  • This is part two of the Nature Coast Orchid Society Show and Sale 2024. We continue showcasing the vendors and witnessing the pulling of orchid plants for judging. And yes, we purchased more plants.

Jim n Melana really are a wealth of orchid knowledge! We first met them at the Tamiami show and bought a bulbophyllum medusae from them that we cannot wait to see bloom! Jim later spoke at our Tropical Orchid Society meeting and we learned so much about Brassavolas. We were basically fan-girling when they became our very first wholesale vendor. We knew our planters would be in wonderful hands with them. We love their entire sweet family 🥰
Great content you two! I love how much time you spend with everyone to really get in depth conversations going. Quality over quantity ❤️

Hi, yes, we finally got to talk to Jim and Melana. Sorry about the audio. One microphone was acting up, and the one Vicky had was dying. It's so hard to keep the balance trying to keep the video on the short side and not edit out crucial information. Thanks for your comment ❤.

I never knew there was that much diversity in Dendrobium orchid!😮 Thanks you for spreading about the dangers of orchid poaching, and to buy from a trustful source. Also congrats on your new Encyclia! Sorry for the late reply, youtube glitched again😢.

in my opinion the worst thing about using ice cubes is that thy contain no nutrients. Water is the transport vessel to deliver nutrients. You cannot feed the plants any other time. If you give your phal an ice cube every 2 weeks you'd have 26 opportunities to feed the plant in a year. If just one of these is replaced with an ice cube that is 4% of the plants yearly fertilizing uptake ability wasted. As we know one cannot compensate by feeding more the rest of the year, one would burn the roots.
I know some people pride themselves on how litttle fertilizer they can get away with but just like there is no set amount of light any plant requires there is no set amount of fertilizer a plant requires.
Generally the more light, air, water and fertilizer we can get the plant to absorb, the better the results.
Like said one cannot increase the amount of fertilizer than what they require. Like mentioned if one replaces a watering with an ice cube that is 4% of it's yearly fertilizer or the equivalent of giving the plant 10 days of too little light.
The cold an ice cube gives off is negligible most of the times on a really hot day.
Again I know many would read this and disagree. But it would not stem from experience. That is just what novice orchid growers are going to pick up learning how to care for orchids online.
It always feels like I am trying to justify something vital when others like to think it is the least important aspect to growing.
If you think about the award winning orchids, what growers all have is water, air and light. That doesn't change much. What changes between growers is how they are watered and fertilized. And that makes the biggest difference.
So important or not, that is for everyone to decide.
I see so many growers treat their orchids like living beings and think they have feelings and can feel pain.
Orchids are plants and should be treated more like a car engine.
You keep it well serviced and it will run well. You let it run out of fuel or use the wrong fuel and it won't run as well.

Thanks, Tom, for your knowledgeable contribution to our channel. We wish we would be able to make a video of your collection and to be able to have you explain how you grow your orchids. Thanks so much.
