Could listen to you for hours Chris. Very often it’s like hearing what I have been thinking for ages. Love how you express your opinion without all that PC BS. My favourite line is how exhausted you get watching Danny doing all the work 😂. Looking forward to more, and with Danny on as well.

We use campsites 100% of the time. We travel with a two year old and got another one on the way.
We don’t have a toilet or shower In our camper van, although a rear door shower and bottle to pee in. Just too risky with a toddler so need the security and facilities of a site.
That being said we used two of your books to plan NC500 route with a few extras built in, which we are currently getting towards the end of. The sites vary between £26.50 a night and £45. The most expensive site is the one you mentioned in this video and it’s at least 10% more expensive than the other 12. Nice facilities but it would struggle to make my top 5 out of the 12. Two more to go then back home to Newcastle on Saturday.
Keep up the good work Chris. Enjoying the pod cast on our trip.

Camp sites will always be popular with caravanners but at £42 a night for a local site in north Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I will be leaving it to them.

Would love to do more off grid stops but it's finding them and feeling safe, I know there's sfs and p4n but a layby on the roadside is not for me. I must be looking in the wrong places or over thinking it because others seem to manage it.

    Dog x3
Had Cats x2 in the past too!
Dogs are more engaging, more dependant and are like young kids, you get a great welcome every time you come home!

I have only stayed at one campsite so far , Skyside in the Lake district , it was great mind you there was a good pub at the entrance ;),my plan is to use a campsite when i need water or to empty the porta potti.

The worst thing about booking campsites ahead is that it means you no longer have flexibility to change your plans, which you might want to do based on weather or because you want to explore somewhere a bit longer before moving on to the next place. That's what I don't like, it just prevents true spontaneity on your travels. The choice ends up being between spontaneity and crossing your fingers you'll find a campsite just when you need it, or having the security of booking your sites and having to stick to the plan.

Great topic Chris, while away we use C&CC certified sites and only the very basic ones (water and waste), every 3rd night. Just for the services. Unless in Scotland, as you know😉 Would love to see European Aire type stopovers here in England/Wales. The ones that don't charge £20-£25.

The other issue (as we are finding this weekend). They want 2 nights min or 3 on a bank holiday. But we are working and won't get there till really late as want to travel far away from home. But by then they are closed. So we can't book. And then half time they are not even full but still won't let you book 1 day!
Starting to become a fan of the pub carpark option now. But no shower in my van is a bit of an issue on longer trips

Personally I travel to enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of the countryside, where all I hear are animals, wind, rain.
Not kids running rampant, screaming, domestics, drunken antics. I see people going to Spain, France, crammed into some campsite that holds hundreds of vans, permanent caravans with tarps, etc, reminds me of Pontins etc.
I like the aires, where you have a card, swipe in, there’s water, electric if you need it, minimum stay, great for access to town, city.

Re your guy with the Chesterfield skin, I travel solo because I like solo, no need for forced company. 😊 My late wife and I had five children so solo travel is still a novelty. Having said that, I get why some do it for the meet ups though. Camping is for all sorts though, that's why I enjoy it.

I do see and agree with a lot of your views but believe campsites will still be used by a lot of people due to family, security, tent campers etc etc. We are lucky as the missus and I have the best of both worlds living in France where there are loads of Aires and other overnight stops (including France Passion and the likes). I think however that if campsites in the UK continue putting their prices up and if Scotland goes ahead with their “tourist tax” then they will shoot themselves in the foot and campsites will become less and less needed as more and more people will start going back to visiting Europe for better value for money holidays. Like you it’s only my opinion 🤔

But I just wanted to ask if you could possibly change your podcast logo - I’m due a colonoscopy on Friday and the “Sloanes” bit is giving me sleepless nights. Would very much appreciate it 👍

Totally in agreement with you (God this is worrying🤣🤣). I think possibly the % use etc is correct, but the sheer numbers of Motorhomes , campers and conversions has increased dramatically meaning that even though there is a massive % of us that dont need them, those that do are present in such great numbers that most campsites are fully booked.
This them has the knock on effect that those of us who chose to randomly travel around and book something last minute, can no longer find availability....and dont get me started on minimum 3 night stays. I know its horses for courses, and demand and supply. Certainly when we do 10 nights away, an Aire or something with more than a permissive / paid sleep over would be welcome. I understand the campsites bitterness? towards wild camping / overnight park ups etc, and if they choose to go down the route of minimum stays / not allowing you to pay to just use facilities etc...yes I get it. But we do need more emptying facilities across the country if it is to cope with the number of people not using campsites. Personally I know I am responsible enough to plan my trip accordingly, but others are not and they do unfortunately need it to be made easy for them.

100% agree. Although we are looking to go to Portugal via northern Spain this summer....the campsites we looked at in spain wanted 2 weeks! Fingers crossed we find some parkups or ones free for 1 night as got a 6 year old and don't fancy wild camping as much with him

No, campsites here to stay as the number of the vans increase with inexperienced campers, elderly travellers . My wife also prefer to stay on them so as she can get a shore shower in the morning. I am trying to wean her off campsites and do more CL’s, aires and park ups.

Nothing beats a good wild camping spot. However if we go away for more than 2/3 nights, we like to book a campsite. Shower, power, and sometimes just knowing you don’t need to find a spot. Some sites are great, and would happily revisit, occasionally they are a bit p1sh.
So I am all for campsites, but for 1 or 2 night we pretty much always wild camp. All about getting to know places to park up, and building that wee portfolio of gid places.

I think it’s skewed you thoughts. Baring in mind people like myself camp 🏕️ so they are surviving many different requirements and needs. I my self go motorcycle touring and we camp alot or use hotels even with the car on some holidays we camp and camp site normally have a reasonable level of facilities and safety. But I get where you’re coming from but remember there are over types of users which campsites service and cater for. Not to say there are good and bad like in everything.

Cat or dog , that’s a hard one , nah it’s not , dog . 🫶❤️🐾 liked the way you stated why not campsites , they are a bit too rigid .
