe I throughly enjoyed watching and learning from this
hearing the theme song brings me back to my childhood ( reruns ) i was only 2 or 3 when the show aired .. how i longed to have a black ( kitt ) trans-am
Never took note of the tan A-pillar car before. Now I will keep my scanners peeled 🤣👍🏻
I love all of your videos Joe! Very informative and enjoyable! ~ Gene
That was really cool, and I rally liked how you used the music from the scenes in the background :) I always loved the music and all the little different versions of the theme song for different scenarios, so its great to see the images with the corresponding music from the episode!! :) Please keep doing it!! :D
It's awesome that you guys can tell us which car was used when and what each car's fate was.
I dunno. At 3:49 they end car 4 description of karr with a still saying that car was destroyed. Then begin car 5 description saying karr jumps over kitt and it's literally the same scene half a second later saying karr is jumping over kitt and kitt is the car they just said was karr and was destroyed 😆
Identical antagonists like Garthe Knight and KARR were so 3 seasons ago! Maybe they meet each other one day.
Mine too part of why I hope at least one studio made 2TV dash still exists somewhere.
Great video Joe!! I still prefer K.A.R.R. over K.I.T.T.
Love what u n AJ are doing on this channel. Love this show so much. Love the history n the BTS sessions boys. Keep em coming. KR Fan Australia. All the best boys. Whats happening to the Studio Kitt dash?? Would love to see a progress vid. AWESOME WORK.
Dumb Question. Why the heck did they crush the cars? They should have been put in an auto museum/s. They are a HUGE peice of history.
The crushed cars were part of the train derailment. Pontiac didn't want to take the chance that any of those cars would ever be sold to the public. So when filming ended the cars were crushed.
@@johnkramer7161 Oh. Ok. I understand. That is very sad to hear but I respect Pontiacs decision. Do correct me if I am wrong but I never knew the cars in the series was from a train derailment. Thank You Sooo. Much for the reply. It is sad news but I am glad you replied. Thanx so much for replying. Thankfully I can still enjoy them. Though even if it is on TV or DVD. Thanx again for the reply. It is greatly appreciated.
@@-A-Hybrid-Skunk-Productions- Not all of the cars. I think only 11-12 of them. This channel has done videos about the derailment if you're interested.
@@johnkramer7161 Ah OK. Thanx for the reply. I will have to check it out.
They talk about in the commentary for the pilot
I used to work at a mall in Houston. A guy that worked at Radio Shack dove a K.I.T.T. car to work almost ever day in the early 2000’s. It was identical inside and out.
Awesome. What happened to him and his car?
@@marimisheru I’m not sure. The store went out of business and I never saw him our the car again. But it was surreal being generation x’er and it also been one of my favorite shows growing up in the 80s, seeing it a few times a week for about two years was crazy. The owner was a pretty cool guy too. He didn’t mind standing there talking about it.
@@Blumidnyt do you remember his name? Maybe you could try looking him up on social media.
Because of Knight Rider I bought third gen Trans Am. I love that thing!!! ❤️
Too bad about destroyed Trans Ams after the show. 😕
I still have KITT vs KARR recorded on vhs, the original air... with commercials lol!
Go back to 1982. Look how futuristic that Trans Am looks! Look how much it stands out above everything else on the road!
Great show I wish that thay had more cars today
I wrote a high school book report on the novelization of Trust Doesn't Rust.
KARR was always my favourite. I loved the yellow scanner and new sound... but not the terrible two-tone.
I never thought I would say "dammit, Pontiac" so many times in ten minutes, but here we are.
K.A.R.R. had 2 different voices and I recognized one of them and I always rooted for K.i.T.T. because he's the coolest car I've ever seen in My life and he's has the best lines in Knight Rider history
You are correct.look it up.
