I had the same problem in my 2005 LJ. It was running just fine, with a brand new battery, and then suddenly it wouldn't start. I had lights on my dash, radio, etc., and I heard one small click (that sounded like it was coming from the interior fuse box behind glove compartment) when I tried to turn the key. Then it did nothing, didn't even attempt to turn over. I watched this video, followed the steps, and it cranked right up.I bought a new switch and actuator at my local advance (they were in stock) for about $60. This video saved me so much time and money...ha, and as stressed out as I was about my car not starting, the narration was actually pretty funny, which certainly helped...thanks so much!!!

Your last comment highlights how important it is to have a logical diagnostic sequence for these kind of repairs. The more emphasis you can put on real time thinking and how you made your way to the correct diagnosis, the better. Thanks!

Yes. i did a tune up a few months back, plug, wires cap rotor. But then the jeep sat for 2 months and its been raining ALOT lately. After i gave it a few revs and reset the CEL. she was running like new. My brother has no car and wanted something to play with. its perfect for him.

Thanks for the info!!! I have a 2013 Wrangler that had a no-crank starting problem. Took it to the dealer and 2 shops no one was able to identify the problem. after viewing your videos identified the ignition switch as the problem. swapped it in less than 15 minutes and has been working perfectly every time!!

Your video was amazingly helpful (2002 TJ). When we took the pieces apart we the little broken metal contact fell to the floor mat confirming our problem was identical to yours. The links were very helpful too. Ordered the parts on Amazon and they were delivered the next day. One of the few repairs that went off without a hitch... thanks to you. Very much appreciated.

Dude! Your video is still saving people!!! Saved me today as a matter of fact. Had the same issue in my 06 Liberty. Key felt like it wouldn’t turn all the way to start. Ended up being the actuator metal piece broke like ALL THE REST. It’s the exact same setup!!!Thanks for the info man!

It took at least a half hour to narrow down to proving the ig. switch failed. I suspected it right away, but check anyway. Once it was off the break was easy to spot. The fragment fell out and caught my eye.

Big thank you for this video... it would’ve taken weeks and hundreds of $ to find the problem. I was convinced that my problem was the ignition switch/ actuator before process of Illumination (testing the starter, battery, etc)... as soon as I pulled it apart, a tiny piece of metal fell out. Fixed it the same day and cost me $80 because I didn’t have the special t tools... thank you and keep posting Jeep vids for guys like me

Thanks so much. I really wish that I would've seen this video before I purchased a new starter, and a starter module, Thinking that was my problem. I greatly appreciate it. The only problem that I had was the screws were "safety screws" I only had the regular T-Bits without the center hole in them. So, I purchased a set after I realized that it took the special bit. Thanks again for the awesome video and your help.

When I saw the plastic all over the cylinder, I initially assumed that was your culprit. Crappy-quality plastics are a scourge these days, in everything from vehicles to appliances. But then you showed that it was the metal in this instance, which was a little bit more surprising. But hey, plenty of metal full of impurities makes its way here as well, so even that's not too surprising.

Lol! At least you still have your sense of humor! Thanks for broadcast! I so didn't see where that spring went. If the actuator isn't broken can you just replace the switch? I have a 2005 PT Cruiser lost communication to OBD2 port they say it's common for the ignition switch to go bad and cause this... I'm hoping I haven't been able to keep the car running it wants to stall and does. So to recap I may need just the switch... if I need the actuator is it a seperate part I always have to special order around here I hate it! The barrel for the key I don't have to order right! Thanks!

  • @SeanBZA
    @SeanBZA 11 лет назад

Mine has no park interlock but you need a new bolt to replace the break head one you have to drill out to undo the barrel mechanism so you can replace the switch body. At least you only need a Phillips screwdriver and a T15 to undo everything aside from the 24 socket to take the steering wheel off. At least VW has the parts cheap, and the "second source" parts are half the price and the same part you buy from the agent though it has only a taillight warranty.

Thanks for the video. I ordered the actuator and ignition switch off amazon and replaced it last year and that did the trick. this year it did it again just had the no start. took the ignition switch off and pushed clutch in and turned ignition switch with a screw driver and no problem. turns out the ignition switch rocks down when the key is turned to start jeep. I just zip tied it up and starts every time now. I can't believe the only thing holding that ignition switch on is a itty bitty torx bolt. ridiculous!

there is a copper tab with a tiny spring that locks the steering column it only locks into place when pressed back the easiest way i found is to slide the plastic insert in with a small screwdriver this will lock in that copper tab and spring then you can slide in the actuator. i put the key switch and actuator together and then put it in...... this is a critical step in the process i couldn't get it together otherwise

Hey Really, have been having the same problem, and been looking for broken wires or maybe the transmission crank sensor. You know how the ignition switch is turned to the start position, and the vehicle actually cranks the engine over after a slight hesitation. Well it's been intermittently, so I wonder if I have the same problem. Because the other day, it just did not crank over at all. Hate to get stuck somewhere with NO tools.

    Great video indeed!
My '05 Jeep Liberty has a remote start that works well (so starter motor works) but doing the same with the key doesn't even crank! Radio turns off when I'm "starting" the engine with key. Occasionally, when I'm about to break the key trying to start the car, it works...I don't believe it was supposed to be like that though.
Actuator pin is fine, and got a new ignition switch just like the $20 one mentioned in the video. Didn't help. I read it somewhere that the remote start might be interfering with the actual key start, but I'm too dumb to understand wiring...
    Any ideas folks? Appreciate it

I had the same exact problem. No Crank, No Fuel, Did 3 days worth of troubleshooting (mostly due to previous issues with the jeep transmission cable being broken... Bought the jeep used and one morning it wouldn't crank... Did the typical TS procedures... check battery cables, check cables to starter, all were good.. realized there wasn't the normal CLICK CLICK CLICK of a dead battery, so I thought NSS (Neutral Safety switch) crawled under my 2005 Jeep wrangler and OMG, The transmission shift linkage was held on by BAILING WIRE lol so it wasn't actually in park... Those cables were almost $200... The cable had 2 issues... Aft connection rod end insert had fallen out on the last owner so he used bailing wire to hold the rod in on the actual transmission shift linkage (Physically moves the position of the transmissions range (P-N-R etc) The front of the cable has a boot, that was torn which allowed the cable to bend and flex in any direction preventing it from fully extending the linkage to Park (Yeah Park is full aft and the linkage-cable wire has to push this linkage full aft to hit park seems counterproductive to me... Safe is full fwd as cable can easily pull it, but to push it should go through R-N-P so you can't have the jeep run away from you... because of a weak cable (Stupid Engineers)...
So when it did this again I figured Cable... had come back off, Nope it was worse but not off. Manually made sure it was in Park... Nothing (No Crank No Fuel) Check small wire on starter, it was terribly frayed (Think AHah I got ya) fixed this still no crank, tested with Multimeter, no 12v power when key turned to start... Hummm... checked all fuses, and relays (all good) Ok I'll fix you ran a jumper... So leave key in run position and run a jumper from starter (small wire spade fitting on starter) ran a wire with an alligator clip on it from starter and just touch the positive battery terminal with other end and SHE CRANKS but no start (No Fuel)... so I was stumped again... Came home and found your video... Going to test to see if this works tomorrow after parts arrive...
Parts The ignition switch is $25 from Autozone ($10 from Amazon) The Ignition switch actuator is $50 from Autozone and $15 from Amazon) Both arrive in one day... Guess Amazon will get the $ and I will report back tomorrow on the result. TYVM for the informative post. Sorry for the long write-up.
    Wade

Yesterday my 2006 TJ went down suddenly while running, tried to crank it again and wouldn't start, I've check the starter directly from the battery and it is working just fine but still won't start, deeper analysis on the jeep with a multimeter and little bit of common sense, all relays & fuses are in a good shape, I did found out that on the fuse box that the fuel, starter & ASD relays are not receiving ground signal to deliver power to the entire system, this cables are directly connected to the ECM, I don't know at this point if this video can be the root cause of my problem or not, although it looks similar, when I put the key & turn on, panel control gets power but just that, it won't start.... what's your opinion...? do you may still have the electrical diagram to verify this..! any help/support will be appreciate it...! thanks

I have a '92 Wrangler YJ, 2.5l 4cyl.. I just bought a new starter recently because of the same thing.. It left me stranded at the park but all of my lights and everything else worked. I just had oil in my starter, but I fixed the leak. This time, it blew a 50 amp alt pwr.2 fuse and also the 10amp I.O.D fuse as well.. I replaced them, and now nothing comes on, my headlights, guage lights and even my guages dont work. I've tested my battery and its not dead. I tried crossing the poles on the starter to try to start it, it acted like it wanted to crank but it started making a sound like boiling water makes so I unhooked it from fear it'd catch fire. Any suggestions? I need help as soon as possible. I've already checked my fuses and relays and they're all good. Another question, if it was my starter.. how could it affect my guages and lights the way it did.

Hi... I own a Jeep Liberty 2008 and over the past 6 months all of a sudden when starting the engine ... the engine doesnt startup like usual and sounds like its going to stall shaking and all and even if I apply some gas nothing seems to happen. I have to shut off the engine and trying again turning the key a little slower and usually starts up fine. So I figured I would take my time when turning the key in the ignition but the issue reoccurred and this week I had to retry 4 times until the engine started properly. No check engine light on .... battery was replace 1.5 years ago. Any ideas? ignition coil issue? sensor? fuel pump? Thanks!! John

Can I ask? Can the ignition switch still turn the motor over but not send power to the injectors? Please help

I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler, it on occasion wont start but you get all the lights, and can push start it. I replaced the starter/solenoid, and got a new factory key as the old one was so worn out it vibrates out. It does start but am wondering if this is the problem. Would this problem you have shown in the repair cause it to not start periodically? I then just move the key back, put in the clutch and keep trying till it starts.

+hackskii @briansmobile1 I'm with this person. My jeep's battery is good, the lights aren't dim, it can be push started. I got it started by touching the ends of the starter relay with a screwdriver while someone pushed the clutch in and turned the key. Will this fix this issue or am I looking at an actual starter issue?

Mine was the starter. No start, no click, lights and radio worked fine with no dimming, and it would start if you push started or touched the terminals on the starter relay while someone turned the key. As soon as I replaced the starter she started up with vigor.

Why don't you ever show how to remove the steering column clam cover? What kind of screws hold it together?

Could the dealership have broken this when they took my dash apart to replace a defective airbag?

Great video, followed your directions and everything went in fine, except my windshield wipers won't work and the radio only works in the accessory position. Can you place these pieces in the wrong way so all the contacts dont meet?

was a loss of power to the lights and electronics part of the symptoms in this instance?
My dome light is bright and the "key in ignition" bell is going off, and all dash electronics seem fine. but once i turn the key to crank the engine i lose all electric power. usually comes back on within 30 seconds.

spitfire260381 Not really. The RFID stuff is piggy back to all of this. It's not mechanical, it's computer side.

My 2001 keep wrangler has had the same issue except it starts from time to time. It sometime starts after cranking the 3rd time but sometimes it does with the first crank and it turns off quick. I'm lost with what it could be the starter and alternator are just fine. Could the ignition switch be the culprit but then why would it start at times. Any ideas?

Had the same problem. Switched the starter and fuel relays. Also, cleaned the MAF sensor. Starts now on the first try.
