    Signalling is something everyone is doing all of the time. We are constantly leaking information about ourselves and our motives, but most of that information is involuntary.
    Expect to learn why signalling and status are intrinsically linked, how a standing next to a Lexus can increase a man's attractiveness, why putting 20 expensive pens on your desk is a smart idea, why young men play loud music out of their car and much more...

    When I was a PhD student my prof asked everyone to call him by his first name (it felt weird to call him Dr so and so). My committee asked me to 'write like a human' rather than trying to impress people with linguistic gymnastics. 'Your readers speak English and they understand you if you use simple terms'. It was also one of the top 3 or 4 schools worldwide in my field.

    I’d love to hear evo psych analysis of religion (especially the Abrahamic type, since that’s the kind I’m affected by still)… not only how it’s used for people of wealth and power but how it’s used for abusive power in homes and how it remains in the individual. I was raised in severe religion that was combined with spiritual abuse, sexism and physical abuse (so that encompasses emotional and mental too), and even once escaping religion, I still FEEL the affects in my body and mind. How I explained it was, even though now I have a new moral compass (I still believe in Creator just not many of the terrible ideas in Christianity) I was still being influenced by the old/wrong moral compass. Then I read an article the bared this out~ it said that even after people leave religion, they still FEEL the false guilt… they are still negatively influenced by it because they still feel the physiological affects in their bodies and so it affects their behavior. I’m wanting to find ways to escape this because I was taught that to have any goal besides serving men (and many other idiotic things) is a sin and so I feel stupid, strong guilt to this day. (Obviously I try hard to push through it and have in lots of ways but am still harmed by it.) Also, Id like to hear about how if women have extra emotions, how they may be more influenced by it. It’s so odd that a “God” that degrades women are more worshipped by women. I don’t think men would’ve ever gone to this religion except with the sexism. It’s the carrot of control over women for men I feel and for women it’s the FEAR of God-combined with worship. And then that sets up women to love men they are fearful of too. Thank you ☀️I’m loving your show!!! I think evo psych can be used to heal humanity and make relationships between men and women better! I do hope you can have John Grey on!

    Great discussion. I enjoy the topic. At 1:50, You are saying that we don't do things to impress friends or attract a partner, or make us look good to others. Then the very next sentence you said "Often it's like this car makes me feel good and that's why I want to buy this car. We don't do things just because it feels good, it has to have some social payoff". -- Isn't this a contradiction? I'm having a hard time understanding what is being said here.

    • @ashlieperez3755
      @ashlieperez3755 2 года назад +3

      The way I understood what he said is that we are often in denial of our own motivations, and it’s easier to say “I’m doing this bc it makes me feel good, not because I care what other people think.” When the reality is that we present ourselves in a certain way to control how people view us, and when people view us the way we want to be viewed, that makes us feel good.

    • @oiuyuioiuyuio

    This makes me wonder if the reason young children will psychologically bully eachother is because (from a primal standpoint) they are simply engaging in the social version of rough play, but without respect for the concept that though the reaction is not as immediate, emotional pain can and does have a longer lasting effect versus that of physical pain. Of course this kind of rough play being almost an experiment to determine hierarchy, kids will often go after a test subject who is found to be weaker than them ie someone who is innately more naive, gullible, or inarticulate. Most certainly doesn't excuse the behavior or erase the trauma one can garner from being on the receiving end, but might shed light on or even bring closure to those wondering "why?"

    I find his explanation of peacocks and peahens to be both naive and misleading. It assumes several things which I believe have not been substantiated in any way, anywhere.
    The idea that the peacock is aware he is impressing females assumes not only self-consciousness, but assumes that he is also aware of the consciousness of the peahens. And the idea that either the peacock or peahen has the knowledge that copulation can/will result in offspring is to me absurd. (As far as I can tell, there are a growing number of humans that don't fully understand this concept.)
    It would be a better description to say that the peacock with the bigger, brighter display is ACTUALLY healthier and more fit for survival and therefore is more likely to breed successfully more often than inferior peacocks, resulting in more successful offspring. These offspring are then likely to share either the father's physical characteristics or the mother's sexual behaviors. Having female offspring that share a common behavior to mate with bigger/brighter tails further reinforces continuing reproductive success of those bigger/brighter tails.

    • @wadirkargar2249
      @wadirkargar2249 3 года назад +3

      It’s not self conscious knowledge but innate or more like instinct just like what birds of paradise do. But the peacock thing, I don’t like it’s a common example but some studies show that an impressive tail signifies good immune system etc we don’t know the complete answer. A better term to use would be zahavian signalling.
