Indian Scout Bobber Rear Suspension Upgrade - Progressive 444

- Опубликовано: 4 авг 2024
- So a long overdue upgrade for the bobber (surprised it took me almost a year to get to this one!). I’ve been waiting on these shocks to be available for quite awhile. It took 4 months to get these after I ordered them due to all of the backlogs and backorders created in the wake of the covid 19 shutdowns. I looked at other shocks but these seemed to be what I kept coming back to. I have heard great things about the fox shocks but they weren’t available until June and they were 300 USD more than I paid for these and didn’t hear anything suggesting that they were better. The install consisted of 4 bolts and were one of the easiest mods with the biggest impact. The bike feels so much better with these shocks.
I’m also providing links below to the parts I’ve installed on my bike. The procedure is pretty easy and outlined in this video.

Phenomenal video! Subbed!
Thank you. I appreciate that!
excited for this one, looking at an upgrade myself. Excited for the honest review after some more riding time
Just installed mine today. Video was perfect. Thank you!
Thanks for great video & the comparison footage was so satisfying.. 5***** ✌🏼
Thanks for watching!
I love the Mando sissy bar! Epic!
your videos are always been very helpful,,,
Thanks. Im happy that people get something out of them. I appreciate you watching.
Huge difference. I went with the Progressive 970's. Best thing I purchased other than the Bobber :)
What are the differences between the two?
I have a 23 Indian Scout Rogue and I upgraded to the 444 shocks. I went with the 11 1/2 inch, standard. Despite some reports on RUclips reporting these won’t work unless you weigh at least 170 pounds or so, I am 130 pounds at 5‘7“. I’ve got about a half an inch of preload dialed in and it is FANTASTIC! It now floats over the small stuff and is considerably less violent on the big potholes, etc. More planted in the turns and the extra half inch gives me a teeny bit more lean angle.
Thanks for the great video. Also I dig those dope sneakers.
Thanks. Love my BMX Vans. 😎
Nice video... Looking for a new bike after I sold my M109R earlier in the year when I thought my riding days were over... Looking at a few different ones but want aftermarket parts to be available to get the look & feel I want & the Scout Bobber is one of the bikes I'm looking at... I see you have quite a few videos on this bike & it's exactly what I'm looking for... Thank you... You've just got yourself another subscriber ✌✌✌
Thanks for watching and subscribing
super helpful video, great stuff!
Glad it was helpful!
DANG................for the phone. I didn't even see it. Till you played it back.
Dude you made my day! Mahalo.
Mahalo
Good job thanks 4 your time
Thanks for watching
Oh shit your phone! Haha. You make it look easy, I'll totally install my own shocks when it comes time. Maybe I should order now so I can do it before the year is over lol
Probably. Hopefully production catches up with demand soon.
Thanks for this! I’m about to install my own set and will give you a shout out!
You will love them. Huge improvement.
@@MessyGarageBMW yeah I had them on another Scout and agree, the ride is much improved. Back then I had a dealer install them LOL
@@TwoIndians let me know when you publish the video. I'd love to check it out. I have more videos coming as well.
@@MessyGarageBMW are you familiar with our channel?
@@TwoIndians yes, I've seen a bit of your content. Fun stuff. Love travel myself so it is cool to see the places you have in some of your videos.
The canera on thebseing arm is awesome.
Thanks
Thank you for this awesome video! Really makes one to upgrade to progressive shocks. Sorry it came with the price of your phone though.
This is a great upgrade for sure. Crazy thing is my phone actually survived the fall! 45mph fall from a bike on pavement and I'm using it to respond to this comment. Hard to imagine. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the press fit tip, they should do this at the factor for $700. I put 444-4248B on my 2017 scout and it made a dramatic difference in stability and ride quality.
I think its because it lifts the rear and alters the bobber look slightly.
Nevermind. Im thinking of the fox suspension
Great video. Was there any height or lowering of the rear when you adjusted for fitment? And are you satisfied more with these shocks? Where do I get a set? Thank you.
So there was a slight difference in length between the stock and new shocks but it is not noticeable once everything is back together. I absolutely love this upgrade and wish I would've done it sooner. Makes the bike way more comfortable to ride solo or 2 up. There is a link in the description for an Amazon link on where to get the shocks. The link is only for the chrome ones at this point but I will try to add the black later. There has been a backorder on these for months.
Top 🔝 👌🏻🤘
Thanks for watching.
Good job. Wouldn’t that top hat be a bushing?
Thanks for the video, and sorry about the phone :). What length did you go with? And, did that increase your rear suspension travel?
I did the 11.5 length. You can't even notice the .5 inch extra height in the looks but it really does take a bit of bite out of the bumps. I was worried about a bad look or bad ride but am blown away at how much it improved the ride and didn't ruin the look at all. There is a link in the description to the chrome version if what I ordered. The black ones weren't available at amazon.
thx for this vid! how is the hand adjustability? is it really tool less?
Yes you just grab the top collar and twist. Can be easily done by hand
Hey boss! Really appreciate the thorough reviews and giving back to community via time and money (indirectly! =) Question on license plate mount... Do you know where and how I can source a vertical setup like you have on yours? Did you modify a bracket or go after market?
Thanks for watching and the support. As far as the bracket for the plate goes. All I did was take a hack saw and cut the existing plate and then I secured the license plate to it. Free hack.. literal hack :)
@@MessyGarageBMW haha Smart move.. So basically cut it and then drill more holes in it and put it vertical... Did you keep the stock light attached as well>?
Yep, stock light is still hooked up and works as normal. Just have to be comfortable taking a saw to your new bike and bada boom bada bang... vertical plate.
That mythosaur sissy bar is sweet! This is the way.
Love it even though Disney has screwed up Boba Fett so much in the new series.
@@MessyGarageBMW Yeah... I'm hoping they'll make it up in the last episode a bit and or season 2. One thing is for sure, I'm absolutely stoked for Mando season 3 now!
@@ryguy9341 mando is excellent. Looking forward to s3
Awesome job thank you. Where did you find the backrest that fits around the rear pad?
Custom made by deanspeed. There is another video in that on on my channel as well as a coupon code for a discount on their stuff. Top notch. I use their parts on my bobber and my Springfield darkhorse
@@MessyGarageBMW Perfect. Thank you
It seems like it's a massive upgrade and difference between the two.
I ride solo 95% of the time, but every once in a while the wife joins me so I always have the doubt if I should keep in consideration both out weights when buying the shocks, or not since is a once in a while thing having the passenger.
I'm in the same boat. One of the reasons I went with these is you can adjust the preload without tools. Set it for solo riding and then twist the top of the shock to increase preload for when you are riding 2 up. Then just decrease again for solo. Easy by just twisting the adjuster by hand.
@@MessyGarageBMW and the 11.5 is also longer then the stock shocks right?
Yes, by 1/2 inch. Can't even tell
@@MessyGarageBMW nice! I'll take a look into those too. And i can't manage to find the legs you have anywhere lol
@@ajvalerio86 they discontinued the rider pegs but if you keep looking they pop up every once in awhile for sale.
Where did you get these passenger pegs? Great videos btw 👌
These are the Indian billet aluminum pegs. I think you can still get ahold of the passenger pegs but the rider pegs are hard to find. They look great in my opinion.
Great video. Can you confirm what passenger pegs you installed.
The pegs are the Indian billet contrast cut pegs. Video link is here
ruclips.net/video/LMptZQunJTk/видео.html
Will these fit the 2022? I was thinking of going with the 12" to raise the bike a little, other than the main highways the roads here are TERRIBLE!! Even spots on the main highways have frost heaves and pot holes.
Yes they will fit on a 22. These are a great upgrade over stock.
I have a 22 ordered and getting parts before it gets here. Where did you get the shocks? Do you happen to have a link? I'm sure you said but I missed it.
There should be links in my video descriptions of everything I install and some tools if I can find links to them.
GREAT VID. Those stock shocks look so cheap! Try changing your camera to Single Focus Mode rather than Continuous Focus Mode
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for making this! How did you get around on the pipe side where there isn't much space for the lower end of the bolt.
If I remember correctly I used a box wrench on that end and having the rear of the bike on the jack helped a little. It is a tight fit.
@@MessyGarageBMW , i did it last night as well but wasn't able to torque the lower belt to specs. If i torqued it while it was on the lift, i may not have been able to align the upper bolt in its place. Maybe ,may not. So i gather you didn't torque the lower bolt as well?
@@lifesmusings been awhile since I did it. I think I mightve guessed at the bottom one based on the feel of the other three.
Thanks for the info... BTW, how did you hang your license plate vertically? Did you cut the factory bracket?
Thanks for watching. Yes, I just cut the factory bracket and hung the plate vertically. That way the stock light still works and it cost me nothing to do.
@@MessyGarageBMW NICE, smart move
Getting ready to so the same to mine. Easy, free and functional with the factory light. I'm thankful Indian made it a breakaway style otherwise I would have broke it off several times now. Love the bike and your videos man. Very informative and well detailed.
How much suspension travel did you gain?
Thank for helping a video
I have a one question
What is your passenger pegs?
I have the billet aluminum Indian Select pegs front and back with matching shift and brake peg. I don't think they make them anymore. They should bring them back because they are fantastic and everyone asks me about them.
Great video. Which model 444s did you use?
Thanks man, I really like them. I got 11.5 inch standard duty. There is a link in the video description.
Great video n info. I'm looking at the exact same, the 444's 11.5" in black for my 21 bobber. Riding solo (170lbs), but once a month or so with the partner (140lbs). Have you ridden with passenger yet, and how is it?, comfort and everything?
Yes. Ive ridden with passengers before and after this upgrade and they have said it was an absolute game changer. Before the ride was a bit jarring and they felt every bump but now the bumps are either nothing or felt but softer so it is way more comfortable.
@@MessyGarageBMW I'm in the same boat.. 90% of my rides are solo but I wanna take my wifey on a couple of hours rides.. Does this work fine or should I go with a heavy duty one? We both weigh 185 lbs each..
@@pdsarizona1191 in my opinion you should be fine with these. I'd read to see what their weight ratings are but these work well for me when solo and on 2 up rides.
@@MessyGarageBMW Thank you so much for the response and for all the good work for the community. The indian community loves you.. You rock brother!
Awesome video ! What was the seat height difference ?
It was less than 1/2 inch difference so you can't tell by looking but the feel is better.
Hi sir, I recently bought meteor 350 according to my budget and wanted to have more comfortable ride as our roads as too many pot holes. So can I install progressive 444 for my meteor 350 bike for a more comfortable ride? Please suggest as I getting back pain due to poor road conditions.
I'm not sure of what exact shocks would fit the meteor. These are for the Indian scout bobber.
This is the exact customization I think I need bars and shocks... What about your seats?
I like the 1920 solo seat. I think it is comfortable and looks good on the bike.
HAHAHA there went the phone!
I wonder if these would fit the 2017 Victory Octane
I'm not sure but the bikes are so similar they may.
Did you run into any issues going from 11" to 11.5"? I see all the disclaimers from Progressive about changing from stock could result in blah blah blah. Just curious if you had/have any problems with the added length?
Amazon. Issues at all. The look doesn't change only a more comfortable ride. The ride is still very planted and not spongy like on my C50. This is a must have upgrade in my opinion. I think the fox shocks are also 11.5 and Indian recommends those all day so I am not worried about the extra .5 inch.
i wonder how they compare to Fox shocks? Bike accessory companies sure are proud of their stuff, lol
I haven't tried the fox but in my research they were pretty similar so I went this direction since I didn't need to pay extra for the indian branding.
Did you put the 11 in factory standard or did you order the 11.5 or 12 inch shocks?
Ordered the 11.5. There is a link in the description where to buy the chrome version of what I installed. The part number of mine are 444-4247B
@@MessyGarageBMW Why did you decided to go with 11.5" and not 11" ?
@@mrloza1253 I felt the .5 inch wouldn't take it away from the look as it wouldn't be noticeable but would also give a little more travel if needed.
@@MessyGarageBMW Right on, thank you.... great video 👌🏽
Standard or Heavy duty? How different does the ride feel?
These are a great upgrade. The ride is a huge improvement. I should not have waited this long to upgrade them. I installed 11.5 standard duty and would not change a thing.
Great Video! Look at 8:18 when the comparison of shocks are shown. Look at his leg when he hits the bump at about 8:21 and how the stock shocks, you can see his leg move noticeably more than with the progressive. Probably the only way to improve on the video would have been to put sticks across the road and ride over them to remain consistent.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. This is one of the best upgrades for rideability and comfort in my opinion.
How does it make stance of bike look from side?! Make bike sit higher in the rear or ?
The bike looks and sits the same just with beefier looking shocks. There is no change to stance or looks of the bike at all. Totally positive upgrade.
@@MessyGarageBMW Cool !😁😁😁😁. Thanks for video and great job. I'm thinking same upgrade and front forks as well. Front seems soft and rear hard as a rock. Ran over a ant but felt like I hit a huge pothole. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Where did you get those passenger pegs?
These are the billet Indian pegs for rider and passenger. I am not sure if they are available anymore for the scout and scout bobber. I think Indian discontinued them unfortunately but I think you can still find them at some places on the net.
Still wondering how you got that water bottle holder rigged up to the side of the bike 🤔
The straps of the water bottle holder are around the little bars on the ignition cover.
@@MessyGarageBMW thanks! I'll check mine out tomorrow. No heat damage to the straps?
No. I have had no problems with it and have even ridden home with a smoothie in there and it was still cold and smoothieish when I got home.
Do the new shocks lift the rear more at all
on paper maybe 1/2 inch but nothing you notice in looks. The look still looks slammed just with a more ridable feel.
What is your rear GoPro mount set up
I'm using a magnetic mount. I've also used this mount on my tank to hold the 360 camera and the fenders with the go pro as well as some car shots. It is strong and rubber coated so if you make sure it is clean and the surface of the bike/car is clean you should be safe to use it without scratching.
amzn.to/3kg9nME
What size are the bolts? I can't seem to find that information anywhere.
Tools listed are in the video description. 17mm socket and wrench is what I used.
@@MessyGarageBMW Thanks for the reply but I meant the actual bolt. I figured it out. M12 x 60mm.
Hey bro I did the same on my license plate, can you share what plate baking did you you use? I bought one at amazon but the description did not match , wider than expected
I had a license plate backing from my Suzuki C50 that I wasn't using and I repurposed that. I think any plate backing the size of an plate should work though.
Lock tight?
?
What si the part number?
Part numbers are in the video description
Why did you choose 11.5”? Progressive website shows 11” for bobber twenty.
@danielbernier3817 i figured the extra 1/2 inch wouldn't change the looks but could add another 1/2 inch of travel.
@@MessyGarageBMW ahhhhh ok. Didn’t realize you could go up a notch on the shocks. I’m just starting my research into this but near pulling the trigger on some 11.5 444’s.
Thanks.
Love that green btw
hard to decide since they are so expensive, cant tell much difference to justify the cost
The difference is huge when you are riding. The swingarm smoothness of the progressives exponentially translate to a smoother feel. I regret I waited so long for this upgrade.
So good video. stock shocks are horrible to my ass. after watch i purchase 444-4247. i look forward to save my ass progressive 444. 아. 씌발 엉덩이 아파 죽겠네 진짜. 내가 진짜 장거리 뛰다가 거시기에 쥐나고 엉덩이에 멍나는건 바버타고 첨이다. so.... ADIOS!
LOL...................."fucking with it"........................
How much
Links for parts i used are in the video description.
@@MessyGarageBMW ty da😎✌
Oh no the socks are no longer available..
They see out of stock but they should restock them at some point. There are also other sites that may have some.
WTF?
Can any one compare these vs indian fox, I'm not sure which I should go with www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-us/shop/accessories/performance/shocks/2881790-463/
I considered the Indian ones also but they are closer on par with these from my understand but much more expensive. To me it ended up with bang for buck and these aren't the cheapest but you get a lot of value. The Indians price would push me to look at ohlins if I was already dead set on dropping that much. Just my opinion and thought process as I chose this direction.
