I love gnolls!!! Nerdarchy made an awesome player race for them. Its balanced it’s based of there actual abilities. They are so wild and vicious and there hyena people!
Don't sleep on Wildhunt as a barbarian, especially a beast barbarian. Being able to recklessly attack and negate all the advantage attacks thrown back against you is huge and it really sells the theme of the relentlessly overwhelming attacks of the bestial rage. Grab yourself the slasher feat and beast barbarian out and your suddenly throwing out a fully of attacks that reduce your enemies speed and on crits (and don't forget your rolling more dice, because your attacking recklessly AND your making an additional form of the beast claw attacks that are also reckless) your odds of getting crits semi regularly are much higher - just under 20% of the time if your are making two attacks (and thus rolling 4 dice). The slasher feat means your crits give your opponent disadvantage. SO now your overwhelming your prey by attacking at advantage and not only do they not get advantage back against you but they have a nearly 20% chance of having disadvantage - thats very strong indeed and really sells the theme of this apex predator that just brutally savages its foes. And if they run - you can track them and the hunt is on!
That is really strong. That’s impressive. It never even crossed my mind the synergy that wild hunt has. That actually blew my mind.
@@TheSinisterheroes yeah, I was playing around with the idea of playing a Bruce Banner and Hulk or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde style character and the synergy and theme really fitted together. I'm going to theme it that my character (Dr Bartabus Broon) brewed and drunk a potion designed to harness the adaptive power of nature to cure all diseases, but it went tragically wrong and he turned into a wild lizard like apex predator called Skrilla. Now he's been expelled from university and, years later after living in a remote community, is being hunted by strange trappers who want to take him alive for reasons unknown.
I really enjoy that idea. You get this great open pathway to be any alignment, and it lets the dm have a great opportunity to pull your character into the story with that open ended being hunted theme.
That works. That works so much.
Wizards can utilize Swiftstride by having their Familiar hiding in their pockets. This makes the Wizard extremely mobile, and even moreso when they're in a pickle. This works because the creature doesn't have to be hostile, simply a creature ending their turn 5-ft of you.
If you're looking for some damage while in the thick of combat, grab Athlete Feat and have a STR 14. Run diagonal atop a creature (5-ft) and perform a running high jump available through Athlete' Feat, jumping 5-ft (3 + STR Mod). They can't AoO when you jump out of range. You fall 10-ft to the ground, landing on a creature who must make a DC15 Dex Save or split the Fall Damage between you two & you both fall Prone. You can get up from Prone with 5-ft of Movement on your turn later.
Like a pounce attack, like the hunter from left for dead? Ohhh I am getting some ideas now. I see your thinking is very out of the box
Beasthide + Bear Totem Barb is also another crazy combo. Resistance to all damage except psychic, 1+ to ac, and temporary hit points make you insanely tanky. Also the rp potential is pretty interesting to, since your Shifter is manifesting thier lycanthropy heritage in a more spiritual way due to them being a Totem Barbarian rather then a physical way like the Beast Barbarian.
The synergy between shifters and barbarians is a beautiful thing! I must say that in truth it makes me like the barbarians so much more when I combine the two.

We had a wildhunt shifter hunter ranger in the rime of the frostmaiden campaign. He was a loner, scowls a lot and didn’t want to connect to the party. We didn’t learn til later that he grew up on the streets and he joined the zhentarim guild out of desperation. He ran to Icewind Dale to escape because he was tired of having a leash on him with people controlling him with blackmail.
That’s cool that explains the slow to trust and it compliments the self sufficient side of the shifter. Smart character building on there part it works so well with the existing lore and still give an opportunity to be fresh and rewarding.
What a great backstory. Which of the 3 shifting options did he use more?
@@creedence2587 He actually didn’t use any shifts during the campaign but he used mark the scent for tracking creatures that tried to run away.
I figured wild hunt would be very useful as icewind dale has a very difficult survival level.

I find wildhunt great with barbarian as it completely cancels out the negative from Reckless Attack!
Barbarians and shifters for pretty hand in hand. I feel there is a natural affinity to them and a theme that runs really well.

Greetings time to end today's TMNT character concept Spee we've been doing today and now it's time for Splinter and this character's name is Split Softshell a Shifter way of the Ascended Dragon monk with a rat shift form Split is the mentor and father of Luke, Millard, Donald and Wrath Softshell Split is a kind and caring individual who prefers to avoid combat if possible and often prefers to be stealthy and has a huge rivalry with a former friend turned enemy who now is only refered to as Nemesis who betrayed him and killed his lover because Split fell in love with the same woman that Nemesis and out of rage and jealousy Nemesis tried to kill both Split and he's lover but only succeeded in killing his lover and now Split and his sons must face Nemesis because his old rival wants to finish what he started starting with Split's sons Split Softshell is Lawful good
I like the rat shift aesthetic. I also like how you can tie a character to someone to protect. Because you can definitely meddle with that aspect to force cool concepts. You did well incorporating splinters personality, though why ascended dragon? I know you have a reason.
@@TheSinisterheroes it's mostly because the ascended Dragon is the most disciplined of the Monk subclasses in my opinion and splinter is all about preaching discipline to his sons also I thought it would add an unexpected cool factor but I suppose if you want way of the open hand would also make sense but that's too bland for my tastes
