I the mid 1980s with an increase in traffic,,,CR went scrounging into the dead lines and pulled out some old GP30s,GP35s and U23Bs. I saw several and was quite surprised. Those 6600 series,ex-EL SD45s were by this time rebuilt with a 16cyl prime mover, having replaced the troublesome 20 cyl. I remember in the late 80s we went to where they kept the 6600s for assignment, there were about 8-10 of them sitting there.
I liked CONRAIL motors back then. They were all blue with no variation from GP30's to SD50's. Late 90's you'd have 3 or 4 variation from conrail quality to white stripes, etc. Made it seem management couldn't make decisions. Eventually they had to split before everybody's son who became in charge ran it into the ground.
@cvgeeps Mostly whether it'll need more dynamic braking power. If it'll need more dynamic braking down the mountain, it'll be on the head end. If they need help shoving up-grade, they'll be on the rear.
