- Slam (1998) by Marc Levin w/ Saul Williams, Sonja Sohn ...
Slam tells the story of Ray Joshua, an original, gifted young MC trapped in a war-zone housing project known as Dodge City. Unable to find a job, Ray copes with the despair and poverty of his neighborhood by using his wits and verbal talent.
I am now 35. This movie changed my life. I made a pivot in friends and social circles after I say this. I got away from them. I’m still alive. Many of them are not.. RIP to everyone we lost.
Happy for you and very unfortunate for them, they were trapped and thought there was no way out. They merely imprisoned themselves with poor decision makings.
so you a punk
Its been 20 years since Slam. And this scene is proof that it's just as relevant today as it was back then. Sad as it is, Poetic as it is...
I'm an 8th grade teacher in San Francisco, and I teach this poem every year.
Everytime I watch this it just fills me with power
dude you cant even spell fill right...
Goblin Big Boss fuck you bitch
this poem was almost 3 minutes long. but his poem got me lost in time. it felt like it really was an eternity
This movie is still one of my favorite
He is well studied in esoteric philosophy.

What's the name of the movie?
Who needs weapons when words fuelled by passion and creativity penetrate the soul just like bullets !
Hardest sh-t on the internet. Past, present, future. Timeless.
SAUL WILLIAMS...G.O.A.T!!
This movie was unjustly underrated
In his book The Dead Emcee Scrolls he talks about when he went to a poetry reading he read Amethyst Rocks, and he was approached by Marc Levin who was a director and he wanted to make the film Slam.
i love this. especially the rhytm when he says i am not the son of sha clack clack, i am before that, i am before, i am before before
Film is on Hulu right now, you are welcome. This man is a prophet.
MY SPIRIT IS GROWING 7 x 7!!!
SPEAK ON IT KING!!
Classic movie love this since my high school days
Makes me cry it’s so good
Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima. They saw the future. I’m here in 2020 by myself...
Favourite poem ever!
Love this movie
This guy has probably saved hip hop, his poems have meaning, they're not about what normal music is about. Saul, you are the single best spoken word artist out there!
Still🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I saw this movie like 20 + years ago in polish television and recorded it on VHS, but after a couple years my brother deleted it... Television has never played it again since then, but to be honest I'm shocked how good stuff they played back then on tele. I got Boyz n the Hood from TV, menace to society, poetic justice, spike lee joints and mamy other classics. Good ol dayz. Just sayin..
Damn... what he's talking about is beyond what we can comprehend....
when at 2:05 i really had an overwhelming urge to cry...and i did a little. must be the liquor. this gave me chills 4-5 times. AMAZING
I love that this feels live. One take. The reactions are too sincere.
This is so so good. Arrived here thanks to the collective Black quantum futurism. Just on time.
"where my niggas at" "oh shit!" HAHAHHAH he knows those are words of wisdom
7+7=14 that converts to five the essence of harmony, balance and order truly divine.
Saul kills it again. My very first exposure to him was through this movie, but once I heard he had albums and writings I scooped up everything I could.
I loved this when I saw it but have to say to those doubting him... pick up his self titled album and listen to "Talk To Strangers"
Jesus had a wife and she was HIS messiah like that stranger may be yours who holds the subtle knife that cuts through worlds like magic doors.
The basic message depends on each individual, it's what you get from it not what others tell you you should get from it.
This is deeper than the abyss!
This is incredible. What a gift. What an absolute, marvelous gift.
OMG - EXTRAORDINARY
So beautiful
tru dat, slam should be played in every school in the world. tru education.
i remember this, this changed my life
I feel you “7 by 7” on that! 😉
Wow. That hit me, i need to see this movie.

Loved it. . . inspiring and uplifting for my sad, sad soul.
I had heard a part of this poem on his song "Twice the first time" and the original is indeed great! The passion in his voice always gets to me. Beautiful.
Oh, and the sound/video quality of the video is amazing, thank you.
Timeless!

I was watching "the N word" and ever since that movie he inspired. Man he killed this poem. SHA CLACK CLACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ilovethykitty There are black jews in Ethiopia that say they have the book of the covenant. They may or may not, but their beliefs and historic presence is fascinating and remarkable.
I remember when I first heard this, I was like damn I wanna write a poem like that.
He has shown a black man can be elected President of the United States. That alone is more than any President in the last 40 years has done for "minority groupings". And make no mistake. He did it. He runs his own show. Nobody is "running" him.
He's going to do great things. Bet on it.
this is very nice
This particular version of it has never been released. He released a vinyl in 1972 called Elohim that has a song called "Twice the First Time" It has parts of this poem but it is a work in it's own.
@mistermikeyangelo Well said. Time is indeed an illusion, but until people experience the eternal moment that is 'now', time will always appear real.
Amazing as always! But is the woman who sits in front row the actor from the series called "the Wire"? Her face looks so familiar!
Yee thats kima
WOW!!!!!
How doy we know?
Damn. Madd deep stuff!!!!
I agree with you completely. I always enjoy entering a conversation about a video but I am quickly disheartened by the stupidity many posters exhibit when they comment. It always degenerates into profanity and closed-minded insanity.
thats some real stuff
Got dagg dat was bout deep ... DEEEEPPPPPP!!!!
Time is an illusion. There's only ever the NOW, the Eternal Moment ("there is no Death there is only Eternity"), which is why he refers to himself as "that timeless nigga". He's speaking of those suffering from physical & mental decay because of their disconnection from the Eternal Source of All.
Facts let's do that new new
DAMNNNNNNNNNNNN
@professorsockpuppet nice dude, i wish i had teachers like you when i was still in school... but we had to do 20 pushups every time we used a swear-word and nothing controversial was ever discussed. so props to you from germany, for not only being a cool guy (obviously), but to teach something what young people really could be interested in ;)
it's not just that, but also how other races have held back black people in the past, preventing their advancement. Confinement takes many forms.
will somebody please upload the entire movie
heard parts of this in a scruffnuk dust song. as a white 16 year old I'm still moved by this.
Teachers have to teach the shit that they are told to teach. That's why most teachers teach in college to teach what they want to with out any one getting offended.
@ZombieSlaver Those kids are in 8th grade. Almost in high school. They've probably heard worse in the movie theater and from other rappers. One day they'll learn the world is cruel. You get dealt a lot of bullshit. What's the problem with introducing them to a poet who can completely change their view of life and prepare them for what their up against? Idk, just throwing in my two cents. This is one of the strongest poems and deliveries I've ever heard. I wish more people would think like Saul.
It called heaven on earth here it goes my time in heaven i walking in to my parents don't know me when saw me they said how are you I'm your son please help me they keep asking me the time I wake up I'm still there but my grandmother and my grandfather are there i walking to them how are you go away you making a mistake putting me in jail someone help me they laugh at me what going on how are you planning to get out of here this a dream i wake up at my house this is my peom
I've taught in public schools with little family involvement. If I taught in a public school with overprotective parents who think I might be poisoning their children with dirty words in a poem, I might have gotten chewed out. My students generally like what I teach, so I don't have any problems.
I search for clack clack clack clack clack clack clack clack and I got this
1:52 dont shoot the children I shout, dont shoot the children [use in sample song]
Is this where Daniel Caesar -Get you video is inspired from?
Kima from the wire!

If you're going to do spoken word, this is how it's done.
wish i had a teacher that taught decent poems other than half-cast.
It's a technique.
@GhostVirusx90 That Agard geezer is on borrowed time.
