I wonder if today, somewhere, Rick and Syd are making songs together once again? Not too much people notice it, but the keyboards on Dominoes are just heavenly beautiful, as all of Rick's music, I think he was the perfect complement for Syd's crazy ideas. Rest In Peace, Rick and Syd :)
I always really liked the part in the song when he says,"Overheard a lark today...losing when my mind's astray." I love Syd's voice on that part. It's haunting.
One of Syd's saddest songs: you know he knows what's happening to him. The sadness and melancholy of this song must have stayed with Gilmour all these years. His beautiful, understated rendition shows how much he understands it. A very loving tribute, I think, which actually made me cry a little.
+londonemski Agree - an excellent comment. Dominoes is such a sad, 'down' song but this is a wonderful rendition. An album of Barrett songs from David would be marvellous, but somehow unlike I think. RIP Madcap
i think because Dave was his best friend Dave dragged syd out of bed and got his 1st album together, dave never lost faith in syd and the immensity of just how fucking great syds songs were...thats why DG plays Syds songs now...RKB RIP x

Didn't know Gilmour covered this Syd song. Makes sense since I heard him talking about this song with praise in a clip before. It's nice to hear...The music is all that matters to me. All the speculation is futile as long as we keep strumming and singing.
At least should be David Gilmour & Rick Wright..I'll never understand why the best musician of Pink Floyd and the second creative genius after Syd is allways so underrated and even omitted... Richard allways had his own style and musical vision and gave it to the pink Floyd sound..David only took the style , the slide, the echo rec and the Avan Garde from Syd's and developed his own up from that.. and although a great musician, allways lacks the level of creativity and imagination necessary to be called a genius. Pink Floyd with Gilmour instead of Syd from the beginning wouldn't have been Pink Floyd..but another blues rock from the batch.. Thanks Syd and Richard for creating the pink Floyd sound we all love. Also, thanks Gilmour for being a great imitator and take Syd's place once he couldn't follow. Thanks to this we had more pink Floyd than two LP's, although all the stuff after waters left is pure shit..
@@borjanarganes lmaooo. The division bell is incredible, a momentary lapse of reason is okay, the endless river is good and if you think rogers was the brains behind PF then listen to the final cut and tell me it isnt one of if not THE worst pink floyd album, roger is EXTREMELY overrated as a member of pf but i still really like some of his discography. The song ''three wishes'' is really brilliant.
Exactly, maybe we can even see how it may have worked out if he continued writing songs and they were performing, as it was originally planned. Having heard all PF albums, and much of the solo works I must say that the guys were at their best when they were making music all together, with Syd as an inspiration. :) So, in fact, it could have hardly turned out better than it did.
You are right imperial... my opinion was based on the rough studio recording i have of this song... after your comment i heard the produced track where there really is Rick on keyboards... Thanks...
To Gilmour, Mason, and especially WATERS (I will leave Rick out of this): So full of artless jealousy is GUILT, It spills itself in fearing to be spilt. (William Shakespeare). RIP, SYD BARRETT!
Having his full band on this song was in poor judgement. If you wanna hear the kick-ass version of "Dominos," go to the 2002 Meltdown Concert, here on YT. There are a few other gems on that DVD, too...
Townshend has been making those comments since '65 about everyone from the Beatles to the Who themselves. He gets very hung up on "quality" as if thats what rock is reliant on. obviously barrett at 20 yrs old was not a polished guitar player. nor did he need to be. the floyd benefited from him NOT being technically sound. it was his creativity & originality that made him and the band stand out!!!!!!
Well it was his band. He named it. He got them through the underground and to fame and a record deal. If his behavior was too much for them to cope with then they should have formed a new band without him instead of ridding his coat tails for the rest of their careers and creating song after song after song about poor ol crazy Syd. Nothing without him came close to the creative level of Piper which certainly much of which derived. Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk is all we were left with...
you are missing the point. Syd made something from nothing. He got them the contract because he WAS pink floyd. Maybe he was not as technically proficient of a guitar player but creatively he was beyond the others. There could not have been a Dark Side of the Moon without Astronomy Domine. On Interstellar Overdrive he does some pretty amazing and unprecedented things with the guitar. Gilmour admits to ridding his coat tails via the Barrett statue in the High Hopes video and in interviews.
an excellent song Master Gilomour... but we need the Syd's guitar... but he exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage How we wish, how we wish he were here...
no imerialpod... rick was not in the orginal song... however it indeed is good to see him covering this song by syd... the original is an accoustic by syd, however it feels david has atleast some input in the original because you can hear his voice is the rough recordings...
Barretts music was so intensely personal, coming from a scary place that he alone inhabited...cover versions therefore seem kinda pointless and inauthentic
always the fight about Syd Barrett, always the fight!! I just wanted to see Gilmour playing this beautiful song, and never fails to read comments like yours still fighting about the same point. For some reason I think you're the same guy who used to change his user name and post comments just to show that you had a cause and others too, but it was the same guy all the time with different names. Give it up 1ndi64! it's that you again?????
I'm thinking that it might be a little tiny taste of what they could have done together as a five member group. I've always thought David was the one more musical.
What about Animals? My favorite Pink Floyd album, mostly orchestrated by Roger as well, and brilliant beyond words. Floyd did many things very well through many different incarnations, none better than the epicness of Animals.
I am not saying they would have been this or that if they kept Syd. But I think that they should have gone and had their own band with their own name rather than remove Syd from his own creation. Now days people sue but of course Syd wasnt going to do that...
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I wish the dominoes were here and matilda mother and echoes and Gerald the mouse and my bike but I borrowed it
@bassmasta9845223 you could be right but like gilmour says "theres some good songs on there" i wouldnt even call him crazy as such, seems like he had some kind of breakdown partialy drug induced or not but yea i can see why the other band members would get pissed off with him walkig of stage and the like. drug induced mental problems are quite common in early 20's but you can hardly call him vegetableman lol
Gilmour is a better performer. Barrett is a better composer. Gilmour shows how great Barrett was as composer. I wish he did an entire album of Barrett songs, so that a large audience can enjoy the strength of Barrett compositions. No one does this better than Gilmour, I think.
I love barret, but he was no way a better composer.... Wish You Were Here, Childhood's End, high hopes, parts of echoes alongside Rick, same with Shine On You Crazy Diamond.... (talking about the melody, not the lyrics).
Syd Barrett's "Dominoes" was more or less ripped off by Gilmour on "Money." It's his take on "Dominoes." Basically, the entire post-Barrett success that Pink Floyd had was based on exploiting or ripping off Syd Barrett in one way or another. Dark Side of the Moon is about a man going mad. Wish You Were Here is about Syd and him going mad. The Wall is about -- you guessed it -- a rock star going mad.

+George Meladze that be like telling PF to tour the album AHM
Joe A. Maybe, but covering a couple of Syd Barrett's songs would be interresting. We could compare.
Agreed. Gilmour's interpretations of Barrett's material are wonderful. He really should record an album of them.
I always really liked the part in the song when he says,"Overheard a lark today...losing when my mind's astray." I love Syd's voice on that part. It's haunting.

Syd was ahead of his time. Pure genius!!!!!!
Syd barrets jazz masterpiece, the doors would have heard the original and borrowed from it just like every other song/songwriter!
It's not a sad song at all. It's wholesome and peaceful.
Robyn Hitchcock said "you can't really beat dominoes as a song"
I agree I love this song, it's fantastic.
the reverse delay sounds great in this version...really captures the feel of the song and a great way to simulate syds backwards lead guitar
So sad..so beautiful. ..
Syd was an entirely different level of creative genius. The kind this world could not accommodate nor fully comprehend.
