Bought a 2016 pilot new. Still own it. Everything you mentioned happened to mine. Luckily had an extended warrantee which covered everything. The tachometer bouncing / transmission judder pops up about every 30k miles. Drain the transmission fluid, refill. Roll through all the gears including reverse X3 fixes the problem. Great review !
Thanks for the watch and for the feedback. Your confirmation that these issues are real are unfortunate but a reality. Best of luck with it going forward.
I own a 2016 touring, second owner, the keyless ignition problem was solved by the dealership with zero cost, along with a software update for the transmission and a reinforcement for the hood latch. Nailed it. I've had the 2016 for 6 years. Great vehicle, but have faced trans "jutter" at 80k, Start button replaced, and warped front rotors at about 78k. Not too bad overall. Fixed all myself.

Bought brand new a 2017 Touring edition (still own), all problems mentioned have appeared. Already replaced ignition switch my self ( about $65 OEM). Currently getting the emissions problem catalytic converter code, miss fire codes, but still runs like great. I'm a long commuter, car will hit the 165K miles in a week so definitely out of warranty :( but luckily I'm a good DIY mechanic so I'm able to save some $$$ and do most of the maintenance and repairs myself. Thanks for the pointers, will take a look at the fuel injectors first before messing with the catalytic converters. ;)
Really appreciate the feedback! Yes, don’t go changing the cats out before the injectors. If you really want to be sure have someone perform a cylinder AF test to confirm failure. Good luck 👍🏻
I've had all but the start button issue. I've replaced injectors, brake rotors, front struts, and the transmission problem comes on randomly. I've got 255k miles on my 2016 though. It still runs really well.
Can you do this for all Honda makes and models? Every single car reviewer talks about features and performance, it’s nice to be able to know if the car will actually be a headache to own! Thank you for your insight it’s much needed.
I have owned mine for three years. Bought in 2021. Replaced the timing belt and water pump myself, sucks to change trans fluid. But brake caliper slides fail. Can't put a frost plug heater in it, but a hose heater will do the trick.
2016 Pilot Touring AWD, 120K miles Currently, dealing with the service bulletin issue that causes multiple codes to flash at once, and requires fuel injector replacement. My local dealer advised me this would be warranted at no cost to me....however, the parts are on backorder. I can’t help but wonder if I told them I wanted to replace the fuel injectors just for better performance, and am paying out of pocket, that the parts mysteriously would be in stock. 🤔 i’m going to reach out to some out-of-town dealers to see if I can get some help on the issue. (I also had my push button start replaced, which was warranted. And replaced my front struts, but that was due to wear and tear)
@@BCautosolutions - AutoZone, Oriely and other 3rd party non-OEM sites claim to have them in stock, ready to ship. You think it's good to go to a local mechanic to see if they can get the parts in and do it? Or order them myself and have a mechanic do the work? Or does it absolutely need to be done by a dealer in order for the codes to be cleared? Like I said, this being a warranty issue, I can't help but think the parts will be on back order indefinitely.
Couple of things I can add, 2016 pilot touring (elite) in Canada, engine knock sensor failed at about 140000km, out of pocket expense. Tailgate rust under license plate light, rust through, changed tailgate, under warranty. Fan blower motor likes to make noise in cold weather, didn’t bother to change, procedure is easy, oem motor is pricey. Fog light used to be beaten up by rocks/road debris.

Hey there, First off.. thank you for making this video. I am the 3rd owner for a 2016 Honda Pilot recently bought... "Transmission System problem" is on the dash board. I took it to a mechanic that did the transmission fluid flush... after a couple hours of driving the message is still up on the dash board. Would it be safe to say that the prpblem could be the code "P177A" if so, what is that and would it be a costly fix? Thank you in advance for your time and for responding.
Well.......at 58,409 miles it finally happened on my 2016 Pilot Touring. Was driving it on the interstate today and it started losing power, transmission going in and out of gear. The Emissions Controls problem and Transmission problem flashed on the dash. Got it towed to the local Honda dealer now. Waiting to hear the diagnosis. Hope it's just that the injectors need replaced, Honda will pay for it and it fixes the Transmission problem
So far the software update seems to have fixed it. I drove it another 50 -60 miles today with in town and highway driving and it shifted flawlessly!@@BCautosolutions
From my experience with my Mom's Pilot the rotors don't warp, the problem is that the brake pads get really hot and leaves deposits on the rotor surface, causing the pulsations and feeling like warp rotors, the Honda brand brake pads are the worst. Switching to ALL Akebono brake pads or a Semi metallic low resin brake pad will work as well
Great video - thanks! Can you please explain the injector issue a little more? I'm picking up a used 2017 with 118K KM in a few days. I do my own work. This is my first direct-inject vehicle. Do I need to replace the injectors? Have the valves cleaned? Thanks in advance if you see this.
Honda claims the injector issue is a manufacturing defect which I find suspicious but we have seen only a handful come back post injector replacement for another set. Luckily there is a service bulletin for now that wouldn’t cost you any money. Best of luck
I’ve experienced all these issues and the trans-jitter has gotten worse so taking it to the dealership. Unfortunately, although I have 7 years with the car, it just went over the 80k mileage count.
The most common issue is the 65miles transmission system pop up and the car drives normal. When you turn off car it goes away. Dealerships ripped people off telling customers they need a new transmission only to have the same problem occur when they reach speeds of 65mh.
I would also add the AC blower motor and also HVAC Control Module. Both have gone out twice on my 2016 Honda Pilot. Also can verify, as I have gone through all 4 issues before on this car.
Thanks for taking the time to put a video like this together. I have a 2016 pilot with the 6 sp and 86k; I just recently noticed the shudder if I am cruising with light to no throttle, and then when I gently reengage the throttle the shudder happens. Since it's past the 80k am I out of luck to have the dealer do anything? Also, if I change the trans fluid every 15k do you think the trans will last?
Hey, so even tho your above the 80k it won’t hurt to see if they will still cover it. I’d not do a 3x trans flush and then every 15k do a transmission service going forward. The trans should be ok but obviously there’s no guarantee in that.
@Hondamobilemechanic thanks for the advice. After watching your other pilot videos, I believe I miss spoke in regards to the Judder. If cruising at almost any mph, it feels like the torque converter lags to fully re-engage when letting off on the gas pedal for a few seconds, and the n reapplying throttle input. Any ideas? Some in the forums blamed poor converter lock up on the vcm.
@@RyanKrantz could be, would have to see some data before I could give a reasonable diagnosis unfortunately. Definitely something you want to have your local dealer look up.
@@BCautosolutions the injectors were early on so they covered it. When I asked about the transmission stutter and the key fob they said they would check it and they said nothing was wrong with transmission so I just flushed it and it went away. But now it seems I have to change transmission fluid regularly to stop the stutter. Key start was pretty much told the same as the light went away. But both mine and my neighbors suv both do the same thing with push start button. I will send it in now to get the push button fixed.
@@seekwrage yes, there’s definitely a warranty extension for it, just tell them to replace it smh, idk why they are so against doing it, easy 10 minute job everyone wins. Best of luck with it.
I enjoyed the video. I just bought a 2017 EX-L AWD 6spd and I noticed the tachometer fluctuating. The vehicle has 74,000 miles and I did get an extended warranty from the dealer. Should I request a trans fluid change? Or just mention the issue and see what they will do. Thanks in advance for any help. -Jake
Mention the issue. Tell them you know it’s a “thing” with these cars. I have a few videos on this matter. Tell them to check for pcm updates and perform if needed as well as the 3x trans drain/fill.
I just bought a 2016 Honda Pilot ex with 126k miles on it and the used car dealer was telling me to get a extended warranty and make sure it includes electrical systems and the way he said it now has me worried. They only gave me a 30 day warranty on the motor and only half on parts and labor and I have to use them for the repair. I have the car fax report and the vehicle was just service and inspection in February. It doesn't say what was serviced so I guess I should take it to my guy and have him check the transmission fluid and the whole vehicle 😢
Yeah the electrical stuff is pretty solid on those years. I’d be more worried about the trans juddering then anything. Definitely check that and change it asap!
I am now having issues with starting. I went out one morning and went to start it and it sounded like the battery was going dead. The alarm wouldn't set and it had the clicking noise and then dead. I had it jumped and drove it for a little while and went to reverse and I had the steering wheel turned as I was backing up and it bucked and made a strange sound had no power and I straightened the wheel and power was back and parked it got out and didn't touch it for 3 days. Went out on a warm dry day and it started right up and had no issues. Then next day I went to start it and it did a slow crank and started. I am so mad have car 2 months now and issues starting.
@@dreamtoreality9892 sorry to hear, sounds like you might be having battery and/or charging issues. Need to have to checked out before it leaves your stranded.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights. I am looking to purchase as used (new to me) Pilot and have been reading mixed messages about the transmission. Some say get the 6speed some say get the 9speed. Which one would you recommend? I know the the only comes in the Touring and up models and the 6speed on the EX-L and below trims. Looking at 2017 and up model years possibly till 2019 only - or as budget permits. Thanks!
Hey thanks for watching. So people saying don’t get the 9 speed don’t have any idea what they or saying or experience. We have had nearly zero issues with the 9 speed. The 6 speed is problematic but if you stay on top of the transmission services (I highly recommend every 15k a drain and fill) then it can get a way less problematic trans as well just like the 9 speed. Buying a used one can be risky because chances are proper maintence wasn’t done on the 6 speed and could be too little too late, for that reason I say go with the 9 speed if the budget allows to get, which like you said comes on a higher trim pilot.
@@BCautosolutions Thank you so much for replying back to me. I really appreciate your time and effort. And thank you for the advice as well on which transmission to get. As mentioned, I am getting mixed reviews on both transmissions, both have been said to be problematic with the shudders and rough shifts and loss of power. But now I am confident in getting the 9Spd over the 6Spd thanks to you. I’m also a subscriber to your channel now as well. Looking forward to learning more about Hondas. Cheers!
I apologize for butting in but I wouldn’t recommend a Honda Pilot. I have a 2017 and it’s not a good car. I bought is used with very low mileage but it’s already becoming an issue. This is my 2nd Honda and both have had issues within 3 to 5 years of manufacturing. If I could go back in time I would get a Toyota. Toyota has never given me (my son or husband being the main mechanics for usual things) issues until they got beyond 10 years old or older. That’s as long as you do regular maintenance but that goes for most cars. I’ve just experienced that Honda isn’t as reliable as Toyota since I don’t have a lot of money to spend of mechanics that do things that my son or husband couldn’t do for whatever reasons. Wish you the best!
@@susana5052 thanks for your input, I can assure you Toyota has their own share of issues… I’m actually getting closer and closer to making a video about all the issues they are having. Our sister Toyota store is literally across the street.
Just checking things out as I am also planning on getting into a used (new 4 me) 2018 touring, and I need some assurance that it is a good decision. I am curious, though, just to make sure the 9spd is NOT CVT, correct? And how often would you recommend servicing on the 9 spd?
Looking at buying a used 2017 Touring. Is there a new revision on the fuel injectors that fixes the issue or would I constantly have to replace them every x miles?
I am driving a 2018 Pilot EX, I encountered the fuel injector issue and transmission issue. Fuel injectors and torque converters were replaced under the extended warranty.
We have a 2017 pilot ex-l….. just had to get the fuel injectors replaced and previously had the push button start replaced. Ours has about 55k miles on it. My question is should we look to trade it in soon when our extended warranty runs out or keep it? We have not been regularly changing transmission fluid (have appointment to do that for the first time next week). I don’t want to have to get a new transmission right after the warranty runs out. Thanks for input!!
So at 55k if you start with the aggressive transmission services you should still be ok. With interest rates through the roof and climbing I think holding onto it and meticulous maintenance going forward would be my personal game plan.
Awesome video! My wife 2016 pilot 6spd trans just started that issue a few months ago. Goin to have the fluid changed and see what happens. Question….is it because the fluid breaks down that causes the problems? Thank you and keep the videos coming!
@@BCautosolutions Thanks again HMM... I just took the car on its first long trip and at random times, primarily while trying to pass a car on the Interstate, whenever i would try to accelerate to pass a car , it would make a hissing sound by the steering wheel, the speed would drop to about 40-45 MPH and the gas pedal would go limp. I would press on the gas but it would not accelerate, i would need to pull back to the right lane behind the car i was trying to pass and eventually the gas peddal would work and the car would accelerate. This happened randomly, even once when i was just cruising and there were no car infront of me. There where few times when i had cars right on my tail and the car would drop from about 70MPH to 45MPHs.. it really freaked me out and my wife is a little freaked out about driving the car, especially with the kids on the car. I have not seen that mentioned anywhere. Any thoughts on what it could be? Also, this happened with ECON on and off, LKAS off and Lane Departure both On and Off. Thanks in advance for any input.

The ignition button also junk, but I took it off and processed WD40 and the problem was solved. The front brakes are the same as in the video, if they are warmed up and you drove into a deep puddle, you will have to go to grind them. This is the problem I have now: at the intersections when the engine stalls, it will no longer start, so I have to turn off the car and turn it on again. Maybe someone knows how to solve this problem.

Thanks for the pointers, will take a look at the fuel injectors first before messing with the catalytic converters. ;)

2016 Pilot Touring AWD, 120K miles
Currently, dealing with the service bulletin issue that causes multiple codes to flash at once, and requires fuel injector replacement. My local dealer advised me this would be warranted at no cost to me....however, the parts are on backorder.
I can’t help but wonder if I told them I wanted to replace the fuel injectors just for better performance, and am paying out of pocket, that the parts mysteriously would be in stock. 🤔
i’m going to reach out to some out-of-town dealers to see if I can get some help on the issue.

Any ideas?

@@Foltynsplay could have been clogged but not common. Hopefully they did the right thing here . Thanks for sharing.
Is the 2016 9 speed any good ?
Yes. Much better then the 6 speed made by Honda.
Thankyou I bought on with 9 speed yesterday
@@djgblaze1of1awesome, congrats

QUESTION : So the other day my honda accord would make a clicking noise(or should I say it sounded like it was struggling to start) when I would turn the key to start the car🥴🥴. AAA came out and hooked up their tester and found "nothing wrong"...he even took the battery out to "reset" it.. car started after that(this was monday)..fast forward to TODAY and same noise happening again, only this time it hasn't not came on,just keep hearing a clicking noise(I suspect it was the starter but he saysss nothing is wrong lol),should I be concerned?
For sure. Sounds like a starter to me. I would take it to an actual mechanic and leave triple a to towing cars lol
@@BCautosolutions LOL just now seeing your comment! Yeah I took it to two AAA approved shops close to my house and both said it could possibly be that or something "deeper"🤨🤨...I just feel like my baby hasn't been picking up fast like she used too
Radio is a big issue.
How so?
Hello I am a Uber driver. I’ve had this car since 2016 the new I hold 202,000miles. Please take it from a person with experience not a mechanic every problem he has said I have had the fuel injector problems first came to me when I had 30,000 miles on the dealership and the corporation did not want to take responsibility. Oh my God screwed $2000 to fix something that’s not my fault, second of all the transmission the same thing he said happened to me I have never seen a transmission like this car. I have to change the oil every oil change roughly between 5 to 7000 miles ridiculous I’ve had the same problem with the pushbutton start. Thank God I fixed it myself. The store has been nothing but a big royal pain in the ass. I wish I never purchased it. I also was the person that told me the store is on the lowest part of hell
So first off I want to apologize for their incompetence. The injectors have a warranty extension and if you have paper work stating you paid it I would 💯 try and get reimbursed. The start/stop switch also has a warranty extension, although that’s a fairly cheap repair and not as critical to peruse imo. The biggest deal is the trans! Yes with Uber/Lyft we have to change the fluid at a very ridiculous and unreasonable rate as you have stated. Best of luck going forward 👍🏻
I have the receipt for fixing the fuel injectors I fixed them the second year I got this car which was a 2017 which I took her to the Honda dealership and they replaced it where do you want me to upload or email you the receipt from Honda I have it
@@ziad9649 yes that’s about when we started changing them. I would just contact corporate American Honda and see what they can say. I can’t get involved in that. I’m not sure what they will do, it’s worth a shot tho for sure. Good luck with it 👍🏻
Good video except you Spears so fast.
I speak fast? Yeah I’ve been told that lol. Thanks for watching, there’s always room for improvement. I appreciate the constructive criticism. 👍🏻
go to settings, search playback speed, dial it down to 0.5
why Honda always has trashy transmissions, and i mean since the mid 2000s, Honda used to neck and neck with Toyota in terms of quality.
They have come a long way since 06-08. Really the only problematic ones are the 6at and some cvts. No where as bad as early 90s - mid 00s. Back then we were doing 3-4 trans a day! Now we do maybe 5 a month. Huge difference and improvement.
@@BCautosolutions im considering buying an SUV either Honda pilot or Acura MDX, just doing little research, i wish u would do video about "the best reliable Model years to buy " for either Honda pilot or Acura MDX , that would be an awesome video series.
@@Omar-on804 ok yeah, i can do something like that.
front caliper slides suck.
@@johnanderson8705 yup
Basically, I'm never buying Honda again. Honda use to be dependable. What's the point if a honda isn't dependable anymore - other options out there.
And all those other options have issues as well 🤷🏼♂️
