@@Mr.Jasaw13 You're doing exactly what he talks about. The story you're telling yourself is a sad, and masochistic story. Our universe says *so* much more to us that we haven't even begun to see the tip of the iceberg beyond the horizon. Times infinity. I thought my life was and has been a tragedy of long, horrible, sad, and extremely depressing times, that I have tried suicide plenty of times a few of them should have killed a herd of elephants, and fun stuff like that.. but I have also experienced very short, few, and relatively far between glimpses of Love and true happiness, and more. Those things are definitely meaningful (to me, obviously, but that's all it takes) - so striving for "all conscious beings being in their most wonderful (beyond real words like that) state" is a very meaningful goal. We may or may not get to experience it, but the possibility itself has meaning. If you've never felt anything like that, I feel extreme remorse for you.

I'm 42 and, until about a year ago, have been depressed and anxious since at least 15. The first step is coming to believe that you have some control over how you feel. The second step is starting the work of changing your inner dialogue. The idea of working on something can be extremely overwhelming if you are depressed, but start with really small changes that don't require much effort. Find a good therapist (not just the first one you come across) that does some sort of CBT, MBSr, etc. Gentle external accountability and emotional support will help you stay on track. Just don't get frustrated and give up! If you get frustrated, it's because you are expecting too much from from yourself and not being grateful/happy about the subtle progress you've made. At some point the more postive inner dialogue becomes a habit and you don't have to work on it much. It's like a shepard watching his flock for wolves. She only has to keep one eye on them.
Accept anxiety, don’t try to make it go away. Feel the fear and do exactly what you would do without it. Learn to make it not matter. That’s what I’ve found.
Why are you taking about anxiety? You’re expressing that statement as if you’re having a one on one conversation with someone who has anxiety. Some people, myself included, never experience any anxiety let alone fear
"Learn to make it not matter". Indeed, that's all there's to it! But it may also be thought of: "Easier said than done" - Yet, it's about the only way to go about it!
Who would have thought that anxiety and excitement are the same physical feeling with a different framing, the narrative we are telling ourselves. That in itself is the game changer. I am so glad I re-discovered Sam Harris today. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video.
"Rediscovered" Yeah, That's the word I would use too. The first time was when i was a hardcore militant atheist, lol and now life events brought me back to him which is very nice.
It’s amazing how well Sam Harris puts into words what I often think. His words are so illuminating and potent that it really changes my thinking every time I listen to him.
@@Mr.Jasaw13 Well, I think the definition of spirituality is quite broad. I do not necessarily connect it to a religion or to spirits. I think many people would agree that meditation for instance, is a spiritual practice. In that sense, an atheist can be both an atheist and spiritual right?
My mother taught me Meditation when I was a child. I forgot about it for almost twenty years. Today I am 34 years old and relearning this Mindfulness. I am Lucky she is still alive. The older I get, The more I appreciate what my parents taught me. I am Taking videos of her so I can remember her in 50 years when I am old & she'll be dead
I instinctively observed everything and everyone my entire life. My parents left me alone with my thoughts and defended me at school when teachers complained about my learning ”disabilities”. I am autistic but 40 years ago, never understood. Perhaps my parents never really knew how to care for me in this undiagnosed sense, but thank the gods. This allowed my mind to reveal itself from within instead of competing constantly at school, which is what all schools are and do, I developed inner senses that are like meditation and third eye vision. I now teach this. Everyone can learn it. My *only* fear in life is for the child that grows up hardened to only know the outside. All children are naturally tuned inwards. It is the conditioned man that tries to condition a child.
I have heavy anxiety today and this guided meditation made me cry. I don't even know why or what happened, but apparently I really needed this. Thanks, Sam. ❤
Sam Harris and Jourdan Peterson have had a profound effect on my life. Its hard to define or explain, nor can I place some material value to it. Simply some of the most important substance in my mind.
He's absolutely right. I'm stranded in the uk awaiting for some decision about my visa, working long hours, nearly three years without seeing my family and I still wake up being grateful and thankful every morning because life is a gift and no pebble on my way will deflect my thoughts from the blessings I being given. My main remedy is smile to life, pray and eat as healthy as I can. People are deceived by social media and all this unfair comparisons but more than anything people don't try to see any silver line of being here.
I think you missed the point completely here perhaps you could consider that maybe spending some time with the people you love most may improve your life and theirs and living in the moments with them instead of working long hours for what? Sam is also an atheist.
I would only add that maybe you should do less "praying" and more "thinking". Praying is irrational thought. Just framing it differently. Critical thinking and rational thought gets you closer to being mindful of what's around you. As opposed to hoping that an imaginary force or figure will work your life out for you.
@@rileydavidjesus I think OP is in UK waiting for a decision on his visa (possibly an extension).... He has been working there a few years already while his family are back in his home country. - that is my comprehension.
I am happy to see that Sam Harris read about our Upanishads (written in 800 BCE) of Indian Philosophy where it was written, discussed and prescribed "CONTROL OF THOUGHTS IS LIBERATION" and later Gautama, the Buddha taught people how to achieve Equanimity of Mind. Kudos to Sam for preaching the advice of age old ancient Indian sages.
It took me 15 years of mindfulness to become happy. The one single idea the set me going was that your feelings are based on thoughts, so if you can change your thoughts, you can change your feelings. Everything that Sam says here it perfectly aligned with the conclusions I have myself come to the past 20 years or so, and that I try to pass on to others.
Well, for me it took me like 15 weeks to feel more noticeable changes in mi daily life and be happier. I've been able to do things like I've never done before, like be completely calm when I'm stuck in heavy traffic and learning to actually be present in those moments. If really gives life a different perspective.
My experience has been different (not to say better). Practising meditation (a form of Vapasanna the same as Sam) has shown that I in fact cannot change my thoughts contrary to as you describe, they manifest much the same way as dreams, I don't manufacture them, they come of their own accord into my conscious stream. thoughts are purely transient, impermanent, they come to be and then pass, over and over, and meditation gets you to the a position of mind where you can remain detached from those thoughts, you can just observe them and then return to the object of meditation (the breath when starting out). This then gets you to the point that you can just be. You don't need to be thinking positive or not having any negative thoughts, as your thoughts have no influence or power over your emotions (should you choose that way in any given moment). "With strong mindfulness we can experience a deep sense in which self-loathing and romantic thoughts are the same: like all other thoughts, these are passing moments of mind.." - The Science of Meditation.
Schools spent hundreds of hours teaching me grammar I already knew and formulas I will never use. If some of that time was spent teaching me how to be in better control of my life, if I hadn't wasted so much time doing things wrong, I can only imagine where I'd be.
I can attest to the fact that mindfulness helps with public speaking anxiety. Though i didn't even medidate. You just need to learn to kind of acknowledge your anxiety without trying to make it go away or wanting to flee from it and without considering it as a bad or shameful thing, because the want to flee from it is what then makes it worse and uncontrollable instead of when you simply accept it.
I use to think the ' internet' was useless for me mentally.....after watching and LISTENING to this I think otherwise. Glad I discovered Mr. Sam Harris!😀
Clash Gamer Considering--according to Sam Harris free will is an illusion! Perhaps it’s a collective energy affecting the masses creating a shift in consciousness of a better way to be?
The best advice I ever received regarding this topic was as a teen: Whenever people ask "how are you?" the common response typically received is in the negative or otherwise dismal ("oh, you know, not so good" , "could be better", "same as always", etc...), by consciously answering in a positive way ("I'm doing great!" -whether you truly feel it or not), it triggers the mind take a new view of your situation and eventually alters your self confidence and world view, as well as others' opinion of you.
Good grief. SH is regurgitating non original and not very insightful information that’s been around and written about for ages. Not very esoteric. Millions of people worldwide say the same things every day.
We can all choose to be more mindful of our experiences and thoughts. If we choose to be more mindful in our lives. Life quality will shoot up 🙏 Much Love💯
Jonathan Lee Christopher Hitchens is a close second because he had such wit, but I really like Harris. I would even say he’s taught me life lessons that have helped me be a more conscientious Christian.

I became responsible for children when I too was still a child. That experience defined me and destroyed me. I didn't know how to take care of me while being responsible for two other lives with no adult experience. I guess that is why I have been wrought with anxiety and anger most of my life. I wasted my life before I ever had my own. I hope this helps some young person to think about their own life altering choices that can destroy your entire life. It is hard when you are young and people are out to take advantage. Be careful...most people are not good.
I appreciate your words of encouragement and wisdom. In a sense, your story sounds like one of those situations where others should consider and be grateful for their opportunities and/or circumstance. I hope this does not come across as insensitive to what you went through, but is it possible that these mindfulness techniques and skills may even be applied to your own life? I do not think you are "destroyed" (as you have put it), for example!
@@christianmiranda7 it sounded good until he talked about clinical depression from which I suffer from. No hope for us. Thank you for your kind reply in any case.
@@leeannoleary1881 Of course, thank you, as well. It is a horrible disease that is suffered from it. I still can't help in wishing you the best, though. Thank you for being here and sharing what you did all those months ago. EDIT: I also remember when he started talking about clinical depression in the video and remember it feeling a bit careless lumping it in as he did with the rest of his thoughts. I'm sure, at least, he meant well like a lot of people do when trying to talk about mental illness.
Be mindful and become AWARE of the stories that you are telling yourself, be AWARE of your thoughts and feelings, discover your limiting beliefs, discover what your beliefs are and know that you are capable to let go of what's holding you back, just know that not everything that you see needs a LABEL, we can just become the OBSERVER and find acceptance, be present and live every experience in slow motion. We are capable of controlling our thoughts, choosing our thoughts and change our mindset... to be able to change our life.
What is it exactly you're trying to achieve? Awareness is effortless - you surely don't have to _try_ to be aware? I'm wondering if there's merely some confusion here.
You call it 'bashing', I call it 'dismantling'. It is something that needs dismantling as there is no other facet of human life where having 'faith', the willingness to believe something without any evidence whatsoever, is seen as a good thing. And it is this faith and dogma which holds the human race back. Back to a time where only 'faith' had answers that have long been shown to be phantasmagorical.
Thoughts are always there. This man, like I do, recognizes them in the moment. They always seemed important to me. I try to 'direct' them, but neuroscience seems to show there are fractions of a second before any awareness that decisions are made. Still I seem to have to try.
Sam doesn't claim to be mindful of every thought or sensation he has. Nor does he deny the importance of being lost in thought for the purposes of achieving demanding cognitive tasks. Also, mindfulness is not about learning to direct your thoughts or emotions.
Most of us feel anxiety or worry because of a combination of experience and how we are wired not because you tell yourself to feel that way and can talk or think yourself out of it. I do agree with the last thing he said though around error correction as that is important and does work.
I truly believe that we as humans all give ourselves the answers in our subconscious mind, but unless our thoughts are verified it becomes just a thought. Sams way of putting his thoughts into words that people can understand is something I admire so much. Thank you 🙏
This all resonates with what the essence of the state of enlightenment is... Taught for centuries by spiritual masters but unfortunately manipulated by those who wanted to establish a source outside yourself as the answer, hence creating dependency on a higher authority that requires worship, following, obedience, etc, etc. The treasure is within, it has always been, devoid of the past and speculation about the future. Without labels, judgments, projections or beliefs but direct experience with reality itself.
I achieve my goals by doing the ridiculous, but just dropping what I am doing and doing my goals, and not carrying about the anxiety of people thinking it's crazy that I do that. I had an x who had an amazing body because he did what I do now. I will be talking to people and just busy out and do squats and crunches. My body looks so much better now. 😊

I think what Sam is saying is... “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be apparent to all. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. ” (Philippians 4:6-9.) "Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful." (Col 3:9-15). And so many other admonishments just like these! ;)
No need to think better thoughts, positive thoughts to psych yourself up. Instead of being identified with thoughts (immersed in thought) be a watcher of thoughts; that's your true self. In a level of watcher there are no problems; thoughts create problems. Even if you try to create better thoughts like "at least I don't have a cancer", you're still operating on a level of thoughts and in a mercy of ever changing thoughts. You are not your thoughts, thoughts happen in you. You are bigger than your thoughts, you are the space where thoughts come and go. Be a watcher of thoughts, like clouds drifting by.
@@sjuuilson You're right, "watcher" was probably not so good word to use. So, no thinking of watching or observing. Thoughts happen by themself and You just let them come and go.
Exactly on the head, excitement is much easier to deal with, and a far more positive emotion, actually easy to trade with anxiety for excitement internally, give it a go.
I guess I could join the Sangha at last. I know what to do at 66. It becomes a matter of actualization for me. The intent, will, stamina, clarity and serenity will all be needed for me to improve my mental state and evolve.
Fear is fear weather the stimulus is a lion or another person. I believe, people who struggle with other people (who are nasty/unreasonable) stay silent. The Cure to that is you you don't always have to be nice, sometimes and really all the time, you need to look after yourself. If you can be nice to do that great! Go for it but if nice is not working switch gears. If there is a word I'd recommend you it's be assertive when necessary and that'll solve that "person" problem.
It's great to hear someone like Sam Harris speak common sense like this, because, although most of this SHOULD be common sense to most people, it may, perhaps, come with not enough confidence, or strength of conviction. Hearing someone SPEAK it, as clearly as Sam does, fortifies this conviction- at least, I can say for myself that it does.

Yes, wouldn't it be wonderful, to just chat with anyone at anytime. It's so sad that we are conditioned to be suspicious and afraid to chat kindly with "strangers". No lonely people, if it was normal to approach anyone, and have a chat.
At what point in our thousands of years of evolution did job interviews, public speaking, careers become considered normal? We feel anxious and depressed cz this life is all someone else’s idea and the above tasks are imposed upon us through indoctrination without our consent. I feel pain when i hit my thumb with a hammer so i avoid it. My brain is brain is telling me to stop it. Regular and constant anxiety and depression is not normal, our brains are reacting to an unacceptable situation.
At what point then did driving a car, flying on airplanes, taking boat rides, climbing up tall ladders, using computers, watching tv or cinema become normal? This is not a case of normal vs not normal or what humanity used to do some eons ago. There are people who like public speaking and they do it and theres people who dont like it (fear, anxiety etc) and they still do it. The people who dont like it, by doing it, they are facing their fears which slowly mitigates their fear response from their bodies. We all have fears and different scenarios that scare us and not seem that normal to us. And just for the record youre right about life being more complex now compared to what it used ti be but if you do not adapt (adapt in this case means developing crucial skills that better mitigate and regulate emotional pain in your life) then you will perish (with perish i mean having a very hard emotional experience-life).
JoeySkate24 some great points there for sure. However, I think if we keep living this way of indoctrination, consumerism, led by the nose etc we will perish. We are conditioned to consume before we are even old enough to comprehend it. Adapting doesn’t only have to mean fitting in with the main stream.
@@paddyfriend3999 yes i agree with that 100%. Its true that the life now is more friendly towards people with money rather than providing a fullfilling life.
What makes you so certain people hundreds of years ago didn't have anxiety and depression? They wouldn't have had words for them. Lives were a lot more simple, short and filled with much more material suffering (sickness, injury, death, etc.). Also, at some point people didn't know how to write. We'd all be pretty smart compared to people throughout evolution so, who is to say that we are not just evolving through an awkward stage? Maybe the way through it is simply through mindfulness.
"not clinical depression but feeling like life sucks and you're a failure" well gee there's a definition of clinical depression if I ever heard one. Life sucks and I'm a failure and I believe this and feel this in my bones and I'm not clinically depressed at all, said no one.
Yes clinical depression sucks!!! Which colors ones world in the darkest sense possible! And it’s very difficult to eradicate! Sam also believes free will is an illusion --does that mean the choice to implement such wisdom isn’t a choice its happenstance! Destiny perhaps! What to do if you aren’t able to change? It seems collectively many are awakening to a more joyful way of being through adopting a healthier diet, meditating etc! Some are unable to see the wisdom of, some agree but are unable to make the changes through no fault of their own? Interesting. What if the world view is shifting and it’s like dominos falling? The less depressed individuals become that collective positive energy affects everyone!? I’ve been seriously clinically depressed! I still battle the tendency, but I’m not now! The first step is accepting what is......with a tiny glimmer of hope the situation will improve! It can and it will.
Zyan Z problem is Free will is what every human possesses as a human. There is no such thing as installed free will Your personal thoughts are your free will. Unfortunately it’s been deluded by an unknown power that floats around? Like the rest of the religions. Religion was a guideline and a judicial system for kings to rule Also a self made thought to rule, Bettered the odds of survival. But that is the dark ages I think humans can grow up and put pretend happiness aside and start believing in yourself as a human
He never says to control your thoughts, as if that could even be possible. The trick isn't controlling thoughts, it's noticing them as mere thoughts, as appearances in consciousness, and not becoming lost in them. And further recognizing that there's not even a thinker, or a self, there's only awareness. That's liberation.
Sam Harris didn’t come up with these concepts (and I’m sure he never claimed to). One can learn these practices with a therapist who practices cognitive behavior and/ or acceptance-commitment therapy, and also from any respected teachers of mindfulness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Tara Brach, Pema Chodron, to name a few. Best wishes on your journey! ~Michele
Ultimately, you can lie to yourself and convince yourself it's not a lie. Then, you've set yourself free. Never to be found again as the same soul. There is another way; to retain yourself as much as possible. Give yourself to another; and admit your life is out of your hands. Don't confuse sanity and consciousness with joy and happiness. Most importantly, you don't always have to focus on the truth; but for the love of love (and not the love of life), don't forget it. This is the rare case where the less you have to lose, the more you have to win.

What is contradictory about a spiritual atheist?
@@joshboston2323 what does that even mean ? let's first see if you understand ...
@@Mr.Jasaw13 Well, I think the definition of spirituality is quite broad. I do not necessarily connect it to a religion or to spirits. I think many people would agree that meditation for instance, is a spiritual practice. In that sense, an atheist can be both an atheist and spiritual right?
It's not contradictory at all. You should read Sam's book Waking Up if you think otherwise.

Robert Rathswohl. He got a heart from M.
Where you going?
On the same path. Hope it doesn't take me so long though
@@pozzarefds yes, detaching yourselves from thoughts means that the feelings they create can also change, this is absolutely true.

Sam Harris is my Idol. So grateful for his insights!!!!!

Sam Harris’s influence on my life has been incredibly meaningful. What a great human being..

I needed this. Sam is great when he’s not constantly bashing faith.
He's great then, also.
@@Kixtia013 Agreed
@@beees3499 I completely agree with you. Religion is the root cause of so much death and destruction.
Exactly! You, Sam, should adopt that principle yourself.
Low key, down to earth presentation going straight to the point packed full of wonderfully helpful advice. Thanks Sam.
Most of us feel anxiety or worry because of a combination of experience and how we are wired not because you tell yourself to feel that way and can talk or think yourself out of it. I do agree with the last thing he said though around error correction as that is important and does work.
We think ourselves into it unconsciously. To consciously think your way out of anxiety takes practice and self control.

” (Philippians 4:6-9.)
"Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
But if you are thinking of watching thoughts and observing them you are STILL operating on a level of thoughts.
@@sjuuilson You're right, "watcher" was probably not so good word to use.
So, no thinking of watching or observing. Thoughts happen by themself and You just let them come and go.

That’s brilliant. Think of the negative that didn’t happen

So true though
It’s a vicious cycle
Just like anything
Having that thought and feeling consistently for a prolonged period is the extra requirement.
Zyan Z problem is
Free will is what every human possesses as a human. There is no such thing as installed free will
Your personal thoughts are your free will.
Unfortunately it’s been deluded by an unknown power that floats around?
Like the rest of the religions.
Religion was a guideline and a judicial system for kings to rule
Also a self made thought to rule, Bettered the odds of survival.
But that is the dark ages
I think humans can grow up and put pretend happiness aside and start believing in yourself as a human
