- All Aboard as we take the Reading & Northern Fall Foliage Excursion to Jim Thorpe, Pa. Our mode of transportation will be what is known as a Budd RDC train, which stands for Rail Diesel Car. Joining me for this excursion is friend and fellow RUclipsr Jamie Makin. She originally told me about this trip and I didn't want to pass up the opportunity to ride in a rare piece of railroad equipment. Our journey starts off in Pottsville, Pa with the train departing at 8:30am. After making two additional stops, we finally arrive in Jim Thorpe to enjoy their Fall Festival. Along the way we get to experience some beautiful scenery, colors and plenty of horn action. This was such a fun, comfortable and enjoyable way to travel into town and not have to worry about traffic.

YES!!!!!
Thank you for the Jim Thorpe in Autumn idea 😊🙏🏼🍁🍂
Sure did !! Lots of fun !
Great JP!! Not really into railroads beyond them being generally cool, and I did not know those kind of diesel cars existed. Neat. And great scenery. It's so nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the fall colors and weather.
What a great excursion Jay. Great day trip, seems very enjoyable, senic. Thanks for bringing me along (Jamie too) 👍👊
Add this to your list. It was a relaxing and fun way to see the scenery. Well worth the money.
@@JPVideos81 all ready have 😉
@@frankforrest1597 😅
Glad you enjoyed the ride it was a pleasure having you on board. For anyone who is planing to ride along there are schedules for more rides on the outer station reading website. And another thing is these trains are no smoking and no alcohol trains for the safety of people and yourself. Hope to see all on the next trip on the Reading and Northern Railroad.
When?? im interested to go with my family!
That was a LOT of FUN!
Hope everyone waved to Alan 🖐️🙋
Beautiful fall colors but scary bridge 😳. You looking down made my stomach weak.
Thanks so much JP!
Omg the bridge! I about died. I read your comment before I had watched the whole video and I thought you were talking about the first bridge, which was pretty high. But no, oh no, that's not the one.
@@lie-berry bridges are beautiful but scary.
Yes enjoyed the ride... Awsom lovely scenery and that sound!! The height was a little scary going through the tunnel was funThe skeletons and all the info you know cool pics at the end thanks JP 👍😄
Awesome video of our awesome outing! I'm so glad you were able to join me on this excursion. It was such an enjoyable ride, and this is really the best way to get into Jim Thorpe during the crazy fall foliage season. Riding the RDC was such a unique experience, and I am with you in being impressed with just how smooth and comfortable that ~70 year-old set of rail cars was. Hope to share another of these rides with you someday! 425 for the fall foliage trip would be great to do too. Sign me up for the dome car!
Thanks for the invite. Always enjoy watching. Peace
Thank you JP! The foliage was beautiful!! When the train went slowly so that you could see all the trees from above, I started to cry because the view was so magnificent!
Glad you enjoyed the scenery and train ride.
Loved it! As usual, thank you for taking us along with you. Much appreciated! 🌝
Always a pleasure riding and filming trains
Oh wow, so cool! Looks like you two had such a great time! So enjoyable, and relaxing, and amazing scenery and the views are gorgeous! So beautiful! Love the horn and I would have been a little nervous on the high bridge too lol but it was incredible! What a great experience! Some day I would love to take that ride, thank you so much JP, very awesome video!
I hope you get to experience it.
That was a fun excursion, the ride really was smooth. I liked that the windows opened!! The colors were beautiful from the lookout bridge!! Thanks for the fun!! Can’t wait to see the next
It was really hot on the train, so the cool air felt great.
JP, really loved and enjoyed your awesome video! Looked like blue steam coming from the train before you got on the train. Absolutely beautiful scenery and thank you for taking me along with you to places I'll never get to see!
It definitely had a blue tint to it and had that familiar diesel aroma. Glad you hopped aboard and joined us.
I'm living in New York state now and happy here. But you passed my old home on Railroad St in Tamaqua twice! Thank you for that.
Awesome beautiful video JP! Trestles, Tunnel and beautiful scenery! Thanks for bringing us along! And thanks to Jamie for suggesting such a beautiful trip!
That was just awesome Jay! Wow! Amazing! Thank you for sharing! Loved it!
Excellent video JP, and thoes beautiful fall colored trees. Well that is the first time I ever heard of RDC, and in mint condition to.
They put lots of money into restoration. They are a great addition to R&N
They definitely look like there from the 1950s. Amazing to see them
That had to be a cool experience. The views where amazing. Have to add this to my bucket list.
It's worth every penny! I think you'd really enjoy it, and hopefully we'll ride it together someday.
If you liked the lehigh gorge ride we did, I know you'll love this.
WOW WHAT A BEAUTIFUL RIDE..THE BEST PART WAS WHEN YOU COULD LOOK OUT FROM THE TOP OF THE BRIDGE SO BEAUTIFUL.. THANKS FOR SHARING 💙💙💙
So high, but so beautiful
YES IT IS BEAUTIFUL ❤️💙
Great video JP I love the scenery and the train looks like it be wonderful Excursion train
Thanks for watching Pam

Thanks for the kind words
Your video are fun and informative! Thank you! Thumbs up! Trish
As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip with you. Your fall season is truly beautiful.
Thank you 😊
That was a fun ride with you. Loved the scenery! Best part ws the trestle bridge! MAN, what a view! It's my first time to see a Rail Diesel Car so that was amazing to learn first-hand. Happy upcoming Thanksgiving to you and the family.
💙😊
Oh my God I am so jealous!!!!! Wow...I would love to take this train ride....its on my multi sheet bucket list now...lol thanks for the video
Don't lose that list or you'll have to start all over.
@@JPVideos81 😆 🤣 😂 yep 55 years in the making...its many pages 😆 🤣 😂
Thank you for lovely train ride.
What a fun train ride and beautiful scenery. That was a surprise with Alan...
Great relaxing trip😊! Good way to start my day, coffee and a train ride👍🚂❤💙
💙😊
Awesome video I love the fall colors and that was awesome train ride
Great video and commentary JP, thank you for sharing. The RDC's were the upgrades of the famous "Doodlebugs" of the 20's, 30's and 40's on short lines and branch lines to carry small numbers of passengers to main stations where regular passenger service on the streamliners would then carry the load. The doodlebugs were gas engined and various railroads had classic designs for their doodlebugs. Many of them are located at railroad museums now. Great ride on the Reading and Northern, I remember when it was the Lehigh Valley RR and if you get the chance stay at the Jim Thorpe Inn, great food and wonderful balcony seating in the evening.
I have stayed at the Inn at Jim Thorpe. Wonderful place.
This was a great vid Jay, I chased 425 from Hamburg to Jim thorpe this same day. 425 really gave a great show. I got ya pulling out of JT except I was on the other side of the train. I think we all had a good day.
Can't go wrong filming R&N equipment. There was tons of people waiting to see 425 return. Hoping to ride behind her next fall excursion.
@@JPVideos81 I don't think it's gonna be 425 doing them next year. Reading 2102 will be returning to service soon next year. So if ya want to ride next year's Fall Foiliage Excursion, Your gonna have a reading T1 hauling your train with no diesel assistance so get ready for that. Next year, The Reading Rides again!
@@IronhorseRailProductions that's good news. Whatever the motive power is, it will still be an enjoyable trip.
All Aboard Remember that from old movies Loved it Brian again this is superb n intriguing
One awesome fall video. I am going to do this next year. Thanks JP!!!!
My pleasure
What a awesome video, thanks for the ride Jason
My pleasure Russell
Great video! Love the old budd RDCs!
Hi Jay. That looked awesome. I miss being out in Vermont this time of year to see the fall foliage. Hope you are doing great.👍👍❤
The colors are just about peaking now, but was still a great scenic ride. Thanks for stopping by.
Amazing good time to go for traveling on A train ride Video✌💯
That was a lot of fun and once again I've learned something from a JPVideo .Never knew there were self propelled passenger cars..RDC..Very interesting to know .Really liked the music you chose . It was a pleasant ride with the scenery and beautiful fall foliage .The view from High Bridge was awesome . Seeing Alan and his insert was a lot of fun . So glad Jamie shared this info with you and you took us along ....I had a great time : }
I only recently learned about the RDC trains last year. They are a fun way to travel.
I always love watching your videos! Really makes me want to visit PA.
Glad you enjoy them
Been looking forward to this video! It was neat seeing that Iowa Pacific full length dome car. It was in regular Amtrak service on the Chicago to Indianapolis route just a few years back.
Great job, and enjoyed the music!
Neat info, glad you enjoyed the video.
The ride looks really cool. Never realized the seats flipped so you can always face forward. We always had them facing each other when we had a group of friends on the train. I always thought it was to accommodate different size groups..lol.
Several groups had them facing each other. Makes having conversations much easier.
That was flat out a super enjoyable video and experience.
Can't agree more
Great video that captured the essence of the trip. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
I recently moved just outside of Jim Thorpe and saw this train a couple days and thought to myself that looks alot like a subway. Appreciated the history on the train, kinda cool to see a train still in existence that was built in a place that I explored and filmed for my channel.
It's an oddball as far as trains go for this area, but it's one of the most comfortable and relaxing rides I've had on a train.
Have rode the RDC last year to Jim Thorpe in the fall and we ar going on them again in December to see Jim Thorpe at Christmas time. Love the ride in these cars.
Cool Train Ride
Some of Us are convinced will never travel the way We'd like because of age health or lack of funds .
So Thanks for allowing Us to tag along it was a very scenic Rail Road and the 170 yr old tunnel
and 160 ft high bridge was spectacular Id like to google
the location and directions to
the train station .
Safe Travels Be Blessed
It's my pleasure to share these trips. However big or small they are, I enjoy them.
Very cool! Reading & Northern has a great assortment of rolling stock. I've ridden behind 425 once but I definitely need to get out there and try some additional excursions.
No matter what the power, it's usually a great experience.
that old locomotive sure is impressive, love the sound its horn makes
Reminded me of a tug boat
That was cool..Jim Thorpe always seems like a nice place when you film there.
You'll enjoy the next video we we see lots more of the town. Beautiful this time of year.
Amazing, so fantastic!
Enjoyed the train ride, I didn't like looking down when the train slowed for the bridge but it was a lovely vista.
I was suprised how close to the edge it was. Wouldn't want to be trapped out there.
Some remnants of the old Pennsy line there in the beginning heading down to Port Clinton. I love the High Bridge, wanna fly my drone around it sometime. Look like you had a fun time.
I honestly never knew about the bridge until we crossed it. Gotta capture it with my drone too.
Thanks Jay,
Very beautiful, very interesting

Tons of fun!
Perfect ride. We plan on riding the RDCs February 18 for Winterfest. I also read somewhere the NYSW RDCs are there too. I wonder if they’re ready to roll too?
Enjoy your trip
Nice trip..didnt know they started a line back up in Pottsville. The siding at 4:58 is the Schuylkill valley line..it used to go to tamaqua and end right at the cabooses behind the train station, but it ends in middleport now. The siding at 17:23 & 32:52 is the lehigh & new england line and used to go through the Hauto/Lansford tunnel to the now RBMN line. The tunnel is sealed off ( kind of ). See you at the #9(btw...the tunnel is near #9)
Thanks for the info. See you there!
@@JPVideos81 😁👍
Look like it was a fun day.
Awesome video :)
That tunnel looked really narrow! Keep your arms inside the ride! 😁
😁
I had the pleasure of riding one in maine, a RDC-1 from Allearth rail, leased to Midcoast railservice maine. she's ex-cn and ex-tre so she still has the original K3L's.
I would love to see that bridge in person that's amazing
Definitely have to bring the drones for that.
Amazing video on RUclips 💯 ✌
Nicely done Jp
Thanks lesa
Like sightseeing on holidays X
😊
Beautiful scenery...and $49 for a nice day trip is not to expensive.
Not at all. Well worth it.
Taking another ride down memory lane while I work today. My work is awfully boring, this ride was much more fun lol.
😁
What. A. Fun. Ride. Like. To. Travel. Across. The. Country. In. One. Love. To. See. .the. united. States
fantastic JP will get back saving this Brian am tired 1.0am 7th Nov looks gt as i Love trains big time to cars Chow
Man this is America I love still not gone to bed
Is there bathrooms on the train and beautiful views... Love ya bro
Yep, I showed the bathroom door in the one clip. Very tiny though.
Loved all the screaming in the tunnels haha! Never heard of these types of trains before, I am so jealous! Such a memorable experience. Curious. ...do they slave the engines together, since each unit has its own power? These look really long, are they articulated? Thanks for taking us along!
It reminded me of the Knoebels train ride where everyone screams in the tunnel. Yes, they are slaved up and work together, regardless of which end the engineer is on. Not articulated, just have a long streamlined look.
I commuted by Train from Brunswick Maryland, then later I moved to Martinsburg West Virginia, and commuted to German Town Maryland from there. Budd Cars I think ran from Brunswick, and the commuter train (engine and passenger cars) ran from Martinsburg. But the ability to reverse the train for the trip home was so important, that for the Martinsburg Train, they bought a Japanese Manufactured Commuter Car that had controls at one end for the Engineer to operate the train from for the return trip in the evening with the engine still at the same end it was when it came into the train yard, no need to move the engine to the other end. I was told by the commuter train employees that there were additional costs to reversing the train and the Japanese car eliminated those.
I was on a Budd Car, moving down the tracks at normal speed, when the Engineer and Brakeman came running out of the control end and down the aisle between the seats. They soon returned and I asked what happened. I was told Turkeys were on the track, and if they take flight and are struck, they'll come back through the glass windows. They said a cow, or car, on the track isn't as much a concern, I assume they mean once slowing down and impacting at a lower speed, since they don't kick up to the window area.
I was also on the Budd Cars when they ran out of fuel, we came to a stop in the middle of nowhere. They got it running with no additional fuel. I'm not sure how, there were two units, I'm not sure if they transferred fuel or ran the other unit.
Great Video JP, caught the Behind the Scenes Halloween Video too, great stuff all.
Pretty neat info. Thanks for sharing
Can i get the link to book a trip
Just google reading and northern fall foliage. There are different options on their site.
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954
i believe they (The rdc's) are ex Reading
I think you're correct
"Amish rail fans!"😆😅 Ha!🤣
No one wearing a mask? What's up with that?
the BEST food ive ever had was served by the polish church ladies at the number nine wash house mine tour, some kind of noodle, cabbage and onion concoction with lots of butter. ive never forgotten the experience , this was back in 89. haluski? i forget the name. oh and the deep fried pierogis at the sunrise diner . 2 boxes and they didnt even last past the town limits.
