  • Very happy birthday from our side to one of the best pacers India has ever produced, Javagal Srinath. As he turns 51, the pace-bowling stalwart opens up about how he has evolved into the role of a match referee, the Karnataka catalyst behind his international career, bowling at 150 clicks despite fitness not being a priority in his era, the relevance of reverse swing for the current crop of pacers, Mankading, and a whole lot more.

Happy birthday to one of the underrated legends of the game & the fastest bowler India has ever produced. Post retirement, he could have easily take up a more glamorous coaching/commentary stint, but decided to become an ICC Match Referee & always stayed behind the scenes. A true gentleman, I loved having this high quality conversation with him on #DRSWithAsh. Happy birthday, Sri Bhai.

That’s why batting was our hope and especially Sachin because he was talented, disciplined and played more sincerely compared to other batters of that generation.

Being a Mysurean myself, and having watched him develop from being a tearaway bowler in tennis ball cricket into one of the finest fast bowlers that the country produced, I was struck by one thing: his humbleness. His incites into the game was something, but what touched me most was his gratitude to his fellow players during his school, college and league days for helping him climb up the ladder. In other interviews I have heard him mention their names even. Inspite of acheiving so much, he has not forgotten his friends from Ramavilas Road and Gita Road, and his fellow players from Mysore Gymkhana. One call from them and I am sure he would willingly make time to come down to Mysuru to attend a function, though it be a small one.
That's Sri for you. A thorough gentleman from head to toe.

The 4 stalwarts of Indian cricket from Karnataka - Srinath, Prasad, Kumble and Dravid, had come to our school - Bishop Cottons (B'lore) in '98 to inaugurate the school's new sports complex and auditorium. After the function, we chased them to the car park for some photos and autographs and they obliged almost everyone, which was very sweet of them. I still remember when someone shouted, 'what's the secret of your success?', Srinath with a big smile said, 'Idly power', and, quite expectedly drew loud cheers and whistles. Btw, if you talk about simplicity, Srinath came in a Maruti 800 or a similar sized car. All 4 of them were extremely down to earth, spoke in Kannada whenever they got a chance and didn't have any of the 'international star' attitude. In summary, I can say, that, that day, these cricketers taught me that 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication'. ❤️

Fantastic as always! Srinath, Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad, Dravid - those days when Karnataka produced super fine gentlemen one after the other, still remains in Indian cricket fan's memories. As Srinath himself said, he was a lot more different and far more effective when he had other bowlers to come in and share the burden and also when technology and training methods improved. But still, he toiled so hard in those days when these things were not easily gettable for the Indian team. Now we understand why India were so ordinary in the 90's when touring abroad. And I absolutely adored the way Srinath spoke about education! MASTERCLASS!!!
