The fact that not one RN battleship was preserved is an indication of the utter disregard our Parliament and successive Governments have for our armed forces, and by implication those that serve in them. Surely Warspite should have been preserved as a museum ship, or even the very last Battleship ever completed, HMS Vanguard? Utterly shameful and so very sad. Imagine what an attraction and a mark of respect such a capital ship would be today as a museum piece on the Thames..with perhaps HMS Belfast in Belfast itself?
Does anyone else find it deeply disturbing that the Royal Navy - The greatest most prestigious Navy to ever sail - Did not preserve ONE Dreadnought, Super-Dreadnought or Aircraft Carrier for Museum duties? It's almost like the British are ashamed of their naval history.
No. These old hulks are far too costly to maintain. They would not pay their way as museum ships. They should be ripped apart for scrap value and melted down.
I quite agree. What was once the greatest navy in the world has all but vanished. One problem is that our navy has been so long-standing that it's necessary to be selective about what can be saved. Victory is still preserved along with several other classics from various naval epochs. From WW2 only two light cruisers remain, and nothing from WW1. Efforts were made to save HMS Vanguard, the last and most modern battleship that was completed too late to see action, but the government of the day flatly refused. This attitude isn't just confined to warships, though. Our fine merchant heritage is also shunned, as is our aviation history, and many wonderful pieces of classic architecture have likewise fallen victim to bureaucratic contempt. Just Google "St Pancras Station" and look at that soaring Victorian gothic folly - second only to the Houses of Parliament, and try to imagine the mindset of those who would've put it to the wrecking ball. Yet only the most determined private lobbying prevented its loss...
HMS Anson claimed a battle honour for the Arctic 1942-43. Does anyone know if the they actually fired any guns? The description I have read is it proved distant cover. Presumably that meant Anson was there in case a German ship appeared.
Paying American interest for second hand destroyers in order for the US to afford their lovely big aircraft carriers with the money. It was always a long term political goal of America to brake up Britain's Empire, the second World War provided the perfect solution.
The USS Texas is undergoing $35 million restoration work on taxpayer money in 2023. USS New Jersey received $5 million in 2023 for hull restoration every 20 years. The USS Olympia in Philadelphia is sinking because it needs about $10 million of work. It cost about $1 billion to safely deconstruct CVN65 Enterprise because of 8 nuclear reactors and toxic materials. It will cost about $12 billion to build the replacement CV80. People don’t have a clue on how much debt the Federal Government has.

Nelson should have been preserved until the future where it could be turned into a space battleship.
