      Better than the vanguard class? Though tbh ..you've never seenn what it looks like properly ....
      Having seen one out of water and served on them I can't agree

      @@wiggy5209 Vanguard are the original design for the Astute... they got the curves in the same places. Vanguard look good but the newer astute with the more curvy slimline tower and deck wins me over... i am also not a fan of large boats... the bigger they are... the more curves are replaced with straight lines.

    I love that the Royal Navy named a class of subs with a pun on a Rudyard Kipling quote from childrens' literature. Intelligent understated humour... how very British. Somebody on the panel that chose the name was a 'stute fish.

      Australia has not purchased new Astute's... They bought Virginia-class submarines... and one Pre-Owned Astute.
      Later, Australia will get new different submarines built by them and UK... They will not be Astute's... they will be unique builds.

      @@DavidOlver They have paid for initial development and started paying for the infrastructure, which is the start of the process of agreement.
      And why would you say that "UK should build them for Australia now" If you knew Australia has not paid for any? Or are you expecting the UK to build for free?

      @@babalonkie for free i never said that. we need them yesterday not in 15 to 20 years. America is building there subs as fast as they can and its not fast enough. The Astute is at the end of production and could start again. And give Britten the money it needs

      @@DavidOlver But Australia has never asked for a nuclear powered submarine until recently... and the UK has not even built it's own fleet yet... it still has 2 of it's own in construction. Nuclear submarines take longer to build than aircraft carriers... but make no mistake... Australia is getting one.

    I think Canada should buy this submarine, as Canada is currently sub shopping and the Canadian Prime Minister said that the Canadian Government is seriously considering acquiring nuclear powered submarines to patrol the Arctic waters under the ice.

      Canada has been sub shopping for years. I remember the CASP program in the 1980's. A tremendous amount of effort spent by potential submarine and equipment suppliers. Then they said Project cancelled !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Being built a about a mile behind my house here in Barrow in Furness. I have elements of the shipyard at virtually every compass point so I can say I live in the middle of the shipyard where the subs are built.😮

    How many days worth of food for the crew can the Astute class carry? And are they capable of replenishment at sea?

      Not really - for long trips we false decked with cartons of tinned goods and stuffed available space with stuff

    40 seconds mark - that’s my home…..Lochalsh. We have the British testing range for surface vessels, submarines and underwater weapons here….it’s called BUTEC. America has a similar range called AUTEC near the Bahamas.

    The UK should build at least 10 successor class nuclear attack subs. The Astute class subs have gone through a long process of working out the "bugs" in these boats, so a successor class would have a great, tested platform to start with and modify using the best current submarine technology that has been developed since the Astute class Astute-class program began in February 1986. That being said, the US should loan the UK the money necessary to build a successor class to the Astute class subs or commit to buying a few successor class attack subs for the US Navy...

    On the Royal Navy official website for HMS Astute it says on the main facts and figures page 100 personnel, 5 toilets and showers and 16000 tonne displacement... I think that is all we need to know. Could perhaps benefit from shedding a few pounds.

      The Astute weighs, 7800T submerged. The only sub for the RN that will displace close to 16000T is the under construction Dreadnought class

    The one thing that is good with the Royal Navy, this class of submarine. While surface vessels are diminishing. HMS Westminster next ? Along with HMS Montrose earlier this year .
    I have a spare Kayak if the Royal Navy needs it !

    Not much information ....What is the speed? Diving depth? How powerful is its sonar? Detection range? What about stealth? 6 torpedo types limited fire power... I am surprise it does not has Vertical Launch System? Don't think the Astute Class is better than the Virginia Class Block V or the Russian Yasen Class or the Chinese Type 95

      I can assure you
      We’ve 5 extremely well built machines in service
      6th is nearly ready to be launched and the 7th is well into the final stages of outfitting
      Both have superior/advanced nuclear electronics which the 5 in service will have installed/upgraded after HMS Agamemnon & HMS Agincourt is fully operational service
      I work in the DDH facility at BAE Systems Barrow

      Best submarines in the world. Wait until you see the Dreadnought class. Sorry you won't. But it's for your safety as well. Safety for the world's people are friends and allies around the world. We our starting to build a modern Royal Navy. We are still 6th or 5th worlds biggest global defence spenders on arms. I would rase it to 2.5 then 2.8 and then 3% to give more skilled jobs needed around all of the UK. Building better for the future. So are grandchildren can live in Peace. "Use the The Royal Navy Motto". It was the Pandemic that caused billions of dollars from every country around the world.
