Hi Jim, It was great fun and we were both pretty happy with the results considering the time pressures. The gizmos on the hot shoes are the wireless mic receivers. The 40mm on the z7II would be a super compact setup. What do you mainly shoot?

I love your photography, you just walk out and shoot in the city. I don’t know if it’s confidence, guts or something else but I don’t feel comfortable shooting lots of strangers. Even as a traveler in another country, I always carry my camera everywhere I go and I do take shots (like the London tube) but I really struggle - once I’m away from people it’s a totally different story
Hi Blythe, I’m the same. I don’t generally point a camera at anyone I don’t know. Unless they’re out of focus or they’re a silhouette. I’m not comfortable displaying peoples faces unless I’ve received permission. I know some ‘street’ photographers take photos of anyone and everyone. I’m not comfortable to have my photo taken by strangers, so I try not to do so as well. I think most people feel the same way. London is an amazing place to shoot. Maybe play with slower shutter speeds or silhouettes to get images you like. That way people will be unrecognisable. Enjoy 👍🏻
Well, that was fun!! I refuse :) to 'vote' on the photographs produced. Art ain't a competition I figure and ALL the shots bring me pleasure and are engaging, so my favourite thing is the fact you're going to do this again :) Cheers!

Sadly - it looks like we will not be able to make it to Melbourne, so this will have to be a mental contest - but I will be channeling you! Thanks for the fun!
@@MattIrwinPhotography thanks for your reply and I truly hope it works out somehow. Part of what makes your channel work is you being such a great guy and I’d love to do some shooting and buy you a beer!
Thank 👍🏻 it was great fun. I’ll be putting the 40mm on the z6 to have a smaller kit for filming and general fun stuff. It’s an impressive little performer.
This lens is funny. I got it a while ago and while for some work its not ideal, and I had my camera set wrong at one point while using it, I ended up brushing it off. However recently, I did bring it to a car show and it was super fun to use. The shots came out really nice. The lens is slowly growing on me.
For me it was 3-1 Matt, but it was almost a tie. Round 4 was so close to going the other way to make it 2-2. I like the 40mm! I bought it to use on the Zfc but like it on my Z7II just as much. I also love using crop mode at times on the Z7II to get more reach when needed and cut down on the number of lens in the bag. The challenge was fun.
Hi Jeff, Yep, 40mm is a really versatile length, particularly with crop in the equation. Especially with a higher megapixel body. I really enjoyed it. It’s quality surprised me. I’ll definitely be using it more than I initially anticipated. Importantly, would $200 reverse your vote? 😉 Cheers, Joseph👍🏻
This was a lot of fun and felt like a wild ride the entire time. Is it possible that it was even more fun for the two of you? Loved the head to head nature. If you do it again, I would vote for the 50 and/or 85. Those are my favorites and would love to see what art you two could make with those two beauties under pressure.
Hi Matt, I can say on my part that it was great fun. Matt and I generally have a ball every time we go out shooting. It’s certainly not the best way to produce art, but things turned out okay. I agree that the 85 would be another great lens to work with under pressure. Who knows what we might do next! :-) Glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻 Cheers
It's always something seeing the little lenses on the double gripped bodies. I also use Micro 4/3, and in Micro 4/3 you have two f8 body cap lenses, the 15mm and the 9mm fisheye. I had both a more compact micro 4/3 body and a double gripped body, and I mostly only used the body cap lenses on the double gripped bodies just because the IBIS was better. My double gripped micro 4/3 body died recently (I got it used and it was well worn when I got it) and I haven't had the time to replace it yet. Generally speaking, I do use double gripped bodies more often because my hands shake and the double grip gives me a lot more stability when shooting portrait. The small lens big body situation is a common sight in my world because of this
@@josephsworkshop75 I use it for people photos a lot of times. Oddly enough, at the right distance people look pretty good in it even at the edges of the frame. The distortion is more subtle than some other fisheye lenses I've used and the acceptance angle is 140°. I use the curving edges at the edges of the frame to help me draw more attention to the subject in the photo in the same way as a vignette helps frame the subject. Out of the two Olympus body cap lenses, I would say the 9mm fisheye has much more consistent quality across the frame. The 15mm has lots of aberrations as you move out of the very centre of the lens
Hi Matt & Joe, great video and format! :) Round 4 was best, I like both excellent photos! 👍 I like more a 50mm or 58mm lens, but the 40 seems fun ;) Cheers, Martin
Thanks Martin, Matt and I spoke about this earlier and we agree… round 4 felt the strongest of the night. Really interesting. Both completely different images stylistically. That’s what’s so good about photography. One of my fav lenses is an old 55mm manual micro lens. So I felt the same until I started using this 40mm. The jury is still out for me on which length I prefer. This 40mm is a little gem. Cheers👍🏻
@@josephsworkshop75 Hi Joe, for me it's every single time the most thrilling to be out with another photographer, to share and compare the views and learn from each other! Yes, your and Matts photos are different stylistically, but both photos have strong lines, high contrast, are clear and reduced/abstract in a sense, which all appeals to me ;) Maybe your photo would be great in a 1:1 aspect ratio, too, without the leftmost edge where the bottles are. So cropping from the left. Maybe the lines would guide the eye even more to the walking person :) Interesting. From time to time I find it pleasing to be in a situation, where I have to 'make do' with seldom used gear or a lens, which wouldn't be my first choice in this situation or being under time pressure. This spurs my creativity and forces me to be open minded. And it's so joyful to get a good photo under suboptimal conditions :) Cheers, Martin
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt, difficult question! I'd say the 85 1.2 because I'm waiting for it for a really long time! ;) But in earnest I would suggest ultra wide angle, because I find it difficult to take great wide angle photos (so no 'I need more space' photos). Maybe a 14mm challenge? Cheers Martin

Finally got my Z9 last week almost 8 months after ordering and paying for it from Grays. Still in the deep learning process at the moment though 😅
Hi Peter…. I was thinking of the 8 x 800 minute 800mm session! Congrats on getting the Z9. I’ll never stop learning the ropes with it myself. So enjoy the learning journey. Just remember, regardless of the camera you have in hand the basics never change. I’m thrilled with my Z9. At first I thought it was overkill, but it’s a brilliant tool that helps you realise your images faster. What type of shooting to you intend to use it for?
Peter, there is so much to enjoy. Take your time and savour, it is an astonishing tool, which you can throw anything at and it never breaks a sweat. What lenses are wanting to try out first? Cheers Matt
@@josephsworkshop75 hi, I’m initially using my Z9 for military work and am out on the ranges for the next few weeks to see if I can actually catch a 5.56mm round in flight. The theory is great but I shot around 5000 images with an air rifle at home, just to get my eye in - nothing at all! That’s when I started to use maths and ballistics to figure out how to approach things. A .22in air rifle pellet travels at around 200 m/s. Thus: In 1/125 sec the pellet travels around 1.7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second In 1/250 sec the pellet travels around 0.85m In 1/500 sec the pellet travels around 0.42m In 1/1000 sec the pellet travels around 0.21m So shooting an air rifle pellet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the image frame would need to be at least 2 metres wide to have any chance of catching the pellet in flight. By contrast, 5.56mm ammunition has a muzzle velocity that varies between 851 m/s and 993 m/s, so I’m using 900m/s as a notional starting point. Thus : In 1/125 sec the rifle bullet travels around 7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second In 1/250 sec the rifle bullet travels around 3.5m In 1/500 sec the rifle bullet travels around 1.7m In 1/1000 sec the rifle bullet travels around 0.85m So shooting a bullet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the frame would need to be at least 7m wide, if not closer to 15 metres wide, to have any chance of catching the bullet in flight. Remember that shooting at 1/32,000th sec sounds impressive, but think about what this really means; it means that you are actually missing 31,999ths of every second! What are the chances of the bullet being in exactly the right place within the picture area for the correct 1/32,000th of a second, bearing in mind that you’ve only got 120x chances of grabbing only 120/32,000ths of every second - not good odds! In fact by photographing at slower shutter speeds you significantly increase your chances of catching a bullet in the frame, doubling your chances each time you double the shutter speed. The downside is that IF you catch the bullet in the frame it will exhibit much more movement! So while technology is wonderful, it still needs skill, allied to a huge dollop of luck and being much further away from the subject than you initially think you need to be! Time will tell…
@@peterrussell663 excellent project. So, is your intention to freeze the bullet as best you possibly can in frame? If so I would suggest making a low latency laser trigger. That way, when the bullet triggers the laser (by passing through its beam), a burst will commence. Start with a very wide frame with a black background. Have spotlights shining along the path of the bullet for light reflecting off it. Repeat the test without changing the variables. The bullet will appear somewhere along the path of your very long frame consistently. Then you can use “longer” lenses once you’ve figured out where the bullet will be. It’s a matter of the bullet triggering a laser triggering a shutter release. Sounds like a great project to be involved in. Is it private or commercial work? I wouldn’t rely on chance!!!

We can do 800. Just use walkie-talkies.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I got the 100-400 last week, and finally took the plunge and put the Z9 on order!
I think both of you had strong offerings but, slight edge to Matt, agree that a 28mm non "S" challenge would be fun as well, what was the hot shoe gizmo you both had connected, GPS? I love that 40mm, I haven't mounted on my Z9 yet....only Z7II
Hi Jim,
It was great fun and we were both pretty happy with the results considering the time pressures. The gizmos on the hot shoes are the wireless mic receivers. The 40mm on the z7II would be a super compact setup. What do you mainly shoot?
@@josephsworkshop75 paid shoots Z9 👍🏻…90% Z9 and for less formal shoots Z7II but likely sell Z7ii one day. Enjoying Matt’s videos and you guys are fun!
Degraves Espresso shot is my favorite. Good job!
Hi Blythe,
I’m the same.
Enjoy 👍🏻
@@josephsworkshop75 I would love to be able to as i love cityscape photography
It’s totally ok to capture what feels right. I look for blur, DOF or shadow to allow people their privacy in public.
Well, that was fun!! I refuse :) to 'vote' on the photographs produced. Art ain't a competition I figure and ALL the shots bring me pleasure and are engaging, so my favourite thing is the fact you're going to do this again :) Cheers!

Rounds 1, 3 & 4 for Matt, Round 2 for Joe
I was confused from start to finish- but good to see you both enjoying yourselves
Yeah we sure did have fun.
Hi Jeff,
Yep, 40mm is a really versatile length, particularly with crop in the equation. Especially with a higher megapixel body.
I really enjoyed it. It’s quality surprised me. I’ll definitely be using it more than I initially anticipated.
Importantly, would $200 reverse your vote? 😉
Cheers,
Joseph👍🏻
This was a lot of fun and felt like a wild ride the entire time. Is it possible that it was even more fun for the two of you?
Loved the head to head nature. If you do it again, I would vote for the 50 and/or 85. Those are my favorites and would love to see what art you two could make with those two beauties under pressure.
Hi Matt,
I can say on my part that it was great fun. Matt and I generally have a ball every time we go out shooting. It’s certainly not the best way to produce art, but things turned out okay. I agree that the 85 would be another great lens to work with under pressure. Who knows what we might do next! :-)
Glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻
Cheers
What microphone is on top of your z9s?
The small lens big body situation is a common sight in my world because of this
The larger bodies certainly are more comfortable. What do you use the 9mm fisheye for?
@@Bunnyisms really interesting to take photos of people. Good on you for pushing it’s limits and being creative with its framing. 👍🏻

Thanks Martin,
Matt and I spoke about this earlier and we agree… round 4 felt the strongest of the night. Really interesting. Both completely different images stylistically. That’s what’s so good about photography.
One of my fav lenses is an old 55mm manual micro lens. So I felt the same until I started using this 40mm. The jury is still out for me on which length I prefer. This 40mm is a little gem.
Cheers👍🏻
@@josephsworkshop75 Hi Joe,
for me it's every single time the most thrilling to be out with another photographer, to share and compare the views and learn from each other!
Yes, your and Matts photos are different stylistically, but both photos have strong lines, high contrast, are clear and reduced/abstract in a sense, which all appeals to me ;)
Maybe your photo would be great in a 1:1 aspect ratio, too, without the leftmost edge where the bottles are. So cropping from the left. Maybe the lines would guide the eye even more to the walking person :)
Interesting. From time to time I find it pleasing to be in a situation, where I have to 'make do' with seldom used gear or a lens, which wouldn't be my first choice in this situation or being under time pressure. This spurs my creativity and forces me to be open minded. And it's so joyful to get a good photo under suboptimal conditions :)
Cheers, Martin
Cheers Ernie, we had a ball, and now for the next lens, which would you like to see us do? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt, difficult question! I'd say the 85 1.2 because I'm waiting for it for a really long time! ;)

Matt, I love all your videos, but this one really stood out and was just so entertaining. I found myself smiling the whole video :). Loved it! Too hard to pick a favorite out of the 8. Joe’s 1 & 2 (which was accidentally also labeled as “round 1” ?), and your 1, 3, & 4. But actually, all were really good. I’m planning to head up to Solvang, CA, tomorrow with my wife and was going to bring my 35, 50, and 85 z primes with me. I actually haven’t put the 40 f2 on my z9, since getting it in Feb. - was always on my z6 ii, but after this video, I’m inspired to bring it along. Keep up the great videos!!

Matt and Joe, I don’t think I could stand a 400 minute 400mm session; any more than you could! Great idea and one that I might just try with my colleagues in the UK.
Thus:
In 1/125 sec the pellet travels around 1.7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second
In 1/250 sec the pellet travels around 0.85m
In 1/500 sec the pellet travels around 0.42m
In 1/1000 sec the pellet travels around 0.21m
So shooting an air rifle pellet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the image frame would need to be at least 2 metres wide to have any chance of catching the pellet in flight.
By contrast, 5.56mm ammunition has a muzzle velocity that varies between 851 m/s and 993 m/s, so I’m using 900m/s as a notional starting point.
Thus :
In 1/125 sec the rifle bullet travels around 7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second
In 1/250 sec the rifle bullet travels around 3.5m
In 1/500 sec the rifle bullet travels around 1.7m
In 1/1000 sec the rifle bullet travels around 0.85m
So shooting a bullet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the frame would need to be at least 7m wide, if not closer to 15 metres wide, to have any chance of catching the bullet in flight.
@@peterrussell663 what is triggering the projectile? Can you make it an electronic trigger? (What’s firing the gun?)
