- What distinguishes the greats is the will to keep going when others start dropping off and to see through what they believe in when it’s at its bleakest moment. And this persistence requires developing mental toughness-the ability to embrace uncertainty and discomfort while negotiating the way forward.
For most mental toughness is hard won. But once you cultivate this ability, the playing field shifts in your favor. You just have to determine what’s sustainable and what’s worth seeing through. The effective strategies in this video, with their roots in Stoicism, can help you to begin developing greater resilience.

People are criticizing you for repetition. Ignore them. Your overall message is the type that requires repetition and frequent reinforcement.
Very true.
Yes. Yes. 1000x yes. How does one complain about a free coach reminding you of what you may already know but need reminders and accountability! Keep it up!
Couldn’t agree more. The dopamine driven need for constant streams of new information leaves no room for assimilation of it.
I’m the type of person that needs to be reminded how good things are when I’m feeling stressed. I agree with this
Agreed. I forgot most of what I learn 😆
1. Embrace difficulty in everything that you seek.
2. Read books to talk with the dead.
3. Reframe the perspective into something that can take the burden.
4. Treat the body vigorously so that it is not disobedient with the mind.
5. Focus on stuffs that's up to you.
6. Cultivate courage by progressively overloading in stress, difficulty and friction towards the things that are important.
You probably won't see this, but Ryan you honestly changed my life. Thank You.
Strong mind , strong habits ❤❤❤
"I don't believe in myself. I have evidence." I love that powerful statement.
“Any person capable of angering you becomes your master; he can anger you only when you permit yourself to be disturbed by him.” - Epictetus
This has always resonated with me .. taking ownership for your emotions & not letting them be dictating by others is very powerful and useful to anyone no matter what phase of life they are in.
I TURN 85 TODAY AND SO FAR "A C ALEB DAR OF WISDOM' IS THE BEST GIFT.YET. THANKS
Happy Belated Birthday!
Shattering your ankle in a million pieces and having to stop doing what you love for over a year is also a great way to develop a super strong mindset. Although I don't recommend it :-) Nice videos!
Never stop sending it
Mindset creates the shift in the discipline we all need or seek.. enjoy the process stay the course, peace my stoics ~ 🤞🏽
Stoic thinking is saving my life right now. Without it, I know I'd be dead. It's the only thing that's kept me moving forward.
Its also saved me from my demons
Stay strong and watch the thoughts they are not always truth. Be open stay health and blessed. You can get through it

I’m glad we are learning a little towards greatness.
"If one accomplishes some good though with toil, the toil passes, but the good remains; if one does something dishonorable with pleasure, the pleasure passes, but the dishonor remains." - Musonius Rufus (the teacher of Epictetus)
Having the courage to fight through hardship is what I try to learn right now - by moving to the other side for the world for my PhD, and starting a RUclips channel about philosophy,.It is scary and frightening, but it is one of the best ways to improve as a person. Thanks for this inspiring video Ryan!:)
Another good one! Ryan this year I picked up a copy of the daily stoic, which prompted me to read the obstacle is the way, and now discipline is destiny. Am subscribed to the daily news letter - the study of stoicism has been slowly changing me & my life. I’m accomplishing more, mostly mentally - than ever before. Pairing it with my religious practices has been insanely beneficial. Thank you for studying and then putting your findings into the world! Hugely valued by many.
I watch your videos in the morning to hype me up! 😂
I don’t think I have ever heard of the Word STOIC, but now that I have heard and listened, it all begins NOW.
Thank you for this video.
I'm a buddhist. Stocism fits completely honestly.
Is there a big overlap?
@@itsmichaelmai Not really.
I was told “ Keep calmly knowing change”. I hate the unpredictability of life but it is what it is. All about acceptance.
Thank you for sharing all these years!!
Need to listen to this every day. Thank you, Ryan.

Great meditation to start the day=]. I love the “conversations with the dead” mantra- that exactly why I have groomed a healthy library of thought leaders going back through time=]

Know what you can control and know what you can't.
This is the ultimate and the primary principal of Stoicism.
Been working on my mental strength the last 5 years. Best of luck to you all out there!
How is it going?
1.Cultivate bravery
2.Do exercise and treat the body the right way
3.Focus on what we can control
4.Do hard things and push yourself
5.Read things from dead people
6.
Just amassing

Josh Peck is a Stoic now. Amazing
I VOTE yes to the beard Rayan 🙌🏾 in honor of Marcus
Tolstoy's calendar of wisdom was the prominent influence in the life of Henry Charles Bukowski on practical matters.
Bukowski is a labeled as a nilialist in pop culture. We could easily refer to Epictetus as a nilialist. Removing the extential bias yields a lesson, no matter how painful.
I have a cold hear to a lot. However, You come though to my brain.
Stoicism is a mindset.
Struggle would determine if you are stoic and mentally strong.❤
I just started reading _The Obstacle Is The Way_ and now I feel weird because Ryan's still alive 🤣
Same bruh😁
Excellent video. I will look for your name on audio books
So cool.
Summary for my future self
1. Embrace difficulty in everything that you seek.
2. Read books to talk with the dead.
3. Reframe the perspective into something that can take the burden.
4. Treat the body vigorously so that it is not disobedient with the mind.

Can I find the image at 0:22 unblurred anywhere please? It's beautiful!
I know a guy with a broken body that can't walk anymore and in constant pain but is one the strongest men I've ever know .
Woah, Ryan I love your new grown beard, man
I live in LA. I have sat in that traffic. I have pissed other drivers off cus they see I'm enjoying myself. I consider it a golden time of chilling with my fave tunes and either a Diet Coke or a cup of coffee, depending upon the weather. I like heavier traffic cus it means people are not driving like speed maniacs and we may all get where we're going in one piece. I especially came to enjoy it when I am alone in the car, cus I'm a mom and it would be the only time I get to myself. The only downside is if you have to use the toilet suddenly so always know places to get off for that purpose, but otherwise, Whoo Hoo! Crank the tunes, Baby and rock out and rock on!
Bible and Quran, has some of the best teachings from Noah and Abraham’s tribulations, Moses practices, David’s reproving, Solomon’s proverbs, and wisdom, the prophets tutoring, to Jesuses parables and teachings are stellar with Muhammad’s discipleships and practices as well.
The same with the Bagavahd Gita and the Dhammapada, with also philosophical tie ins of Confucius, laotzu and practical philosophies are also a stellar practices and upkeeping, with Shiva, Krishna and Gautama Buddha with so much great teachings on how to live rightly, utilizing the four noble truths and eight fold path of the dharma chakra, go forth with such a good rhythm and modem in modern structure with the Japanese fundamentals of ikigai.
To also the stoics, epicureans, a from marcus Aurelius meditations to the norsemens havamal, they have such good practices.
From pragmatic, practical and mystical rhythms. From Joel osteen and various pastors, to zakir and other imams as for Christian’s and muslims, than you sadguruh and dailai lama for Buddhist and Hindus, you also have Ryan holiday for stoics, amazing stuff.
The mind a garden that yearns to be cultivated
2:18 that background looks just like Grand Rapids Michigan
Can @DailyStoic share the link of "meditations" from there are lot of options.
Keep em up!! Love it. Except for the “stoics” use. If I’m calm I’m not A calm. But yeah it’s great stuff!
🙏🏽
