Lots of people comparing it to Unity or Origins, but I think we have to be realistic about what Mirage is.
Unity was supposed to be the "next-gen" AC game. Ubisoft completely rebuilt their engine and built new tools for Unity, a true AAAA effort.
Likewise, Origin was a result of a hiatus from AC after the failure of Syndicate. Again, Ubisoft completely rebuilt their engine to enable the more open-world RPG style of game that was used for Odyssey and Valhalla, another true AAAA effort.
Mirage is not that. It is a side project (DLC) that was expanded into a full length game. They simply used the AC Valhalla engine and with a more AA budget (maybe AA+) attempted to polish out the rough edges. Parkour was tightening, city design was sharpened, density increased, tighter sound design, different mission designs, etc. Given that, I think it was a valliant effort.

I don't like the feeling of melee, I'd prefer slower attacks with higher impact, hitting an enemy with two sword for it to ignore it and keep attacking feels bad for me. I think in Valhalla can be acceptable because RPG numbers and all that but here, i would prefer a different approach

The level of excitement when I saw Arno and Elise playing around as kids in Rogue was like something else. I guess continuing the lineage or at least making spinoffs from there would be the real "back to roots" for me.

TLDR: AC Mirage plays like an Assassin’s Creed game from 10-15 years ago, and while some will find that boring or lackluster, fans of those original games will likely enjoy the trip down memory lane. Mirage does what it set out to do. It’s far from a masterpiece, but it’s a good time for old school Assassin’s Creed fans, especially at the lower price point.

Incorrect. This game is nowhere near the AC games of old. The parkour is absolute ass, no side ejects, no back ejects, no ledge catch, no parkour roll, that's just not old AC. The combat is pretty much the same as Valhalla with a few tweaks. It's still plays like Valhalla. The characters' movement is just like Valhalla. The parry animation is always the same. That's just not old AC. The game still looks more like a fantasy game instead of having a more gritty and grounded look. Weapons, attire, environment, it all looks much more fantasy inspired. That's just not old AC. This game absolutely failed in the one thing that it promised, a return to the roots, and it doesn't deserve a purchase.

From the very early announcement of the game, the key ad phrase was "bringing back the old school AC games" which reminded me of Call of Duty's "back to boots on the ground" motto.
There was no talk of "innovating on the old formula" or "improving upon them, gameplay-wise or narratively" rather, it's just going back. And Mirage looks exactly like that: just going back.

I don't think the RPG Creed will ever go away but there was definitely strong fatigue and displeasure of that formula by the end of Valhalla's run. Especially given the next game is in Japan, I don't see them just trotting out another Odyssey/Valhalla clone and expecting people to be happy. They kind of boxed themselves into actually having to make an Assassin's Creed RPG because nobody is going to play as a ninja who sucks at parkour and isn't stealthy.

I’m about 6 or 7 hours in and really enjoying it. It’s giving me what I want as an AC fan.
City with parkour focused landscape as opposed to massive space of fields and rocks ✅
Stealth focused, I’d say more stealth focused than 1-4 no joke because you could so easily beat people in combat in the OG games whereas if 3 guards show up here I might actually just dip ✅
OG mechanics like bureaus and notoriety back ✅
Listen, it’s not the full fledged reboot that we hope is coming, but why did ANYONE and I mean ANYONE expect it to be? It was a Valhalla DLC, it’s obviously running on the same engine which brings a lot of the same feel, but I think they’ve done a good job in making it feel faster in movement and stealthier whilst essentially being a love letter (their words) to AC1 even adding the iconic filter that tinges the game blue. I’m happy for the £40 I spent.

I disagree. I think it's likely that all the AC games that have been announced recently are smaller-scale ones, which shows they're open to trying new things. I also think that there is room in the franchise for both the smaller city-based stuff as well as the more open-map ones. either can be stealth or action, and either can be RPG or not.
I think what matters is that they put out well-planned games set in interesting locations at interesting points in time, with solid storytelling and characters - and minimal bugs. what format the game is doesn't matter all that much. Sure, I hated Valhalla too, but Origins and Odyssey are fucking brilliant. same goes for the older AC games - most of us can agree that Unity is overlooked and the Ezio games are good, but not many people love AC 3 or 1 the most. it's not the formula that matters.

The side quests were so rich that I actually enjoyed playing them more than the main campaign plus all the little things you could do like completing locations around the map made it the best to me. This game is nothing more than a cash grab. Those praising ‘it’s going back to its roots’ are you forgetting stealth was still viable in every recent AC game? No one was forcing you go in loud. They have done absolutely nothing new here, all the ‘new features’ can be found in past games, the throwing knives, the blow darts etc. have all be seen before. No AI improvements, no graphical improvements, and The city looks like any other Middle Eastern set past game like Ac1 or revelations. The distraction feature is straight from those games too. There’s still silly super powers too like the chain assassination, so it isn’t really going back to its roots.
The fact you’re so complimentary to this lazy, uninspired, glorified DLC and so critical of something like Starfield which actually tries new things, is quite funny.

I had high expectations regarding Mirage's "back to the roots" approach and I can't deny I'm disappointed with how shallow the roots picked by Ubisoft are, but I think I'll still give this game a chance as it appears to be the best, most assassin's creed-ish thing we've got since Syndicate. A tiny step in the right direction for the series, which for the past 6-7 years has been constantly cutting away all the stuff that made it so fun and unique in the first place. I hope Ubisoft keeps rebuilding this franchise instead of further turning it into a generic open-world action wanna-be-rpg.

I fell in love with ASC and played them all because of the historical content, Story, beautiful cities and landscapes, and don't forget it was one of the first games that had a parkour system where you could climb anything in the world. I've felt a part of each historical time period and learned always something new in every single game. Thx for that ubisoft 👏

@@sumstuff6956. I completely agree the new RPG witcher 3 clones like origins and odyssey were not real AC games but Mirage is a true to the core hidden ones, assassin experience. The parkour is actually good in this game, it’s definitely the best it’s been since Unity, and just all around a true stealth focused AC game. If your a fan of the OG games like me you will know what I mean when I say Mirage is a true AC game this time and it’s fucking amazing.

  • @cynic5581
    @cynic5581 Год назад +1

If you are on the fence I would pass. I’ve played all the AC games since launch. I just got done replaying assassins creed 1 and 2. And previous to that was Odyssey Orgins and Valhalla.
Mirage FOR ME takes most of the worst bits from each and combines them. So yes in some aspects it’s a throw back to earlier AC titles but not in a good way all the time.
A lot of the parkour feels clunky, worse than Odyssey and Orgins but more similar to Valhalla. Remember when your character would on rare occasions throw themselves off a building negating the jump you were going for? Ya that seems to happen a bit more often.
Your “eagle vision” isn’t a ping it’s something that is on or off which is why you see reviewers playing with it on. It’s visually ugly and hard to navigate with a key bind on console that requires you to stop movement to toggle it.
The melee combat will occasionally “freeze” so you’ll be pressing light attack but not doing anything. But the combat in general feels disconnected and your light and heavy attacks are more akin to flailing wildly than precise strikes, you can get a sense of this by watching the video. Strikes that hit “feel” like a miss, hard to explain. Again feels more like Valhalla than games prior which had “a flow”.
Notoriety mechanic is obnoxious. Now I’m still early in the game so maybe this changes but even stealth kills raise notoriety and it stays with you. To rephrase that, guards across the entire map know you stealthy killed someone….HOW?! So you spend time finding and tearing down wanted posters. The entire mechanic is a slog for me. Maybe it’s only like that on hard mode, I haven’t tried normal or easy.
So if parkour, combat and stealth is “meh” what is left?
Honestly the best thing I can say about it is it’s better than Valhalla. I picked up Orgins for 5 bucks a while back which Ubisoft gave a 60 fps patch to on console, I feel it’s a better game in nearly every aspect, just get that.

They were gorgeous, stunning games that were both fun to play, I sunk 80 hours into Valhalla as well, even though I had really mixed feelings about that game. Im looking forward to jumping into Mirage after I wrap up my playthrough of Phantom Liberty. The only caveat is, I really dislike Basim as a character, so I dont know how I'll feel playing with him as a protagonist.

What a petty, ridiculous game. Absolutely pathetic. This review was one reason I decided to buy it. I'm beyond disappointed and it has nothing to do with hype or skepticism. This has to be the worst Assassin's Creed game ever made. Valhalla, a game I'm not a fan of, has major problems but at least the game was made, structured to be played in the setting it was placed in with the gameplay it was going for, no matter whether it was boring or too big (which it was). In Mirage they are trying to go back to "old-style" AC and have completely failed in my opinion. Just the parkour alone is horrendous. They've striped down the mechanics from Unity, as they have done from Origins, to a point where there is no sense of accuracy or direction and the city it-self, in Mirage, is structured in a way where the parkour, mechanically doesn't work or feel right with the gameplay style they're going for as well, which is stealth. And this is just about some of the mechanical/gameplay choices of the game, not to mention the terrible graphics for a 2023 release game and hilariously poorly-written script. Instant regret; I can't wait for the rating system to get up and running on the PS store...

I just hope they keep making games like this in between the larger scale, modern design games. This is a good throwback, so far I think it's better than Rogue, and other smaller scale titles in the series and it's a good foundation for this team to improve on.

Will depend on how much it sells. Valhalla sold extremely well, so if Mirage isn’t a big seller they may just stick to the bigger games. We know Red is coming, but I’m hoping for an Aztec or Maya based AC in the future.

  • @chrisperry4014
    @chrisperry4014 11 месяцев назад +1

7:25 this is fine, but maybe you are looking at it from a really unflattering angle. It, in my opinion, is in no way supernatural. Its animations are clearly animus-based, which is what the original games were really focused on. For me, if you are able to assassinate 10 enemies (with the hidden ones armor fully upgraded) for a guaranteed 5 assassinations (with a fully upgraded phantom tree) is not immersion breaking for me and really shouldn’t be for you. To me, it’s a reward for playing strategically. If you’ve managed to take out that many enemies it makes sense to me that basin could easily take out the rest in quick succession without actually having to do that as a player. Sort of a skip-forward in the scene where the heroes kick down the door to the bad guy’s office with the body of a guard. The combat wasn’t important, it was the story beat of “we are here and you are fucked”. For me, the ability is not at all broken, it’s just lets you skip to the important bits that further the story and takes quite a bit of investment and planning to actually use effectively.
I’ve played on the hardest difficulty since launch and I agree that the stealth is really easy, but using your environment creatively makes it more fun and all of the tools are broken, not just smoke bombs. The fact that you can oneshot anyone with an assassination means that nothing is really broken, that’s just the core mechanic of the game. It’s really easy to upgrade your tools as well, so you almost always have a dozens of consumables to use as well as your assassination button. They are only there to let players have a variation in play-style, and being skeptical about that is just silly. You even say so yourself that “it’s just my preference”, so then why bring it up at all as if it was an issue. It isn’t a problem that needs to be criticized if you are going to immediately follow up that critique with that.
P.S. Having an opinion or a preference is not skepticism. Skepticism is being unsure of what is being presented as truth. In this case, it’s a game, which is art, which is subjective, so what you are actually practicing is critique.
P.P.S I see you using the prince of Persia weapons, which are literally the only mythological/fantasy:”ungrounded” weapon. You constantly contradict yourself in these videos and don’t even realize it man. I really wish you would realize how hypocritical you can be when you practice your “skepticism”. You could have at least changed the appearance of the dagger (which I hated bc it looks so out of place) if you wanted to hide your hypocrisy tho.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in budget and all that is offered to the consumer is the exact same thing we were playing 15 years ago. The gaming industry is in such a fallen state where people willingly shell out $50 for games like this. Starfield was the same exact way. Nothing new, just the same things from the past 20 years reskinned into a different location. What a shame.

It's easy to say it ressemble the old Assassin's Creed when you decide to ignore all the new mechanics that doesn't makes this like the old Assassin's Creed 🤔
It's the same code as Valhalla, but they just removed features to push towards the stealth skills, you still have your eagle, you can teleport kill, you can dissapear anytime, the world is filled with pointless things to do, you have horses, there is a store, etc..
This is a DLC that they used to fill the void between major releases.
I'd avoid this game because it just shows them that we are willing to accept less while still pushing their microtransactions to us.
