Hi Jabo thanks this helped me out on a UK spec. RHD 2010 8J TT. If it helps anyone else from 11:40- to remove the switch electroninc unit easily, remove the silver #9 torx screw, just below it is a small hole. Push a 2.5mm or 3/32'' drill into this hole put it in about 45mm just under 2 inches, to release the front clip. Box will hang down. Now get a torch and look behind the central rear plug for this unit , you will see another clip push this clip gently and the unit will be released. Take care with this unit as it contains static sensitive electroninc components.
Rest of this guide was spot on so thanks again .
Bro thank you so much 🙏
Thanks 🤌🏼
Great video, i used it when my A3 ignition switch broke. After i connected the battery the ESP light and steering warning lights came on. However just turning the wheel fully left and fully right fixed the issue, the ESP went off as soon as i drove it, so many thanks
😮
thanks so much for this vid. was really helpful. mine broke last week and this vid really made the replacement so easy. thanks. I struggled with taking off that module under the steering as well, but found online that if you put a tiny long screwdriver or small allen key all the way down into the small hole on the module that faceses your drivers position, that it pops it off. the second clip can be released from the rear of that module simply with your index finger.
Glad it helped and thanks for the input
Had this problem with my a3 today so many thanks to you
Thanks a million! I have managed to remove the locker! But removing those screws was... I mean, I don't know how many times you did this, but for me it's my first and last time! Really! But it worked and I thank you for that! 🙏
Thanks for the life saving instructions. I got stranded and was forced to remove the cilinder, that was jamed and locking the steering wheel, in order to drive back.
Aniway, I changed it and now I have the airbag warning light on, and also the washer fluid and rear wiper won't work.
For the airbag I was thinking it's because I drove without the steering wheel airbag connected. And I hope it will dissapear one I erase it with a diagnose tool.
But for the wiper lever partialy functional, I have no ideea.
Great guide 👍 . Wouldn’t have had a clue what to do without it. Although I did consult other videos to use the no drill method and cut slots in the top of the bolts to tighten them back in with a screwdriver. Took my time , as it took 3 weeks for Audi to get me the correct barrel anyway! Got there in the end :)
Glad it helped!
Guys I'm still not sure how to take out this box underneath the ignition, the plugs are both out but I'm stuck
Did you end managing to take the box off? what was stopping it?@@sabelomabaso5848
Great video, I’m sure I’m the 159 guy to say that! Great job, I stumbled on your video after repairing someone hacked job of an ignition replacement. I programmed some blank keys that needed the chip to start the car.
My ignition did the same today, apart from it would not turn on. 6 - 8 week wait to get the part from Germany. At least now I know how to change it when it arrives, great video 👍🏻
Just happened to my Audi TT. Quite a bit to replace. I thought it would be easier. Shes going to the mechanics! Very informative video though!
Happened to my 2007 3.2 V6 TT yesterday

If your key is stuck and can’t take it off or doesn’t want to turn on just release the tilt at the bottom and give it some movement up n down a little hard and then try to turn your key might have to try a couple of times or move it a little harder but it does work a couple of times
Thanks, my knowledge is limited so this video showed me I really shouldn’t attempt it. Leaving the car running for a few hours till I can get it to the shop. Thanks again
Glad this was helpful and to teach you what you are capable of and not making the job harder for your mechanic
Thanks for putting together such a great video. Helped me to fix my 2010 A3
Thanks a lot . You helped me because I have the same problem. Good video Thanks for help. Now I know how to fix it!
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much, I followed your guide to replace lock cylinder of my Seat Leon 1P1, it's just a bit different but the method is the same.
Glad it helped!
Thanks just done my daughters car perfect step by step

Gracias
Best one I’ve seen yet good job 👍🏻
Excellent video. Easy to understand you! Thanks alot
Really excellent explanation on the Audi great job
Thanks for the vid done a great job really explained everything looks like a fair bit of work so think its mechanics job lol.
I just had this happen to me yesterday! The key inserted won't turn, messed with the steering wheel while turning the key caused the key cylinder to rotate 360 then steering wheel locked again. Had to have my car towed to Audi.
Thank you
Thank you so much for that video , got the same problèm
Audi/vw should be sued for this malfunction. How they’re not yet is beyond me. The fact that this is happening at all is a safety hazard.
How much cost the pieces?
Great video my problem isn’t a broken key but ignition that doesn’t turn off with Key STILL IN! Engine, Radio, fan and lights stays on. Only goes off when I take key out so just wondering if it is just the ignition switch it’s a 2012 A3 UK RHD
Why is my airbag light on after I replaced the ignktion?
Bonjour et merci beaucoup pour cette video j ai reussi a démonter mon neiman sens probleme 😉👍🏽
Something there just in the tip of the ignition is broken which enters the ignition switch and now if I turn the key it only unlocks the steering wheel but can't start since can't reach the switch
Awesome job
Hey after you take the steering wheel off and you get to the black box below the steering wheel where you had trouble with the yellow air bag clip in the back you can just remove the black bottom plate, take out the green electronics board and push 2 black clips to get that out. It all just slides out and you dont even have to worry about unplugging the yellow and black plugin. Did you want me to make a quick video to show you?
Yes please!
Oh my god that was so much easier!!! Took about 30 seconds, couldn't help but laugh. Thanks both!!
Thx for the Video 👍🏼
Ever have a situation were the key stops working in the door hole and ignition but still works on the glove box. The car has been sitting for about a year so at first I thought I had the wrong key but when I tried it on the glove box it worked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Great video. I have an A3 and the ignition is a bit sticky. Back and forth. And my radio will come back on on its own if I don’t turn it off at the unit. Also, my locking will work sometimes. Then other ms won’t work unless I jab the key into the ignition and then try again. You reckon I need the whole ignition barrel and switch also?
Thanks
Hello and thank you for the video. When you say to not cycle through or you’ll have more problems; how do you fix that issue? I think I did and my car is running but when I remove the key, the car continues to chime like the key is still in the ignition. Everything else works though. Please let me know what you think. Thank you!
Thanks a lot dude 👍
Very good, but how did you get the key barrel out ? You mentioned a pin and next thing you put the new barrel in.
Thank you. If you have dealer make a new insert for your personal key, it will match your RFID still, correct?
Do u have the part needed to fix the ignition?
So I've just followed your video excellent 👍 stripped right down .the thing is my key won't turn at all so I can't get the ignition switch out can I just buy new barrel with key ect
Yes that is correct
Hey great video really explains it my A3 the steering lock wouldn't engage and key worked fine now the steering lock does lock and the key doesn't fully turn for ignition lights to turn on u think it's the same issue as yours?
Try moving the steering wheel back and forth and turning the key to unlock it.
@@JaboTheMechanic been trying that and wd40 in the barrel
Never spray wd 40. Email me your number so i can call you chrisjabo1991@gmail.com
Good done thanks you
Many thanks
Glad it helped
Screws come out easily with just a small flathead. Just takes a little finagling.
What do you do if you cycled the new key switch
So...I have an 06 Audi a6 Avant and having issues with I'm guessing the starter? My key gets stuck and car won't even let me unlock doors, move seats, pop trunk. I have had to jump it each time which releases my key and starts car. Unfortunately, with the cost of actually going to get it fixed by someone, I will have to do it myself or get rid of her. I have had this car for 14 years now and it makes me physically ill to think of not having it anymore. If you have any advice on this and if it is something "easily" fixable that would be very helpful.
I've had the same problem with my wife's 2005 Audi A3 and had local dealer to replace the ignition cylinder. However, once the problem with the stuck key was resolved, another one came into place just after the car left the shop. Now we have PRNDS indicator blinking when the selector is in R, N D, or S position.
Any ideas what could went wrong during cylinder replacement, so we are having this blinking issue now? I mean it is clearly an electrical issue, since the car shifts and drives smoothly as before.
How much was the replacement at the dealer ??? Having same issue with 2006 A3
Não entendi o que você falou, mas achei muito boa sua explicação, obrigado por compartilhar seu conhecimento
hat funktioniert 🎉🎉
Thanks man this vid really made my day
Glad it helped!
what would i have to do if the key does not turn.
13:06 why my car doesn’t have that part?
Very informative video.

Thank you. Glad it helped!
@@JaboTheMechanic I have the same model Audi and I am replacing the barrel now.

Keep up the videos , great job man👍🏼
@@ll-rb7or great that is awesome! Im proud of you!
Tks for sharing great job!
You are welcome
22:20 you mention that "make sure you transfer this guy" so what is that part ? I have 2006 Octavia and my key wont go to ON position anymore, it is stuck. Now I cannot use the pin-method to take the sylinder out, I have spare part lock and from that I managed to get the cylinder out.. Can I force the cars key to turn to ON position with any means? If I have to take the old lock (and wheel etc) and replace the whole thing with new spare part, is it necessary to transfer also that part that you mention at 22:20
At 22:58 “don’t cycle this yet” I did and can’t get it to move now. What did you do?
i know this an old thread but does anyone know what is the part that goes on the back of the housing? at 25:20. i either lost mine or it didnt have one. 8p 2.0t fwd manual car btw.
Great Video! I'm doing this on my 2010 Jetta and cycled my new Ignition Housing to see if it worked not knowing it would stay locked. You mentioned you did this once. Can you tell me how you were able to fix it, if at all? I'm awaiting the ignition cylinder and I realize I have to have the ignition housing and cylinder in the ON position in order to connect them, correct?
Just noticed your thread with Seb Hall below and just wanted to clarify that you can connect the new ignition housing cylinder and the new ignition cylinder even tho the housing cylinder is already in the locked position? Asking because I don't have the ignition cylinder yet from the dealer.
Did you get this figured out? Were you still able to use it?
We need to replace the key lock cylinder on our Audi A4 2007. Dealer is unable to get the part due to manufacturing plant being closed due to covid 19. So, we found a salvage part with key. Will this process be the same with a salvaged part? Can we still use the same key in the current car or will we have to have the dealer reprogram entire car? The dealer actually said it could be a month or longer to get the part. So we are trying to come up with an alternate plan. Let me know what you think. Thank you.
Even though they say it will take a month doesnt mean that. I got mine in 3days. If you get it from a junk yard you dont need to program if you switch the key heads
Jabo The Mechanic Thank you. Is it easy to switch the key heads? We need to replace the key lock cylinder and tumbler. Where did you get this part? Dealer literally told us it’s impossible to get this part new due to the plant not being open. Thoughts?
Not true. You can order it. On the key head has a pin. I show you how to remove it in the video.
nice job!!!!
Thank you!
How much is this procedure??
Hi there, so this happened to my A3 last week. I got an ignition from a junk yard with its key. Can I simply install this and use the key that came with it? The key coding thing is a bit confusing to me
You don't have to code the key you need to switch the new key blade to the to the old fob
Thank you! Im doing this job tomorrow and this video helps massively
Great video! I have one question: Just to clarify, when ordering the ignition lock cylinder from the dealer I would just need to provide the vin# and key code(also, what is the key code?) and then I can replace the part and I wouldn't have to take it to the dealership for any further coding?
All you need is the vin # and thats all
I have exactly same vehicle and issue happened to me 2 days ago. I need to know, does the key need to be programmed after I change the ignition switch, or can I use old key right away ?
I used the old key. No need for a program
I have the same problem, I ordered a part and it came with a new key but not the fob, I wanted to know if it will have a problem communicating with the transponder.
There is a pin that lets you switch out the transponder. I show it in the video
@@JaboTheMechanic the mechanic I took it to drilled right through the barrel and damaged it and the new barrel doesn't have its own fob, after it was replaced and the cables were plugged back in the car wouldn't turn of start, sometimes it says lights on even though the lights are off on the car.
Well thats your mechanics fault he needs to fix his mistake
Great video, right at 25.20 in the video, you say make sure you" transfer this guy " .what is that part ? as I have lost mine during a lengthy rebuild and can't find it ! Car now starts but shuts off after a few seconds, I guess that part is something to do with immobiliser?. Regards Mark
Yes you do need it. Luckily you can grab it from old vw from the junkyard
@@JaboTheMechanic what is that part ?
Great video! My ignition has just started to get sticky... will it be worth spraying some WD40 or some kind of dry lubricant?
Graphite lupe. Its a dry Lube that won't attract dirt
@@JaboTheMechanic Ok cool. Thanks so much!
I'm guessing you don't have to take the whole lot off as long as you get to the air bag part and put a bag over it? Maybe put electrical tape to stop the clear part spinning
You have to take everything off to remove it only way
@@JaboTheMechanic perfect bud, cheers for the reply
No problem anytime
Great video! Do you know if it is the same process for a 2007 audi a4?
Yes
same with me mines is a 2008 audi4. The key is not stuck but it wont turn over when turning the key.
Do you know what it could be if my key is hard to turn. It broke the plastic housing on my key. Car starts but you need to turn really hard, hints the broken key. 2007 Audi A3 car runs fine
Yes the whole ignition switch is broken
Jabo The Mechanic thank you so much I’ll order the part and try fixing it myself. Video would be super helpful :)
You are welcome! Glad it helped!
Giovanni Mora I think I'm having the same problem as yours. Did you replace the ignition switch and is the key turning as it should now?
Mariglen Duraku yes it was the ignition switch. But now I don’t have the accessory position for some odd reason. But the car starts up fine now
I lost the keys to my Audi A4 Quattro.. the dealer ship won’t make a key cus it’s a salvaged title... idk what to do?
Have a lock Smith come out
FFS STEERING WHEEL IS ON THE WRONG SIDE 😆
Hi is this the same way for a 2008 Audi A3 too
Yes it is
Would this be the same process on a 2007 A3?
Yes
Jabo The Mechanic do you know what size extractor you used?
@@carlosrobles5226 it was the small size that came with the kit
Any tips to disconnect the clip with the red safety I'm pushing dwn but struggling to get it out
Exact time that you are talking about
Thanks for reply I managed to get it off gr8 vid so far so gd
Good day friend, I have an audi a3 2008 and my radio turns on and off and the electrical locks are removed and put, they tell me it is the ignition switch, do I have to do all that to change it or is there an easier way?
If its the switch than yes. Because its sold as one whole unit
@@JaboTheMechanic its the Electric relay bro
@@JaboTheMechanic the one than its in other side of the entrance of the key
hi mate, my s3 8p 2008 has started playing up aswel. the stereo turns on and off sometimes when i press window switches or turn the steering wheel or press the brakes. i have a fault code:
00883-Ignition Starter Switch (clamp s).
im guessing i need to change the whole switch as shown in the video above.
Anyone here
when we buy the new one we need the new keys ?
No it will be made to your keys
Hey Jabo, thanks for the amazing video! Quick question: I have the same vehicle (mine is a 2008.5 A3 TFSI) my key turns into first position but then will not go any past that point. The steering wheel is not locked and I can move the wheel freely (w/o power steering of course) from one side to the next, which is weird to me. The key is not stuck; I can turn it back and pull in out. The electronics shut off after about 30 - 60 seconds. Does this sound like another key ignition issue to you? Thanks in advance! And once again, amazing video--thank you!
Yeah its going to be the whole ignition lock assembly
@@JaboTheMechanic Well, at least I have a great tutorial! Thanks man!

@@JaboTheMechanic Awesome, thank you! It looks pretty straight forward-but I will definitely reach out if I run into an issue. Thank you again! (Just subscribed)

I am stuck @ 19:12 and unable to slide that black housing piece out the way you shown in your video. I have removed the 2 bolts but having hard time to get this last part off. any suggestions? I don't have a key in the ignition like yours.
Are you still stuck
@@JaboTheMechanic hey thanks for responding. No I got it. got everything installed back. car started up fine, just few fault code and warning lights came on which I am going to clear them out and hope they will not come back. Did you have the warning light show up after your installation was done?
Sometimes they come on but clear them and never come back.
So I accidentally turned the new lock to the off position like you said not to do. Do you know how I can fix that?
Put your thumb on the steering lock and turn it with the key to lock it in place so you can bolt it to the steering column
@@JaboTheMechanic will the lock turn to the ignition position or just before it? Thanks
@@seh97 the lock will hold it in place but your key will be there untill you install it
Hi, I accidentally turned my ignition housing to OFF position as well. Were you able to attach the ignition cylinder and ignition housing in the OFF (locked) position? Thanks.

Do you have a diagram of where all the connectors go?

Hey, so quick question. I'm not sure if I heard you correct or not, did you say at the beginning of the video that the PRNDS was flashing due to a bad ignition lock? I have a bad lock and also flashing dash lights, so wondering if there is a connection.? TIA
Yes that what happen.
I've got the same problem with my 2005 A3 SE, out of curiosity, do you need to get new keys if you have the ignition cylinder changed?
They can be linked together the computer will recognize a fault
@@JaboTheMechanic Yeah, I took it in to be looked at and when it was on the computer an error with my ignition barrel came up, hopefully once its changed, it fixes it
@@JaboTheMechanic I just changed out my cylinder for the second time, however now my PRNDS is flashing when in gear and my airbag light is on? Double and tripled check the connections and they are good. What now?
💪💪💪
Very Clear video, thanks VM. I had the same problem with my VW Golf(pretty much exactly the same inside as this Audi) but I repaired the problem without removing the steering or dead bolts. I removed the broken steering lock by drilling a hole through the bottom of the aluminium ignition barrel housing. I did have to remove the ignition 'innards' and reassemble. What’s the part numbers

Yes it should!
Jabo The Mechanic sweet, thanks!
will my key still work with the new one? O.o
Yes the dealership will have it made for your vin#
