  • This series spends a lot of time looking at other races, but how do the species of the Mass Effect universe see us, humans? The Humans Systems Alliance is the body that governs Earth and her colony worlds but how is it viewed by your day to day citadel citizen?
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!
    How to VOTE on what happens next:
    Down below in the comments are two choices of topics left by me.

      @stewps How many Relays did the other races open before rachni were found? and how do we know going through one more relay would not have found better preserved technology for use against reapers or a new race who was friendly. since Vorcha/Rachni/Yahg/Krogan/Batarian were really 5/14 races who were hostile as a whole. Krogan and Yahg may even be Turian/Salarians fault for encountering them so early and trying to force them to change.

    • @Exodon2020
      @Exodon2020 4 года назад +11

      @@kyleellis9177 I wouldn't even consider the Krogan or Batarians hostile by nature.
      Although being morally ambiguous at best the Batarians didn't turn rogue until their diplomatic schism with the Citadel over Human Colonization efforts. Before that they largely abided by Citadel law and did honour its treaties.
      Although being aggressive and sometimes a little brutish the Krogan are also shown to have a sense or Personal Honour and can generally be worked with as long as you don't look weak in their eyes. The rift between the Krogan and the Citadel occured because the Krogan have adapted to a deeply hostile world which granted them a high adaptiveness to Alien environments, resistance to most poisons and venoms as well as an unusually high fertility rate to cope with most specimen usually dying before reaching Adulthood even after developing a Civilization. When the Salarians uplifted the Krogan from slowly dying in the Nuclear Winter they caused themselves and bestowed upon them all amenities of a spacefaring Civilization those High Birth Rates combined with a sudden high infant survivability rate and caused overpopulation on Tuchanka as well as other Colonies the Krogan founded in Cooperation with the Citadel Council.

      @@Exodon2020 Krogans are hostile, its litterally part of their nature. now this doesn't make them evil just more likely to resort to violence. compared to other races, they had just nuked their own world because of how hostile they were.. Batarians again are hostile, and were determined to exert authority over humans as soon as we entered the galactic stage.
      Yes ihad them in a list with the Yahg but im not saying oh these are all equally evil i said their cultures are more hostile then the galactic norm. if you cant agree batarians and krogans are more likely to resort to force then the volus for example, you clearly never played the games.
      Krogans raised on another world might have been nice and friendly and same with batarians but they werent the natural enviroment they were raised in said be hostile or die. Batarians left he citadel so the could get revenge.

      Its actually full on ridiculous on just how fast humanity grew in the Mass Effect verse. The time between them discovering Mass Effect and the First Contact War was around 10 years. Within that 10 year time period, they not only managed to reverse engineer a large portion of mass effect technology from the Prothean database, but they then managed to create and outfit hundreds of ships with said technology, many of which would not have been tested in real combat until that war. Then after that war, within the 30 years until the start of the first game, they managed to not only catch up with the rest of the galaxy, but actually exceed many of the smaller client races in technology and sheer numbers in military. That is a really ridiculous growth rate.

      Citadel DLC Holo-Archive of the First Contact War, yeah? That WAS more likely General Desolas Arterius' aim when mobilizing his scout fleet, but the majority of Hierarchy leaders didn't know the full extent of Desolas' intentions considering his edited reports. Consider if you will, compared to the Volus whom petitioned for Turian Hierarchy protection of their territory and assets, full-on invasion and subjugation of a species outside the authority of the Citadel Council would be devastating to the Turians to their economy and ruin their reputation as protectors and galactic peace-keepers. They'd probably have their Council status revoked if they were found to instigating a war of conquest on another species without just cause. Also possibly being banned from operating in Citadel space and the Asair destroying their economy like they did the Batarians for their own continued use of slavery and black-funded pirate raids via heavy sanctions that would realistically devolve into a mass economic depression for the Turians.

    There's something deeply appealing to me about the Mass Effect universe. I think it's because of how humanity feels so small and insignificant there. Just another species among many, and one of the newcomers at that. I love Star Trek for its technology, and for its positive view of our future and our potential. But as a fictional world, the over abundance of humanity shown in Trek is unappealing to me. I understand why it is that way, and I understand Starfleet and the UFP are not exclusively human institutions, but it sure feels like they are. I was just watching your "Why NOT to Join the Federation" video and one of your points really hit home: The idea of a species losing its cultural identity in order to assimilate into the Federation. Star Trek has a real problem with that, it's essentially a galaxy owned and operated by humans. Even the few prominent non-human species, such as Vulcans, are regularly harassed for not being "human enough", often told that they should be more like us. For me personally, the big appeal of exploring space would be to discover new life and new cultures. To finally be out in space and still find yourself surrounded by other humans is... well, let's just say that's why I'd choose to live in the Mass Effect universe.

    I read in the lore while playing Mass effect 1, that the other races saw Humanity as a sleeping giant due to our military being so small yet so powerful. As he said that we only had 3% of our population as part of the military and the lowest of all the other races, they fear what would happen if we became more aggressive and increased even by just another 3%. From what i saw in the games, the other races tended really to fear Humanity for what we might become, we were moving faster than them and saw everything as a challenge. Many Turians of course both feared and respected Humanity as we beat them int he first contact war and even though they did commit all their forces they still suffered a defeat to a supposedly lesser race.
    In my opinion too, the difference with Humanity was our ships, specially during ME3 you see that the Turian Cruisers are light, fast and rely on numerical advantage and sustained firepower. Whereas the Human Cruisers were heavier and slower but were covered in much heavier weaponry. In my view a straight fight between a Turian and Human Cruiser would end with a Human win and could probably take on two or three Turian Cruisers. We valued quality over quantity.
    This alone i think would make the Turians nervous and the Assari who although ad huge ships that outgunned anything the Alliance had, they still only had a very small number of them. The main military force of the Turians and the leadership of the Assari would look at Humanity with a degree of suspicion, fear and respect. It was probably why they voted in our favour on a number of issues really because they feared we would end up simply taking it it we were refused too much or outright. The Salarians were probably perplexed by us as they were considered the most innovative species only the be given a run for their money in how humanity went about our advancement.
    It was probably why they were worried about Humanity, we seemed to hold a lot of characteristics of all their races but dilled up to 11. maybe they feared we would become the next Rachni or Krogan?
    Sorry for long rant lol

      I am not certain, but I remember the number being 2.5%. And if you calculate it for current US for example it would mean that 8.18 million would be in the armed forces. So I would assume that this number was more about everyone serving and working with the Systems Alliance. Hell, current World Population is at 7 billion, so with this estimate today's Systems Alliance would be 175 million people.

      Then they wouldn't be very likable in the story-telling. The idea was having humans be more accepting of the aliens and cohabitating with various races peacefully. The struggle of gaining acceptance due to the First Contact War (Relay 314 Incident) set a precedent with the Turians, the interest of the Asari due to Human similarity, the Salarian typical exploitative incentives, and the jealousy of the other Embassy races (Hanar, Elcor, Volus, Batarian) due to the Human's willing to wage war SMART and the Council's prerogative of trying to keep humanity under some level of control. IF humans weren't part of the Citadel with an embassy, human colonization would've probably doubled, overlapping into territories belonging to Batarians, or outright neighboring the Krogan DMZ. Their rightful fear was that, due to humanities diversity between various nations, planets, cultures, religions, and businesses, on top of having a fully working Prothean beacon, meant that the humans would outpace and possibly advance technologically beyond the Council species in under a century.
      By comparison, the Citadel had been more or less languishing in a state of stagnation for decades, if not centuries. Mostly due to the policy of Forbidding Relay Activation with fewer territory to expand into.
      That's my 5 cents anyway.

So why would alliance navy differ? its not an army but a navy and i would be disgusted if it was common for NCO's to command ships capable of killing a planet since it really isn't hard for a single ship to "meteorite" a planet.

    But I do understand why we scare the other races, we are capable of the intelligence of salarians, the ruthlessness of the krogan, strategic warfare like the turians and spread like the rachni. i think the main thing i got from my play throughs was that we were the race that would take an risk or challange or even hardship and come out better for it we were there when the rest of the galaxy needed us against the rogue geth then despite being dismissed we stood agianst the collecters then the reapers we led the way and in the end we united the galaxy like never before we achived something not even the prothens did we stood up to extinction and we won we proved our worth and our leader ship and our loyalty to those that stood with us we did something that had thought by even some humans as impossible but your char and his crew both human and alien brought the galaxy together and beat the greatest threat ever to come we did this even after we had been shuned by the other races and even though we were the newest kids on the block its clear to see from the game that without us every race that was attacked would be dead not to mention sooner due to the events of arrival

    Just had a thought that wouldn't surprise me at all (no matter how unlikely).
    It would be interesting if it came out that an advanced civilization was very subtly nudging our culture toward peaceful exploration and expansion to space, rather that a fearful, war-like approach that our history would predict.
    By encouraging the popular sci-fy entertainment like Star Trek and such that shows the benefits of being peaceful. While in others like Halo just how bad it can get if we choose the warmonger route.
    I'm sure this isn't the case but again i wouldn't be surprised if it was.

    The System's Alliance is probably my favourite faction from Mass Effect, but not because of the fact they're human. I like them because they're incredibly diverse while still being the same faction; they're like the Citadel races if they were all merged into one. Not to mention I really love - and I mean LOVE - the military aspect of them. I'm all for big and powerful militaries, but sometimes a strong military is one that's smaller and flexible, like the System's Alliance one. It plays it's cards smartly, it keeps it's fleet strong and competent, and it's infantry seems to strike the right balance of tooth and tail for the absolute maximum effectiveness, with most people operating in the tooth and computers and the like mostly operating in the tail.
    I just wish we got to see them in much clearer detail, especially the military aspect. I would've loved to see a platoon of Marines in action. The only thing I don't really like is the Rank and command structure, which needs some work, but I already took care of that.

    • @sebastianb5036
      @sebastianb5036 3 года назад

      Interesting thought. Guess they would be seem as odd from a technological standpoint. As I see it Star Trek technology would be superior and give them quite an edge. In Mass effect they use particle accelerator guns on ships. It would be very hard to hit an ship travelling at full impulse or firing photon torpedoes from warp. Also Star Fleet ships have deflectors to protect ships from debris at relativistic speeds.
      So all in all I think everything would go down almost the same path. And in the end all get wiped out by the reapers. Star Fleet wouldn't be able to defend earth against a reaper invasion.

    • @therookie7060
      @therookie7060 3 года назад +1

      @@sebastianb5036 in terms of weapons technology I think Starfleet would be way more advanced than the reapers considering they had phasers or phase cannons as they were called in the early days that fired beams of nadeon particles, meaning directed energy weapons, something no spices in Mass effect has a counter for, not even the reapers.

    • @sebastianb5036
      @sebastianb5036 3 года назад

      @@therookie7060 The Reapers had something that resmbled Energy Weapons and I believe they had shields.
      Let's assume Star Fleet is superior - I believe they would be just overwhelmed by thousands of them.
      They didn't have a lot of capable ships in 22nd century. They couldn't even defend earth from the Xindi Probe or Weapon.
      Depending on how things turn out. Star Trek Earth might become their absolute priority target since it is an anomaly compared to other cycles.
      In ME they spread their forces.

    • @ilo3456
      @ilo3456 6 лет назад +2

      I believe that it is due to in fact ideological diversity, if you notice all of the other species have very rigid social orders, while humans came together with many different ideologies in a form of government which encourages that ideological diversity, so humans have everything, ranging from diplomats, political leaders, military leaders, engineers, scientists, businessmen, spies, assassins, pilots, explorers, adventurers. Basically Humanity has such a diverse group of people that it is able to come up with many different approaches to a single situation, you only need to see the first contact war and the casualties to see that Humanity would have been able to push the Turians back.
      Also humans have found legal loopholes to increase our naval power by building the Heavy Carriers, that are basically slightly different Dreadnoughts, and really the fact is that no matter that conflict humanity will learn to exploit an enemies weakness, and will use the means that are necessary to win.

    If you are going to do a lore channel you should probably learn the difference between interstellar and intergalactic. Interstellar means 'between stars' and is intragalactic meaning it takes place within a galaxy. Intergalactic means 'between galaxies'. The Mass effect universe does not become intergalactic until Mass Effect Andromeda. All the events of the first three games take place in the Milky Way (The galaxy in which we are located). You destroy your credibility with mistakes like this and you perpetrate a pet peev of mine, that people will flippantly talk about space, then come across as ingnorant fools when they demonstrate thier inability to conceptualise the distances involved by constantly using 'intergalactic' for literally everything space related.
    Just to be absolutely sure you understand. Galaxy is not a synonim for solar system or star system. A Galaxy is a universal formation of tens of billions, sometimes trillions of stars, either held together by gravity or gravity and electromagnetism, depending on which hypthosis of universal structure formation you listen to. A solar system is usually two stars held together by gravity (and/or electromagnetism) with a collection of non-stellar objects in orbit around them, namely planets, planetesimals, asteroids, comets and alien constructs and if you listen to some speculative channels (Yeah I mean you Issac) megastructures as far as the eye can see.
    I hope you are suitably embarrassed. Usually only dirty colonials make this mistake. Remember man, you are british. Start acting like it (by getting your fact right).
