Being a first responder during COVID-19 and having your wash go out hasn’t been fun. After three repairman failed to show, I decided to do it myself. Because of your instruction I was able to complete the repair and get back to work. Thank you.
For those with a stuck tub, I used a bottle jack, cut a couple boards to fit under the lip of the washer then placed bottle jack on top of shaft and raised until it was pressing against the boards thereby lifting the tub away from the shaft. Also for those without a spanner wrench (if yours needs it, use a hole punch or chisel and tap the nut counterclockwise with a hammer. This video was pure gold! Couldn't have completed the gear case change on my wtw5500xw1 without it!
To those having a ton of trouble getting the tub off the shaft, don't give up. I had to use a 2x4 and a bottle jack. I even had to put the bolt back in the shaft because the jack bottomed out on the tub before it came free from the shaft. There are videos of how to perform this task right here on RUclips. To the person who made this video, thank you so much. You saved me a ton of money.
Yup, I used my car jack and a 2x4. I also had the issue of the jack bottoming out so I placed a 13/16 socket on top of the shaft and balanced the jack on the socket and it finally came all the way loose. "It's a really easy job", yeah right 😒🤥
I don’t understand why you have to remove the basket if there’s nothing beneath it you have to unfasten to get the gear case out…
Great step by step directions! IMPORTANT CAUTION TO THOSE PERFORMING REPLACEMENT. I followed the instructions and it worked perfectly, until the Fast Spin Cycle. Sounded like it was spinning too fast. I was wrong. Spent a lot of time trying different things. Came to conclude it was an alignment issue with the Hub fasteners and the Gear-case bolts. The hub fasteners are accessed from inside the wash tub. (Top side) Whereas the Gear-case bolts to the housing under the machine. (underneath) The first time, I bolted these down separately, not thinking of the slight alignment condition which ensured. The second time (after the noise in the fast spin mode) I loosened both the gear -case bolts and the hub fasteners screws. (Loosened, not removed) I then moved the gear-case around a bit to re-seat the rubber washer inside of the bottom of the tub. I then tightened the gear-case bolts a bit. (Not fully tight.) I then flipped the unit back up, and secured the previously loosened hub screws and set the horse shoe fastener. The I flipped the unit back over again to fully tighten the gear-case bolts. IT WORKED! No loner sounds like a jet plane taking off when in Fast Spin cycle. Hope this helps others. It worked for me.
Thank you for sharing this.
“Hub fasteners”? What hub fasteners?
Great Video! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for all of us... makes our lives much easier!!
Excellent video! I work on cars all the time and I've fixed AC units, refrigerators, washers, and dryers in the past, but never done a gear case on a washer before, so I was reluctant. This video featured a nearly identical unit to my model and is so detailed that anyone with basic tools can handle it. Thanks again!
Really appreciate your video, your instructions are spot on,don't forget to recalibrate when repair is complete
Thanks for the how to. Would’ve figured it out but you saved me time and frustration. Again thanks so much!
Thanks so much for the video. It took a while to find one with the right parts but this helped immensely on my Bravos X. Don't forget to calibrate the machine when the repair is finished.
Just did this a few days, and it was greatly appreciated. after 10 years, i took all the parts outside and powerwashed all the slime and crude off the drum, the plastics and hub. no amount of "Cleaner" cycles were removing that.
getting the spline out of the hub took some work due to the build up of crud and a little rust.
Thank you sir. You saved me lots of money and my washer is clean too. Thank you thank you.
Excellent instructions. Very good video quality.
Fantastic video! I used this to install Whirlpool Part W11159068 (essentially the same part) into my Maytag Centennial Washer I purchased 15 years ago. Pretty much everything is identical except the for the fact my washer has an agitator.
Excellent video. Everything you need to know.
Great video. Very detailed, and definitely made everything easilier @1820
I was checking my route tomorrow and saw this job. My trainer who I spent 3 weeks with had a look of concern knowing that I was going to take this job alone when the part came in. He said to make it (three stops) to give my self time. Do you realize how much time you probably saved me?!! Bless you.
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for the detailed instruction, my Maytag Bravos X was loud during spin and found it was the gear case. Other information online for Bravos X lead to bad bearings but after looking underneath the machine it had the gear case which couldn’t be taken apart. Your video helped me take the machine apart, change the gear case, and put it back together. Thank you very much!
Same with my Whirlpool Cabrio. I hate the throwaway society and lack of replaceable parts, such as bearings.
I just did the repair. Put it in a recalibration. Now it won't fill or wash. If it's in the automatic test mode it runs through everything in finishes. Just won't do it when on a wash cycle. I'm a appliance tech been doing it for 6 years. I'm stumped
@@joshuamills765What was the solution to your stated problem?
Thank You Sir! Very Nice Video and Enjoying Your Professional Teaching!
I love this!!! By the numbers, step by step so even a neanderthal like me can understand what to do!!! Very clear, very detailed!!!
Thank you so much for this!!!
Thanks very helpful...👍
Awesome video. Thanks😎❤😎
Thanks this helped a ton, I didn't remove the pump and saved a few minutes.
Glad it helped
Perfect
Thanks for the video, it was helpful. A couple of comments. One, I have had to replace the gearcase twice. The washer is only 8 years old, but it is clear that the gearcase design has some problems. Secondly, removing the inner tub can be a problem. As you suggested, I used some penetrant, but it still wouldn't come out. There is a RUclips video that shows a method using a 2x4 and a car jack to get the inner tub out. I know, sounds pretty sketchy, but it worked.
I have an idea how to fix the issue on maytag washer without replacing the gearcase and the hub's ass'y,please response to my email,I'll show you how it's done!.
@@eddychakkaw4546 Hi Eddy
I'm interested in your idea about the gearcase. Please elaborate. Mine is loud(howling) when spinning.
This worked great! It really helped to have about two more sets of hands and eyes to get tools and hold things. 😂
Thank you so much. I feel I am already an expert technician after viewing this amazing video. I will try to replace mine when it is due.
Do you need to add oil or does the new gear case come with it already. Thanks for a great instructional video!
Cool. Got any videos where the washplate wasn't previously loosened before filming, so we can see what REALLY needs to happen to pull the POS out?
Great informative video. I am replacing the gear box of my 4 year old lightly used Kenmore/Whirlpool washer, that by accident I discovered was leaking oil real bad. Waiting for that gear box, only one question that caught my eye, when the impeler is removed, visible at the bottom of the drum, there is an arrow, what is that arrow indicating??. Thank you.
Thats arrow is for a bearing specialty tool and what position to put it at. This model doesn't need it. I'm sure the tubs are the same on both units though.
I'm just curious if the gear case can be replaced without removing the tub. Will have to replace the gear case soon with my parents' washer.
Thank you for the informative video. I followed your instructions, everything went together just like the video. However, my washer has been making a HORRIBLE screeching noise while in the rinse mode. Do you have any idea what could be causing this?
If anyone else experiences this screeching/ high pitched grinding, replace the splutch assembly. I did & my problem went away.
Taking a long shot here, I took off the 7/16 nut in the washer, took off the 4 10mm bolts, you were able the pull the it right out. I cannot pull it out even using some pry bars, any ideas?
Es medio PUERCO no LIMPIO Las tapa PERO ME enseño mucho gracias
I have a 5 year old Kenmore washer, started making grinding noises. The tech and I though it was a worn washplate but the washplate was fine. He consulted with other techs and concluded it was the gear case. How long should a gear case last in a washer?
What about calibration? I thought after main control, basket, drive assembly, suspension, motor, or capacitor that recalibration is required?
I have a Maytag Bravos that wont spin (F7 E1). I changed the actuator, that didn't help. In diagnostic mode I ran the cycles test and when it got to the agitating cycle it seem to be straining. I took off the drive belt and ran the test again and the motor is agitating and spinning as normal .I am thinking of changing the gearcase, but seeing that it is a very expensive part, I want to be sure that is the problem. Is there a way I can test to ensure that that is the culprit. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
We had a similar problem. The culprit was a nylon disk. The teeth had worn off and it wasn’t engaging with the gear case. We ordered a PS6012095 Drive Hub Kit and replaced the nylon piece. About $25.
My model for MVBW 835TW0 Maytag washer doesn’t have the horseshoe clip, so how do I remove it?
My four bolt 🔩 holes on the gear tranny don't sit flush with the plastic washer tub holes. The back ones are farther away. Is this normal?
Did anyone's gearcase shaft have any up down movement?
Crazy to think how much easier this is than the previous 30+ years of transmissions and crap to deal with.
Been there ... done that on my Whirlpool Cabrio.
Was this because it would agitate and not spin that was my issue changed actuator and lid switch and still wouldn’t spin
I have a Whirlpool compact front load dryer model WED7500VW that I need to change the start capacitor and do not know how to get to it. Front panel screws are to
close to the drum to unscrew and back panel supports the drum. Any ideas?
Do you still need help
That wash plate never ever cons out that easy.
I can't get the tub loose from the washer. I used the jack method to get it loosened. I've got it lifted as far as the jack will lift it. But it still will not come off. The shaft it barely showing the whole it was in, in the tub. Any suggestions?
I'm probably too late to help you, but I had a similar problem. I used this jack method as well. This method is described in another RUclips video. My solution is hard to describe, but here goes. I put a long 5/8" socket over the shaft. I repositioned the jack and this gave me enough extra "throw" to get the tub off the shaft. You need about 3 hands. The jack sits on the socket and you have to hold the 2x4 and then turn the jackscrew.
How much vertical shaft play is too much? Would excessive shaft play indicate a replacement transmission?
The up and down play in the shaft is 1/8 of an inch , more than that you will have issues with the splutch engagement, likely slipping. You are correct replacing the transmission is the only recourse.
Steve, when you said "Its a really easy job", you lied. I could hear the pain in your voice when you said it. You don't need to mess with the truth. Its a terrible job on most Whirlpools that actually need the gearcase. Great tutorial though!
Do you have to recalibrate the washer after the repair?
rugerdog77able yes
What does that involve?
Nevermind, the part came with instructions on how to do it.
Called Maytag and they said the loud noise is from needing to change the tub seal and bearings. Ordered parts and it doesn’t look correct.
Can you change the tub seal and bearings on that gearbox?
Or do you just change the gearbox?
Did you ever find an answer?
I have a 7 month old washer. Why would the gear case go bad on brand new washer.
I've had 20 year old washer previously.
As I mentioned in a comment above, I have had to replace the gearcase in my washer twice. It is 8 years old. I would guess that the gearcase is poorly designed and/or uses inferior parts. I will never buy a Whirlpool again.
Now what would be the symptoms of that needing replacement? Washer shaking and banging? Replaced suspension rods and still did not solve problem.
Very course and loud noise when in spin mode, and, as was the case with mine, water pouring out of the bottom of the machine onto the floor.
The impeller on mine is not coming off by hand as in the video. I just about broke my back trying to get it off with no luck. Seems like it’s rusted onto the shaft so I’m at a loss now for repairing it.
Vinegar and degreaser with boiling hot water!
How do you know if the Gear case is bad? I have error code F7 E1 it won't rinse thought it was the actuator but didn't fix the problem.
it will sound like you have a subway in your laundry room when it starts its spin cycle.
If it sounds like an airplane taking off, chances it's your gearbox. Does your tub spin freely by hand or did it lock up? If it locked up, you can break it loose by hand and get a couple of months out of it before having to replace the gear box. It's certainly cheaper to do this as oppose to buying a new one!! Good luck!
I'm in the same boat. Is it the gearcase or maybe just a bad hub? It didn't sound like a subway, it was squeaking and I thought the spluch went bad again.
It ended up being my drain pump.
@@rodrigomejia9096 I'm hoping it's just the drive hub. Glad you got it figured out.
Does anyone know how to test the gearcase? I'm not a 100 percent that's what is wrong with my washer.
anyone figure out how to get the seal off the motor?
That whole part must be replaced if bearing makes noise you can't just replace the bearings on this model
My machine tub deopped anout 6inhes and then qouldnt drain.
We can’t get the tub to come out!
any luck? I used the scissor jack from my car and some wood similar (but different) to this ruclips.net/video/F4C01kEHXNA/видео.html
Why did you take the tub off? Can you leave it there ?
I replaced mine without taking the tub off. I did have to loosen up the gearcase from the bottom and the stand the washer back up so gravity would help pull it down. Took handle of a hammer and just tapped it down. Laid it back on it's front and pulled the gearcase out. When putting it back it, the gearcase fit all the way in but the tub didn't slide all the way down so I did have to pop a few of the plastic tabs on the outer ring to loosen some tension and it just dropped all the way down. So yes, you can leave it there you will just have to work a little more at getting the case back out and in.
That's what I was thinking. It likely isn't necessary to completely remove the tub.
How do you remove tub that is frozen ,stuck, rusted to gear Case gear. Had to air hammer wash plate off. What a pain in ass
My washer is only 2 months old and this needs replaced already ! Lowes sold me a piece of junk and refuse to give me a new washer ! I don’t want it replaced I want a new one
Forget it!
I don’t understand why you have to remove the basket if there’s nothing beneath it you have to unfasten to get the gear case out…
Average people love to get in the techs way and they try to do it themselves just to find out later its not so easy.
I got 1 minute into this job. my washplate won't come off..
That's easy?
OMG Look at all that soft plastic, no wonder these washers suck. They really are junk today...
You don’t de charge the capacitor?
It doesn't hold a charge worth a damn
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS REPAIR unless you are a professional. My agitator would not come out. I tried all the things and finally gave up.
I got a washer that doesn't agitate or spin what could it be
That whole part must be replaced if bearing makes noise you can't just replace the bearings on this model
