Al Jarreau - Spain (I Can Recall)

  • Al Jarreau's classic version of Chick Corea's already classic Spain.
Corea wrote it as an instrumental with an intro based on the second movement of Joaquín Rodrigo's guitar concerto Concierto de Aranjuez. Jarreau put lyrics to the whole tune.
Jarreau released it on the album This Time in 1980, and it's on virtually every one of his compilations.
Opinions vary on who plays on what song on the album (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Tim..., but Abraham Laboriel is listed as its sole bass player, and that's obviously Steve Gadd on the drums. And probably Larry Williams on keyboard.
Someone asked for possible tabs. Here's a few:
    www.ultimate-guitar.com/search...
    And here are the lyrics:
    Yesterday
    Just a photograph of yesterday
    And all its edges folded
And the corners faded sepia brown
And yet it's all I have of our past love
A post script to its ending
    Brighter days
I can see such brighter days
When every song we sang is sung again
    And now we know
We know this time it's for good
    And we're lovers once again
    And you're near me
I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown on the ground
In Spain I did love and adore you
The nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
And tomorrow will bring you near me
    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time they play that Spain again
I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown on the ground
Our love was a Spanish fiesta
The bright lights and sounds were our joy each day
And the nights were the heat of yearning
    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castanets
And forever we'll know their meaning
I can recall my desire every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    [music solo]
    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
    Your eyes meet mine
And they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castenets
And forever we'll know their meaning
    I can recall my desire
    Every reverie is on fire
And I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    Yes, today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    [scat solo]
    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
Your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
And we live again as if dreaming
The sound of our hearts beat like castanets
And forever we'll know their meaning
I can remember the rain in december
The leaves of brown tumbling down
In Spain I did love and adore you
The nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
And tomorrow will bring you near me
    I can recall my desire

RIP Chick Corea. Another great has left us. “It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.” Chick Corea 2021.

I was at Berklee in 1976 and saw Al Jarreau one night at Paul's Mall, a small nightclub in Boston. It was life changing. The first time I became aware of him I think. He had such a percussive way of singing and a really great band. The same band he used on the live album that came out in 77. Abe Laboriel, Tom Canning and Joe Carrero on drums. Such an amazing drummer. It's a great memory to this day.

My Dad did his practice teaching at Milwaukee Lincoln in the spring of 1957(? - or was it 58?). Al was his first favorite student. I think I met Al that spring - I was about 2 and very unimpressed hahaha! We followed his career from afar - but I really fell in love with his 1980 album "This Time." Saw him on TV the other night with Tavis Smiley. Still magnificently elegant and charming.

Abe Laboriel and Steve Gadd are so in the pocket on bass and drums, Larry Williams gives a master class in keyboards and passing chords and Al's vocal is incredible! Real musicians.

    Al Jarreau - vocals;
    Larry Williams - Fender Rhodes and Synth;
    Steve Gadd - drums
    Abe Laboriel - bass.
Just a great rendition of a timeless Chick Corea classic featuring a terrific Al, as always plus a killer band. While Corea has played with Jarreau on many occasions, he did not play on the This Time album. (He was still heavily involved working with Herbie Hancock at this time - the two of them performing in concert playing Yamaha grand pianos.)

I was working at Dawnbreaker Studio at the time of this recording, though I was not working the session, I was present for an unreleased recording of this song. Slightly different line-up. Stanley Clarke on bass and Chick himself on the Rhodes! Al's live vocal with the basic track gave me goosebumps! And Steve Gadd was incredible-of course! Mind blowing opportunity I'll never forget!

I worked hard to get this right. What memories with Spain. I am reminded of sheer romance. "Where every song we sang is sung again; and now we know; we know this time it's for good; and we're lovers once again; and you're near me." WOW! Brighter days; I can see such brighter days; I can remember the rain in December, the leaves are brown on the ground. In Spain I did love and adore you; the nights filled with joy were our yesterdays; and tomorrow will bring you near me." AND there is no one in particular to whom I attach this romance; just the lyrics alone ooze of it. Who can write this kind of electrifying connection? "I can recall my desire, e-ver-y reverie is on fire and I get a picture of all our yesterdays, yesterday I can say, I get a kick every time they play that Spain again!" (Stick a fork in me . . . I'm done!) Thank you, Al!

    Yesterday
    Just a photograph of yesterday
    and all it's edges folded
and the corners faded sepia brown
and yet it's all I have of our past love
a post script to it's ending
    Brighter days
I can see such brighter days
when every song we sang is sung again
    and now we know
we know this time it's for good
    and we're lovers once again
    and you're near me
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown on the ground
in Spain I did love and adore you
the nights filled with joy were our yesterdays
and tomorrow will bring you near me
    I can recall my desire
every reverie is on fire and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    yes today, I can say
I get a kick every time they play that spain again
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown on the ground
Our love was a spanish fiesta
the bright lights and sounds were our joy each day
and the nights were the heat of yearning
I can recall my desire every reverie
is on fire and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    yes today, I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    I see moments of history
your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castanets
and forever we'll know their meaning
I can recall my desire every reverie is on fire
and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    yes, today, I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    [music solo]
    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
    your eyes meet mine
and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castenets
and forever we'll know their meaning
    I can recall my desire
    every reverie is on fire
and I get a picture of all our yesterdays
    yes today I can say
I get a kick every time I see you gaze at me
    be do de
    [scat solo]
    You gaze at me
    I see moments of history
your eyes meet mine and they dance to the melody
and we live again as if dreaming
the sound of our hearts beat like castanets
and forever we'll know their meaning
I can remember the rain in december
the leaves of brown tumbling down
in spain I did love and adore you

and tomorrow will bring you near me
