I heard this song on the radio, had no idea who Rush was (I was pretty young), but it was instant love. I had to keep listening to the radio to catch the artist and name of the album (there was no internet in the early 80s!). I immediately went our and bought the Cassette! I later upgraded to the CD, which I STILL have (long since ripped into MP3s on all my devices.

You realize Neil paraphrased that from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus? He took lines from John Donne, Ernest Hemingway and others to use in Rush’s lyrics. I agree he was a great lyricist but Neil loved to read and I don’t think a lot of people know he lifted lines from others to use in their songs.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

I love that you are re-visting Rush, this is a DEEP rabbit hole! One of the most amazing things about Rush is the way they move between time signatures; you may not even have noticed for example the bridge section into the guitar solo changed to 7/8, so effortlessly and without the listener being jolted or having to re-sync their foot tapping on the down beat... ;-)

That "sound" you heard the drummer make was on an open high hat (closed quickly) with a simultaneous kick bass drum (which coincides with the open high hat note). For those who've not tried Neil Peart's high hat/bass drum technique, it looks like it should be simple, but it's devilishly hard for all but the best drummers (I'm not great, so it's a struggle), and it was one of his numerous innovations in the way he composed and performed accents for the music.

Neil is my favourite percussionist, the bass from Geddy is incredible, it’s very difficult to hear a bass play this strong in many songs, Rush’s songs bring out every instrument involved so you hear it. Alexis guitar takes you on a journey. 3 man band sounds like a 5 man band, so talented and loved everywhere they go. Such great people who love what they do and the fans that love it as well.

I first saw Rush on the 2112 tour, having already bought 'Rush', 'Fly by Night', and 'Caress of Steel'... and have been an avid (or rabid) fan ever since. I watch a lot of 'reaction' videos and you are one of my first stops. My three favorite bands of all time are AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and RUSH !!!! I absolutely adore your reactions to the really exquisite music that I was raised on throughout the 70s and 80s. When you listen, and we see that beautiful authentic smile.... it warms my heart, knowing that there are generations that will keep this 'old rock and roll' music alive for centuries, not unlike Beethoven and Mozart... Every period, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, is a reflection of the music they were listening to. The music that inspired them influenced the music they created. By this point, it was The Police, Ultravox, Talking Heads, etc. "All this machinery making modern music ..."

I don't remember what I said in my comment on your "Limelight" reaction from maybe a year ago (!), but I do think I remember using the word "effortless." There is an apparent ease in his transitions and this gorgeous sonority in his midrange. Another thing, which I never see or hear mentioned by anyone, is the effortlessness (that word again) in his vibrato during this period - and the fact that he always seemed to be able to use it in just the right places (""His reserve a quiet defense," "The river," "What you say about society," etc.) There is a prime example of that instinct and ability on "Vital Signs." When he sings the phrase, "Can only be worn by persistence," he kind of accents the word "persistence" with this beautiful trilly vibrato, which adds so much - to the extent that, when I heard the song live and he sang the phrase without that vibrato, I was disappointed, because I felt that it was so integral to that vocal performance.
Also, he is the frigging Prime Minister of diphthongs, but that's another topic altogether.
These are things most people probably don't think about, even Rush fans. But I do, because, though I'm not a "singa" (as Owl Jolson might say), I do so love vocals and vocalists.
Glad to have heard an analysis of this track from you. I felt this was Geddy's voice at its best. It still had range and flexibility, but by this point, it also had a richness and maturity which came with age and experience. A legitimately great vocalist who was somehow never recognized as such by the masses.
Oh - and that "tiny shift" into verse two was a hihat "bark" - Neil Peart doing his best Bernard Purdie.
    Anyway, thanks again!

Sounds effortless, but is anything but. Probably the least appreciated thing about them. Many of their peers in the biz have commented over the years that they're probably the hardest working band in rock music. We all like to sit back and enjoy and profess their talent, but Neil even commented on this saying; "I wasn't talented, but I was relentless". ..modesty for sure, but their effort of perfecting their craft can't be understated.

Brilliant lyrics, precise and powerful musicianship, an incredible mix and wonderfully structured. Yes, Geddy, as well as the rest of the band, made the practically impossible seem effortless. Geddy somehow managed to pull off the vocal intonations, range, and phrasing while playing the most compelling and complex bass lines and movements. Surprisingly I can’t stop playing Rush when I drive. I tried putting on other music, but I’m finding most other music boring now. I keep going back to Rush and never get tired of it. The music is so complex and multi-layered, you can focus on different parts each time you listen. There is so much there and I just don’t get tired of it. Neil’s drumming is so incredible.
