I take my PSS A50 to play outdoors. It fits in a bag. It is lightweight. 4 AA replaceable rechargeable 🔋lasts 8 hours. More than enough to play few evenings. Sound quality is great. In old days people traveled with spinets & clavichords. Yamaha is best, I want to get new SHS.
Just bought one. Cheapest keytar in market n reminisce the old shs10. Play thru function is excellent for jamming along. I also hook it up to soft synth like Reason and you get endless sounds on it! Lightweight and cool looking but too bad it doesn’t have any funky colours like yellow or blue or green. Come on it’s 80s vibes !!
It hits me now that one could create his/her OWN chord track, let the tracker render it and then you could improvise over your own stuff, without making mistakes. I don't have it but now I would like to test it badly, lol.
Have you tried the midi in on this? The manual is pretty skimpy - simply says it has it. I tried it figuring I could sequence any of the 30 voices but found instead that it seems to have a full 16 track 128 voice GM sound module! My guess is that the 30 front end voices are just presets with chorus etc from that module. I was influenced to buy this by your review and I'm glad I did. You felt that it was more than the overpriced glorified teen toy party trick that Yamaha seems to think is its market and I'm glad you did.I now route its midi out into my Axiom 49 and from there back into the Sonogenic's midi in. This allows me to wear and use it like a keytar while adding the faders, program changes etc from the Axiom to access that internal tone module. Thanks fro the thoughtful review and recommendation!
Would have liked to have seen the MIDI break-out but I suspect there's a lot of Reface in this design with a similar break-out. Thinking it will require a safety loop in the MIDI lead on the hidden end of the strap.
When i use the chord tracker for a Jam sessión how can I make the sound of the music song and the things I play in the keytar go out in the same speaker?... Must I connect the keytar with bluetooth with a wireless connector like a guitar? Must i connect the keytar at the same time by bluetooth with the ipad? and how can i do the song music and the keytar sound into the ipad speakers?
Hi 8BitOcarina. I played every sound that is on the Sonogenic. There is no ability to add more sounds. But it does transmit MIDI, so you could add guitar sounds that way. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
See, I'm going for the 300, lol. Much lower in price, and when I pair it with Studio One, I'll be spoiled for choice of VSTs and such. Though, gotta say love the CSR. Bought a $13 egift card for myself, and got a call less than 10 minutes later where we just talked for a bit about things like our keyboard setups. It was wonderful.
shs10 is better cause u can play whole music including melody without aux in recorded.if shs10 has voices and modern styles/shs500 has no/ shs10 would be better. But if Grandma would have the eggs she woudbe a grandpa
My English was bad, wish you can understand my grammar Excuse me~ I have a question. I 'm live in poor sound insulation's place, but I want to play keytar when I after work. SHS-500's main speaker can it be muted after connecting the headset or not? I want play but I don't want disturb or distress to others Thanks! very much
Can this function like those of Yamaha PSR? Build in styles patterns, full accompany, one man band? Looking for that keyboard with shoulder strap type. Play with both hands. Any suggestions?
Hi Kitty. Watch the video at 2:20 where I show both the USB port and the MIDI breakout port, both of which can send/receive MIDI. You can also use Bluetooth for wireless MIDI. Thanks for watching!
How do I create loops? I found where it says loop but what do I press to initiate that function? As soon as I try to press on that button it takes me to another option… I thought it might be the play key whilst bringing up the ‘loop ‘ selection but it just plays the demo so any help is greatly appreciated ❤
Are there instruction books that teach you how to play? Or do you have to take private lessons? I took piano lessons and this looks like a good instrument but do not want to buy something that is too difficult.
Hi Griffin. The SHS-500 was plugged directly into a Zoom F8N Multitrack Field Recorder which recorded the sounds you are hearing. In the video studio, I was listening to a pair of Bose S1 Pro Multi-position PA speakers. But you can't hear them on the video. Thanks for watching. -_Daniel_
Hi greenrobot25. Although the built-in sounds can be modified with the parameters shown in the video, those changes cannot be stored, so you will always start from one of those 30 sounds. Thanks for watching!
yes, there is bluetooth inside! So you can play all Sounds fom i pad via bluetooth. Don't know, why they always only show the built in sounds..... with bluetooth, for example, you can play i-M1 Sounds or Moog Sounds from the i pad.
Hi Dilip, you can either use an AC adapter, or six AA batteries. The AA batteries can be rechargeable, but they won't charge inside the keyboard; you'll have to put them into a battery charger. -_Daniel_
So I'm kind of confused. Does this need a computer to use? Are there internal speakers or something? Is there any way to use this without a computer? I ask because it looks like most other keytars need some sort of computer or module to use.
I was confused about the same thing but after some time of research, i have concluded that some keytars have synthesizers already on them, those of which do not need to run through a computer program to work (MIDI), meaning that it should be able to plug into an amp and go. What you have to be careful is there are other keytars that are MIDI only, meaning that they must go through a computer program (MIDI) to get the voicings. This keyboard in particular does not require MIDI but they all have the feature for people who still want to use MIDI (for additional voicings, etc).
Hi Johnny Pham. I played every sound that the SHS-500 has in this video. All of them can be octave shifted, so anything you hear can be shifted into the bass range. But I don't recall a dedicated bass sound. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Hi Pasgame. I made this video because I felt there were enough videos already showing what Sonogenic can do when connected to another smart device. At no time in my video was the Sonogenic connected to a computer or a smart phone/pad. Everything you heard was coming either from the keys or (sometimes) from the mp3 player I kept in my back pocket. Thanks for watching!
Hi Soumik Trafader. If I understand the question, yes, you can use rechargeable batteries. But you have to charge them outside of the keyboard. -_Daniel_
I’ve always wanted to learn an instrument, but I wanted to be different. I didn’t want a guitar like everyone else, or a violin or something. No, what I need, is a KEYTAR
Hi Whackle. You can modify any of the existing 30 presets by changing Effect Types, Effect parameters, Filter Types, and Filter Cutoff settings. But they will always be based off of the 30 presets that I demonstrated in this video. Thanks for watching!
"..or at a campfire." Yeah, sure. That's the first situation that came to my mind as well. It's perfect for campfires.
Well, I'm an old man, so... -_Daniel_
If i ever went to a campfire, I would definitely bring this thing
Juicy Synth, is gonna move ya, Sounds so smoove, their gonna groove ya!
Dude, this thing at a campfire would slap

Yamaha is best, I want to get new SHS.
Sweetwater provides the most practical reviews. They really think about the working musician.
this is so amazing! ive been so much into keytars these days, ill definitely buy this!
I would love for Yamaha to release a flagship style 49-key version of this.
Daniel, you make every keyboard sound good. Awesome demo!

@@desireemillion Good question. If it exports to midi, it should be easy.
It hits me now that one could create his/her OWN chord track, let the tracker render it and then you could improvise over your own stuff, without making mistakes. I don't have it but now I would like to test it badly, lol.
That's what I was thinking
I got 2 long bedazzle strips on mine
A sight-impaired gentleman and his completely convincing playing of one of the very realistic guitar samples on this thing-on TiKTok brought me here.
Wow, master musician! Excellent demo.

I'm pretty sure that with the addition of a DAW/VST setup that exponentially more than thirty sounds can be coaxed from it
Great presenter, very pleasant to listen to.
Great demo Daniel! 👍😎
Thanks, Aljon! And thanks for watching!
Nice bro ... amazing demo 👍
Damn I had no idea John Goodman was so stacked on the keytar
I’m Impress Thanks for sharing love the sound of this kaytar
What is the name of the intro song? I think I'll buy myself a keytar
Hi Alem Shackluryz. I was just playing along with chord changes that were recorded earlier. Thanks for watching!

Esta genial!!!
Ultra poderoso yeah!
Eu também adoro! -_Daniel_
I tried one of these at a local music store and little mice started to follow me around.
thanks this was very informative video.
Looks fun, I want one!
My main resource for keytar info lol
Instead of another arranger, I might look at this for my next acquisition
A few questions: Can it play bass lines/bass tones? Can it plug into an amp?
Yes and yes👍. A little late but hope it helped
@user-vo1nz5ho5p Thanks man
Is this instrument able to connect via bluethooth to my music boxes for example? If this would be the case I would instantly buy this tho:D
Yes it does. :)

Does it only run on battery. Or can you plug it in with a power cord?
Hi Christina. The Sonogenic can run on either the included AC adaptor, or batteries. Thanks for watching!
Do I need an adapter to go into an amp? I’m mostly wondering what cable this comes with and if it is compatible with amps
Hi BenZeOG. The SHS-500 has a standard 1/4" output jack like you'd find on a guitar, guitar amp, or mixing board. Thanks for watching!
I want one asap !
I wonder what’s the coolest keytar with a built in speaker is ? I don’t want to mess with an amb or midi software
Hey does anyone know if it has a good electric guitar sound? For shredding?
Hi 8BitOcarina. I played every sound that is on the Sonogenic. There is no ability to add more sounds. But it does transmit MIDI, so you could add guitar sounds that way. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

I love keytars, but they are so expensive :/
Can you hook up a microphone to sing alone?
Nice review!
That's a cool instrument, but it's quite pricey here in europe
Pretty cool I would have one!
Ben Chang would love this
Chang is more of a Roland AX Edge kind of guy
question, did you connect the mp 3 player to the keytar or into the amp behind you?

Does it have like a pressure detector? I mean like if you press it hard it plays louder

I midi my keytar to my psr 970 arranger and control it with my keytar
Saturday in the Park :)
I thought the same
I download the minus recordings to mp3 player and attach it to AV input of Sonogenic
Is there a way to store Chorus and Reverb level?
Every time I turn off the keyboard or I change the instrument I loose Chorus and Reverb values.

Can it be played while walking down the street?
Hi Soumik Trafader. It can be played while walking, but it's best not to do it while crossing intersections :-o Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Does it require any sort of configuring beforehand? Or do I just put in the batteries and am able to play?
Hi CTP. Yup, batteries in, power on, play.

Are there instruction books that teach you how to play? Or do you have to take private lessons? I took piano lessons and this looks like a good instrument but do not want to buy something that is too difficult.
I would say that if you know how to play piano, you could play this easily, its just a different way of playing :)
Sir I want to know how loopback function works.. help me plz

I have to say that it was surprisingly enjoyable to play. Thanks for watching!
what did you have it plugged into to amplify the sound?

Is this portable keyboard
Hi Dilip. They don't get more portable than this.

this Keytar is very rare at 80's. Some band members from rock bands uses all types of Keytars sometimes.
Should I get this or the reface cp?
Two different instruments with different specs, depends on what your goal is ?
