Oh, I just love it! A sweetheart as precious as Steph thinks that back in the day Rush fans were the "cool kids"! Ha! Actually, we were the Nerds, Geeks, and Musos (musicians and music fanatics), who loved (still do) Fantasy literature, science, Sci-Fi, Progressive Rock, Art Rock, New Wave/Punk, and other pursuits of higher learning/experience (see: Mary Jane)!! But we are so glad you loved what you heard from our favorite Prog Rock band!! Rush are a legitimate phenomenon. They started out in the late 60's, as friends in Middle School, who loved bands like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and the new Progressive Rock of the times, such as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson. They made their first album in 1974, with their old drummer, and it was a very heavy, hot Blues-Rock burner! But then they switched drummers, brought Neil Peart (they guy you saw in this video) and the rest is history!! They were really big in Progressive Rock/Metal in the 70's, very much a "Arena" Rock and sort of a Prog/New Wave/Rock/Pop band in the 1980's and leaned back into the heavier Prog in the 1990s and 2000's. They retired in 2015 and they were inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2013. Sadly, the world lost Neil Peart in 2020, to brain cancer. He was also the band's main lyricist, from 1975 onward. Check out his lyrics with each song you do (except for those from the 1st album, when he was not yet with the band)!! The next song you should do is "The Spirit of Radio"!!
I was lucky and somehow grew up in a very rock-centric suburb. At my Jr High in the very early 80's you pretty much had to choose sides, Led Zeppelin ruled or Rush ruled.
This was a great way to introduce yourself to RUSH, but don't stop here. Rush was together for over 40 years and their music catalogue is HUGE! I know that your next RUSH reaction to "YYZ", from their RUSH IN RIO concert will be amazing! ☮

Then the crowd's overwhelming enthusiasm might not be as much of a surprise to you as some other reactors, but the YYZ recording from RUSH IN RIO is absolutely EPIC and the HUGE crowd's participation is a big part of what makes that performance so special!
Based on younger reactors over the last 4-5 years, it would seem that Mr. Weinrib's voice was several decades ahead of it's time. Just like most everything about Rush, and just like we all claimed, way back in the day!
One of this bands most famous group of concerts was filmed in Brazil! It’s called RUSH in Rio and it’s crazy! Decades ago, but still excellent. Check out their song YYZ live in Rio! The crowd is great! You will understand what RUSH is. This is one of the all time biggest, best, Rock bands.
100% agree! Hearing the crowd singing along with YYZ ("It's zed, eh!") is truly an uplifting experience for me. I've been to many, many Rush shows and experienced it for myself, but never in a crowd the size of the Rio show.

Everybody was air-drumming and singing along at the North American shows, but the Rio crowd's enthusiasm was on another level altogether! And I have to second Winston's recommendation for Xanadu from Exit Stage Left as well. That performance is downright magical! The closing guitar solo still gives me goose-bumps every time I hear it, to this day.

Love Rush. Their 70's and early 80's stuff are absolutely phenomenal. Oh and a fan fact for you since you've said you're from Brazil: For some reason this song was used by Rede Globo as the opening of the show Macgyver back in the 90's
I missed their concert when living in São Paulo at that time. They played in front of a crowd of 60'000, their biggest audience of that tour. Just afterwards they played the Maracanã and recorded their highly praised Live in Rio CD. They were surprised by the spirit of the Brazilian fans who were singing the whole YYZ with them - their most famous instrumental! :D
You watch the video of just 3 musicians with Geddy Lee the lead vocalist over dubbing himself on vocals ...then bass guitar ...then keyboards. With Alex Lifeson on lead guitar and finally Neil [ The Professor ] Peart, one of the greatest drummers in the world, and sadly no longer with us. He passed away from a form of brain cancer on Jan 7th 2020. He is still sorely missed. Watching Rush live will leave you stunned, as to how they can recreate the sound of their studio albums with just the 3 of them. No playback overdubs as in the music video you just watched, which is the actual studio album version. This is one huge rabbit hole spanning 40 years of albums + live concerts captured on record & on film. If you ever see Neil Peart do a drum solo you will be mesmerized ! His drum kit alone in later concerts will stun you ! Their musicianship is on another level with unbelievable instrumentals timed to perfection, with sudden stops and starts. Their debut album simply named "Rush" in 1974 sounds like Led Zeppelin. They had not yet found their own sound we now all instantly recognize as "Rush" ! Enjoy this journey of discovery .... Wait till you get to the album "2112" ..known as "Twentyone Twelve" and the title track, over 20 minutes long. [ What an intro ! ] ...and then there is "Xanadu" from the album "A Farewell To Kings" which is as incredible to watch live from " Exit Stage Left, live in concert " as it is on the studio album. This would be my next song to do if I were to recommend....and "live" ! They totally recreate the studio version....yep ...with just the 3 of them. Play this and you will be forever trapped in the Rush Universe, just like Kubla Khan, trapped in the caves of ice ...in Xanadu ! No turning back after hearing and watching that track. The Spirit of Radio, Working man, Closer to the Heart, Time Stand Still, Limelight, Ghost of a Chance, Fly by Night, Subdivisions. Those are probably their best.
Imo Time Stands Still doesn't belong in that list, it doesn't stand out like the others, and I just listened to Ghost of a Chance for the first time, not a bad song, I'll need to listen to it a few more times, but it's at least a 3 star song, possibly 4, maybe even 5, we'll see
I used to have favorite RUSH songs, By-Tor and the Snow Dog was my first, but now I can't even pick a favorite, they're all so great in their own right! Huge fan since 1976, I saw them live something like 17 times from the Farewell To Kings tour to R40. Best live band ever!

Tom Sawyer was originally a book written over a 150 years ago by the famous author Mark Twain. The title character Tom was a scamp and a rascal of a young boy. Something of a Bart Simpson of his time. And this song is seeking to capture that rebellious energy for the listener. Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to your next reaction!
This is the tail end of real classic rock. Early 80s. I think i saw this concert in hollywood, fl. Rush was a great band. 2112 is their best album but Permanent Waves was peak rush. Late 70s. The song "spirit of Radio" is probably the next song you should check out. From permanent waves. I am sure others have recommended it. Good luck. God bless.
Steph, I was in a RUSH tribute band in college in the late 80's. We had a dedicated following of 400 fans that followed us from gig to gig to gig. Back then, clubs made their money from food and drinks as well as the cover at the door. Our fans were always hungry and thirsty, which is why every club in the state wanted to book us for gigs.
RUSH was an awesome band, as they combined hard rock and prog into their own unique sound. The album this comes from is arguably their best. Also from Moving Pictures do Limelight, another big hit for them and a banger. You have much to hear from this great band, enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥
I started listening to Rush in 74. I love them til 82. Then they changed style and I didn't like much. But 74 to 82 for me as good as any stretch of music a band has done
June 8, 1974, Port Credit Secondary School in Mississauga Ontario. Turns out my memory is faulty, I was not there yet, I was still in Senior Public School (grade 7) at Queen Elizabeth School, also Port Credit. I know that I DID see them back in the mid 70s somewhere, darned if I can figure out where it was! Maybe I went to the High School to see that show?

Note that, in addition to being a skilled performer and innovator on the drums and a creative composer, the drummer - Neil Peart - was also Rush's chief lyricist and philosopher. He sadly passed away from glioblastoma in January 2020, but his fans (myself included) have not gotten over his passing. He was an intellectual humanist as well as a musician.

I agree with the multitude of comments recommending YYZ from RUSH IN RIO, guaranteed to blow your mind! Their fanbase in Brazil was huge, surprising even them, and Sao Paulo was the largest audience they ever played to at 60,000 followed by 40,000 at the Rio show. Hello, Rush fan since 1981 here. And I guess a literary person too? I found your pronunciation of Tom Sawyer adorable. And you showed an openness to learn how to properly say the words. Props to you. Meaning, good for you. Do more Rush please. The are three of my favorite people. They are/were (Neil Peart drummer, percussionist and lyricist. 1952-2020), three masters at their respective craft. Admired by musicians from many genres of music.
Another great Rush song is BU2B live time machine tour. Their live concert videos are all amazing. But the oldest videos are not very good quality, but the performances are great.
There's no way for a first-time listener to have any idea what to expect. "OK, '80's rock song, 83 million views, think Van Halen, Metallica, Def Leppard?" Nope! They were unique, like no other band, and that's what makes watching a first-timer's reaction so enjoyable!.

Grew up on Rush. Amazing band with a ton of great music. Neil Peart is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. There are a few videos of him doing solos and they're all really good.

One thing about a 3-piece. Especially live. If someone's off, that's obvious. There aren't a number of other bandmates who can cover for you. Rush are effing tight. What you hear in studio, which is impressive on it's own, is what you hear live, and sometimes even more. People often comment about how tight vocal harmonies are, among siblings. Rush are like that. They are as musically tight as though they were close siblings. And their behavior towards each other bears that out! 😄
Hello Steph As lifelong fan of Rush, welcome to Rush's Universe! This video was recorded at LeStudio in Canada in which Rush plus other bands or groups recorded new album there. The studio is not there anymore. Back to Rush, members are Geddy Lee, vocals plus Bass & Keyboards, Alex Lifeson, guitarist and backup vocals (he foot pedals for guitars or bass to assist Geddy Lee on certain songs), and late great Neil Peart, drummer and percussionist aka "Professor" who sadly passed away in 2020 of Brain Cancer. Rush started in mainly mid 70's with another drummer named John Rutsey. But John left the band. Neil Peart joined Rush in 1975. Rush was big in their home country of Canada and other countries, but they had a hard time to break thru US Market. Then local rock station in Cleveland, Ohio with a Call Letters, WMMS 100.7 "The Buzzard" helped Rush break thru US Market. It was rumored that a DJ needed to go on a bathroom break, but DJ needed a long song cover his or her time in restroom without any issues of dead air live. One of Rush's long songs was played, I think it was 2112. Fans of Rush called Neil as Professor is that he is main songwriter of Rush's songs. Like others stated here, Rush's live concerts are legendary. Rush officially ended touring in 2015 with final tour called R40. My friends and I were fortunate enough to Rush live in concert when they were doing their Time Machine tour in West Palm Beach, Fl. in Oct of 2010. Continue on in the rabbit hole of Rush. You will enjoy it I know I did as a lifelong fan since I was in my teens.
Actually the song played on WMMS was Working Man. At over 7 minutes long it was over twice that of most pop music. The song really resonated with Cleveland's working class audience and the DJ, Donna Halper, has said the phone was ringing off the hook asking about the new Led Zeppelin song they thought they were hearing the first time it was played on-air. And she didn't need to go to the restroom at that time but as music director she was always looking for long songs that were good "bathroom songs" for when a DJ did need to go. She had been sent a Canadian import copy and knew on first listen to that it was the perfect song for Cleveland, and the buzz from her audience led to a US record deal. That was in 1974 and she is credited with special thanks in the liner notes on the US release of the debut album. Ironically, that record deal was in jeopardy after the disappointing audience response to their third album Caress Of Steel containing two songs over 12 minutes, one of them almost 20, and the execs were demanding shorter, more mainstream music ("be more like Bad Company") from their next album or they would be dropped. RUSH's response was 2112 in 1976 with another 20+ minute full album-side title track on one side and stuff more like what the record company was demanding on the other. After the success of that album the record company execs finally wised up and backed off but the band didn't want to risk going through that again so they formed their own label Anthem Records and followed up with A Farewell To Kings containing two more 10+ minute songs including Cygnus X-1, an epic series continued on the entire first side of their next album Hemispheres. I still vividly remember listening to the cliff-hanger ending of FTK/Cygnus the first time and seeing "To Be Continued" on the lyric sheet in the liner notes, and anxiously awaiting the next album for an entire year to hear the rest of the story.

Progressive Rock is really more of a left-brain thing, so fans were mostly guys (few gals) and were the nerdy type. I didn't realize it at the time because I didn't know much about music, but the changing time signatures that Rush uses is one of the things that really drew me into the music even if I didn't fully understand what was going on. That synth lick that Geddy plays: 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2...and Alex plays his solo part over that timing while Neil rocks the drums. Three top-tier musicians making such a full sound.

I recommend the studio and live versions to gain a whole new level of appreciation for how good they were live. You watch the video of just 3 musicians with Geddy Lee the lead vocalist over dubbing himself on vocals ...then bass guitar ...then keyboards. With Alex Lifeson on lead guitar and finally Neil [ The Professor ] Peart, one of the greatest drummers in the world, and sadly no longer with us. He passed away from a form of brain cancer on Jan 7th 2020. He is still sorely missed. Watching Rush live will leave you stunned, as to how they can recreate the sound of their studio albums with just the 3 of them. No playback overdubs as in the music video you just watched, which is the actual studio album version. This is one huge rabbit hole spanning 40 years of albums + live concerts captured on record & on film. If you ever see Neil Peart do a drum solo you will be mesmerized ! His drum kit alone in later concerts will stun you ! Their musicianship is on another level with unbelievable instrumentals timed to perfection, with sudden stops and starts. Their debut album simply named "Rush" in 1974 sounds like Led Zeppelin. They had not yet found their own sound we now all instantly recognize as "Rush" ! Enjoy this journey of discovery .... Wait till you get to the album "2112" ..known as "Twentyone Twelve" and the title track, over 20 minutes long. [ What an intro ! ] ...and then there is "Xanadu" from the album "A Farewell To Kings" which is as incredible to watch live from " Exit Stage Left, live in concert " as it is on the studio album. This would be my next song to do if I were to recommend....and "live" ! They totally recreate the studio version....yep ...with just the 3 of them. Play this and you will be forever trapped in the Rush Universe, just like Kubla Khan, trapped in the caves of ice ...in Xanadu ! No turning back after hearing and watching that track. I've been a fan since 1974 and have seen them 4 times. they were fantastic. definitely one of my all time favorite bands.
The Spirit of Radio, Working man, Closer to the Heart, Time Stand Still, Limelight, Ghost of a Chance, Fly by Night, Subdivisions. Those are probably their best.
2112, Xanadu, Necromancer, Twilight Zone, Tears and Vital Signs are also great songs
Imo Time Stands Still doesn't belong in that list, it doesn't stand out like the others, and I just listened to Ghost of a Chance for the first time, not a bad song, I'll need to listen to it a few more times, but it's at least a 3 star song, possibly 4, maybe even 5, we'll see
I used to have favorite RUSH songs, By-Tor and the Snow Dog was my first, but now I can't even pick a favorite, they're all so great in their own right! Huge fan since 1976, I saw them live something like 17 times from the Farewell To Kings tour to R40. Best live band ever!

Tom Sawyer was originally a book written over a 150 years ago by the famous author Mark Twain. The title character Tom was a scamp and a rascal of a young boy. Something of a Bart Simpson of his time. And this song is seeking to capture that rebellious energy for the listener. Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to your next reaction!

This is the tail end of real classic rock. Early 80s. I think i saw this concert in hollywood, fl. Rush was a great band. 2112 is their best album but Permanent Waves was peak rush. Late 70s. The song "spirit of Radio" is probably the next song you should check out. From permanent waves. I am sure others have recommended it. Good luck. God bless.
Steph, I was in a RUSH tribute band in college in the late 80's. We had a dedicated following of 400 fans that followed us from gig to gig to gig. Back then, clubs made their money from food and drinks as well as the cover at the door. Our fans were always hungry and thirsty, which is why every club in the state wanted to book us for gigs.
RUSH was an awesome band, as they combined hard rock and prog into their own unique sound. The album this comes from is arguably their best. Also from Moving Pictures do Limelight, another big hit for them and a banger. You have much to hear from this great band, enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥

I started listening to Rush in 74. I love them til 82. Then they changed style and I didn't like much. But 74 to 82 for me as good as any stretch of music a band has done

June 8, 1974, Port Credit Secondary School in Mississauga Ontario. Turns out my memory is faulty, I was not there yet, I was still in Senior Public School (grade 7) at Queen Elizabeth School, also Port Credit. I know that I DID see them back in the mid 70s somewhere, darned if I can figure out where it was! Maybe I went to the High School to see that show?

Note that, in addition to being a skilled performer and innovator on the drums and a creative composer, the drummer - Neil Peart - was also Rush's chief lyricist and philosopher. He sadly passed away from glioblastoma in January 2020, but his fans (myself included) have not gotten over his passing. He was an intellectual humanist as well as a musician.

They released a DVD of their concert in Rio de Janeiro on November 23 2002. They released the double DVD the next year. You should check it out.

Do more Rush please. The are three of my favorite people. They are/were (Neil Peart drummer, percussionist and lyricist. 1952-2020), three masters at their respective craft. Admired by musicians from many genres of music.

This band was probably the most apreciated among other musicians, as they all where masters of their instruments and of course Geddy Lee, the singer and basist also the player of keyboards aka multitasking. Sorry if I expressed my love to a women that have a bit same heritage as I have, from mediterrian region. I live in Finland, but when ever I go in southern Europe and mediterrian countries like Spain or Italy, I feel like home. Blood is thicker than anything else in life. My grand father was from Italy so there is that explanation:)

The drummer, Neil Pert passed away a couple of years ago. If I am not mistaken he also wrote most of their songs.

Grew up on Rush. Amazing band with a ton of great music. Neil Peart is widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. There are a few videos of him doing solos and they're all really good.

One thing about a 3-piece. Especially live. If someone's off, that's obvious. There aren't a number of other bandmates who can cover for you. Rush are effing tight.
What you hear in studio, which is impressive on it's own, is what you hear live, and sometimes even more.
People often comment about how tight vocal harmonies are, among siblings. Rush are like that. They are as musically tight as though they were close siblings.
And their behavior towards each other bears that out! 😄

As lifelong fan of Rush, welcome to Rush's Universe! This video was recorded at LeStudio in Canada in which Rush plus other bands or groups recorded new album there. The studio is not there anymore. Back to Rush, members are Geddy Lee, vocals plus Bass & Keyboards, Alex Lifeson, guitarist and backup vocals (he foot pedals for guitars or bass to assist Geddy Lee on certain songs), and late great Neil Peart, drummer and percussionist aka "Professor" who sadly passed away in 2020 of Brain Cancer. Rush started in mainly mid 70's with another drummer named John Rutsey. But John left the band. Neil Peart joined Rush in 1975. Rush was big in their home country of Canada and other countries, but they had a hard time to break thru US Market. Then local rock station in Cleveland, Ohio with a Call Letters, WMMS 100.7 "The Buzzard" helped Rush break thru US Market. It was rumored that a DJ needed to go on a bathroom break, but DJ needed a long song cover his or her time in restroom without any issues of dead air live. One of Rush's long songs was played, I think it was 2112. Fans of Rush called Neil as Professor is that he is main songwriter of Rush's songs. Like others stated here, Rush's live concerts are legendary. Rush officially ended touring in 2015 with final tour called R40.
My friends and I were fortunate enough to Rush live in concert when they were doing their Time Machine tour in West Palm Beach, Fl. in Oct of 2010.

Actually the song played on WMMS was Working Man. At over 7 minutes long it was over twice that of most pop music. The song really resonated with Cleveland's working class audience and the DJ, Donna Halper, has said the phone was ringing off the hook asking about the new Led Zeppelin song they thought they were hearing the first time it was played on-air. And she didn't need to go to the restroom at that time but as music director she was always looking for long songs that were good "bathroom songs" for when a DJ did need to go. She had been sent a Canadian import copy and knew on first listen to that it was the perfect song for Cleveland, and the buzz from her audience led to a US record deal. That was in 1974 and she is credited with special thanks in the liner notes on the US release of the debut album.
Ironically, that record deal was in jeopardy after the disappointing audience response to their third album Caress Of Steel containing two songs over 12 minutes, one of them almost 20, and the execs were demanding shorter, more mainstream music ("be more like Bad Company") from their next album or they would be dropped. RUSH's response was 2112 in 1976 with another 20+ minute full album-side title track on one side and stuff more like what the record company was demanding on the other. After the success of that album the record company execs finally wised up and backed off but the band didn't want to risk going through that again so they formed their own label Anthem Records and followed up with A Farewell To Kings containing two more 10+ minute songs including Cygnus X-1, an epic series continued on the entire first side of their next album Hemispheres. I still vividly remember listening to the cliff-hanger ending of FTK/Cygnus the first time and seeing "To Be Continued" on the lyric sheet in the liner notes, and anxiously awaiting the next album for an entire year to hear the rest of the story.

Progressive Rock is really more of a left-brain thing, so fans were mostly guys (few gals) and were the nerdy type. I didn't realize it at the time because I didn't know much about music, but the changing time signatures that Rush uses is one of the things that really drew me into the music even if I didn't fully understand what was going on. That synth lick that Geddy plays: 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2...and Alex plays his solo part over that timing while Neil rocks the drums. Three top-tier musicians making such a full sound.
