And to be clear, when I say review scores have been "mixed" I mean in the context of them aiming for a 10/10. Some scores are that high, and others are down in the 7/8 range. The overall reviews are all overwhelmingly positive, we're just debating whether it's "great" or "a masterpiece." Thank you for watching! ~ Luke
Honestly the collectibles in this game feels less tedious than the first one. I was actually upset there wasn’t more to do. It was relatively easy and fast to unlock fast travel for each district
I also don't get the hate for the open World approach they have. I guess it's fun to shit on something without actually providing an alternative. What do you want, endless sidequests and prolong the production by 2 more years? Open World side activities were fine, just don't do it if you hate taking fun pictures of some goofy scenes, good god...
open world side activities are part of the overall $70 package you paid for. People who paid have every right to criticise whatever aspect of the game they feel was disappointing. @@Schmiddiize
@chrisstucker1813 if I hate pizza and pasta and visit an Italian restaurant, I think you complaining about the food there is worth less honestly. Seriously the sandbox side stuff was good and not tedious for the genre. Think about hogwarts legacy, now that was trash side activities doing 150 merlin quests
what? that analogy makes no sense. This is an open world game which always rely not only on the main story - but the side content too in order to deliver the full experience. The story and campaign is the main dish, the side content is like your starters and sides. I paid for those too didn't I? So if I wanna leave feedback about it then I'm more than entitled to. @@Schmiddiize
As for complaints (Spoilers) I felt as though Peter was extremely nerfed numerous times throughout the story simply to help the plot but it really demeans him as a 10+ year spiderman. Even in the final battle he kinda gets sidelined where he gets super fatigued and injured but all we ever see is him getting grabbed by venom and in the next sequence venom arrives holding Peter and his entire suit is torn and hes borderline unconscious. just to allow miles to have his encounter as well. And of course the fact he got one shotted and killed by kraven. I also wish they did more with the symbiote in terms of animations. Swing styles. Walk styles. Dodge animations. Even the basic combo stays the same. Outside of the attack abilities and black webbing there isn't much to differentiate what is suppose to be the beloved symbiote suit and regular ol spidey. Web of shadows nailed the symbiotes move set perfectly. However Outside of those complaints I find the game to be a great piece of content and a technical marvel . I love this game and it's been worth the wait for me.
@jessicaw7563 My only agreement here is that Peter wasn't nerfed against Kraven. Both spidermen got into serious trips from getting grazed by scorpions tail. Kraven took a direct stab near the heart and laughed. Man was ridiculously OP and thus could one shot Peter.

I think it’s a great game, but what is frustrating is the lack of a NG+ and the ability to change the time of day after the game ends. I don’t mind that there’s not a day/night cycle, but with 5 years of development a small thing like that is mandatory. And for NG+, I really want to be able to go into a new save without having to unlock all the suits and gadgets again.
14:08 What?!?! I never knew this was a problem. I love going around the map collecting stuff. Recently "The Completionist" said on FPS podcast that this game is the easiest to platinum because he didn't even realize he completed it. He just naturally got around to doing everything. Same thing here. I love doing all that stuff. Can't believe you didn't like that.
I know same here and I never platinum games but on this one I basically did it without even trying to . I really liked the way they streamlined the side content . It felt like everything had purpose and some had some pretty awesome conclusions. Even the more simpler stuff like the spider bots and photography wasn’t a problem cuz it was so quick and easy.
none of the "problems" this guy's complaining about are even problems. I swear he just finds anything he can criticize about popular games and finds ways to praise unpopular ones unless they're just unanimously bad like Forspoken or Gollum. He says the slower story moments (which they created brand new mechanics for) were mindless and boring and then says the combat was overwhelming and exhausting. He says the combat feels like more of the same but doesn't even mention all the ways you can extend air-combat like bouncing enemies off the ground or how you can directional yank folks off of buildings or into walls, let alone the completely revamped ability/gadget system. He says the story plays it safe and yet the third act would be completely unexpected for people who aren't familiar with all the symbiote lore. He even says it's a headache to keep track of each spider-man's story as you switch between them- dude is absolutely tweaking. If this game confused him he'd have a terrible time playing GTA V.
That's what I'm saying😂 if you don't touch it until you beat the game I can see why but I did nearly everything by the end of my first playthrough. The only annoying bits to me were the crimes (which I had already completed 80% of the districts) and labs. No shot was it a drudge😂😂
@@juliancorredor1128yeah, but when he said it was a drudge to platinum spider-man ps4, he was fuckin tweaking😂 its only like that if you do it all at once instead of throughout your playthrough
I never expect a sequel to be a game changer, cause that’s not what most sequels are. Most sequels are suppose to be fundamental improvements from the original first and foremost, and I’d argue Spider Man 2 does that very well
this is what sequels have always been, look at arkham city from asylum, engine upgrade, more combat moves, more enemies, now there’s an open world, majority of the game is the same because of what was already great in asylum
Especially when it's one of the most commercially recognizable brands in media. Experiment with last of us or God of War Gamez not spider, those games are all about fun.
@@h.i.mcdunnough9421 also if you d9nt make a fun spiderman game then phew that's like bad bad, just look at some other spidey games in the past in the midst of all the great games? Spiderman does not need to be God of war or last of us. It's need to be a spiderman game that delivers. Make it fun while telling a great story! So far insomniac have imo.
I was never expecting a subversive sequel I'm perfectly fine with just a continuation of the story with improved graphics, traversal, combat, side quests etc. I do wish there was more to the endgame though I platinumed it in 1 weekend and have to wait for new game plus to be added
Yeah I don't really know what everyone is expecting to change. It's a sequel and a superhero game. The changes are going towards the story, with fun additions and minor updates to the moment to moment game play. The open world activities are much improved over the first two entries and the story is fun.
Being “safe” is underrated imo. Too many times games try to hard and try to do too much and try to be too different and most of the time it’s kind of a disaster or isn’t cohesive. I love when something great is found and created and then used as a foundation to build from and just make it all even better. SM2 does that perfectly imo
I didn't think the open world collectathon was a problem.. I totally missed that discourse with the previous games too! I think it's super satisfying because of how good traversal is. Make a quick stop, find a Prowler stash, and launch right back into swinging!
Regardless of anything else, the 3 hour sequence in the middle of the game leading up to and through Venom's introduction is one of the best sequences i've played in a game in a long time.
Yeah they played it pretty safe. But in defense of Insomniac Games they’re very consistent with released games 2-3 years at most. So I’ll take that deal over a revolutionary go big or home first party PlayStation studio.
releasing safe games consecutively is bad tbh, no innovation or ccreativity despite the talent that they have, and this goes for Sony as a whole, not to forget how short the game is for the price and the story is meh
@Archaoen0 I do agree. Honestly, this game to me looks like 70$ DLC or an bloated expansion not a sequel. There's been hardly any improvements and I'd argue downgrade of graphics like Peter being completely different than his original model, etc. Miles being in it feels token I don't think he's really necessary if their not gonna do Ghost Spider and the rest. Idk it's just not for me.
@@talizorah6898 definitely disagree on that whole dlc thing lol and the rest but still regardless I did find it great and fun myself 💙🙏🏻 but it’s cool to see different takes I guess 😎 but also “interesting” to say at least

Honestly the Ubisoft collectables system is perfect for Spiderman games. The ability to just fire up the game and mindlessly swing around and collect everything is perfect.
@@celestialsoldier622 seems you're the clown here... Plenty of people, friends of mine, me, and OP like to boot up Spider-Man games and just mindlessly swing around. No shame in it
About 20 hours in overall, and while I get some of your gripes, the highs are just so high for me personally. While it's not taking a bunch of crazy risks, its just what I wanted, a true next-gen Spider-man experience. This and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart (both Insomniac games funny enough) are two of the only TRUE next-gen experiences I think I've had so far for PS5, outside of MAYBE Final Fantasy 16. And if i'm being real, so far this generation, the biggest difference is really just load times and the performance of games so I wasn't expecting something too crazy. The little details really go along way for me, I love the sequences that involve both Peter & Miles together, just feels like the sequel I wanted and expected.
@@HappyDude1 ragnarok was literally developed more for ps4 and released on both consoles simultaneously 🤣 cyberpunk and burning shores (ps5-only expansion for horizon 2) are the real answers
I just played through all three games this month. The amount of changes from the last two entries is actually pretty substantial. No offense to you Luke, but not sure you really have the time to dive into the game like a normie to realize all of the things. The combat has been completely overhauled making it seemless to pull off essentially endless combos. From the powers, to the web powers, to your webshooters, to the hand to hand combat. So much more seemless. The traversal has also been completely revamped. Slingshot, websuit, the diving into a loopty loops to increase speed. Doing tricks actually has a reason now building up charge for your air jump and air dash. The side missions have so much heart this time around. Honestly, so much has changed about this game from the last two. I just got the platinum trophy this morning. I really think reviewers just don't have the luxury to dive deep enough into the games to give proper analysis. I watch these videos for entertainment, but rarely do I play a game and agree with these types of videos. It just feels like you've scratched the surface with a lot of the systems.
@@MAJINNOBU Before you had 1 suit power and you could only use one web power at a time. You had to go into a slowmo menu to switch. You couldn't even use your webshooter while using a web power. Now you have R1 to shoot webs, L1 for 4 suit powers that you can switch between (8 for miles and 10 for Peter), and R1 with 4 options for web powers that can be all used without a menu or swapping off of your webshooters. You can literally make a spiderweb in the area and stealth so much easier. That sounds pretty overhauled to me. You also have the L3+R3.
@@MAJINNOBUI forgot to mention the ability to parry into combat 😅 it all adds up to make it feel like a complete overhaul to me. The entire 3rd act compared to the last games is definitely not "playing it safe" It was like Endgame compared to Iron Man 1
My game crashed a few times but always right after a quick save so I never lost progress. The weirdest glitch I saw was after I beat the game and watched the credits when the game loaded up again miles was just a small grey cube until I switched suits
I had the exact same thing in the cutscene where they are all at aunt mays house and they go to the garage, when Miles turns up he is a floating head and when I get into Free roam he is a floating white cube.
Yeah I had some annoying graphically issues, the cube one happened to me too, but it was after I went though and bought all the suits toward the end with all my saved up resources, it just turned both of them into cubes lol
Call me petty but I still can't get over the face change Insomniac did with Peter. If they're so determined to keep their new highschool freshman face, fine, but let us have the choice between the new and the OG John Busniak.
1. why would they animate 2 faces for people who can’t get over a change. 2. they changed the face because in the first one it was so much harder to animate the face because he looked nothing like yuri, MK1 smoke and spider-man have the same face model ben jordan because it’s so much easier to help and get the best out of yuris performance they didn’t do it for no unnecessary reason
For me the colectathon elements where vastly improved from the first game 😊almost every single thing you did had something to add to the narrative or gameplay. Also I love how you can see the objectives in the world. So many times I would see a sand cloud in the distance and just go there. Felt really organic
@@henniebroodfax. I think the narratives of the side content are really engaging. It really feels like a spider-man animated show. For instance in spectacular spider-man the episodes were always split between the main narrative and a side narrative which quite frankly was addicting
Coming from someone who's replaying SM1 and always does all the collectables/city crimes, I wouldn't say they "doubled down" on the collect-a-thon... They certainly didnt get rid of the collectible-type side quests, but they certainly did reduce the volume of them. No 50+ backpacks to collect or ~100 landmarks to take pics of, or almost 20 resarch stations to complete. Instead you get a dozen pics to take, about half a dozen research stations, and a drastic quality improvement for the official side quests you find on the app. There's also still bases to clear out similar to SM1, but they also greatly reduced the volume of bases in comparison. So saying they "doubled down" on it is a stretch. I'd say they stuck to their guns, but listened to fan feedback and refined their approach by reducing volumes.
It's a solid 8 for me, the technical issues drags it down for me, and I wish the random crimes could have had some more variety, but overall when I got the Platinum at the 31 hour mark I was satisfied. And I do have to say there was one particular boss fight that actually made me feel something I don't think I've ever felt in a boss fight before. Not quite sure how to describe what I felt even if I were to spoil the fight. The fight itself wasn't that special, but what was being communicated and the voice acting sold it incredibly well. Many who played it might not even know what I'm talking about or feel that fight was generic, but for me the world around me was gone and I was completely in the moment. Both the actor's performances just drew me in.
12:39 you call it "mindless monotony," but it's those parts that make the gameplay cohesive with its narrative theme, in my opinion. The idea of "balance" runs through the entire game, and these slice of life segments are refreshing respites from the grind of the action.
Except they could have easily been made shorter cutscenes without sacrificing narrative integrity thus allowing more time for active gameplay. This game reeks of lazy effort.
Don't Buy This Game people so many issues in it: - Spanish language completely butchered for "inclusion" - ESG company blackrock has 7% of sony stocks and it shows its influence - performative pandering that they can't even get right - like the flag in Mile's room or taiyaki stand that can't even figure out Taiyaki isn't a pretzel - Mary Jowl face and androgynous body type cause femininity is seen as bad these days - Peter Parker emasculated constantly to push up Miles and Mary Jowl - Miles literally has no reason to exist - All they do with miles is remove Peter's agency in his own story, - Peter gets beat up then Miles saves him to show he's "important" when really its just devaluing Peter's ability to make miles look better - MJ stealth sections ridiculously overpowered to make her sections seem good when really its laughable - Black cat doesn't get missions, neither does wraith as playable but time for terrible MJ sections - Black cat retcon to bi and having a gf so the entire time she's manipulating Peter and causing stress in his home life for no good reason, also devaluing her care to her supposed GF they made up just now, legitimately makes her a terrible character now - Kraven and venom wasted to push more time to ESG and social politics - Mile's side missions are mediocre from helping someone ask someone out for prom to graffiti art, one is with two gay guys and the other with a deaf girl cause "inclusion over storytelling" and its so telling - fight club girl beating up a guy twice her size while he begs, just misandry in a nutshell - museum mission only there to say the funding gets taken away by EVIL WHITE GUY BUSINESS OWNER cause that's all they always do white = bad always to these writers and of course Scream fight of Peter being emasculated, insulted, while he begs for forgiveness from his "queen" (second sony game to emphasize that idea, other was GoW Ragnarok Freya speech) and she saves HERSELF cause she's a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER if u ever wonder why it feels so padded so irrelevant to what u do, remember what they make u do and the social politics to why and it is obvious just another product that kicks Peter's teeth in to push identity and social doctrine onto people
@@microwaveenthusiast7410people already complain about the combat and the wave of enemies so people would just say the game is too repetitive and even shorter.
It’s perfect for me since I work a full time job. I spend so much time collecting tech parts and doing side quests, I really have been getting to stretch the main story which has helped me digest it alot better like a tv series with episodes dropping over time. I’m level 44 and only 18/31 missions in the main story😭 I’m really getting my moneys worth and it’s perfect tbh.
Ah yes, everyone should get shorter games for more money, because you don't have the time. Despite the fact that the game isn't going anywhere, there is no time limit, and you can come back exactly where you left off whenever. I will never understand this thinking of wanting less bang for your buck, its not a race to finish a game
I think that's the problem, people have WAY too much time on their hands. If this was a casual player who came back frequently because of life activities, then they'd reconsider hoe short the game really is.
@joshuameadows4922 you can't please everyone. A hardcore player will complain a game is too short because they havent touch grass in a while but a casual player who works two jobs, go to school or have kids will appreciate a shorter game due to touching grass and doing life stuff. It goes both ways really. I will say just enjoy the game at your own pace.
To me, this game is the perfect sequel. The gameplay is much improved from the original and Morales. The traversal feels so much better now since you can get some much more speed. The story, while still not as great as the first games, had some really awesome moments, though you lacked the emotional energy the original had, especially at the end. Overall, I give this game a 8.9-9 out of ten, easily one of the best PS5 games out right now. Sure it’s not radically different from the first… but like, is it suppose to be?
@therotten6152 (SPOILER WARNING) Why I personally disagree I definitely see where you are coming from. While I like the web wings, they are a little OP. My only problems are with the story, as it IMO lacked the emotional weight of the original, the ending just didn’t really hit home like Mays death. The first post credit scene was also disappointing, as it applies that Otto is going to be a bad guy, again. Would of been a perfect time to tease The green goblin but…. Guess not. Silk is pretty cool though.
@@evanrutledge-sz4yo they quite literally tease the green goblin a few Spence before that, what Norman says to get the g serum ready asap. That the serum that turns him into green goblin
@therotten6152 Personally a good story goes a long way for my enjoyment. Obviously not every game needs to be Shakespearean, but for a game like this, where a story is a component, It’s important to me. The glide mechanic just needs to lose speed faster, or make it harder to gain height.
at 1:39 he talks about how the Arkham games get stale if you play them one after the other. To me the Arkham games are exactly what a sequel game should be, bigger and better in almost every way (story can be subjective). So what exactly does this guy expect from sequel games, and what sequel games has he gotten his standards from when it comes to how they should be handled?
Exactly. City improved on asylum by adding an open world, new gliding mechanics that felt smoother and more dynamic, vastly improved on the combat and stealth, gave us 3 more playable characters and way more side missions as well
To say that this game didn’t subvert my expectations would be a lie I didn’t expect all these crazy things to happen and genuinely paused the games at point. Sure the story felt rush slightly and few thing were expected but in the grand scheme of thing who could have thought we would have a magic wand, an agent venom, venom with wings, being able to play as venom and much more like just scream and just how strong venom is. Also then teasing carnage silk and so much more. Personal ops, it was mind blowing
Also teasing green goblin for the next game norman working on another cure for harry and notice Norman wearing green, doc ock will probably come back and will reveal peters identity to the world or to Norman to make a deal to get out of the raft for spiderman identity, also Cindy moon so yea setting up alot for the final game
@@josiahhill8655why are you sad about that? Not like she would get together with Peter again anyway. It's nice that she's happy and I don't believe that she will make more appearences at least in the next games, as her story seems over now when she's in Paris and all. Also, before someone says anything, Black Cat have been bi in comics for a long time.
I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and I'll wait for a sale to buy this game. Forbidden West, TLOU2 and Ragnarok taught me a lesson. I already know exactly what to expect from the Sony sequels. I haven't played Spider-Man 2 yet I feel like I already have. That Miles spin-off was a mistake. It took away a lot of novelty from this game. Like you said, it feels like a half step forward. A sequel to a spin-off. The same game all over again but bigger. I'm bored just thinking about it.
On a surface level it seems like just an iterative approach, but as someone who dumped countless hours into both previous games as a massive spidey fan, all of the changes here are actually pretty substantial imo. This game plays how you remember the first game playing but if you actually go back and try to play it the differences are very clear. The traversal, world, and combat all feel so much better and the side content is a lot better. I do think though that for a part 3 it would have to be almost a complete over haul in order for it to have a much bigger impact and get Insomniac that 10/10 across the board that they are hoping for. This game still has lots of issues that were present in both previous titles, the pacing can give you whiplash and the open world content could still use some work. They are so close and it sucks to have to wait an additional 5 years to see what is potentially their greatest work.
@therotten6152 as fun as I find it, I kind of agree, but if they didn’t add them it would’ve gave people even more of a right to claim it’s a dlc, I barely used it because I think spider man should mostly use his webs to get around tbh
Not every sequel has to subvert expectations or do something crazy over the top to impress and dazzle. Sometimes, a sequel can just improve on key aspects of gameplay (combat, swinging), refine areas that didn't work well (MJ missions, science experiments) and deliver a story that builds on the first.
Neither the mj missions or science experiments are a dramatic improvement are both are still bad. Outright bad. The game does nothing that hasn't been done in Arkham games almost a decade ago. It's got great visuals. That's all.
@@LordDeathAku dude, thank you. They absolutely do have to innovate when these same types of games were being made over a decade ago. There is ZERO major features to point to and say "that's an objective improvement, I can't go back to the old games the same anymore" that other games should copy. It should not be even a discussion if Arkham Knight or spiderman 2 are better games with an entire console generation and more after that game came out. That's insane. Open worlds have gotten universally better than this. Even Ubisoft ones. They dropped the ball on the open world, hard. Just a bunch of icons with repeated side missions.
The game has : Improved graphics Improved combat Improved movemen MASSIVELY IMPROVED BOSS FIGHTS Massively improved sidequests (the mechanics remain the same ofc, but a lot of the stories are pretty heartwarming, and feels like something spider-man would do) Improved collectibles (This is pretty much a hot take. But there's a reason why everybody i know is going for completion. If there's a game where I would agree to do collectibles is SM with like the best movement system there is.) In terms of story, I think people often overestimate the "plot" of SM 2018. Like does anyone remember the whole deal about Devil's Breath, Sable's involvement, etc? But from what I have played almost everything from the sequel has felt important to the story. But I do realize it can be pretty subjective. Stealth is just BAD. Even the MJ sequences are more enjoyable than spider-stealth. Gow Ragnarok and ACity are legendary becoz they could fundamentally alter from the previous games, (almost) linear to open-world games. Maybe SM2 is "safe" but I really don't know what kind of risks they could have taken.
Totally agree. Honestly, is it just me or are people, mostly reviewers, a little too negative on the game 😅? I am waiting for AngryJoe's review to start with "WheRe's tHe Co-Op?"
They could’ve ditched the infamous/lite gta style checklist open world. They went a step closer by changing fetch quests to side stories but there were very few of those moments. It’s not an rpg but it would’ve been a logical “risk” to move it toward a more rdr2 style of immersion
I don't really see how the game has Improved combat or collectables. Imo its about on par with the previous 2 games. Personally I missed the gadget wheel from the spiderman 1 lol.
@@RpgCrow I didn't. It slowed down the pace of the gameplay a lot. Also, a lot of the gadgets were OP, and if you maxed out the upgrades, you could take out a group of guys by just firing gadgets at them. I have a video of this from 2 years ago, on my channel. The gadgets they did change and put into this game, are more about crowd control and starting combos, which I prefer.
Also just to add to it, 3 playable characters each with their own movesets. I feel like GOW ragnarok felt the same as GOW 2018 with a few improvements just like Spider-Man 2 has had. Essentially the same improvements that were made to Spider-Man 2 and it becomes a negative. Trying to say it is unimpressive in Spider-Man because Miles has already had his own game and it was expected because of leaks is wild. It is still improved over the first and Miles by having them both in the same game with a story that matters. Then you throw in Venom and even if short lived it was still fun and impressive. Sequels are sequels for a reason, you don't just throw away what wasn't broke and try to reinvent the wheel. It wasn't a reboot.
This review literally sounds like a Battlefield player reviewing Call of Duty and complaining that the game isn't complex enough. Like, it's a Spider-Man game with Spider-Man villains, I don't really know what you expected the game to be, this isn't Assassin's Creed, this isn't Splinter Cell, the Ai not noticing webbed up people on the wall is about as believable as a guy crawling on walls and shooting webs from his wrist. Guy probably wants a Mary Jane standalone game. If the game isn't for you then just say it, don't review bomb it because it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do as a SUPER HERO game.
I loved this game…sure it has some flaws but you can tell it was made with a lot of heart. That side mission where you sit on the bench with the missing grandpa hit me right in the feels.
Stealth is much better. You have actual variety in the different takedowns you can do and even as far as City or asylum, the AI feel human. They can hear batarangs thrown from afar, they will turn around to see which direction things came from, they go to their fallen collegues, they get scared.
I don’t understand why this game playing it safe is necessarily a bad thing or a flaw. Maybe a little disappointing to some, but like, there’s a shit ton of games with the same type of formula and gameplay, right? And this is Insomniac’s third Spider-Man game, so why is everyone surprised it’s not that much different mechanically? I’m not trying to argue with anyone either, I’m genuinely confused
We had the same kind of games since infamous way back whenever that was released, for me it doesn’t make the game bad but they could have made a more interesting open world than just having checklists of activities so it *could* have been even better. Don’t think a game not being perfect means it’s bad
@@k--musicthe activities don’t even feel checklist for me especially when you don’t have upgrades that point you into the directions of collectathons. The spider bot and photo quests gave me a reason to re explore the map and get to know nyc 2 yrs after the first game. Robbie’s narration of photos made me appreciate taking pics and the Spider bot quest was a fun hide and seek subplot that had me pushing traversal mechanics high and low to find them all. All the side quests are varied and interesting, I was scared the 3rd time around it’d stagnate but it didn’t and that should be celebrated
@@TheCreed1217 they are literally checklists though, get x number of hunter blinds then a base, clear x number of symbiote nests, etc. for each district. Spider-Man 1 had more since the crimes were checklists too, but it’s still a lot less immersive here than games in a similar genre like rdr or gta where most encounters were unique and had some sort of story behind them beyond just recordings at the end. Ofc that doesn’t make the game bad but it would’ve been an even better world like those 10/10 games if it wasn’t that style of “go to icon on the map and do an identical activity 10 times / push triangle and get a phone call”, and the current world format is pretty much identical to the infamous games over a decade ago, but those often had player choice involved too. I liked the side quests but there were only like 10-15 of those in the entire game and again were similar to those 2008 releases. Great game but those aspects could be even better if they put more into it for 3.
It's not bad at all but it's going to be compared against every other game released this year and when compared to its peers it's just not as interesting or impressive.
Why would they change everything it’s a sequel not a reboot the new combat is great and treversal is good Mario has been making same games same mechanics cod and all of that gets a pass but spider man gets hate for it
Mario literally invented two different genres of game, they get a pass. When you make perfect games there's not much need for innovation. But Spider Man was not a perfect game, and it wasn't all that innovative either
They control the same but everything surrounding that in the new game is a complete overhaul of what came before. New animations, new character designs, new models, new artstyle, new level designs, new approach to the world map. I personally think Spiderman 2 does enough, since story is the most important part of that game to me, but you’re comparing apples and oranges here.
@@John-996 Yeah. I mean SMB basically invented the 2D platformer, SMB3 perfected it, and SM64 completely changed how 3D platforming worked and controlled. You compare the 3D platformers that came before it and the changes are massive.
The collection stuff is vastly improved, so much so it basically cut down on runtime of this game for 100% making it a tight 25 hour experience compared to about 40 hours to get the platinum in the first game because the extra 15 hours was just unnecessary open world bloat. I don't know about you, but it seems to me they heavily cut down on it
I don't think anyone was wanting a game changing spider-man sequel? The first one did the game changing, but this one just had to improve on it, and I feel like that just makes it better. Idk, maybe this comes down to taste. I absolutely love it
I mean for a supposedly next-gen PS5 only game, yeah some of us were. Because apart from the load times this looks like they could have got it working on the PS4
This age where an 8/10 is considered "mixed" is outright dystopian and needs to end. You will never be happy with a game if that's the way you see reviews.
I could see how it’s really hard being a developer, some people want you to reinvent the wheel, while others want you to stick to the tried and true if it ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality It’s also tough because being Spider-Man doesn’t really change that much, he slings webs and knocks out bad guys and gets into relationship issues with the highly annoying Mary Jane And that’s pretty much it not gonna change a lot. I do think the wingsuit idea was a bold choice, and some people are already booing that lol. So it’s hard to tear that fine line of new vs tried and true while also trying to satisfy shareholders.
@@h.i.mcdunnough9421 and how is that helping Horizon or last of us games? These western sony flagship game are basically relegated to game / tie-in shows just to boost their existing audience after a mid or worse sequel to somewhat great first game? If the cinematic games are really that well recieved , answer me one thing WHY ARE THEY RELYING ON SHOW TIE-IN TO GET AUDIENCES IN THEIR IP? cause yea these game do work in short term but after u are done with the game story , there is no reason to replay these games which have single ending and whatever choices u as the player make don't really serve any purpose so they have BASICALLY 0 REPLAY VALUE for a 70$ game which can be a deal breaker for narrative games if the ppl buy these games for narrative alone and long term gains are basically crap for these games.
@@ak-ub1ym it's called money. Do you think these companies make a certain amount of money and become satisfied lol. You think nintendo didn't want that Billion they made off the mario movie?! And oh boy the whole "only multiplayer games you can play for infinity are good" bs. News flash: movies, shows, books, music, plays are all linear forms of intertainment that have existed long before long drawn out monetized video games. If you only play a few multiplayer games but play them forever, then I play more games than you. I've played maybe 20 multiplater centric games seriously over my life but I've bought/gained access to around 1000 single player/mp games. I regularly replay many of them and I don't care if I only play a game once, I enjoyed it that one time and may play the sequel. Have fun with your never ending high value slop. Venom should also have more screen time. It's okay with what we got but he is not utilized to his fullest. Like he is the biggest of spidey's rogue's and they used him only for 1 ACT!! And Nobody has any problem with THIS!!!
@@abhisheks-ys7dz I mean yeah, it's his introduction and he wasn't showed much in the trailers for a reason, not like they said he's the villain the whole time
They literally give you fucking permanent venom abilities that will carry over probably into the next game and finally broke the status quo of a regular Spider-Man we’ve seen countless times and you think they played it safe lol love your critiques, but you’re reaching bro
I honestly watched this video and came away feeling we didn't even play the same game(s). I never had any issues with the pacing, and I never forgot what was going on in the story. I understand the AI issue, but I mean c'mon man, I'm either Miles or Pete with the symbiote so loud and proud is the way I go for those. Also, when I did a stealth mission, they DID see the guys webbed up and started looking at the ceiling and busted me "He's taking us out from above." I thought he combat was excellent and smooth, and I have also yet to have a building fail to load. I thought the story was good, I HATED the MJ missions. That was really my only gripe.
I didn’t mind the MJ missions as much this time, since she had offense. My favorite MJ mission was in the tunnel with sleeping Peter. That was awesome. I HATED the stupid graffiti mission with Miles girlfriend. I know deaf people. Why does she feel like a robot!?!
Im not sure how or where the brain dead AI thing comes from considering 100% of other games that have similar "stealth" sequences are exactly the same. I don't recall anyone complaining about brain dead AI in the Arkham games, when they don't look up at their buddies all hanging from statues in the corner of those stealth sequences. There seems to be this thing were certain people expect Sony games to massively reinvent the wheel anytime they make a sequel. Yet nobody seems to complain when Halo 2, Halo 3, Reach, ODST are all the same game but with prettier graphics or, Gears, Gears 2, Gears 3, Gears 4 are all the same game but with prettier graphics. Yet those same people lose their shit when one of those tries to be different like Halo 5, Halo Infinite, Gears 5 etc.
The hunters literally do look up and see you I’ve ran through this game twice now I can verify they even comment to “look up” the enemy factions are greatly varied in comparison to the first game
@@lutherheggs451 Dumb AI is what makes stealth games fun. The only smart AI I can remember in any game is Last of Us, but that game is a linear and curated experience designed to be very tense and dangerous. Spiderman is not in danger, he's a superhero (like most video game protagonists are). Exploiting AI is one of the most important elements of a video game being successful and fun. It's a weird criticism.
Do people not understand how sequels work anymore? I’m so lost how people think this is a “safe sequel” the story is incredibly good. The way they handled venom was incredibly good. The gameplay improvements pretty much render the previous games unplayable. The graphical and performance improvements are INSANELY good. What more do you want from a sequel?? This isn’t a reboot coming out 10 years after the first game, it’s a direct sequel. Arkham City to Arkham Knight was just better graphics, smoother gameplay, more content. So what’s the issue? I played the game a few days late and was baffled at how out of touch the reviews seem.
The story is not good. Awful plot points and diminishing peter parker feats to allow miles to be the hero doesn't make it a good story. Peter is mentor. Not a novice. MJ missions. Don't need to say much else. If you think the story of this game is good, you are delusional and should play the first game.
I really enjoyed Spider-Man 2! It definitely felt like a sequel for better or worse. It’s like TOTK. Which is just more BOTW with added abilities. That approach isn’t bad. But it is kind of disappointing with how they did it they totally could have done more. At least more skills or something. Even the added venom abilities could have been expanded on. Not many gadgets as well. They could have had more customizations. I did appreciate how they used the PS5 capabilities. I saw that with Ff16 earlier this year. People taking advantage of the PS5 is great! The PS5 runs games better than my pc at this point lmao. I feel like games could push the PS5 but like you said people really are taking the safe route. I want to have companies really push the limits of that console man. They’re close but not that close.
Two words, Arkham City it’s a sequel where they perfected combat and traversal, added gliding and made the map bigger. Also the story is painfully short. I’m not saying Spider-Man two doesn’t have issues but people pissed their pants over city and this is the exact same thing lol
My only complaints are the flickering that happens sometimes (only happens in Spider-Man games and in Hogwarts Legacy). Other than that I got one crash and three softlocks. It was sooo comic book-y which I loved. It also had some nice life of quality changes which is a big plus from me. 9.5/10 from me. Tip: do a 100% completion for some extra cool lore, easter eggs etc.
You know why this game is just another very good Spider-Man game? Because they knocked it out the park so hard in the first one, it just misses the wow factor. I mean, if they drastically changed the formula for this one, would it have even been as good? Would it have sold well? I think side content this time has a lot more variety, with a few side stories mixed in. Just swinging about to the next objective, it’s very easy to break off, dip into something, then carry on. The flow is great imo, it just wants to be played. And fortunately I love the combat system, fast, snappy and acrobatic. Exactly what Spider-Man should be.

Weird seeing people call this SM2 a safe sequel and then say God of War Ragnarok, the safest sequel ever, a masterpiece. Not that they aren't both great games, but the standard seems wildly different, and especially as Spider Man 2 adds way more as a sequel in terms of improvements to the structure and general gameplay imo. Same with Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur's Gate 3 (in relation to Divinity OS 2, not Baldur's Gate 2). They're genuinely some of the greatest games I've played this year, but they are largely iterative on past work in a lot of ways, but make smart iterations that massively improve the experience. Not that I think our standards are too high, they should be, but when people's expectations are that specific studios like Sony and Nintendo are consistently providing top tier content, is it sustainable to ask that they top themselves each time?
Spider-Man 2 being a half step is just a lie. EVERYTHING has been improved since the last two game. The remade combat system, stealth, graphics, sidequests, story, set pieces, loading times, ray tracing, bigger open world, better and faster traversal. There is only two collectibles in the game, one of them is about the city and the other expands the spider-verse lore and insomniacs SM’s place in all of it. Comparing it to Ubisoft makes no sense. Every side quest tells you something about the game world or expand on the lore or give you cool character moments. I don’t know if you’re trolling with this video or not man
Great review, one thing that has irked my nerves about reviews on this game is the complaint about the length, since when the hell is 15 hours short?? How much free time do these basement dwellers have that they are just rocketing through a 15 hour game? (25-30 for side content) miles morales had a 5 hour campaign, don’t remember a whole lot of complaints about that, sure it’s basically dlc but 15 hours is more than enough time for a story based game. Also everyone calling the game predictable, I didn’t predict like 80% of the games plot, I guess for absolute Spider-Man lore scholars this game was elementary but I had no idea about most of the plot devices in the game and the average consumer won’t either, so it seems like a very niche thing to say that it’s “predictable” but idk, 10/10 game though 👍
I think only watching the very first trailer really helped my perspective of the story. There were lots of surprises, nothing huge but enough. And the fact the game isn't grindy anymore really helped the fun factor
to be honest all of your points are not even critic points. I guess many of us hardcore spider man fans are just happy to have a new game and the black suit powers and story..
I wanna start this off by saying I don't hate Luke for the review, I'm merely pointing out things I found hypocritical when he talked about God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2. I find it hypocritical to praise GoW Ragnarok for things that Spider-Man 2 does but bash Spider-Man for it. GoW AI isn't any better and ALSO relies on throwing hoards of enemies at you if it's not a boss. Sure the AI isn't good in stealth but the AI isn't good in Ragnarok either since you can very easily abuse enemy behavior. All you have to do to do so is shoto an every every 2 seconds or so and most of the time the enemy can't do anything to youz and it gives you time for your abilities to recharge to keep them in place. You also say combat is very stagnant and samey from 2018 and Miles Morales, but Ragnarok is literally the exact same. Two sequels come out and have nearly the same combat mechanics with a few tweaks and additions. I just described combat for both SM2 and Ragnarok. That isn't a fair if one game gets a pass and the other doesn't but they both do the same thing. Again, no hate, just pointing stuff out I noticed. Anything I didn't mention I didn't have a problem with in the review/breakdown.
Its literally a sequal, no one was expecting a brand new destinct formula and if you did.. tf were you thinking? Also the shit added was all pretty insane and its a spiderman game tf were they gonna turn it into?
It's a PS5 only game, and barely anything about it feels next gen, just doesn't seem worth getting a whole new machine for, only looks slightly better than a PS4 game
I am loving the game for sure. It is an amazing Spider-Man game. I will note I have ran into the crashing at least once. At the end of the cutscene where Peter first goes into the Emily-May Foundation. I noticed there are plenty of graphical glitches as well.
Never understood this idea that a sequel needs to completely reinvent the wheel, why not build upon the base gameplay and add a completely new story that pulls us in, they did this, idk how other people feel, but I loved the story, it felt great, emotional, and I loved it, isn’t that what a sequel should do?
Most people loved Insomniac's approach to open world, I dont know where you are getting the idea that people hated it and it should change. It shouldn't, it's good.
"Spider-man 2 is a safe bet with no risk...", funny that what FF fans wanted from FF16 to not take a risk with action and stick with ATB from FF7R... people will always find something to complain abou, i wonder why 🙄
I’ve found it to be everything I’ve wanted so far, the story is top notch, I don’t understand the irritation about unlocking fast travel, why would anyone want to? Love it, yeah it could be longer, but what you do get is just 😚
I literally did not use fast travel at all in this game. Like why fast travel when you can swing around the city lol. Feels like fast travel takes away all the tension of “I need to hurry and save this person or I need to hurry and stop this person!”
Dude saying the story is safe and that they didn’t do anything different with the story. He couldn’t be far from wrong. Clearly doesn’t know anything about Spider-man when he said that. This is one of most unique version of the spider-man mythos.
The story is literally a combination of storys that have been done a million times. Harry gets venom, peter gets venom and becomes an asshole, peter rips venom off of him. Harry becomes monster venom and takes over the city by turning people into venom. That is basically spider man 3, web of shadows, multiple spider man cartoons. Nothing unexpected happened in this game, it was predictable. Now I'm not hating on this game, I liked it. But do not lie and say this story was unique.
@@stur3366 It was unique in the way it was told. From Harry being the symbiote to the way they incorporate the newer venom comic-run style of story with the whole Knull aspect and all of the other things you listed, It’s how they incorporate all those stories into one that makes it unique to Insomniac's own world. Not saying the story is perfect, but it is far from what he made it out to be.
@@unomaster6828How is it a new story when 70% of it is reused elements from other stories? The first two games were new stories that were not predictable.
@@stur3366 you missed the point. Name me a Spider-Man story that has both Peter and Miles as the protagonists, going off against Kraven and Venom, that leads to a symbiote outbreak. The first game had the same thing, where they had Otto as the villain, but it was predictable because everyone knew he was going to turn into a villain by the end.
It’s almost a masterpiece for me, what i think this game has improved on from the last two is the web swinging combat, boss fights, open world and how well written characters like Kraven and Li are but stealth was a lot better in the other games, the web gadget variety is pretty low and the story in the first game is better so this game for me at least is a 9/10
i hear you, but dude there’s always a nit-pick. if it’s not perfect, you flame the devs over it. nit-picking and blowing up those nit picks is just negative imo. unsubbed
The issue with gaming now is everybody wants to be a critic and everybody expects masterpiece gaming. Everybody wants new and fresh. Who cares. Having gamed since the 90s, lived through every PlayStation era(PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4/PS5) people just need to have fun and enjoy games. Everybody wants to be a critic. Everybody wants their opinion heard. If you like the game cool. Enjoy the shit out of it. If you don’t, also cool. Don’t buy it. End of story.
i disagree so much with these takes. There is basically only 1 collectible and its a cool one. Its part of the entire spiderverse. The rest are cool little side stories. And the first game is one of the most platinumed games. People loved it.
The game is like the previous one good but safe. It has the same same issues as the first game. What are they? Spiderman cannot wall crawl anywhere only on some parts of the building - except in cut scenes. Yep that is right spiderman cannot wall crawl very well, in the comics, movies, tv series he can cling to any surface and use that ability to great effect. In the game he cannot jump to the wall and cling there while in combat, out side of combat he cannot do that either. All he can do is a combo which is 0 and square, he only stays there for a few seconds if you do not press square quickly enough - he comes off. He cannot jump to the ceiling in combat (he cannot do that anywhere in the game), he can web zip to the ceiling in some missions, i.e. bag collecting etc, this despite the fact Spiderman can jump a lease 40 feet. For a Spiderman game his wall crawling is extremely bad as it relies on his web slinging. His fights are all liner and ground based, except for a few instances he can web grab a few enemies, but like the reviewer has said the AI is too dumb to notice even if its right in front of him. Mostly the game is taekwondo Tarzan with out the call and all ground level. Stealth is generic, you cannot web grab them from high point in non other missions, i.e. no building sites, and only in set pieces. You have some enemies not doing anything to you while you are beating their team mates- this is on hard difficulty. The game forces you into set pieces and other characters even if you do not want to. Also Spiderman 2 should be called Spiderman Morales 2 as most of the wall crawling is better with him (but he cannot do what i have explained above)and the game came really wants you to play him all the time. Also by making Morales more able it is virtually signalling etc - including him in a sequel to the first Spiderman game is lazy and woke. There are no new mechanics for the game except flying, no ability to go off the edge of a building and go down any where, Spiderman should be able to do this. Also you cannot go to your apartment or home except in cut scaenas. its the only game that you cannot do that which is very bizarre. One thing i noticed in Spiderman 2 is that education is encouraged to be missed - its a big play in Morales. This is extremely bad as a lot of kids will be playing the game. The Action is great, story ok, but like a lot of companies having a big hit on your hand is a curse as one becomes complacent and arrogant. I suspect any dlc and Spiderman 3 will be the same. Also for an open world game around level 16-18 things do become very limited or lacking. It picks up after you do the main mission - again hardly open world. Also no proper supervillains of note, sure we have sandman, scorpion etc but they are very limiting. Dr Octopuses is ok (Spiderman 1 et al). The fighting is really a bunch of kicks, no throws except for using webs, not many punches - nothing like in batman etc. I suspect insomniac will go the way of the dodo, just like the makers of cyberpunk, starfield etc. All produced great games once and they forgot the core values, and people get bored with the same rubbish. Even a big map does not make up for the safe feeling of the game. Yes the map is great, Brooklyn is lovely, and the graphics are top notch, but like i have said it as if 2018 just happen all over again with the same stuff. By the way i did not buy Spiderman 1 till over a year after it was released. I was so fed up with over hyped games and their fan boys pushing their scams. Hell i did not even buy ps4 for years. Now i have ps4 and ps5 consoles, the latter is very good but under used in terms of titles but it no way beats the pc in the graphics department. Developers should not be charging $60 for a game that is the same as the previous 5 year old game. By way i di not buy Spiderman 2 till this week, 3 months after release. I did not even know it was released nor did i care. Why I just knew it would be the same and i was right. I am a big Spiderman fan.
All these new first party single player Sony exclusives that have come out in the last 5-10 years feel like movie simulators. Half the game is cutscenes & other half is collecting useless items & ticking off a checklist like Ubisoft games They should really bring back Japan Studios. Creativity seems to be dead in modern day gaming studios/devs. They use the same shitty formula in all games (GOW,Horizon,Spiderman,TLOU, Ghost of Tsushima etc)
I personally enjoyed my time from the beginning to the platinum. I get what you are saying, but for some one who don’t have time for an Ubisoft game and have not touch one since AC origins, it did not felt tiresome, it just gave me an excuse to swing around the city some more 😅. I do think there is a few stuff that I did not like: suit distribution, not being able to change time of day etc…

@@marcusclark1339 I think you need to go outside more bud, it is probably not healthy for your mental state to get this worked up over a piece of media.
I was also surprised by the lack of innovation. Combat and swinging did feel like they got the needed tune ups, but side content and stealth feel like they got left behind for some reason.
Despite everything they've added to the formula this game still feels unfinished/rushed to me, similarly to Cyberpunk (not nearly at that level of course). There's so many small things missing for no reason that were present in the first two games. - The police literally doesn't exist, Spider-Man goes "oh no, a high speed chase" but no one is following them - They removed the weather/time of day selection from the other games, you are stuck at midday once you finish the story - end game Peter is a complete mess with all the different power options he has, you can select the spider arm powers but there's no way to get rid of the white goo animations (which remains white even if you switch to the black suit) - and viceversa - Most of the side quests seem to just end abruptly, and so do the unlockables (there's no way we were supposed to get *that* suit for max level Peter) - overall, the city somehow feels more dead than in the previous game
For me, when making a sequel for a game the burden of innovation is much higher when the previous entry was not as well received as the first Spider-man game. The lack of innovation especailly with the open world is a negative to keep in mind, but my experience with the game has been nothing short of spectacular.
I think think they might have put themselves into a narrative corner because of the miles morales game. Because that game made you so powerful using the bio electrical venom abilities the game had to make peter have something to make him just as powerful ||of course that was the symbiote, but by the end of the game he has lost it and replaced it with the anti-venom suit which is equally as powerful but I don’t think that works since nobody wants to permanently use that. they bought a spider-man game, they wanna be in the red and blue.|| I think insomniac knew this too so that’s why ||they had peter take a break to be better parker at the end but no one is gonna buy the next game without peter especially when this game sold itself on the “be better together” motto and we know the miles morales game was less successful than the first. and the after credit scene with cindy moon (silk in the comics if you didn’t know) becoming miles’ step sister feels like too much. silk in the comics is a cool character but it feels like too much for this series to have a 3rd spider person. plus they would need to make her feel unique and powerful and they struggled to do that with 2 spider men let alone 3 spider people
Honestly if they got rid of miles completely and mj randy savage stealth section while also having a better story, I might consider buying it. As a spiderman fan this game ain't it for me personally. First one was by far way better though I still got issues with that one.
I loved this game but my only complaint was the wave problem, like often im playing the game and then i beat them for a cutscene to show up and then end with the camera panning to another group of enemies
This is my first Spider-Man game and I only bought it because of how great the gameplay trailers looked. I’m really happy with it so far. The gameplay is super satisfying and I’m using the waves of enemies to practice combat my skills. The only thing you made me concerned about is run time and the fact that once the story is over, the game feels dead. For 70$, that’s something I can see myself being disappointed with but for now, I’m loving it! Even with the occasional glitch
i disagree with the side content “collectathon”. it is BY FAR more streamlined than 2018s game. not to mention that most seem to have ‘weight’ to them, often giving a cool suit or a classic marvel foreshadow. 2018 really just had you take out all the fisk/demon towers and all you got was a phone call from mj saying ‘good job pete, you showed em this time’. hell there was like 60 backpacks to collect in 2018 and you only needed 22 spiderbots in 2023 across a map twice the size? and they doubled down on the collectathon?
Combat is better no doubt. But felt the story was an insane drop off from Spider-Man 1. Zero pacing, way too many emotional beats which dilute the highs of the first story (Aunt Mays death or Doc Ock reveal/fight). Also the decision to make the symbiote an alien instead of not going down the Ultimate Spider-Man route (a medical exo suit) was incredibly disappointing. Everything felt rushed. Was not a fan and hope the sequel is much cleaner with any green goblin arc.
A big complaint for me was how unmemorable the soundtrack was for this game compared to Spider-Man PS4 or even Miles Morales’ game. Felt like they mixed a lot of the old music and just added dubstep “wubbs” for all the bad guys
I think the reason myself and others aren't impressed is because the story is so predictable. Plus the last 10 missions is basically the entire plot of web of shadows. I had no idea where the story was going in the first game or the miles morals game. The cost does not equal the quality of the game, a 12 hour story for $70. Those are my only complaints.

Spoilers: Both agree and disagree on this one, great points raised but also don’t agree with some. Finished and got the platinum trophy at 19 hours which is pretty quick considering most triple A games take much longer. First one took me around 25 hours. I will agree that the first game was a bit of a slog especially the completing crimes in each district trophy. Collectables overall were pretty easy to get this time around, the hardest being the spider bots but they were still pretty easy considering the massive glow they produce. Towards the end of the story I found that I only had a few things left to do. Personally would have loved to have seen more story based side missions with a bigger emphasis on spidey villains pretty much like the flame missions. Instead of collecting a bunch of sandman memories have a side story based around him and his family, etc There wasn’t as much of an emphasis on stealth sections as the first one which is a shame because I thought the web line was a really neat feature. Agree with the AI, hopefully will be improved in the next one as it’s looking like Silk will be a playable character and it would be cool to have her as the main stealth based character. Although improved they need to get rid of the Mary Jane sections overall 😂 Fantastic sequel and excited for what comes next. But first…. Wolverine 😎
I really like Luke, he seems to be fair with his views. I disagree on the point of Insomniac producing a safe or predictable story. If a creator tries to do something a bit different with a Comic book character, the cry babies come out saying how it's not EXACTLY like the comics... You can't make everyone happy. I'm not overly familiar with the comics so it was a surprise to me. As far as I'm aware, in the comics, Peter Parker always dies to allow Miles to takeover. Also, Harry has never been Venom in the comics, Norman is always portrayed as an uncaring father, and Kraven has never been seen on a screen before. I'm sure there's more. The 'best, worst masterpiece, terrible' will always be subjective. In my view, this is my favourite game of all time. I've had so much fun with it. The story Insomniac has told is my favourite Spider-man story told out of all the Spider-Man stories. This game in my view is a masterpiece
I agree. I mean I could academically tear some aspects of the game apart but I just don't want to. It's too fun, charming and heartwarming. Along with being the only game this year you could actually call "next gen"
I definitely had more bugs than I expected, it was mostly fine though. I will say, aside from a couple things toward the end of the game, I could have told you exactly how the game was gonna go plot wise just based on the trailers alone. But I think that’s totally fine, I think the presentation was enough to hold it up for me. Aside from the Coney Island bit, I thought the pacing was very good for how short I heard the game was going to be. Not game of the year, but as a die hard spidey fan, I enjoyed what we ended up getting.
And to be clear, when I say review scores have been "mixed" I mean in the context of them aiming for a 10/10. Some scores are that high, and others are down in the 7/8 range. The overall reviews are all overwhelmingly positive, we're just debating whether it's "great" or "a masterpiece."
Thank you for watching!

As for complaints (Spoilers)
I felt as though Peter was extremely nerfed numerous times throughout the story simply to help the plot but it really demeans him as a 10+ year spiderman.
Yh anti venom was rlly nerfed aswell
Agreed. Also disliked the fact that we didn’t get a tag team battle with miles/peter/venom

He says the story plays it safe and yet the third act would be completely unexpected for people who aren't familiar with all the symbiote lore. this is what sequels have always been, look at arkham city from asylum, engine upgrade, more combat moves, more enemies, now there’s an open world, majority of the game is the same because of what was already great in asylum
all of a sudden people are expecting sequels to all be like gow 3 to 4, when that was a purposeful change of direction for a different story

I agree with mostly everything u said but let’s be honest the combat wasn’t completely overhauled lol

@@henniebroodfax. I think the narratives of the side content are really engaging. It really feels like a spider-man animated show. For instance in spectacular spider-man the episodes were always split between the main narrative and a side narrative which quite frankly was addicting
Nah, collecting items was better in the first game.

- performative pandering that they can't even get right
- like the flag in Mile's room or taiyaki stand that can't even figure out Taiyaki isn't a pretzel
- Mary Jowl face and androgynous body type cause femininity is seen as bad these days
- Peter Parker emasculated constantly to push up Miles and Mary Jowl
- Miles literally has no reason to exist
- All they do with miles is remove Peter's agency in his own story, - Peter gets beat up then Miles saves him to show he's "important" when really its just devaluing Peter's ability to make miles look better

- Black cat retcon to bi and having a gf so the entire time she's manipulating Peter and causing stress in his home life for no good reason, also devaluing her care to her supposed GF they made up just now, legitimately makes her a terrible character now
- Kraven and venom wasted to push more time to ESG and social politics
- Mile's side missions are mediocre from helping someone ask someone out for prom to graffiti art, one is with two gay guys and the other with a deaf girl cause "inclusion over storytelling" and its so telling
- fight club girl beating up a guy twice her size while he begs, just misandry in a nutshell
- museum mission only there to say the funding gets taken away by EVIL WHITE GUY BUSINESS OWNER cause that's all they always do white = bad always to these writers
and of course Scream fight of Peter being emasculated, insulted, while he begs for forgiveness from his "queen" (second sony game to emphasize that idea, other was GoW Ragnarok Freya speech) and she saves HERSELF cause she's a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER

If this was a casual player who came back frequently because of life activities, then they'd reconsider hoe short the game really is.
your point doesn't support your claim
@joshuameadows4922 you can't please everyone. To me, this game is the perfect sequel. The gameplay is much improved from the original and Morales. The traversal feels so much better now since you can get some much more speed. The story, while still not as great as the first games, had some really awesome moments, though you lacked the emotional energy the original had, especially at the end.
Well you don't have to wait five years wolverine will be out in about 2.
@therotten6152 as fun as I find it, I kind of agree, but if they didn’t add them it would’ve gave people even more of a right to claim it’s a dlc, I barely used it because I think spider man should mostly use his webs to get around tbh

@@WILLINGLYWILD really? That would be dope! Wouldn't surprise me, insomniac are wizards.
@therotten6152So they add an optional way of traversing the world and to you that makes the traversal worse? Lol ok
That's all.
Thats not an excuse. Isn't this supposed to be next gen? What a joke imo
The game has :
Improved graphics
Improved combat
Improved movemen
MASSIVELY IMPROVED BOSS FIGHTS
Massively improved sidequests (the mechanics remain the same ofc, but a lot of the stories are pretty heartwarming, and feels like something spider-man would do)
Improved collectibles (This is pretty much a hot take. But there's a reason why everybody i know is going for completion. If there's a game where I would agree to do collectibles is SM with like the best movement system there is.)
In terms of story, I think people often overestimate the "plot" of SM 2018.
I feel like nowadays people are just really trying to find issues
I loved this game…sure it has some flaws but you can tell it was made with a lot of heart. That side mission where you sit on the bench with the missing grandpa hit me right in the feels.
Fans: - "We hate playing as MJ".
Insomniac (probably) - "Here. Have some more MJ".
The Batman Arkham games are still better
Stealth is much better. You have actual variety in the different takedowns you can do and even as far as City or asylum, the AI feel human. They can hear batarangs thrown from afar, they will turn around to see which direction things came from, they go to their fallen collegues, they get scared.
Ok then, based on this Baldurs Gate 3 is GOTY.
It was stiff competition this yearbut overall BG3 delivered maximally for thier genre
@@k--music2 of the side quest lines lead to bossfights and the other few lead to a fine little side mission. Hinting at the next game or dlc
@@atiredclicheThats what people do not seem to get why certain games get so much priase.
You obviously haven't played Mario. Compare the new 2d Mario to the last one. Night and day difference compared to this game.
All of your reviews just sound like you were having a bad day, and were forced to play the game
The collection stuff is vastly improved, so much so it basically cut down on runtime of this game for 100% making it a tight 25 hour experience compared to about 40 hours to get the platinum in the first game because the extra 15 hours was just unnecessary open world bloat. I don't know about you, but it seems to me they heavily cut down on it
Definitely. I much prefer it now.
It is fucking insane to that some people think 8 is just good when 7 should mean good. Mixed would be a 5 out of 10.
I could see how it’s really hard being a developer, some people want you to reinvent the wheel, while others want you to stick to the tried and true if it ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality
It’s also tough because being Spider-Man doesn’t really change that much, he slings webs and knocks out bad guys and gets into relationship issues with the highly annoying Mary Jane
And that’s pretty much it not gonna change a lot.
I do think the wingsuit idea was a bold choice, and some people are already booing that lol. So it’s hard to tear that fine line of new vs tried and true while also trying to satisfy shareholders.

Two words, Arkham City
it’s a sequel where they perfected combat and traversal, added gliding and made the map bigger.

What could they have done to make it less "safe?" Just curious to see all your "brilliant" ideas 🤡
I think only watching the very first trailer really helped my perspective of the story. There were lots of surprises, nothing huge but enough.
And the fact the game isn't grindy anymore really helped the fun factor
Personally disagree I thing there were huge surprises that even the other trailers don’t show and I watched all of them
to be honest all of your points are not even critic points.

I liked the first game which is why I wanted a sequel. I want more of what I liked not some radical new gameplay system.
Its a completely new story that isn’t adapting things 1 to 1.
Spiderman 2 side missions were way better than the first game
It’s almost a masterpiece for me, what i think this game has improved on from the last two is the web swinging combat, boss fights, open world and how well written characters like Kraven and Li are but stealth was a lot better in the other games, the web gadget variety is pretty low and the story in the first game is better so this game for me at least is a 9/10
i hear you, but dude there’s always a nit-pick. if it’s not perfect, you flame the devs over it. nit-picking and blowing up those nit picks is just negative imo. unsubbed

If you like the game cool. Enjoy the shit out of it. If you don’t, also cool. Don’t buy it. End of story.
This really comes off as if you didn't like the game that much despite the title saying it's great. I've heard a lot more complaints than praises.
i disagree so much with these takes.
Half the game is cutscenes & other half is collecting useless items & ticking off a checklist like Ubisoft games
They should really bring back Japan Studios.
I do think there is a few stuff that I did not like: suit distribution, not being able to change time of day etc…
so many issues in it:
- Spanish language completely butchered for "inclusion"
- ESG company blackrock has 7% of sony stocks and it shows its influence
- performative pandering that they can't even get right
- like the flag in Mile's room or taiyaki stand that can't even figure out Taiyaki isn't a pretzel
- Mary Jowl face and androgynous body type cause femininity is seen as bad these days
- Peter Parker emasculated constantly to push up Miles and Mary Jowl
- Miles literally has no reason to exist
- All they do with miles is remove Peter's agency in his own story, - Peter gets beat up then Miles saves him to show he's "important" when really its just devaluing Peter's ability to make miles look better
- MJ stealth sections ridiculously overpowered to make her sections seem good when really its laughable
- Black cat doesn't get missions, neither does wraith as playable but time for terrible MJ sections
- museum mission only there to say the funding gets taken away by EVIL WHITE GUY BUSINESS OWNER cause that's all they always do white = bad always to these writers
and of course Scream fight of Peter being emasculated, insulted, while he begs for forgiveness from his "queen" (second sony game to emphasize that idea, other was GoW Ragnarok Freya speech) and she saves HERSELF cause she's a STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER
if u ever wonder why it feels so padded so irrelevant to what u do, remember what they make u do and the social politics to why and it is obvious
just another product that kicks Peter's teeth in to push identity and social doctrine onto people
@@marcusclark1339 I think you need to go outside more bud, it is probably not healthy for your mental state to get this worked up over a piece of media.
@@marcusclark1339Damn what did it do to you 😂
I was also surprised by the lack of innovation. Combat and swinging did feel like they got the needed tune ups, but side content and stealth feel like they got left behind for some reason.
They did buddy. What side content would you add please tell me
Despite everything they've added to the formula this game still feels unfinished/rushed to me, similarly to Cyberpunk (not nearly at that level of course). There's so many small things missing for no reason that were present in the first two games.
- The police literally doesn't exist, Spider-Man goes "oh no, a high speed chase" but no one is following them
- They removed the weather/time of day selection from the other games, you are stuck at midday once you finish the story
- end game Peter is a complete mess with all the different power options he has, you can select the spider arm powers but there's no way to get rid of the white goo animations (which remains white even if you switch to the black suit) - and viceversa
- Most of the side quests seem to just end abruptly, and so do the unlockables (there's no way we were supposed to get *that* suit for max level Peter)
- overall, the city somehow feels more dead than in the previous game
This notion of "sequel game must be a big leap of revolution from the previous installment" is just plain wrong or in other word: unsustainable.
For me, when making a sequel for a game the burden of innovation is much higher when the previous entry was not as well received as the first Spider-man game. The lack of innovation especailly with the open world is a negative to keep in mind, but my experience with the game has been nothing short of spectacular.
I didnt really have a problem with the game, it was really fun, only downside is that it was so short 😞
God of war literally played it safe like no other, it was literally the same game as the last. And everyone was so quick to give it a 10😂
Very true i has issues with that as well.
I want the old insomniac back. Tired of them being known for just spiderman games.
What's a game they made you can recommend?
@@dustingrimmmagic1067 resistance, any and all of the classic ratchet and clank games, sunset overdrive, Spyro…
@@Astro_Vagabond thanks for the recommendations!
Just Cause 3 is still the best Grappling Hook+Wingsuit game ever.
I think think they might have put themselves into a narrative corner because of the miles morales game. Because that game made you so powerful using the bio electrical venom abilities the game had to make peter have something to make him just as powerful ||of course that was the symbiote, but by the end of the game he has lost it and replaced it with the anti-venom suit which is equally as powerful but I don’t think that works since nobody wants to permanently use that. they bought a spider-man game, they wanna be in the red and blue.|| I think insomniac knew this too so that’s why ||they had peter take a break to be better parker at the end but no one is gonna buy the next game without peter especially when this game sold itself on the “be better together” motto and we know the miles morales game was less successful than the first. and the after credit scene with cindy moon (silk in the comics if you didn’t know) becoming miles’ step sister feels like too much. silk in the comics is a cool character but it feels like too much for this series to have a 3rd spider person. plus they would need to make her feel unique and powerful and they struggled to do that with 2 spider men let alone 3 spider people
You know you can change the suit right?
@@momulla5554 I talking from a narrative level. No one wants the canon suit to be the anti venom suit that’s stupid
@@orbakun not sure why it’s stupid but it’s purely subjective
What the hall you mean safe? Jesus Christ
I actually gotta agree, the collectibles were way worse than in the other 2 games. But I love the main story (except for the MJ missions)
Honestly if they got rid of miles completely and mj randy savage stealth section while also having a better story, I might consider buying it.
As a spiderman fan this game ain't it for me personally. First one was by far way better though I still got issues with that one.
People have become too critical nowadays you can't please them I guess
I found better reviews for the game in the comment section
I loved this game but my only complaint was the wave problem, like often im playing the game and then i beat them for a cutscene to show up and then end with the camera panning to another group of enemies
100% Agree.......I found I got bored in some sections/missions because it just felt all the same.
And also copy/paste objectives were not great. Collectibles are fine, but I don’t want this many copy paste crap
This sequel is just as awesome as any story sequel out there, not sure why people are not as impressed with it.
Everyone is actually, the game has a 90 from critics and a 9 from fans and it sold 2.5 mill in 24 hrs.
Was short but how can u have expected the story to play out how it did I completely dissagree
@@stur3366tell me at least 3 things that were predictable (and that were not previously stated or hinted in the trailers).
@@jesusoctaviosalgadopelayo2401Peter turning into an asshole, venom wanting to take over the city, miles saving peter, mj turning into venom, kraven killing the villains, Harry killing kraven and anti venom.
idk why you say great in the title, you come off as not enjoying or liking the game all that much
Spoilers: Both agree and disagree on this one, great points raised but also don’t agree with some.
Instead of collecting a bunch of sandman memories have a side story based around him and his family, etc
There wasn’t as much of an emphasis on stealth sections as the first one which is a shame because I thought the web line was a really neat feature. Agree with the AI, hopefully will be improved in the next one as it’s looking like Silk will be a playable character and it would be cool to have her as the main stealth based character. Although improved they need to get rid of the Mary Jane sections overall 😂
Fantastic sequel and excited for what comes next. But first….
