    • @johntalak5453
      @johntalak5453 5 лет назад +36

      @David Kopp It was neither implicit nor explicit in the comment that it was a race thing. It was just dealing with the common liberal working knowledge that says that the followers of Dr Peterson are (i) dispossessed, (ii) male and (iii)caucasians of European decent. Any easy ref will be Cathy Newman in the channel 4 interview and a myriad of nay sayers that are coming to mind as I write. Number 2, This is really noting and being grateful for the Guttenberg effect more than anything else. Just showing that this guys message has as big a rich as has the printed page. I am aware that you do know that, in so far as what education can do for a man the printed page has done so much that it is now easy to for any one to get into a western institution of higher education as it is the same "language". Algebra in the States is equivalent to algebra in Zimbabwe. But until now, support in so far as "shrink" advice is concerned was only limited to the western world. But thank God, we of Africa can now access such resources too in an inexpensive manner. Lastly, if you are social scientist worth your salt, it comes in handy sometimes, to divide humans by gender, race and social class as these parameters do affect outcome. It has already been demonstrated with Hypertension as an example. Black people of African decent are more salt sensitive than any other class of people. If you are a black man you might want to know that stat. It should never be viewed as a race bating tactic but rather as the effect of RUclips.

      Soon I'll be 47, so I'm probably more than halfway to my expiration date. I don't have too many regrets from my 20s, save one. I had a job at a decent company for 14.5 years. The company wasn't dishonest, but it was a bit soul sucking to work there. Finally, I decided to leave and go in a new direction. It wasn't easy to step into the unknown and it wasn't a perfect transition, but I'm so glad that I did, because now I'm in a field that is such a better fit. My only regret is that I didn't leave earlier.

      @mdt471 5 лет назад +14

      Don't most of us equate doing what we believe to be meaningful with happiness? There is little real-world distinction between the two. This is what peterson does. he restates obvious truths in far more words than are necessary.

    • @grantlewis9925
      @grantlewis9925 5 лет назад +106

      @@mdt471 Happiness can be very meaningless. Maybe you're happy when you're drinking or playing video games. On the other hand, something meaningful could be documenting/photographing the Sudanese genocide to spread awareness of atrocities. Or raging against the USSR despite the grave risk to your own well-being. That's not much fun and likely won't make you "happy", but it's incredibly meaningful. Even married life or raising children can be more meaningful than happy at times. Maybe if you're lucky you can find something that's both meaningful and consistently makes you happy, but that is most certainly a luxury. It's a modern delusion that the purpose of life is to experience happiness, thus the necessity of Peterson's dissent and the reason for your confusion.

    • @mdt471
      @mdt471 5 лет назад +11

      @@grantlewis9925 Perhaps the confusion to which you allude lies in your definition of the word 'happiness'. You chose to attribute to it, synonyms like glee, cheerfulness, merriment and joy. These are appropriate. But so are the ones I chose when writing my comment...contentment, satisfaction, exhilaration, fulfillment. When I volunteer at a nursing home for the terminally ill, I experience none of the feelings you use to define happiness, but I feel happy . Happiness is not a thing, it is entirely subjective. Some people are happy to bully or steal. Don't believe that you can wrap an assessment of life experience in a neat package. You are absolutely correct in what you believe, but only according to one perspective, yours.

    • @grantlewis9925
      @grantlewis9925 5 лет назад +25

      @@mdt471 therein lies our misunderstanding. Your use of the word "happiness" is overly-broad leading you to misinterpret Peterson. Peterson uses the word as it is intended to be used. 'Happy: feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.' It is emotional and often fleeting. Even a successful, content person leading a meaningful life will experience pain or anguish and that's fine. Happiness is not implicit in (nor synonymous with) meaning - the two simply coincide from time to time. Those glorious moments when they overlap is when the tragedy of existence justifies itself, according to Peterson. All this to say, please don't write-off his ideas simply because you define terms differently (and less coherently) than he does.

      The achievement of excellence in any field never comes from a blind leap of faith, or randomness in general. But rather, there are always a multitude of factors that bring the end result. What's absent? The hierarchies themselves or people willing to say "we need hierarchies of competence"?
      As an editorial:
      I think we sometimes dislike the competencies that are (and are not) favored by the hierarchies, so it can be harder to desire genuinely engaging in the hierarchies.

It strikes as being a stereotype that fat people are lazy and not disciplined. A person can have a vitamin deficiency and not know it. Not having a fundamental vitamin in their body causes them to eat, because they are searching for the absent vitamin. There is no balance in their body, so they overeat. I used to work as a programmer, hated every second of it. I was depressed. Over a year ago I started pursuing a life I wanted, I quit my job, the most scary choice I've ever made in my life. I went back to school, and now work day and night towards being able to live off the life of an illustrator. It is incredibly difficult, but I'm happier than I've ever been in my life. Recently a friend of mine showed me Jordan Peterson and his talks. He's saying everything my heart has been screaming all my adult life, and it is really helping me pushing even harder. Thank you man, you truly are doing something good in this world!

    “First of all, dispense with the idea that you get to have any permanent security.” Jordon Peterson.
    Truth is hard to hear. You know instantly that it is right and good and that there’s a clear path ahead, but at the same time, it’s terrifying.
    If we overcome the fear of letting truth challenge and change us and we grab hold of the excitement of our potential, we can literally “move mountains,” as the Bible says.
    How? By having enough faith in our God given power and in our dream and by being brave enough to move the first stone… then to move the next… and so on.
    Truth drives us to difficult decisions, to change our mindset, to spiritual growth, to dream big and to overcome great adversity en route to making our dreams come true.
    Carpi Diem! Accept the challenge while you’re young and have all that untapped energy!
    Don’t accept people telling you that you are too oppressed by some social construct to succeed. Those fearful angry people are history’s losers. They spend their short lives holding people back from achieving their dreams. Instead, use their bitter words as motivation to prove them wrong.
    Draw your sword and carve your path! In whatever you do, do your absolute best, not just what you can get by with. Be profitable to your employers, your teachers, your parents. Be a blessing to your coworkers, your fellow achievers, your family.
    Make your mark. Chisel your name on the halls of history.
    Let mistakes and failures be your school masters as they will come hard and fast. Their education is priceless.
    When you make mistakes or fail at something, remind yourself that we achieve in proportion to what we attempt. If you hadn’t soared so high, you might not have been burned, but you also wouldn’t have seen the heavens from your lofty point of view.
    Make the world a better place with what little time and resources you’ve been given and you’ll find that when you look back, you’ve lived a life well lived.
    It’s not easy putting others first. It goes against our nature. It requires giving up some of your comforts and putting in blood, sweat and tears.
    When I was a young man, I asked myself, “Am I living my life making the world a better place for others? Have I made a positive difference in people’s lives? When I die, how many people will be at my funeral and what will they think about how I lived my life?”
    Those questions in my youth led me to commit to the arduous task of becoming a doctor, striving to be the best father and loyal husband I could, to traveling and being a missionary, to developing as many skills as I could in order to use them in the service of others.
    Should my truth turn out to be literally and spiritually true, I hope one day to stand before my Father in Heaven and hear him say, “Well done, my faithful servant, we’ll done.”

      There's this other speech where he talks about how everyone is suffering, and how some of us atleast try to bear through the suffering. Jordan says to try and "transcend" your suffering. He then talks about how he knew a guy who worked on powerlines, he got in a motorcycle accident and it really wrecked the guy. What did he do? He would go out with his partner who had Parkinsons in the heavy snow and work on lines. 2 people for the job of one. They're doing it, bearing through it. Doing what they find meaningful.
      Jordan then says "And the lights are on.."

      @@bluzedogg I think many of us to discuss these ideas is a good place to start. Change from dominant ideas of today that are destroying our world can only come from from enough individuals changing their values and thoughts. The Age of Enlightenment that gave rise to the American Constitution took centuries to form and mature, and its following decline that we are seeing today took two hundred years. All through the power of many individual efforts accepting what they believe. We can change the world through the power of ideas. In the case of Jorden Peterson I would say his ideas can help us towards a New Age of Enlightenment. Each of us will have an individual responsibility to see this happen.

    I listen to you, Dr. Peterson, every chance I get for about 3 years now and I'm sure I have before stood up and gave you a standing ovation. It's a really nice, loud, strong clap as if I were dead in front of you . I respect the compassion you speak with probably more than the teaching itself. My dad,Jack Daniels, lol he's not the bottle; he is better. January, he turned 89, and it cripples my soul not having his amazingly wise mind eye to eye and with the same amount of compassion .Truly a very rare, like yourself, rock solid guy that balanced his life impeccably and effortlessly. He was my mom growing up, and I have zero complaints. I was terrible in school though. Smart but always skipping. Bored. Very outdated education was my attitude even my teacherswere all old and smelly , and the fact my dad NEVER shared with me the insane amount excellence he was recognized for in school ! Valedictorian, President debate lettered in basketball and baseball, most handsome, literally every single page of his annual his sister showed to me when I was 23. Immediately!! I wanted answers. I took summer school for God's sake! I slowly walked up to him, waiting for him to look up at me. Eye to eye is a big deal to him. I tapped him lightly on his chest and asked, "Why did you keep all that from me?" He looked up at me with oh so humble green eyes and said, "Because I wanted you to be yourself.....wow. life changing.
    Love is the best gift, but a beautiful mind is like priceless art. You have picked up right where he left off. It was my biggest fear, beginning years ago. Who would or could spoon feed me life lessons in the most beautiful and intriguing way to the point where you are ready to do that very thing and its part of your soul now .... I am overwhelmed right now with gratitude for you both being the most important thing in my life.
