The Broken Empire is a really dark and really good series. Not for everybody because of some really disturbing sexual stuff in the beginning. MC is really fucked up in the head (of course, you learn why throughout the first book). Mark Lawrence is one of my favorite authors. I'm reading Grey Sister right now, and it's excellent so far.
This is probably one of my top 3 series. If anything Jorge was refreshing. Nowhere have I read a protagonist like his. It’s fantastic. And the twist in book 2 are great.
This sounds like an amazing series. It's nice to see some grittiness in the fantasy genre. Like you said, whenever people think of fantasy it 's usually unicorns and other fanciful creatures. This sounds refreshing.
I absolutely loved The Book of the Ancestor and this will likely be my next Mark Lawrence read. I've heard incredibly divisive things about it but not much shocks me anymore. Hopefully I enjoy it as much as you did!
Awesome review ! I could't get past the rape scene in Lords Foul's bane, tried it when I was 15 and then again at 28, I just couldn't get past it but I Loved Perfume, so go figure.Going to Jump into Prince of Thorns. Go Raiders! Pretty close to a must win against Arizona Sunday.
Sadly it looks like you'll have all 3,000 books reviewed before Mike's book review reads forgetting moon. I'm so sad for him. He's missing out on his favorite book.
hey brian have you read the other great grimdark 'prince' (to me, the far greater one) -- Prince of Nothing by R Scott Bakker out of curiosity? What are your thoughts on that one?

Fantastic review Brian, looking forward to reading it
I have the same issues with first person narration, though I can take it if it's done well. I did like Prince of Thorns.

People are so soft. It wasnt worse than the current state of the world.
I don't like first person, and especially following such a despicable sociopath.
