"Never question who I am God knows and I know God personally, in fact he let's me call him me" "Stealing us was the smartest thing they ever did.. To bad they don't teach the truth to their kids" The two most influential stanzas in this poem... In my own opinion at least
I will never get why they don't teach you current poets in school to inspire you to put your own take on current problems in the world. I feel that would help a lot more people
I swear. I memorized this on my own in 8th grade easier than Winston Churchills bs. Thank the Most High for the Internet for kids to see things that are skipped over in school
My god. He NEVER ceases to amaze me. I own the movie, have seen it a hundred times, own his albums, books.. and yet every time I hear him, I find something visceral and new. He is so brilliant. Thank you, Saul. I was going to say you make me proud to be a poet, but I ammend that to : you make me proud to be human. Phenomenal!
This movie made me become a writer professionally. I caught it randomly when I was flicking through channels late at night as a 15-year-old kid. Shit changed everything.
Shout out Mr. Faber, my freshman English teacher who showed us this movie. We were learning Shakespeare in class, but he would play Tupac, let us bring in our own songs and then got special permission to show us this movie. All to show how diverse “poetry” can be. I hope you’re doing well Faber.
As powerful as this clip is, it is, here, diminished by the lack of context. The tension built up before this scene is palpable, and Saul's words slice it up and toss it in the air like confetti. Succinctly displays the power of the spoken word. Brilliant.
"I am Horus... son of Osiris... worshiped as Jesus..."; "Stealing us was the smartest thing they ever did!" Thank you Saul. Listen with open minds & hearts descendants of the motherland. Know, who & what you are.
I liked reading it in Seventh Octave.. you could see him spell the 'Serious B, Dog-gone N...." etc.. go on to talk about stars in stripes, and astrology. BUT few know he words it "Sirius B, Dogon... " Alluding even MORE into the stars as Sirius B is one AND the Dogon are an African society noted for their incredible astronomical skill AND the belief that they're descended from the stars.
blupouncch Sirius is the Eastern Star which is Aset which whom the Greeks called Isis! it's an Afrikan thing...it's my ancestors history...that the rest of the world stole! this whole poem was about my ppl in an Greek since.
One of the biggest moments of my life was to hand this man some of my poetry on Valentine’s Day while I looked him in his eyes and thanked him for his talent. Saul is Amazing.
I always liked saul williams. I was sick yesterday and surfing netflix and naturally, with my love of poetry, I had to watch this and I FREAKED out when I saw he was in it
This is like one of my Fav. movies.. It was the first time I ever heard of him and it still stops me in my tracks everytime i see it...awsomenes. true talent.
I seen this movie by accident went to the theater becuz my movie wuz gonna start half hour later. When I saw this n Norfolk, VA at the movie theater n Ghent. I stayed & never saw tha movie I payd for
Thanks so much Saul. Thanks to you i'm in spoken word. And now i'm going to Brave New Voices as part of the Ft. Lauderdale team. All thanks to you man.
Didn't realize he was on def poetry jam and made the song list of demands a while back I remember the song never knew who it was this dude is really dope..
wow I hadn't seen this in years. Still gives me chills, and now that I'm older I understand a lot more of the cultural and historical references that went over my head the first time.
you know I know this poem by heart, I have the book, I have this movie, I have heard and said it so many times, I have seen him live and every time I realize something amazing in it that I never seen before. poet, prophet... just wow man 'stealing us was the smarted thing they ever did' that works on so many levels.. damn
"I forgot what the fuck i was thinking"--the one and only Bonz Malone;the man that actually penned this masterful script. This was when i loved Saul--back in his Nuyorican Cafe-Lyricist Lounge days. This piece almost overwhelms,as if you can actually hear the Orishas being channeled through Saul before your eyes.
Jinx shit I agree with it, music and inventions that we use day to day wouldn't be the same without blacks. Won't get specific because it's just RUclips and you have the internet to research.
@Jordan Church actually you couldn't say that about every race because only 1 race and that's black people. What people call other races is nothing but Africans diluted from their initial culture by way of adaptation.
Still one of the most powerful poetic expressions I've heard to date... Thanks for sharing and keep up the great job building a strong youtube community =) #ThinkKwiz
My skin still flutters from this poem...Looking back at it and starting it he broke down Egyptian mythology and then out of it he showed the birth of Christianity you can split that poem today and people still won’t get it...
Amethyst was also known as a gem that would bring forth the highest, purest aspirations of human kind. Chastity, sobriety, and control over one’s thoughts. The gem would guard against the anger, and the violent or base nature of its wearer. The stone encouraged calm, bravery, and contemplation
"I know God personally. In fact, he lets me call him ME. I'm SIRIUS B. ...Trying to imprison my ASTROLOGY. ...Son of Osiris. Worshipped like Jesus." Whoa. Watched this many, many years ago and was blown away. Now, I get it. Thank you, Saul. RA!
I first heard this sampled on Joey Badass's Amethyst Rockstar. I looked it up and found out this was where it was from. I'm watching the movie now, I just got to this part. This is easily one of my favorite movies.

Wow.
"...I'm Sirius B. Dogon niggas plotted shit lovely..." Great play on words with little known African accomplishments... genius
I will never get why they don't teach you current poets in school to inspire you to put your own take on current problems in the world. I feel that would help a lot more people
Controooooooooooool!
Great point
Because the school system was created in such a way by the very people who want workers not revolutionaries.
I swear. I memorized this on my own in 8th grade easier than Winston Churchills bs. Thank the Most High for the Internet for kids to see things that are skipped over in school
School is not meant to liberate nor educate...especially here in the US

Love the ode to Public Enemy. Took that line and totally Repurposed it.
I got a chance to meet him (Saul Williams) at my school and he is great person and writer. I love his books, poems, and music.
Slam and Saul Williams are both criminally underrated. I watch this movie every once in awhile to remind myself.
facts
Watching this after many years and realizing him doing this in the setting of a PRISON is astonishing.
Phenomenal!

2020, this is still the most meaningful shit. I'm gonna share this with my son the minute that he's old enough to understand it.
I'm always coming back to this video no matter what. It's like the first thing that pops into my head when I think of what to watch
As powerful as this clip is, it is, here, diminished by the lack of context. The tension built up before this scene is palpable, and Saul's words slice it up and toss it in the air like confetti. Succinctly displays the power of the spoken word.
Brilliant.

Slam is an underrated movie with great performances especially Saul Williams.
He explains it in his book The Dead Emcee Scrolls. He didn't write the song, he found a hieroglyphic rhyme in a spray paint can.
love this !!! love the movie even more

i'm talking about the fact that he got the people in the prison yard to focus on him and the fact that his energy and passion was "powerful"
at the end he goes: one, one ... WON!
Man, this just blew me away.
