i honestly don't think people are giving common the respect he deserves. Common is one of the greats s and Bilal always slays.
He lost point I feel with a lot of people when he said in order for racism to die black people need to reach out our hands in love to white people (really?!?). We did that and MLK was shot in the face for it....I'm good and done.
Olaorun67 well you have to keep in mind that although we have been oppressed by these people for years alot of their children want to change. I've seen prejudice against white people from some of my brothers and sisters and it bothers me. We can never truly have peace if we do not make this a team effort. When we falsely accuse people of being racist because other people of their race are racist we are showing prejudice towards them and distancing ourselves from them. We need to all understand that some white people want change. Of course there are those who don't and we can have a field day on them.

Black America's national anthem!!!! I can only see my ancestors faces when I hear this song. Thank you for all involved in this marvelous creation!!!
This documentry should be shown in all junior classrooms worldwide,
Our professor made us watch it cuz we had an assignment on it she even included it in our exam nevertheless the documentary made me cry a lot
i agree
Pg 16.
There's a lot of explicit violent and dead people, also it shows messages you need to know things y be able to process it to unerstand.
It may be good show it to teenagers
Not junior, but definitely high school. Emmett Till would have been too much for me to handle when I was younger... it’s still too much for me now.
@@jjanon2371 You know, I hate to be that guy, especially because is a good documentary that help a lot of people, you included.
But it's a documentary that speaks about a problem of the USA, and many countries doesn't have those issues; having anothers.
For example, until a wave of haitians inmigrants, in my country, Chile, there were almost none afroamerican, and all racist problem was about europeans, indian y mestice descendents, but actually people use words as blacks or nigga whit indians, even if their skin was much whiter than an actual afroamerican.
So, why did that happens? Well, most culture were movies, tv shows, books, etc. From the USA, and people replace the racist issue for the US racism even if it was much different.
So, what I'm trying to say is that USA use to think their issues are the ounly world issues, but no; and makes a lot of damage when an issue became invisible and replaced for an USA one that actually didn't happen in the local country
I always loved Common but I have a newly found love and respect for him. Since day one he spoke on social issues around the world, and now some 25 years later he is still on point.. that is true love, dedication, and commitment! Go ahead Common its your lane.. thank you for constantly giving the conscious something to feed on.
ralph ellison It just common sense really. hence the name.
Just heard this at the end of the new Netflix documentary "13th"by Ava DuVernay (SELMA.) It deals with the exact issues mentioned in this song---which is great,BTW, but good luck actually hearing it on the radio.
Definitely check out "13th" ,btw.
Kirk Wood my comment came after knowing about Common sense the 90's. seems that he have been able to drop a hit on every album, but the rest of what he dropped was his way of expessing his love for hiphop. There are artist who enjoy Hiphop not because they are being heard on the radio.. we know who directs the programing for radio. Again.. I have a new found respect for Common because I know that he is truly conscious of the music he is making.. its not necessarily for the radio.
Benny Blanco hmmm?
I am a white, european and 101% convinced Metalhead, and I absolutely LOVE Common.
That's just to show how great and soulful this artist is.
ayyyyy media studies students who now love this song whaddup?!
It's real hip-hop music for the soul, y'all!!

I couldn't do nothing but cry when I first heard this. We are going to continue to sing our way to glory. I can hear my ancestors singing too..... FREEDOM, FREEDOM COME.....HOLD ON, WON'T BE LONG💞❤️💯💯💯💯
These lyrics shake the earth we stand on, and rock our core!!
"You shot me with your ray gun (Reagan) and now you wanna tramp (Trump) me."
BARS!
Barz iz all Common kno 😂😂
Could you explain the meaning behind it? I'm not American, that's why.
@@LPPL-y1v There's a whole lot to it. Reagan's policies basically started up the Prison Industrial Complex, making it profitable for the private sector to mass incarcerate the people. This lended itself toward police putting people in jail for any reason they could find, and since the poor can't afford bail, they just sit in prison until they get a trial, or don't, and it has stayed that way since. With the history of America up to that point, only very, very few African Americans had any chance of staying OUT of prison, 'criminal' or not (refer to Kalief Browder's case, Exonerated Five/Central Park Jogger case).
Now, regarding the Trump situation, well, America's policies were/are trending towards more assistance/reform for the Justice system, however looking at, again, the history of the Justice system and every single time that's been reformed, it's only expected that Trump is just going to reshape it the same way it's always been reshaped, subtly veiled racism and oppression for anyone that isn't white. Keep in mind, Trump also very famously put out an ad asking for the death penalty for the teenagers who were imprisoned on false charges in the Central Park Jogger case for literally no reason other than to play on the fear of the public.
@@karadrine thank you
Common always has bars! That’s why he’s awesome

Slacker I swear I was about to say that....
Props to Gil Scott Heron for the "Ray Gun" moniker. He's the first person I heard say that in his piece "B Movie" from 1981.

Best of luck! Can’t wait until we’re done.
Still confused about the meaning of this video, someone explain?
Most people don't fuck with Common even though he speaks on real shit just like Cole Kendrick and many other conscious rappers today. He's very slept on. Because he says what most are afraid to talk about. Just like those I mentioned above.
CrownPrinceCam nah their songs are pretty boring maybe thats why no one fucks wit it
Y'all, go back and listen to this again. I guarantee there's something new you'll find buried in these INCREDIBLE lyrics
Most underated rapper of our time
DEFO
Mya Sando, and Big Sean as well
One of the most genius songs ever. 💥
The events with George Floyd brought me to this song, I've heard it before long time ago but I wanted to meditate on what's been happening, Common thank you for your creativity and REALNESS.... YOU are music Skin-folk ✊🏾
This song grips my soul my eyes feel you can hear the pain in Bilals vocals. Prayers to all the brothers and sisters who unjustly watched the sun rise and set behind the walls.
It is so sad so many innocent black lives in prison!
Common is UNMATCHED with his poetry. You can tell when you hear him that Hip Hop just spills out of him. It's easy to him. He just feels it and I love that. It's why he's been my one of my favs since I was a kid.
"We got free them so they can free us, America's chance to come to Jesus "
Dope line so much in that bar but only people freeing us is us..
The ancestors are raising their fists HIGH into the air, in: utmost appreciation...Salute, brethren.
And, RESPECT.
this song is so powerful..
Southern leaves, southern trees we hung from
Barren souls, heroic songs unsung
Forgive them father they know this knot is undone
Tied with the rope that my grandmother died
Pride of the pilgrims affect lives of millions
Since slave days separating, fathers from children
Institution ain't just a building
But a method, of having black and brown bodies fill them
We ain't seen as human beings with feelings
Will the U.S. Ever be us? Lord willing!
For now we know, the new Jim Crow
They stop, search and arrest our souls
Police and policies patrol philosophies of control
A cruel hand taking hold
We let go to free them so we can free us
America's moment to come to Jesus
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
The caged birds sings for freedom to bring
Black bodies being lost in the american dream
Blood of black being, a pastoral scene
Slavery's still alive, check amendment 13
Not whips and chains, all subliminal
Instead of 'nigga' they use the word 'criminal'
Sweet land of liberty, incarcerated country
Shot me with your ray-gun
And now you want to trump me
Prison is a business, America's the company
Investing in injustice, fear and long suffering
We staring in the face of hate again
The same hate they say will make america great again
No consolation prize for the dehumanized
For america to rise it's a matter of black lives
And we gonna free them, so we can free us
America's moment to come to Jesus
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Freedom (freedom)
Freedom come (freedom come)
Hold on (hold on)
Won't be long (won't be long)
Oh, freedom, won't be long
thank-you so much you write nice.
👍🏾
Thank you.
These lyrics capture so much... so many lives lost to racism; lost to mass incarceration; and, lost in ignorance. My heart is so full of sadness, to have lived 'through it' - my Black American experience - to have known its painful influence, much more intensely doled out over the lives of my forebearers, their forebearers and their ancestors, too. Yet, I'm also an expanded vessel; one with a depth that no earth-bound person can reach, possessed of a capacity that draws from those very same forebearers' spirit.
"Freedom, freedom come..." I'm holding on with all that I have left. Please don't be long.
This goes so deep like back to Africa roots no where you came from so you know where you are going
long live to common, nas, talib and mos!!!!!!! hope they be dropping jewels for another 100 years!

Common is dropping knowledge as usual!! His words (flow) is better than his speeches on black issues.. Much respect!
Wisdom Reflects Earth well said Queen
Wisdom Reflects Earth words and flow are two different things. words are obviously the lyrics. flow is the rhythm of the instruments and the singing, and also their style. But damn this is good stuff
Discount L lol ok
I know
Powerful.
Haven’t seen “13” .. heard of it though… just here because common is a legend that’s consistently been putting out quality music with needed messages. I knew this was the song i’d be coming to after listening to this album.
I'm French and thought the documentary was mind blowing,. After watching I really took an interest in the African American history.
I pray that we finally get the freedom and liberation that we’ve been crying for, I pray we get treated like humans rather than animals that need to be caged up. I pray for a day where we see peace
Bilal is a unique human & artist in his anti-commercial integrity. Makes this powerful track all the more better! Excellent production. When that horn comes in! *SMOOTH*
Also the fact it's in B&W reminds me of the great Gordon Parks & Lazlo Kovacs.
My great great grandfather was hung in Africa during slavery. He was a tribal man. He fought hard for his rights. His blood runs in mine and songs like these make me have an out of body experience.
Powerful statement!❤
Just heard this song for the first time at a protest last night in Texas. Very powerful ✊🏼
Where are you now Common, we need you now more then ever...Please...
This song needs to relive...RIGHT NOW!!!!!
Beautiful...Common, Robert Glasper, Bilal & Andra Day 💜

Great way to start my day...East Coast of Canada..struggling during these Holidays. Yet I have my faith and Common, to guide me. Respect
I love COMMON's music and message. Let me tell you who I am. An Italian Canadian, 69 years old, with a french quebecer's name. I play Common's music to friends of my age , to the younger generations who like or love hip hop. They all say I don't want someone preaching to me in my music. I know for a fact to pass my message along to my children, my grand children, and already to my great grand children it will sound like preaching. Common is an incredible artist and my preacher of choice
I am here because of Netflix documentary of black people history in the united state, this song was in the documentary, who is here because of Netflix? ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏿✊🏿✊🏾
Me too! from Japan 🇯🇵
First heard this on the documentary but im here because #blacklivesmatter
I am. ✊🏼
Yep, I just finished 13TH. I hardly ever look up music videos, but did today when it ended.
Black life matter is just chrologic of révolution.... ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏿
I just saw this Netflix documentary - it made me think a lot - the song is great.
I liked even before watching because this song is everything !! If you haven't watch 13th yet definitely do it now !!!!
Breezy Walkerz my teacher at my school had us watch and take notes on the 13th I knew something wasn't write with this country now I no exactly what's going on its real eye opening this country is really on letting black men an women do any thing
juzarien shoulders, I saw "13" . it tells the truth about Black & Brown political prisoners incarcerated for the greed of U.S. im reading Angela Davis' book on prison reform. I work with Abe Brown's Prison Crusades. I see the faces of many Black inmates. It's a quite a experience. There's sadness in the air. Yet they hold on hopeing against all odds.
I thank God for hope! America, we as African American people still have hope. We still have a freedom in our hearts that America cannot take away.
Common you never disappointed.

powerful messages and thank for speaking the truth bro. because we need freedom not liberty.
Sad how low the view count is for this song. I'm not surprised though. A lot of us are lost, divided, and broken this day of age. The tough part is how do you educate the many people that don't want to be educated...
Very sad indeed

Bilal's got an amazing voice; it fits amazingly with this song.
This video has a powerful message
Thank you Common you never disappoint! Love Bilal
even when they lock you up you spirit will allways be free believe me
Amazing song. Mind blowing message, may I help to carry it forward. Thank you, 13th, for opening my eyes and my heart. I am embarrassed that they were closed for so long.
Loved hearing this song on #13th! Powerful and Poignant!
God why is my heart so heavy
I watched the movie "13" last night and was enthralled. Really good documentary and this song set it off.
this is rap 💣💥 fuck all that skinny jean mumble rap gimme more thought provoking art
North tree take some time and ask yourself what is Hip Hop, MCeeing, and DJing 4.
North tree this needs to be heard more often. it seems as if beats are what makes songs when back then it was a beat backing up the words you were expressing.
North tree shat ap u L
Common love dude this is what we need in this time of uncertainty
Today's anthem! R.I.P. George Floyd
Equality, respect and most of all LOVE for ALL.
1M views simply not enough for this masterpiece.
The 13th Brought me here! Man I cried some real tears when they played this song at the end. So powerful!
This was very powerful and needed to be heard
Who's here after watching '13' on 'Netflix'?

What an informative documentry it is.
Just finished watching it
Just now
yep
I can't understand how this isn't one of the greatests songs in this era, those fucking lyrics, Common has his mind on the right place, he is conscious and aware of everything, he cares. Thank you for the message.

And still keep Father's apart from there sons use social media now as a weapon
The instruments on this song helps me with my migraines, no cap. Everytime I have a headache I play this, like now and the headache is over. I don't know how and why but man I thank you for this song it never fail to heal me
America is a business. Gotta take money out or things will never change
Trish Thompson but nope. 90% of these clowns just went broke for Christmas
Had to come back to this one today as well as many others. Great song
Common and Bilal always a dynamic force of creativity. Vibes is right on dis ya flow! #Artlives
Freedom must be fought for
Nothing but Truth in this Track! Awesome!
The black square reminds me of the 'prison' that held General Zod and his goons in Superman 2. Great song!
so so needed right now!!!
The struggles we are going thur, Common keep spitting out those hot lyrics !
amen brother, lord please free my son❤
People always ask: Whats wrong with society. The answer lies in the numbers of people consuming ignorance versus people consuming greatness such as this. How does the "cash me outside girl" have 12 million views in 3 days, and this piece of art only have 500k views since December???!! Ignorance is bliss.
Common holding down hip hop
Big up Common keeping it real in 2017, the age when most don't give a fuck about conscious music
King Common
Bilal sings so effortlessly and Common's lyrics are always on point.
This is probably the most powerful, beautiful, and important song that I've ever heard. I look forward to diving into more of Common and Bilal's music, as well as other recommended artists. These lyrics blew me away and the construction of the song is amazing. I've seen 13th countless times (I'm a sociology major with a focus in social problems) but every time I watch it, I make new connections.
Both the song and documentary are tremendous works of art that speak volumes about the social problems persisting in the U.S., and the systemic and institutional racism that has produced and reproduced inequality.

That glorious relief felt with your comment! You're right!! I'm glad there are people balanced like you! Congratulations!
Being agressive is what fucked it up at the first time.
Fear and hate never bring peace or understanding, whether you're initiating or retaliating. That's why he said "We will free them so they can free us." Power structures will keep people down who they feel they can't trust and you can't trust somebody who is remorseful or vengeful.
Deep...Truth...Help us Lord!
So powerful!!! 🔥🔥🔥💯
The song is so powerful, it describes the heartache and pain of black people in America from generation to generation. Its filled with old black civil rights Harmony mixed with modern day jazz and current date Hip Hop. A Master piece...
