The little digs at Katarzyna’s name and saying she had an ‘Eastern European tackiness’ were so incredibly rude and off putting. It’s like little kids making fun of anything that’s different, “oh her name sounds different than ours ha ha,” it’s not funny, it’s just xenophobic.
I found that so awkward to watch. Not like this show is in any way professional......but so unprofessional oh my god.
Yeah that sounded like blatant racism coming from people in a position of power. The judges are so hypocritical how they hold the models to an impossible standard, but then they act like entitled, school yard bullies.
From what I remember Tyra did this the entire season - she constantly mispronounced her name despite her correcting them.
It reminded me of ALL of my elementary school days where a group of girls would make fun of my name.. trying to make it rhyme with things but of course they couldn’t pronounce it properly so really botched it and made it rhyme with paprika.. not funny when you’re 6-11 yrs old. High school was a relief at age 12! No one made fun of my name, grade 7 in a school where none of my former classmates went helped a lot!
Exactly, I hated it. My name is very similar so I was really embarrassing behavior for me. And moreover Poland isn't even part of Eastern Europe, it's central - even if it was, what's wrong with it? What's this "Eastern European tackiness", Paulina? I really don't get this dig, especially comming from her, she's Czech and should have known better in my opinion. But it's really TV so I'm probably asking for much...
I feel like the judges on this show take serious and personal offense whenever a model reminds them that models are also human beings. Like something about the moment when she says her contact came out...J looked like he had just been personally insulted and then made sure to let her know her humanity doesn't (and shouldn't) matter. I think any friction the models provide to their own objectification really makes these judges angry and that's alarming to say the least

The only way she would have done that photo shoot , would be to remove the contacts beforehand . But as mentioned if she's got bad eye sight then she'd struggle still .

I agree. I don't think it's really necessary to treat models like dirt. We don't do that with any other equipment that is used for creative purposes.
If they don't really see the humanity of the models, fine. But if they were an artist with paintbrushes and canvas, they would take care of that equipment. They wouldn't abuse their paintbrushes by leaving them wet or at the wrong temperature, or full of paint or whatever other analogy they'd use.
If the model is their equipment with which to make beautiful artwork (and potentially a lot of money), they need to treat them well in order to get the best work out of them. That doesn't have to mean babying them, just treat them with respect.
They did not eliminate Claire because she face planted without permission. They eliminated her because she was protesting behind the scenes. This was confirmed by Claire herself in her interview with Oliver Twixt.

Speaking from experience, Claire almost definitely had a concussion after this. She fell with her neck at an angle and that can be extremely dangerous. They should’ve had her checked out. As far as her being told not to do it, all Jay said was “you don’t have to.” That’s completely different than “don’t do that.”
Also, whiplash. She said her neck hurt.
They should have gotten her checked but an adult shouldn’t need to be told not to face dive into the ground.
I agree that what was aired was just Jay saying “you don’t have to.” But I bet they had people behind the scenes who told them to not do that, notice Tyra didn’t say Jay told her to not do that. Not that I don’t think that ANTM isn’t exploitative and toxic but seeing as this was almost a collaboration I would hope the people in charge of the other show would have said something regarding the model’s safety.
agreed, it should have been clear, don't do it, especially when the people who were demonstrating, fell and pounded onto that thing pretty hard, making it seem like it was ok to do so
@@carr0760 Whiplash is no joke. I had it so bad one time I couldn't lift my head up. I had to put my hand under my chin to life it up. The pain was severe and it went all the way to the left side of my head and up to about half way, and it started to feel like it was falling asleep. You know that feeling I'm talking about, I'm sure. I didn't see a doctor for it when I clearly should have but I am going for a brain scan anyway to see if something in my brain is causing my migraines.
I hated the way they mocked Katarzyna. Mocking her name and saying she had "Eastern tackiness". So disrespectful of another culture.

Obviously in this case she's a white eastern European woman but the deliberate misnaming of people with names that are different or "ethnic" is a super common microaggression and its disappointing any time that behavior happens. She should not have had to shorten her name to make it more palatable, and I'm glad she didn't.

The funny thing is, Paulina Porizkova is an Eastern European herself, despite holding dual Swedish and US citizenship, she was actually born in Prostějov, Czechoslovakia, a city that later became part of Czech Republic.
Prostejov already was part Czech Republic, just with added Socialist till 1990, which was part of federation with then similarly socialist Slovakia.
And her husband left her high and dry.

What I want to imply is that Czechoslovakia later splitted into Czech Republic and Slovakia, which Czech Republic being her birth country since she was born in Prostějov.

@@dg7666 The ignorance of them for always mocking her name does not sit well with me at all, even to this day. Her name is Katarzyna, not Katerzina or Katerzenia or Neutrogena, it's Katarzyna. Is learning and trying to pronounce a certain name too hard for them to do or something? Even Katarzyna kept correcting them multiple times yet they still misspelled her name. Here's the thing that I don't really get: Almost every cycle they always asked some girls to change their name or shorten it so it would easier to remember but they didn't ask Katarzyna to go with Kat or Kate for short, they simply wanted her to keep that name on the show just for them to made fun of it. Not nice at all, they definitely did it on purpose.
Paulina Porizkova, an Eastern European, is so two faced. She will talk down to these new models struggling to succeed in ridiculous challenges, yet cried to the press about her anxiety and panic attacks. I have no empathy for these judges when they STILL show no genuine remorse for their behaviour.
many of the model's have said Paulina is very nice but I have noticed that she is only nice to models she is not threatened by, katarzyna clearly intidimated her because they are both eastern european and she was younger and prettier than her

Tyra really showed, that she didn’t care if any of models got hurt, very sad since she calls herself a big sister to them.

Did you notice how they cut the video? Claire looked surprised when Tyra and was about to respond but they cut whatever she said.
Another important thing to remember is that Lauren wore glasses until the makeover episode of this season (I don’t remember how many episodes before this one that was though) so she wasn’t even that used to wearing contacts yet! I’ve worn them for almost 12 years and there’s no way I’m opening my eyes underwater 😂 imagine a dry piece of plastic on your eyeball- that’s basically what it feels like
I'll never understand how people can actually get those things onto their eyeballs 😫 I tried as a kid and just ended up getting more glasses because all I managed to do was poke my eyes for 45 minutes straight

As someone of Eastern European heritage with Katarzyna as a family name I’m appalled that they thought it was okay to treat her like that.
Refusing to learn how to say someone's name is gross. They 100% did Whitney wrong with that picture.

@@isaaclim8645 There are certain models on the show like Fatima and Leila Goldkuhl, who were so clearly a cut above the rest. It helps a lot when the model is fantastic.

Most of the photoshoots in cycle 11 were top notch. Jessica should look into cycle 11 more since she really liked the natural disasters shoot for example.

Wasn't my one of my favorite shoots, but I will say it's one of Jay's best episodes where he's actually helping the girls with constructive criticism. Also, I never noticed until later how passive aggressive Paulina actually was. Lol
She was downright aggressive. I'm guessing it was her who called Lauren a Frankenstein (which is funny because Frankenstein in the novel is the doctor who makes the monster. Pretty sure it's not the reference she was looking for).
And the "Eastern European tackiness" line to Katarzyna. Like she can help the fact that she has a pretty face and is of Eastern European descent. And like having a pretty face and body was not what made Paulina famous, despite *her* Eastern European features.
Paulina has nothing to contribute to the judging part.

I didn't like Paulina and Tyra here (talking about Frankenstein and calling Katarzyna Neutrogena) but I really liked how positive Jay was here, seemed like he was really healpful too instead of the non-advice he gives other times.

They essentially hate Katarzyna for being hot while also being smart. It's like they're scared she might feel like she's smarter than them, so they'll knock her down a few pegs even before she has the chance of ever showing that she's actually nice and wouldn't behave like she's superior.
The insults at the end were so mean. Calling a woman to her face awkward and Frankenstein, while mocking her, wasn't the right move.

Its particularly ridiculous when you consider the next thing they say to her is "Maybe get some confidence!" Like how is she supposed to feel confident after that? And she needs to show personality or whatever, when they probably have like three days between shoots, perfect amount of time to get personality and confidence. Poor girl is set up to fail.

@@thisisraggedyandy when you actually think about it though, they cast 1000's of girls to be on the show and if they wanted someone perfect they would not have selected her, so if they chose her to be in the show why keep bashing her for what she can't control it's not like she suddenly started acting like that, they saw her audition tape, they did screenings. this whole show is fucked
"I'm going to slide in"... THEN SHE JUST DROPS, there's no slide about it. I'm impressed about the control of her reflexes, because I feel like the natural reaction would be to at least stick the elbows or arms out!
I think it makes sense why Claire would try to fall onto it because it seemed like the stunt people were doing it earlier in the episode (when they were watching them from below). However, they obviously knew how to fall correctly as to not hurt themselves. Also, Jay said “You don’t have to” to sliding, not to falling. They counted her off, which makes it seem like they wanted them all to fall onto it and then stopped that (directly pointing it out to the next girl) when Claire got hurt
Thats exactly what happened. Other contestants said that they were told to fall onto the plastic, then after she got hurt, they told the rest of them to slide in

I'm in two ways about the safety of this photoshoot. On one hand, unless they cut it, a demonstration should've been shown but on the other, why the heck would you body slam into thick plastic face first?

thats a random thing from this season that made me so mad, them never pronouncing Katarzyna's name correctly, like i understand it being a 'foreign' name, but seriously once you have been told 3-4 times the proper way, theres no excuse to keep messing it up. (this is episode SEVEN of the season) It's played as a 'hahaha funny name weird i cAnT eVen reMembeR how to saY it xP" through the season until she was eliminated- its plain disrespectful to just flat out not care about how they addressed her and i get even more heated in retrospective viewing.
I want a compilation of all the examples tyra shows off without using words. I feel like there is at least a good, solid hour's worth of content of tyra silently making faces, holding breaths, wiggling about in random directions, smeyesing/smizing, being "GlAmOuRoUs", blinking, and just generally uncomfortable reenactments of past photoshoots and there wouldn't have to be a single word said by her.

From the entire series, I bet you could find a few hours for sure, especially when she's being FIERCE or present by opening her eyes more and sitting up straight lol.

This is one of my favorite ANTM photoshoots; they look like watercolor paintings to me and I think of it as the "watercolor" photoshoot. I was 17 when this cycle originally aired and at the time, remember thinking "well Mr. Jay told Claire not to do it and she did it oh well." But looking back, saying 'you don't have to' is a lot different than 'don't do that.' It also would've been helpful to have a demonstration beforehand
There was a demonstration hence why Clair slammed her head in the first place!
Yeah the women in the demonstration were flopping all over the place and made it look easy. I think Claire underestimated the hardness of the material maybe? She just wanted to have fun is all and they are making her out to seem stupid or horrible for it. Accidents are going to happen. She still did the shoot.

Jay told her she didn't have to slide in when she said that's what she was going to do, not that she didn't have to flop down - that was actually why she flopped like she saw the other women doing instead of sliding in safely like she originally intended. He'd actually made it sound like sliding in was not necessary or as though her idea to do so was dumb. Go back and listen to it again.

It always amazes me how the judges blame it all on the models, when they are pros and they know that all these photos require teamwork. There's the model, the photographer, the director... But somehow it's only the model's fault if the picture is not good. How??? Also, the models are always at fault - if they listened to the directions they were given, if they didn't listen, if the shot is bad, if the shot is good (like in this example - "you were struggling". Okay, and? You got the shot, so???). The abuse in this show is over the roof
Miss Jay called her Neutrogena first. Then the other judge corrected him, but Tyra repeated Neutrogena because apparently xenophobia is funny...
this was one of the super artsy shoots. Shame that they edited it to make Claire look reckless though.

Couldn't they make it Kasia (like for another Polish ANTM contenstant), would be easier to prononunce, noone in Poland is called Katarzyna in a casual conversation (unless of course she wanted to be called by her name, but i'm not sure that was the case here).

They did not tell them at first not to jump in, they encouraged them to do as the demonstration showed, but after Claire hurt herself they made it look like she did it, even if they said not to do it. Also she voiced her opinions on the show, and made like a mini strike because they were not fed properly, so they wanted to get rid of her. Dude, Fatima’s photo is so artistic and mysterious and poetic…ugh I love it! It literally gave me chills. The pose and movement, the concept, the lighting, the colors and toning.
Definitely. The first thought that popped in my head was 'siren' because it was so beautiful, graceful, and mysterious like you said. It just drew me in instantly.
Im sorry i usually agree that ANTM has done some shady stuff, but what sane person would let themselves fall face first onto the floor/plastic like that ?!? it was def claires fault.
I think the plastic could easily look more bouncy, so maybe she thought it would give - like falling on stretchy fabric.

I really believe Tyra should come up with a new Cycle of the series to redeem herself and formally apologise for all the shi* she's put the models through. I would certaintly be watching of course.. Can you imagine you doing the reviews? THEN and NOW... would be AWESOME!

Why only Tyra? Jay Manuel also put many of those models through hell. Same with some of the producers and judges. Redemption should not only apply to the host of the show.
It wouldn't work. TV needs to have drama and each episode must be interesting. If they make the photo shoots more in line with what modeling really is like, it might not be dynamic enough.
Also, Tyra and crew don't need to do a season to apologize. They can do a press conference and post on social media. I think Jay attempted to previously but it came out as "it is all Tyra's fault. I didn't want to do it. I didn't have a choice" blah blah blah.
Additionally, they might accidentally fall back into old patterns if they make a new season even if they don't want to.
I don’t think Tyra should do anything that she can profit from.

So I had a thought about the shots they pick. We all see the gorgeous poses (like Katarzyna) the models do then they display a busted pose. As a photographer, I've messed up shots before when the model nails an emotion and it's my bad. What if that happens a lot on this show? Missed focus or overblown and instead they choose to salvage a worse shot and blame the model?
It's either this or they choose a bad one on purpose...
I've seen a *lot* of overblown shots used on this show - and they *still* blame the model. 🤨 They've literally blamed the model for the position of the sun.

this is a reality show, theres producers creating dramatic plots for episodes and the overall season's storylines. they pick the bad or the good pictures, according to the story they decide to have. is it really that shocking?..😅

Girl said “I’m gonna slide in” and then belly flops. Like how did her body not kick in and try to stop her fall? This shoot is ONE of my favorites because I love the concept. The colors, the underwater type look, the flowy outfits. I wonder how this could have turned out in a different environment other than ANTM.
As for the haircut… knowing ANTM they could have cut her hair right before the shoot to throw her off, but they also could have just been saving money because a photo shoot is where the girls would next be seeing the hair stylists.

They were always pronouncing Katarzyna's name wrong and never bothering to listen to her when she would demonstrate how to pronounce it. It was so frustrating! Deliberately mispronouncing a person's name is so careless.
On cycle 5 of ANTM, the stylists cut Jayla's hair before her photoshoot, after the judges disliked her makeover of long extensions. Also, Cassandra was given a Mia Farrow haircut, and Tyra said she wasn't happy with it, and wanted to cut her short hair even shorter. This caused Cassandra to famously quit the competition. I believe you looked at the photos, but not the actual shoot, where Cassandra quit. It was the fashion victims photoshoot.
I think Claire's photo was gorgeous, but they legit may have eliminated her for the medical liability reason you joked about. If it was really a pattern with her to go slightly overboard while trying to impress, to the point that she was causing injuries to herself that could theoretically be blamed on the show, they may have preferred to only keep the models around who would reel themselves in to the point of safety.
They would to have signed a contract that waived liability for any thing that happens to them during the show.
Also, after she hurt herself, she was given time to recover, then went back and did the exact same thing that got her hurt. I wouldn't even blame them for getting annoyed with her, especially after she pulls stuff like this and then complains that it hurts.
@@veejonesify The thing is, sometimes judges overrule bits of contracts and hold employers accountable for things the employer tried to excuse themselves from accountability for in the contract. Not everything an employer puts in a contract can actually be enforced, if a situation ends up in court.
I'm not saying this situation would be one of those, I'm just saying it's a reason why any organization might be nervous regardless of what someone signed in a contract. Maybe if the show kept her on and she kept hurting herself, and there were a later court case over some serious injury, a judge may later rule that the show had plenty of evidence this girl couldn't be trusted to conduct herself safely on set, and should have let her go rather than keep her in a situation where she's causing herself serious harm.
Again, who knows. Just, I'd believe that lawyers might've had a nervous conversation about some such possibility. At the end of the day this show exists to generate profits for its creators, not to actually care which contestant 'wins'. I have *zero* doubts they'd prioritize legally protecting themselves over judging the competition in a 'purist' fashion, based on photos alone.

It's insane how different the concept ended up being from what the example was! I thought they were gonna be jumping on the plastic thing too, I completely understand why the first girl faceplanted. It looks like they got no instructions at all until after that happened.
To be honest.. I feel like the models should have known better than to fall face first onto an unknown surface. Clearly she either thought there was more water, or that it was a softer (?) surface.... idk. I always thought it was stupid that she hurt herself like that, it seems like she was trying to show off. That being said, I saw little to no empathy in Jay's face. He was ready to keep pushing through the shoot and ignore her stupid move but she was in too much pain and he HAD to acknowledge it. In my opinion he's always been really bad at faking empathy. He says the right things but his eyes look dead while he's talking.

Wait....The show had her saying "I'm gonna slide in" which would have been safer. But Jay said she didn't have to. So she didn't slide in, she just fell in. And she got blamed AND injured for that. And yes you DO need a crash course for anything involving physical work with water on an unusual surface. Because she didn't have one, she got hurt, and another girl had contacts fall out.
In fairness we did see the 2 people demonstrating at the beginning, slamming their bodies down pretty hard onto that surface and so she may have though it was part of the challenge to throw herself down & thought it was softer or bouncier that it actually was. Plus we don’t know what they did or didn’t tell the models off camera so it’s hard to tell if she was actually told not to do that since we only see Jay say “you don’t have to,” not DON’T do that.

I absolutely LOVED Claire's photo. Literally #1 for me out of ALL photos I've seen from ANTM. She is a STUNNING woman and her photographs translate almost 100% of that. They did her SO WRONG with that. I hope she's gotten more work since then than she even would have after winning.
To be fair to Jay - and yes, he is usually trash - he did say straight away that she doesn't have to slide in, she chose to slam down. In this one instance I don't think he was in the wrong there, he didn't say 'faceplant the floor' he said you need to be face down but don't hit against your nose

Would love to see you review some of the other countries. Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model (2011) S07E11 has some interesting judging. One model smashes the acting and poses as instructed for the photoshoot, and is then criticised for following those instructions.

Besides subtly judging Whitney for being a plus size model, she was always the chosen one, and they almost always loved everything she did. Not to say she was bad in any way. It just felt like she was clearly a favorite despite whatever pictures they chose of her week to week or what have you.

I remember watching this episode. They started the photoshoot by having professionals jump and stomp in the water, then specifically told the girls that's NOT what they were going to be doing. Claire was trying to show off a little and paid the consequences.

As for Claire, I think they punished her for sliding in despite them telling them not to and that’s why they’ve sent her home. Her photo wasn’t the weakest

I can feel for that one girl who has a different name. Some people have a hard time spelling & pronouncing my name. I have no problem telling someone how to pronounce it if they're not sure or say it incorrectly just out of ignorance, but I can't stand someone else making fun of a person's name. i’ve come to realize that mr jay only really directs when he actually likes the shoot. i feel like when he knows it can’t be a portfolio piece is when he’s like meh. but this is a cool concept that could be a piece and that’s when he directs just in case so he can say he did that.

I used to ALWAYS have long hair. The longest I had it was to my knees. I donated it 3x, but never went shorter than about 6in beyond my shoulders. Than year 2021 in December I got cancer and lost ALL my hair. I thought I could never get over it, but honestly, it only took about 4mo.
She literally said slide, the man did not think she would face plant herself into the plastic. That's why the other girls were told not to do that. Also I think the break was just in case it was something that would pass, I think if she asked or said it was worse they would have got her help. He seemed genuinely concerned and asked her if she was sure she was good to go.
Watching this while trying to sleep and busted out laughing at that intro by Mr. Jay 😆

The way they are making fun of that girl's name is disrespectful. I have a name that is difficult to pronounce,, "Ruciana", pronounced "Ruchuna" so I know what it's like when people mess up your name. That is why it is nice when people try to say it correctly.
People always say my name.wrong too even though they really shouldn't, but because they're not familiar with it they do, usually repeatedly.
I like how you point out that there are so many other people on a photoshoot who contribute to the quality of the photos and how it's not always the models fault. I know that modeling is the point of the show but they really went around blaming these girls for things they had no control over.
Jessica you and I are literally soul sisters I swear! I was also a competitive swimmer who wore glasses and my mom was against contacts when I was younger because of eye infections etc so I was often swimming blind. My main event was backstroke and having to remember the amount of strokes it would take me to reach the wall because everything was blurry. I totally forgot this once in the heat of a race and bashed my head on the wall I was seeing stars just like Claire 🤣
