Hello, why do you use Kahle hooks over circle. I use kahles for estuary and circles for reef. I don’t find a benefit. Are kahles more forgiving if you strike? Thanks and tight lines
G'day buddy, appreciate the message. Kahles are effectively a type of circle hook, just a wider gap. When using them out at the reef you have to be wary of short striking still mate, over time you will get a feel for when the fish hits and turns and then strike. Braid is now more widely used on the reef, so you don't have the benefit of the fish hanging itself as I have mentioned in the clip. Good luck mate... Cheers Westo 🎣🎣
@@BenWeston_westofish Thanks so much. I have found they work well when the fish runs but never hook them with finicky strikes. Might have to buy some larger ones to try out in the reef.
Cheers Ben. Changed my braid to mono like you said and chucked on a wide gap hook and bang. Got my first barra just off PNG on the weekend. Went 77cm, then a 58cm five minutes later!
I dont know if the live mullet i'm using is too big or what, but every time I get a hit the barra manages to spit the livey out unhooked. I run 30lb mono main line and 60 lb leader, khale hooks and lip hook the mullet
Mate I don't think they'd be to big mate, bigger the better. Are you pre setting your drag to 1/3 the breaking strain of the main line?? Someone in winter they will nip or of environmental conditions are effecting them.
Ben Weston hi mate cheers for reply. Yeah I set it to what I guess is 1/3 breaking strain. Again today I had 6 good runs from barras but no hook ups, each time mullet returned with no scales, clearly sucked by a barra but just isn’t hooking up. I fish land based at river mouths and use a running sinker rig, however as soon as I see the rod start bending over I grab it and wait for the barra to self hook itself but they always drop it. Tough fishing up here in North Queensland for me at the moment! Hah
@@Charles-bd5qi mate we are in a transition mate, water temp has dropped a few degrees so they can get like that. I encourage you to be patient grabbing the rod, let the barra hang itself and even pull string before you grab it.. Make sure your drag is set 1/3 breaking strain of the line. Winter bites can be shit mate and frustrating. Be patient, it will come! Cheers Westo
Ben Weston cheers ya bloody legend. During closed season I managed to land a 1.3m monster whilst fishing for threadfin on herrings, straight off the beach. got her back nice and healthy thanks to your tip using the large eagle claw hooks, nice corner of the mouth hookup. Nothing since then but I will keep trying!!

Yeah mate, a finicky bite is definately tougher.
Thanks for the video but can you still use braid?
Informative vid mate, cheers. Quick question. What pound mono do you use for barra? At the moment I'm running 30 pound with 40 pound leader.
Thanks mate, please share if you think other will get something out of it.
Mainline I use 10kg pre-test and leader usually 80lb Black Magic.

Do you use a swivel to tie leader to main line? Or a knot?
A bit sad that barra a getting so rare these days, especially in the CQ area
Tying a granny knot to stop your sinker creates a weak point in the mono 👍
