Man, it makes me wish I didn't move countries so often growing up. I mean I always felt a bit of that and understand in life we play with the hand we're dealt, but what I'd do to grow up with a best friend and do music together. I never had that. Despite my love for music, my single mom was too busy working her ass off to acknowledge it to the point of helping me become a musician.
I'm now 30. I constantly wanna start making music. I already wasted most of my prime life and still am. I just gotta shift my whole life around. Everything I do is bad habits that lead me nowhere. Smoking weed every day. And don't get me wrong, there's positives to this too. I meditate to a certain extent with weed. It provides calm when my anxiety wants otherwise. And the music I fall in love with is priceless. But making music, that's the next step I gotta work towards. I know I have the ability to learn quickly and do shit. I always surprised people in everything. And I have now 10+ years of guitar playing in my room lol. Yeah, nothing much. But a start I suppose.

I still can't believe a pandemic happened in my lifetime. I assumed it would happen in the far future and be something our great grand children might have to deal with maybe.
The entire world was in a lock down state of some kind. The USA probably had more freedoms during it, but this was a human experience that will go down in history books. I feel like This experience has mentally evolved the human race to a level where we are coping with the consequences of the internet. The internet is a wonderful tool, but I feel like most people have learned that it can be used as a weapon as well to lead people down the wrong road and make them ready to fight for anything even though they are twisting the truth and feeding lies.
We was all locked up like animals for a long time with a real risk of death
It damaged humanity but I also think we needed something like this to learn, understand , and become better as a species to keep mankind living far into the future!!!
We've all lost a lot, but I see a different attitude and way of thinking in general now that gives me hope for the future.
I'm sure we'll never be perfect. But I believe this has made us better and smarter humans.

I rinsed a tape of the headbangers ball tour special that was filmed during that Mary beats Jane/meshuggah run. Robb pretty much introduced the world to Korn.

Refreshing to hear that Marten will vocally say guitar rhythms into his phone on voice memos no matter where he is 😆 so relatable. I have hid around a corner just to say a rhythm I have in my head into my phone so no one hears. Cool to hear Marten in this podcast setting, he is a really cool guy, and great guitarist/songwriter.

I'm wondering if that time of Fredrik and Mårten playing bass in turns on tour was what probably inspired the new direction they took starting from Nothing (I read somewhere that it was initially an all-basses project).

Sorry for double or triple posting or whatever. I really like in the "interview" with Rob Flynn, what seems like Fredrik trolling back in the 90s. He's also my favorite guitarist ever besides Reb Beach. Both influenced by Alan Hogsworth. They goood!!! I like Blasphemer from Mayhem too. He's a great song writer. Whatsoever. I just loved hearing these stories from Marten. Fucking cool considering Ive been into this band since 95.

1963! Discovered The Meshuggah Machine in 1995 a few weeks after DEI debuted, took less than 2 minutes of Future Breed Machine to make me a STUNNED fan for life. In 1995 Opeth debuted as well, but wouldn't hear their music till "Still Life", even though I kept reading about them till that album.
You make me feel REAL old, folks (a "Boomer" by 1 year) 😅.

    from memory:
the MachineHead tour they speak of was originally booked & advertized as MachineHead, CLUTCH & Mary Beats Jane... imagine my utter surprise (as a local crew guy & fairly newly obsessed with the Destroy Erase Improve record) when MESHUGGAH walk into Huxley's (in Berlin) to set up.
MESHUGGAH obliterated & tbh, MachineHead sounded like a Sunday School picnic after Mårten & Co.'s sonic seismology.
apparently CLUTCH had to drop out a few weeks before the tour kicked off as far as i remember.
    fortuitous for MESHUGGAH...?

Not finding the 1 was, combined with the 8 strings and super heavy sound, what got me hooked back in 2002. The song was Stengah. And honestly it's ruined a lot of music for me, not that it bothers me one bit. Now I need music that challenges me either rhythmically or harmonically. Enough said.
But seriously, this whole interview, at least 1h15m in, is super interesting. And most of all it's fun to sort of get to know Mårten as a person. A lot of the history has until now been unknown to me.
