One thing I noticed and have seen in lot of replicas/rebuilds, the crown of the original switch pod on the Scheffe dash (see the close ups in this video) was exactly level front to back from the voicebox to the gullwing so the crenellations lined up, and it seems the "other" KITTs used moulded parts which were fixed less accurately as it didn't matter - they were using the insert dash for close ups - and that meant the top of the switchpod sloped down to the top of the gullwing. The top of the gullwing didn't then line up like the original did. Seems a lot of the tour cars were like that too and subsequently some built replicas on that basis.

Just found your awesome Channel after watching your ep of Jay Leno's Garage. I'm 50 and was 12-16 when Knight Rider originally aired so have very fond memories of the series. Awestruck by the amount of detail you go into about the various cars (as a kid it didn't occur to me how many KITT's there might be! Astounding!). Being from Australia, in 1988 I visited Expo 88 in Brisbane and KITT was there, I was lucky enough to get to sit inside. KITT even spoke back! I'm guessing the answer to this question is here in the videos somewhere, but was the KITT that visited Australia in 1988 screen used or was it one of the replicas built later? Keep up the great work, would love to visit one of the original in the USA one of these days.

Yes I do remember K.I.T.T. showing up in Lubbock, Texas for car show in the 80's & the second time I've seen the car was when at Universal Studios when the car was on a trailer covered but could see part of the hub caps which saw this while on tour of the studio when went by the tram we were on. Interesting about the whereabouts of the Pontiac Trans Am aka K.I.T.T.
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial That by far would be the best piece of Knight rider history to buy if it's ever for say and restore it with the John Ward nose because that's the car that started it all
Buddy of mine in the 80s had a Firebird in dark blue metallic that had been in an accident. He and his dad ran a body shop and they fixed the car, put that awesome finish on it, and added a low air scoop offset to one side of the hood to make the car distinctive. It wasn't a Trans Am but it often got mistaken for one, and off course KITT was one of its nicknames. The Firebird of that era was really cool-looking, but of course it came with all the usual GM rattles and squeaks of its day. But that particular example had had a lot of love put into it.
There is a Night Rider Trans Am at a long Island air and space museum in garden City . Also this is Mitchel Field where The spirit Of St. Louis did fly out of ( movie plane is there as well ) .

That is incredible that the first K.I.T.T. Trans Am is still around and was used in 76 episodes!!! My first car was a black 1984 Firebird because I was such a huge fan as a 9 year old kid when the show first aired. I do have a question. Is Hollywood Productions still in business? What happen to the original molds? Did the business have other TV cars like the Fall Guy truck and A Team Van show in the video? Did they have any of those cars from their respective shows? Would love to hear any information or answers to these questions in a video. I was a fan of all the TV show cars of the day, like most kids from the 80’s!!! Thanks for the great content in this and all your videos👍👍👍👍👍
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial that's a pity. Do have trailers in the US their own license plates or that from the truck itself.... If yes hopefully its traceable.
Schweeeet! So glad you got an original. I remember paying 5 bucks to have a Poloroid shot with one of those tour cars. Thought it was a rip, but it gave me a chance to take a bunch of close ups with my disc camera lol. The scanner wasn't right and the season 3-4 dash was kinda cheesey because they just changed the two monitors to just one small monitor, but the rest of the car wasn't too bad. :)
I remember the show power of mathew star. there was an episode that featured a bunch of sports cars. I suspect from those pictures. they must have used the 3 cars for that episode.
I love that there is still so much love for this show. It's no Doctor Who, but it's still amazing. :) Well done on all of the work you've done, on this video and all of your other Knight Rider work.
Another good question is what happened to the unconverted blk/gld trans am used prob more so in the 4th season,it can be seen in behind the scenes from the 4th season and on the kitt hauler
In the video about the pilot episode, you comment that it was thought that the Nissan Z would be a candidate to make the series. It would be interesting to know (if it could be investigated) that other cars were candidates for the role (e.g. the Chevrolet Camaro) and why it was the Firebird that was chosen.
Really like the video and great info. On screen wise, isn't the first Trans-Am (pre K.I.T.T.) Michael Longs new 1982 one that he drive from the hotel to the dessert before being shot by Tania. And the blind drive seat looks a bit uncomfortable to lay in. Finally, glad that most scenes of Michael driving were filmed with the car being towed. As there is no way he could see anything with all the cameras mounted on the car.
Anyone else a die hard fan of this show and remember KITT’s voice box modulator being in the center where a tape deck would be?! It’s now about the steering wheel and that’s NOT where I remember it. Michael often even looks towards the lower area where a tape deck would be when speaking to KITT. It’s totally weird.
Love these videos. The history is fascinating. Thanks for sharing the behind the scenes photos. The ingenuity of the staff that designed and implemented features and components is amazing, they had to be creative within time and budget constraints. Seeing the internals of the right hand blind drive car conversion is really fascinating. And I’m amazed that this single car was in so many episodes. I’m equally amazed at just how many cars they used over the entire series. They lucked out too with those ‘82 PMD AR9 viscount seats that had the hole and no movable headrest. It provided a way to see out through the seat that I’m thinking would have been difficult to overcome with a different seat design. It was very effective especially when on standard def TV. So much is visible now only with the transfers to DVD and Blu-ray that was never intended to be seen. But today that makes it all the more enjoyable to figure out how they did it for us nerds that like to know all the details of the show’s production. 👍🏻
Great video Joe... Well I guess its true.. Burt Reynolds said he was promised a new Trans Am every year after Smokey and the Bandit but when he didn't get it one year he asked why and the new general manager told him that was the previous gms promise not mine... And I think Burt was a little upset lol
The car has still a very modern design, do you agree?
Very much so. Even today it stands out, without looking out of place.
In 82 it was the most aerodynamic car even beating out Ferrari

I am always in awe of how much information you have and detective work you guys do for Knight Rider and KITT. I am really hoping the original KITT has been restored and upgraded to serve proudly as a hero car in the much rumored new Knight Rider project. The old boy has sat around long enough!
KITT looks like he is smiling with his headlights up and scanner turned on...
Be here. There are 3 trans am with the keys in them waiting for you. Drive them away, they're yours. OMG...... It's my DREAM!!!
Very good job!! Keep these coming! Another fantastic job!!
It’s amazing it’s survived after all these years.
Love the content of all the videos you make. You are a true fan. How you know all this information is crazy. Some proper research gone into it all.
Glad you like them!
Great video man! Thx so much
_The Powers of Matthew Star_ airs Sunday mornings at 6 A.M. Eastern on MeTV
Nice again! I am curious about the next one! Already found the trailer from the truck you saved?
Not yet!
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial that's a pity. Do have trailers in the US their own license plates or that from the truck itself.... If yes hopefully its traceable.
Knight Rider historians are seriously legit & accurate about this... great job
Thanks Nikki!
I think I saw one of the promo KITTs for sale on market place today. I think it was a ‘vert too!
I remember the show power of mathew star. there was an episode that featured a bunch of sports cars. I suspect from those pictures. they must have used the 3 cars for that episode.
Laura Brannigan (self control) starts playing in the scene @ 14:39.
Nicely done Joe, a fascinating listen as always 👍👍
I love that there is still so much love for this show. It's no Doctor Who, but it's still amazing. :) Well done on all of the work you've done, on this video and all of your other Knight Rider work.
Hi , thanks for your amazing pasion and report! Do you know were i can buy a small miniature of the KITT? Thanks
Great video! Very informative. Thank you!
Another good question is what happened to the unconverted blk/gld trans am used prob more so in the 4th season,it can be seen in behind the scenes from the 4th season and on the kitt hauler
My toaster just spoke to me, so it must be a part of it.
Another great story! Can’t wait for the follow up ❤️
I see the car in Manchester England in arndale I think it was in the 90s .but it was so Night to see one off the care use
Very well done!!! Thank you. 😎👍🏾
As iconic as Airwolf, the Streethawk bike, and the A Team van. Every boy's dream.
Very well done. U did a great job and was well spoken.
Great video Joe... Well I guess its true.. Burt Reynolds said he was promised a new Trans Am every year after Smokey and the Bandit but when he didn't get it one year he asked why and the new general manager told him that was the previous gms promise not mine... And I think Burt was a little upset lol
