Thanks a lot for showing how the 3 parts fit together and how they are clocked. made a daunting task easy to understand. Mine half broke, and would still randomly work. the chunk must have broken off, but stayed in place.
If your ignition switch will still go into the run position, you can start the vehicle, by jumping it at the starter relay. This is much easier than standing on your head to do it under the dash. I have an intermittent issue with my ignition switch, and I have a wire run into my starter relay, that I can energize with the positive battery terminal. I use this on the rare occasion that smacking my steering column won't start my jeep.
THANKYOU, EXCELLENT I MEAN EXCELLENT VIDEO. I WAS STUPID AND REPLACED THE STARTER AND NSS. STILL NOTHIN. I TOOK OFF THE STARTER MODUAL AND A BROKEN PEICE FELL OUT. JUST LIKE YOU IT WAS THE ACTURATOR PIN. A LEG BROKE OFF. THANKYOU AGAIN! I HAVE A 99 JEEP CHEROKEE 4L SPORT AUTO TRANS AND 4WD IF ANYONE HAS THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR
dude i really hope the bonus clip works for me. my idiot self bought a 98 that "needed an ignition switch" and the more i looked i finally realized the tab the switch bolts to is broken off the column, not to mention one wire looks like it got super hot, and for some reason i can't find my exact switch. stores only seem to carry the lock cylinder and pin actuator pieces
Looking for help. I think one of these parts is failing for me. My jeep always starts but sometimes I lose the hvac system and blinkers, 4ways still work. If I slightly turn the key towards start I can get everything back to working. I am leaning towards the switch is my guess.
If you stop your video at 5:00 mins it shows a black connecter & wire coming out of the back of the whole ignation switch box(it's silver). It runs down to a part. What is that part called? Mine gets really really hot when the jeep key is only in acc position. Since it hasn't started or cranked in a couple weeks. PLZ PLZ help.
Man, I made this video years ago. I don’t remember the exact part numbers but should be very easy to find on google or at you local auto parts stores. Just tell them the year and Ignition switch pin and ignition switch. I think I do say say one of the part numbers in there somewhere
Good vid i dig it, weird seeing no gauges on the instrument cluster, no tach, or batt volts, oil pressure or even engine temp! just a super large fuel gauge and speedo, and large lights in place of those gauges lol weird lookin , what the hell was jeep thinkin lol ive said before, ive never seen 2 XJs that are 100% alike lol
I want to run a hot wire to my ignition for a 3 fan system. 2 to the ignition and one to replace the original electric fan. Would I tap the red or blue from the ignition?
I would use a test light to figure out which wires are constantly hot and which ones come on when you turn the key. I have my original fan wired so it turns on when the key is on. For the other 2 fans it would be best to run a switch and relays with a temp sensor. There are diagrams on the internet and most fan systems will come with them.
@@RustyRaysGarage my fans come with a fuse and relayed harness. I just need to connect to ignition power somewhere and I think I may do it straight thru the fuse box. Just need to figure out if I'm going to use an empty spot of how to tap an existing fuse.
Question: will the hotwire method have any negative effect? I have heard it can cause issues starting the rig after having been hotwired... please advise
Great video man! So I went to drive my 2000 xj last night and I had no wipers, turn signals or radio. I got to the gas station and read about having the ac blower on would make them not work because its on the same circuit on the ignition switch and sure enough I shut my ac blower off and my wipers and radio worked. Still no turn signals though. Do you believe the ignition switch is my problem before I dig into it? Thank you for your help.
At first it sounds like you have a sticking ignition switch. I’ve had that happen before where the key doesn’t come back far enough and it’s stuck in that point where everything shuts off when you start the jeep. Maybe try lightly turning the key back if it does it again. The fact that it turned on the blower off is kinda weird. I’m not aware of any reason that should work but I don’t know everything haha. Check all your fuses in the kick panel and relays under the hood. I hope something in there helps, let me know! Good luck!
Diana Navarro I had a little bit kit that had a bunch of different size bits. I can’t remember what size exactly but I manly used a torques bit a screw driver bit. The parts are pretty cheap and worth getting new, plus you only have to do the job once haha
I am trying to “hot wire “ as shown at the end of the video but the Jeep won’t stay on. It stalls every time. My key cylinder must be broke. Any suggestions to get me on the road. I’m literally stranded.
Hey if you're Hot Wiring it, you're bypassing your switch, so it would "NOT" be your switch. Probably one of the many problems also listed on youtube, that effects the Jeeps. The fuse Box just in front of your left driver side, front wheel. The wires are know to corrode and break of, yours might just be hanging on by a thread, ready to break off. RUclips has it , just do a search. God Bless !!
Great video! Thanks! One question, did you have any initial problem turning key to start position? Mine turns about 1/4 inch past #2 position and nothin 🤷🏻♂️
Al Morales no. It would go to the start position but wouldn’t engage the switch because the pin was broken. In your case it sounds like something is bound up, could be the same problem. I would start to pull it apart, I’m sure the problem will become apparent in the process. Good luck!
I have a question, so I got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport I turn the key to start and It turns on but no lights in the dashboard, no whippers, no radio. But here the thing i turn the key back on aux and everything works until i start it up then nothing so any suggestions??
Hi did you figured out the problem with you jeep I have the same problem if the car is running nothing works on the dashboard or windows but if I just turn the key dashboard and windows work.
@@javimata2389 Same thing here, no stereo, wipers, or power windows in key on/running but work in acc (back) position. Going to replace the ignition switch as I've been told this is most likley culprit. I'll let you know how it goes in about a week.

Excellent work. Unlike other uploads on the same subject, I could actually see what you were doing. Bonus content is a massive plus. Thanks!

If your key assembly doesnt slide in easy like the video, it isnt lined up. Also my new actuator was a little stiff. Must have to wear in.

My Xj will start fine but won’t turn off could the pin/cable cause that ?
Possibly. You can take the ignition switch off and look at the pin and use a screw driver in the switch to see if it’s the problem.
