Well, Hollingsworth would have been her MAIDEN name, but when it comes to her middle name, that is all up to the creators of the show, or the producers.
So, (I just get) Blanche ?????? Deveroux, and if it HAD been "Elizabeth", that WOULD be "B.E.D.) REALLY, THAT outcome HAD been best and funniest for the show. Her character on the show would have been likely to have those initials as her own.

Bea Arthur explained that one big reason she decided to end her role in the show was because the writers kept making jokes about how unattractive she was and she had enough.
In the beginning, the jokes were about her character being a boring, divorced, substitute teacher who’s husband left her; but then progressed to how she couldn’t get a date and her being unattractive.
Bea had asked the writers to lay off, explaining that making fun of her PHYSICAL APPEARANCE was not the same as calling “Blanche” a slut or “Rose” a moron; but the writers thought it was hilarious.
Unrelated - but I also heard Bea refused to wear shoes on set because she was self-conscious about her height didn’t want to appear even taller! And apparently she had a short temper and DID NOT LIKE Betty White!

I worked in the corporate office at Witt Thomas Harris in the 1990s as the corporate receptionist and my SIL was a producer on Golden Girls (she was also an extra in the audience during "Dorothy's" wedding). Bea was actually a very nice lady. I used to talk to her on the phone often. Betty White was a very funny lady (who swore like a truck driver)-she and Bea didn't get along because Betty was incredibly passive aggressive and Bea was very direct and didn't appreciate Betty's lack of forwardness.
Dorothy's last name was a tribute to Kent Zbornak who was a friend of Susan Harris and the stage manager for Golden Girls.

Rue McClanahan had not even been cast when the series' pilot director, Jay Sandrich, asked her if she could also read the Blanche role. And it wasn't the actresses' decision to change roles, it was the pilot director, Jay Sandrich, of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' fame. And you're half correct about Bea Arthur not being interested because when they approached her, she was told Betty White would be playing Blanche and Rue would be playing Rose. She told Rue that she wasn't interested in seeing Rue again play the nitwit as she had in 'Maude' with Betty continuing her Sue Evins' role from 'MTM.' When Rue told her that Sandrich had switched parts, that was when Bea decided it could be a good show.

    Some disputes...
Bea Arthur was never rumored to be difficult. She was always presumed to be that way because of her stature and how she carried herself, but producers and writers of both Maude and Golden Girls all had wonderful things to say about her. Producers in the Golden Girls said she was very professional, and despite getting her feelings hurt with the constant Dorothy jabs she managed to be respectful.
While Bea and Betty probably had their differences, I doubt it was anything personal or ugly. Co-workers and colleagues have their differences, and sometimes it can cause some tension. Doesn't mean it's a feud or what not. I know Betty made claims that Bea didn't like her, but from what we've seen the ladies were always cordial and respected one another very much. They just weren't close friends, which is fine. People need to remember, when you work together for seven years and then little things are done and said during that time sporadically. When those things are all brought up years later at once, things can get twisted.

Please please PLEASE stop telling the lies about Bea being difficult & disliking Betty:
    1. Betty expressed great sorrow at the loss of Bea. She annoyed Bea intentionally, in jest, and Bea would get sick of her BS because Bea was an introvert. They were good friends according to all sources who knew them.
    2. Unlike the others, Bea was a true theatre legend before GG even started. She conducted herself accordingly. Unlike film & TV actors who are used to doing multiple takes, trained theatre actors typically don’t like last minute script changes, people not knowing their lines, and foolishness during showtime. So, Bea gets chastised for being professional.

I can't argue the success of the show from the 80's to the present day. The results/statistics speak for themselves. I personally preferred the Dixie Carter CBS version of the show, 'The Designing Women' that started the following year, and also ran for several years. I found it to be more intelligent without reliance on sex jokes, etc. One of the producers was a client of my late father (an attorney) whom I met and found out some interesting things. I told him I always felt with Bea's character, an undercurrent of anger and resentment that my instincts told me were real, but could be disguised as elements of the 'Dorothy' character. He told me it wasn't my imagination. She felt the show was very much beneath her '70s series, 'Maude' in terms of writing; going for cheap laughs, being repetitive, limiting and more. The stupidity of Betty's character 'Rose', sexpot 'Blanche' and annoying 'Sophia' made her feel trapped. 'Maude' was the complete opposite for Bea. Yet it was a hit series and she couldn't do much about it, at all. Bea was hurt that she will only be remembered for this show, and not Maude, which (unfortunately) turned out to be true. A commonality in reverse with Lucille Ball in that the public only saw her as Lucy Ricardo in her first '50s series and still does, even though she had two other very funny series in the 60s and 70s. In Bea's case it was her 2nd series that's remembered, as if she never made Maude, and that hurt her deeply. She knew well before she passed away in 2009 this was the case. Indeed when she passed away, only the Golden Girls was mentioned with maybe a brief reference to Maude.

Dorothy was a 1 year older than Sophia. I love Golden Girls Bea Arthur was my favorite she and Betty White made me laugh so hard loved how Rose would be clueless those looks Dorothy would have was priceless. Read that years ago about Bea and Betty White that Betty said Bea wasn't find also Estelle Getty didn't like Betty. That was strange all three Golden Girls died years apart remember Estelle died 2008, next year Bea Arthur from cancer in 2009 and summer 2010 Blanche died of a stroke she was also a cancer survivor. Betty White was a tough old bird 🐦 she lived closed to her 100th birthday that was a blessing I miss all of them and loved them so much they were some amazing women especially Betty White she was such a sweet lady.

Bea Arthur was amazing and a classicly trained actress. Every character she ever played, I remember. I don't think it was Bea's fault that she didn't get along very well with Betty White. Betty White was known for being notoriously ill prepared at rehearsals. Bea Arthur being classically trained hated this fact and Betty never did anything to work on being better prepared. It's like Betty took being dim witted to heart. She played many roles as a dim wit, and I think it affected her real life as she was always unprofessional on set. I think this drove Bea nuts. As far as conflict with other actresses on the show, I've never heard of issues on set.

They got along fine as workmates, they just weren't friends offset. Hollingsworth was Blanche's maiden name. And the video often repeats itself. This what happens when you are trying to make a video from very old information.
