    12 ohm woofer and a 12 ohm midrange that looks more like a full range speaker, paired with a 6 ohm tweeter. That is a strange combination of drivers.

  • @di5502
    @di5502 6 лет назад +49

    Yep - misalignment of drivers will cause phasing issues. Depending on how many degrees out of phase the LF driver is with the mid driver, the comb filtering at and around the crossover frequency could definitely be described as sort of a cheap reverb-like sound.
    In a live sound system, 5” might not make a huge difference (although in theory and good practice it should be compensated for), it will be more apparent in a near-field listening environment. You are hearing much more audio direct from the drivers, which are out of alignment. The waves don’t get the time to propagate and bounce around the room before your ear notices something is fucked up.

    • @GarretClaridgeMeerkat
      @GarretClaridgeMeerkat  6 лет назад +11

      I was tempted to say comb filtering but Im not sure most people even know about that, I notice that effect mostly when people have multiple speaker cabinets piled up wrong, For some reason current PA cab manuals do not show that you have to pair up tweeters close, I have to run speaker delays at all kinds of events for live sound and work out the time alignment by measurement, especially between subwoofers that might be at the dance floor closer to the audience

    • @gavincurtis
      @gavincurtis 6 лет назад +2

      Get some line arrays Garret, makes many of the problems go away.... especially that sweet spot. Everybody gets a sweet spot :)

    • @TehMG
      @TehMG 6 лет назад +6

      Also the woofer is playing full-range (no inductor in the crossover to low-pass filter the woofer) which certainly doesn't help things either.
      That's probably the reason for the 12 ohm woofer and mid range, because both the woofer and mid-range are playing the mids, so their effective impedance at everything except the lows is going to be 6 ohms. Similarly, the mid-range driver is also playing the highs.
      Shit cost-cutting design really.

    • @di5502
      @di5502 6 лет назад +1

      MGRUclips Account Yep - those second order high pass filters are pretty useless... Especially with the alignment issues in these things. Oh well, cheap will do what cheap does

      These are just cheap. I have some Aiwa speakers that have better components, but they don’t have the best of crossovers. It is just a capacitor in series as well as a coil in parallel with the tweeter. The woofer runs full range. I actually think my aiwas have some potential to sound good, better than some modern stuff.

    I think the reverb you were hearing could have indeed been the distance between the midrange and the woofer if the woofer was running full range. On the other hand, I think it was more likely that cheap plastic back on the box where the midrange was located. That seemed thin and resonant, so it was probably ringing.

    Hey Garret, I fixed up a system from the 1960s for my grandparents and they are 16 ohm 10 watt. But they were loud, I could use them outside and only need turn them up a little and they were blasting. I was wondering if you knew why they were so loud but only 10 watts? Thanks.

    • @CameraKid2
      @CameraKid2 6 лет назад

      It's because of efficiency. Judging by other speakers from that time period, the speakers you were fixing up were probably around 101dB/w (but I could be wrong). Since I'm really bad at explaining things, here's an article about efficiency: www.lifewire.com/amp-power-speaker-efficiency-3135077

    What’s with these 2000s speakers being so ugly? I have a pair of Panasonic’s and they have a similar woofer at the back style. They don’t seem to make any noise when I plugged one of them in. They also need to be bi amped it says it on the front but I don’t know why that would be a selling point

    Is it just because the midrange is open back?
    EDIT: I saw there was a cover on there so it is probably comb filtering between the midrange driver and the midrange in the woofer with no low pass that is stepped back, causing a half wave cancellation.

    Doubt the difference in distance is an issue. The delay would be less than 1 ms, and the frequencies at which it would be an issue, again only for phasing, would be > 1 kHz. As far as the sound goes, the only thing thats affected is the phasing, which is why good hi-fi units have the speakers in line so there are no phasing issues or differences in reflection of the higher frequency sounds that have wavelengths too short to be omnidirectional. More likely its a cheap cabinet or something. Edit: Doesn't help that theres no acoustical batting.

    6 ohm is a weird impedance value for speakers. Usually 2-way or 3-way speakers of reasonable quality would have 4 or 8 ohms impedance as standard.
    Those look like cheap-ass knock-offs of TEAC, Panasonic or SHARP shelf system speakers.
