- Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest in the middle of a Denmark's European Championship Match against Finland, seemingly out of nowhere. Fortunately, medical staff swiftly delivered chest compressions and saved his life. Christian is now recovering and "the same old Christian" according to his teammates.

“If your patient’s ribs aren’t broken, you didn’t do CPR right”
That’s not true, you can do CPR just fine without breaking ribs, it is NOT a requirement for doing CPR right, it’s true that it’s easy to break them when doing proper CPR, but if you break too many you’re probably doing it too hard. You would rather be alive with a few broken ribs than dead because they didn’t push hard enough though.

Sharing a short story : I'm a prior lifeguard and current EMT. One time, at band camp, an officer got to the scene of a lifeless patient before us. When we arrived on scene he was performing quality chest compressions. Not CPR, Chest Compressions. We took over, activated full CPR, got him to the ER, where it took some more work but we got him back. I guarantee the officer's actions and skillfull chest compressions were instrumental in raising the patient's chances of survivability. Might very well be the main reason we were able to revive him.

Q: But what if I'm not sure if their heart has stopped?
A: Chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions! Many authorities these days recommend chest compressions as first aid for someone who isn't breathing, even if you can't definitively confirm a lack of pulse. Chest compressions have the added benefit of recirculating air in the lungs. So if someone isn't breathing and you're not certain if they have a pulse, many authorities recommend uninterrupted chest compressions, rather than intermittently stopping to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Q: But isn't it true that cardiac arrest is irreversible, even in hospitals?
A: Chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions! While it's true that a total lack of heart activity often results in loss of life, a lack of a pulse does not definitively indicate a lack of heart activity. They're two different things. The heart is a complex bundle of specialized muscles characterized by an organized, rhythmic storm of electrical activity. When the muscles are viable and the electrical activity is properly coordinated, there is rhythmic blood flow. There is a pulse. If the activity is still there but it's not coordinated properly, there might not be a pulse. If there's no activity at all, there's no pulse. So you see, the absence of a pulse doesn't tell you if it's because the heart isn't doing anything at all, or if the heart's electrical activity isn't coordinated. I don't know if anyone reading this might know what a stepper motor is, but it's like a stepper motor. You've got to send the right signals to the right terminals in the right order, or it won't spin. If it's not spinning, you don't know if that means the battery is dead or if the choreography is wrong.
Back to the heart. There are also other causes for diminished pulse with cardiac electrical activity, such as pneumothorax, internal bleeding putting pressure on the heart, or interrupted blood flow just to the part of the body you happen to be checking for a pulse. These are underlying causes that can be treated in a hospital setting, but only if the patient is still viable when they get there, so you have to keep those chest compressions going to buy them some time. Plus, while it's a long shot, sometimes people do survive an unexpected cessation of electrical activity in the heart. But if they've got no blood flow, no pulse, for fifteen minutes while waiting for the ambulance, then you may never know if they had a chance or not, because in that amount of time, a brain starved of oxygen can easily result in death.
Chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions!

In Denmark all of us with a driver's license knows how to do CPR. It's the law. We are taught to first secure airways, check pulse, if no pulse chest compressions. Simon Kjær knew what he was doing when he was securing the airway before the medics came on the field
It's the same here in Bulgaria. I saved my boyfriend's life with chest compressions years ago. I had no clue what I was doing, but we both made it through. You really do use it.
I remember This happening. It was such a sureal experience. I usually don’t watch football(soccer), and honestly I wasn’t that day either. I did watch the news shortly after it had happened on the day though. (At the time no one knew of he would make it. Only that he had been transfered to the hospital) I remember feeling slightly detached like I was watching a movie, and still extremely moved because it was real. What I remember most though is the praise and overwhelming support from the fans, both towards the medical team, the players, Eriksens family and Eriksen himself. Everyone on that team reacted swiftly and with complete focus on Eriksen. From calling the medical team, to shielding him from prying eyes, (and shielding the fans from the scene) and conforting his partner who truely thought she was loosing him. Hearing Eriksen was alive and in recovery was somehow one of the biggest relieves I had felt in a long While. Eriksen was treated as a king and the team was rightfully treated as heroes. I don’t know how other teams would have reacted and I truely hope we will never have to find out. But I will forever be proud of our team for reacting the way they did, and thankfull that it ended the way it did. (And pissed that UEFA “made” the teams finish the match though one of the teams was missing a teammember and no one knew if he would survive. They should have called it a tie out of respect. No one was techically forced to play mind you, either of the teams could have forfeited, but UEFA should have stepped up and made the call out of respect for the fans, teams and Eriksen)
Oh god I remember this, I had just come back from a walk and it was on the TV. My mum was already at home with my brother and they were scrolling past when my dad pointed it out. We watched for ages until we knew he was OK. I don't even watch football but I was on my phone searching anything about it and I was checking my phone for days after to make sure he was alright.
Same i was at a check up for after my surgery and me and my dad went in his car, and turned on the radio and we heard what happend, i didnt understand at first, and then he told me. 5 mind forward and my Class groupchat is freaking out and thats when i fully understand.
Im from Denmark so this was a greater schock for me than people outside Denmark.
I was at a restaurant and this was on a tv while it was happening , the whole restaurant was watching and gasped so loudly when it happened, I’m glad they saved him !
This actually looks like Commotio Cordis. It’s when a sudden blow to the chest (heart) causes a disruption to the heart during the T wave. See how he fell right after the ball hit his chest? Adding on that his heart restarted after shocking makes it even more likely he suffered from a Commotio Cordis.
The real question is: why is this happening so much? I dont ever remember this kind of thing happening this frequent prepandemic. Or actually ever. Yet, athletes are dropping regularly. Hmm. Time to connect the dots.
They should require CPR training in order to graduate from high school. Learning how to do this properly and how to use an AED properly could easily save a life. This guy actually got together with a heart foundation I forget the name of it but they are trying to make sure AEDs are more readily available and people know how to use them bc this saved his life. I did a presentation on heart arrhythmia in college and talked about this.
My state requires us to become certified in CPR before we graduate! Hopefully, I never have to use it, but it’s a super important skill to have!
@@5occergirl45That's fantastic. What state is that?
@@rafinyx1142 North Carolina, but I’ve heard from out of state friends that their school/state required it too
In my 9th grade health class we had to learn how to do cpr
We did t but I didn't go cuz I already did a 60 hrs course for a emr
Always take the time to learn cpr
I did so before I had children and it saved our 1yr old firstborns life, shes turning 18 this year
God bless her
Wow.. I'm glad everyone's okay!!!
CPR for babies is not part of the usual courses right?
@@athmaid Not usually but I had certificate for senior first aid, part of it was cpr on babies and children along with adults
Good reminder, i was meaning to register for a newborn first aid. I’m obligated to refresh adult’s every three years anyway.
As a danish person, the next Day in school everyone was talking about it. He is okay now but he was of the field for quite some time.
Saw this live, was amazing to see him get away OK and even play again a few months later😊
Cheers to the football medics for saving Erickson’s life.
Shout out to his teammates for shielding him and the medics from any interruptions.
I was watching the game on TV. Absolutely terrifying, I seriously thought he was dead. Kudos to team captain Simon Kjær, who ran across the pitch in seconds to check that he hadn't swallowed his tongue and then put him in the recovery position.
It also made me realize that I haven't practiced CPR since I was 15, so it's time for a refresher. Might actually suggest to my boss that we get some training at work.
What job do you have?
Like, CPR is useful no matter what
Same for me. I was 100% sure he was gone and I am so glad that he made it. And it was definitely a reminder that I need to refresh my knowledge in CPR etc.. The last time I had a class on that was when I got my driver's licence 15 years ago. If only a few percent of the millions of viewers, who witnessed this unfortunate incident live, decide to learn about CPR, then at least Eriksen's breakdown has some sort of positive outcome.
@@ilikefood1662 I've worked at 3 different cemeteries and at the first one I worked at, we got both the half-day standard first aid class focused CPR and AED and later the full day extended course including dealing with injuries and psychological first aid. Because visitors are often old people AND we need to be able to help if a colleague gets injured.
The full one was held after a colleague had a stroke in the break room and while we didn't have to perform CPR, we still knew exactly what to do and ask him, because he was actually fully conscious. So yeah... We technically gave each other a kind psychological first AID after he was picked up by an ambulance. The boss told us to sit and talk about it and if anyone was too shaken up about it, he would send them home with full pay.
I maintain and run a small cemetery myself now and I'm going to ask for a new first aid class and fire safety for me and my assistant (+ maybe the priest, verger and organist, if they want to) in the winter. It's such an important skill to have no matter what you work with.
You can't swallow your tongue.
I thought you weren't clinically dead until your brain stopped living.
You thought wrong buckaroo
Thanks you your advice last year I saved my great grandfather from dying thank you ❤
Stay strong Eriksen
0:10 His eyes are open and his body is lifeless. This still looks terrifying. Hope this never happens again to him.
Rip to everyone that had this happen when no one was around...
Miss you guys ruiz and batton.
We just witnessed that chest compression saves lives.
Finally! Real example of CHEST COMPRESSIONS, awesome video Dr Mike!
I saw this story, good ending
Bondi Rescue also has a real example of chest compressions, and AED....and what agonal breathing looks like
I saw that game live actually, felt so bad for the guy as he is one of the best footballers in Europe
I’ve learned this. My dad died of heart attack. I kept thinking if only anyone there knew CPR, it might be different.
I WAS TELLING MY DAD WHY THE FIRST DID CPR, BECAUSE OF YOU!
I love how “small” the world are! ❤️
Eriksen is alive and stabel, and we here in Denmark is happy for that ❤️🇩🇰
Important to mention Kjaer (the danish captain) made sure Eriksen didn’t swallow his tongue
And calling it soccer hurts lol
@@LYNN-id9rb You're wrong both ways. Dr Mike is born in Russia, with russian gens. He is a russian imigrant to US and his native language isn't variation of english know as american english. We also call football... well football, because 99% of the contact with the ball, is made with the feet. Game where over 90% of the contact with the ball is made by hands/upper body shouldn't be called football, as there is legitimate sport that fulfilles the criteria to carry that name. Get salty all you want*, but facts don't care about your feelings and neither do I.
P. S. talking about not respecting cultures, it is disrespectful to steal the name of a legitimate sport and then try to force a name change on the sport that the name was stolen from. That is not how law works. You protect the victim, not the abuser.
@@LYNN-id9rb respect English culture by calling the sport by its freaking name
Haha I think the reason we Americans call football what we do, (🏈) is because the shape of a ball resembles a foot. (I know it’s a stretch…) plus the punt through the field goal.
@@acoutre yeah but they are still wrong. It's called fotball 🤪
@@Kricke87 exactly
Isn’t it wild the number of young athletes whose hearts are suddenly stopping? It’s almost like something happened three or four years ago that dramatically increased the incidence of heart stoppage. 🤔🤨🧐
Yeah, covid can cause heart problems. Good thing we have vaccines that reduces that risk.
This case was caused by cardiacmyopathy, or enlargement of the heart muscle.
This condition can go unnoticed for years, if there are no incidents, but often reveals itself during strenuous exersize where the heart is under strain.
This had nothing to do with blood lots or vaccines like you're implying. He had an enlarged left ventricle, which failed to contract due to muscle fatigue while he was performing strenuous exersize.

I remember watching this on live tv at first I was confused and thought that i will never figure it out but when I saw this video now I knew
Oh my gosh if my friend or someone I knew dropped dead like that I would have a panic attack that's so scary
My dad watched this live and came in to my mum and I in tears, apparently very distressing to see. Glad he’s recovering!
i saw it live aswell
Seeing it live was really terrifying. I went to my toilet to cry. My father and brother could not believe what they just saw. They were even more worried cause he was one of my favourite players. Really glad that he's back and scoring goals after goals. 💪
I was on the stadion when it happend
Best part about the whole thing is the players standing back to him for his privacy and then Kasper Schmeichel (The goalkeeper) comforting his wife
That is terrifying to watch! Praise God he’s ok. I got my first aid training and at the time learned compressions and breaths, but my firefighter husband told me that was less effective and to just do compressions. Thank you for this life saving post!
The way his eyes are still open that’s literally scares the freak outta me 😧
I work in the hospital and every single dead person I see had their eyes open.
@@JudahMaccabee_ oh that explains the 50 bodies in my basement
Praise also for the Denmark players covering Christian Eriksen during this emergency
And finnish fans gave them finland's flag to cover him from tv cameras

He now has a thing in his heart that does he doesn’t get heart attacks/cardiac arrest as often anymore
This made my heart pound cuz my dad died to this at a local match and it still gets me anxiety when I hear stuff like this
No lie, this is the best form of content I've seen from this channel. Feels more like a doctor with a RUclips channel, and much less like a RUclipsr who has an MD
I like how the players stood in a circle covering up the medics
30:2 120 bpm the priority’s are CAB circulation which is chest compressions airway wich is opening the airway with for-head chin or jaw thrust in trauma and breathing wich is using an ambo with O2 to stimulate breathing

There is songs for cpr that keep you on the right beat per minute
My favorite is another one bites the dust
Will you do a follow up on why did it happen? I mean, he's a top athlete and passed all the medical checks.
I guess for the same reason a non-smoker can get lung cancer.
You know hes not his doctor right? It could be anything from running around to genetics
@@mentalsmith6862 I didn't say it was impossible, just highly unlikely. Just wanted to hear Dr Mike's take on it, why it could've happened and was there any way to prevent or predict it.
nothing has been leaked yet about it, but most people think it might have been a blodclod in the heart. Its the most common reason for cardiac arrest and can in some cases not be detected witrh symptoms, though most of the time there are symptoms prior to the actual heart failure. My country is waiting impatiently
No one knows what happened yet, they held a press conference on Sunday saying he was to be kept at hospital to do more teste
