    Undead Labs made it; Fox will review it!
    Lethal Zone, the new "ultra-hardcore" difficulty added to surpass even that of Nightmare Zone brought with it a number of changes to push State of Decay 2 into a "doomed" existence, but did Undead Labs succeed?
    Is Lethal Zone ultra-hardcore?
    Is Lethal Zone fun?
    Are you ready for the Lethal Zone?

    Im not super critical of SOD2 these days because it was a cheap game when it came out and Undead Labs is a small team. But I feel like people mainly want harder and harder difficulties because they'd like there to be MORE to the game. Like I think lethal would be perfectly difficult if the game was a bit more dynamic and had more to do. And I do enjoy the game, but it also is what it is.

      I think SoD2 has largely remained the same. It's sad when compared to the progress of other survival games like Don't Starve, Oxygen Not Included, Grounded, and other completed games like The Forest. They showed far more evolution.
      UL is basically just...

    They've introduced blood plague as the big solution to the RNG of sickness in SoD 1. If I remember it correctly back in the promotion days prior to SoD 2's release they've stated that they've got a lot of bad feedback for the RNG and helplessness against the original plague.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  3 года назад +21

      It's one of those things where the playerbase complaining about that was wrong. The RNG of the disease system, the hopelessness, that is exactly what captured the mythos of the zombie condition.
      Pathogens don't always have an absolute cure. That's just reality, and if your goal is to simulate a zombie apocalypses, well, you're going to have to make some players sad in order to really sell the apocalypse.

    Something I liked to do with lethal zone was to turn off my hud. It not only was more immersive but it hid my health and blood plague meter. So I had to actually listen to my survivors when their stamina was getting too low or when the blood plague was getting worse. It was really interesting to play like that and it’s definitely harder but way more interesting

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  3 года назад +4

      I don't find the loss of HUD to be very immersive because IRL you have a greater sense of perception that is equivalent to a HUD.
      IRL, you can feel how tired you are a lot more intimately.
      IRL, you can feel how shitty from a disease just by existing.
      IRL, you have far more accurate surround sound senses,
      IRL, you have a greater sense of the passing of time and a greater sense of direction etc.
      The HUD is just there to compensate for the intimate lack of human senses.

    Great video, most of the points are perfect.
    What I figured out is that UL is basically "afraid" to hurt the players.
    In Sod1, the sickness system could have been good, but I never lost a character to the sickness except the scripted one in many campaigns and breakdown levels.
    In Sod2 I agree, the poisonlike system is worse, and there are so many solutions that After a while, you just won't die of it.
    I think that most of the tension comes from the fear of losing a character, and as you perfectly said, the randomness of the zombie infection. UL didn't deliver (especially on Lethal, the hardcore difficulty can't be so soft on these things).
    But hey, still love the game.
    Thanks for the great content, really like the format!

    Like the content over-all. I've been watching you for a while now Mr. Fox and in my pure honesty. I wouldn't survive lethal zone without your good contents.
    Perhaps what I'm gonna say to people reading is to share my experience in playing Lethal Zone for quite sometime under your guides.
    I started with what I call a "Powerhouse". 3 old hero community members packed up with weapons and rucksacks needed to start a new community. Dont forget that they carry over the items that they have previously on your last community. This will totally ramp-up your start.
    The skills they have are Automechanics, Surgery, and Utilities going to Electrical. Automechanics because cars are hard to come by and easily destroyed. Pathology or Surgery, dont matter as long as you have a paramedic. Utilities coz we need electricity and water. They all have Gunslingers and Stealth. One has a Swordplay, one has Endurance and one has a Powerhouse. Anything with an insta-kill is very useful.
    I'm currently at Meagher Valley at the Brewery and following Mr. Fox's how to farm influence guide. I currently have 3 Hydroponics, Maxed Workshop and Infirmary, Lounge and a Trader Depot. If you notice I dont have any watchtowers. Honestly I never got the chance to build one Sniper Tower but having Watchtower level 2 is really nothing in this base especially with the brewing going on so I always get seiges no matter what. Plus lethal zone gives you plus 30 loudness so you're always noisy even when youre doing nothing so I get rid of it.. But since I bought something from the old community. I have 2 50 cal weapons and honestly, we always kick-ass. Plus the perk of raining blood samples makes it better.
    Now blood samples? Yeah the Bio-chem station is really a BIG HELP! The CNC mill, and the Fireworks Station and weapons are your TRUE BEST FRIEND. You need 3 C4s to kill a plague heart or 2 C4s and 1 Bloater Grenade. (Proven effective) Plus Scentblock will give you sure win against plague hearts.
    I also agree to Mr. Fox's dont raise your standing fast. I learned it the hard way losing one community member. And Juggernauts are not the threat. Its the Freakin Ferals who just spawns anywhere. Like he said, learn to be quiet. Guns with silencers here dont really work. Its better to use the Firework gun and stealth kills. Stealth is MUST go to skill whenever you have the chance at least to my opinion.
    I couldn't make it without Mr. Fox's tips. I hope his contents work to everyone like mine playing in Lethal Zone. :) :) :)
    Thank you BIG BOSS (Y) (Y)

    I think one of my biggest problems with Lethal/SOD2 in general is how, past a certain point, most of your "skill" in the game comes from how well you can manipulate game mechanics, vs actually roleplaying survival in the zombie apocalypse. For example, keeping your standing low to keep the difficulty low, recruiting and immediately exiling character after character because of undesirable traits or lame hero bonuses, purposefully failing enclave projects because you know they'll offer to join you if you do, promoting and demoting leaders just to build all their facilities, ignoring "moral dilemmas" because they have literally no consequences, the "siege glitch," the disparity between actual audio cues and what the game considers "noise," and so on.
    These are all fundamental problems with the way the game is designed, though. I think Lethal difficulty really brings out *both* the best *and* the worst that SOD2 has to offer.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  3 года назад +3

      That's the goal of every game though. Your goal is to find out the vulnerabilities of the game while avoiding the strengths of the game.
      We gamers do that in pretty much every game. The issue is that the vulnerabilities are so extreme that they allow you to negate the game.

    • @ReclaimerX22
      @ReclaimerX22 3 года назад

      @@GitGudFox After rereading my comment, I just want to clarify that when I said "your skill" I meant "you" in the plural sense, including me as well; not yours specifically, Fox.
      You're right, it's kind of the natural point for us gamers to reach. We like to "optimize," and SOD2 reaches a point where it's too easy to play optimally, just because the game is quite shallow as it is.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  3 года назад +4

      It goes even beyond that.
      If you have to mow the grass, after you do it a few times, you'll start thinking of ways to do it better. If you have to vacuum your house, and it takes forever, you might wonder if you're just doing things inefficiently and search for a better way to do it.
      It's like a component of our humanity to want to do things better. Some people get stuck and set in their ways, and they sort of reach the limit of their capabilities. Sometimes that doesn't matter and the old ways wound up being similarly as good as current ways.
      But it's just sort of a genetic thing within us to want to organize and optimize things to run smoother, to oil the gears in all things.

    • @AcornPlays
      @AcornPlays 3 года назад +1

      @@GitGudFox I feel like the issue is with a somewhat buggy game like SoD2, a lot of the time optimisation is basically "how can I break this game to entirely negate the difficulty curve?"

    I´m right there with you, the knowledge I remembered from before I stopped playing for 6 months was enough to get me trough the lethal zone even though I loosed a bunch of skill. Also the high material cost on crafting makes me feel that´s the ideal for me now, I am currently on the second legacy (taking it slow) I already finished clearing the PH and I have so much ammo and resources of all types even with the new penalties on increased consumption of them thanks to the way I built up strong trading and a bunch of allies near my house.
    I tried replicating the "bloater" thing on my second legacy with a couple of PH while wearing scentblock and watching closely and I think that the theroy is not what was happening. For whatever reason it seems zombies on fire made specifically from the pyrolauncher causes a massive damage on the PH when they run into it, I tried checking with other fire sources and they didn´t do any damage to the PH that was anywhere comparable, but the pyrolaunchers fire ligthing other zombies that ran into it just destroyed it. The reason you would get the little 2 influence seems to be simply because you killed a certain amount of regular zombies because of the fire, since even when killing those I also get a bit of influence from them.
    A thing I have noticed is that just like you said melee is way more used in lethal, I pretty much only use guns on the ferals, and I have also gotten sort of used to the triple plague ferals, I was already used to carrying fuel bombs from my time on nightmare (I like bladed more then striking because of lethality and quick standing kills, but bladed wasn´t good to deal with big numbers, so there I would use the fuel bombs and bladed would kill anyone left), so whenever I run into the triple ferals I just fuel bomb them, gain some distance, burn again and then shoot, even withouth gunslinger it has been easy. I make sure to always keep them on hand, so when I use them I go and get more.
    I have been going gun ho on acquiring standing. I pretty much go crazy murdering zombies and looting everything on my sight, and have been having fun doing so, even more then on nightmare. On the topic of allies I have been only recruiting if the ally bonus isn´t good, if they are only friendly I try not to recruit from them since if they give me caravans or food and theater (or whatever the name is that gives food and morale) I don´t want them having little manpower and putting the bonus on risk, same with the soldiers that have free recruitment since they can get up to 3 ammo rucksacks for sale per day.
    Also I need your quick opinion on a character I happened to get and I don´t know what to do, she had an amazing greenish blue coordinated outfit so I recruited her and she came with keeps hidden pockets, eats like a bird, and had sewing as a fifth skill, so she already has the +3 item stacking, and I keep debating whether to make her a looting specialist with backpacking, stealth, bladed, gunslinger since she will get to carry a lot. Or a PH murderer with Powerhouse, resourcefulness, close combat, gunslinger with these one she would have +6 item stacking. Both sound amazing and I just cant make up my mind.

    • @Mkronox
      @Mkronox 3 года назад

      On the topic of the pyrolauncher again, I tried out the BML12, and it takes almost a full magazine of it to kill a PH which is just terrible it sometimes feels like it does no damage on some shots, but from what I saw, I feel that every zombie on pyrolauncher fire seems to deal enough contact damage to the PH that its comparable to it getting shot with the bml once or twice. So something went really wrong in the coding there.

    • @Mkronox
      @Mkronox 3 года назад

      Also hostile enclaves have become easier to deal with then on nightmare thanks to the triple feral hordes, just pull one to them and they will more then likely die, plus the feral horde is fast so it wont take to long to lure them into the enemies. I feel the only time hostile humans on lethal could be a problem would be on the trader legacy, or the warlord legacy final mission.

A video I seen was someone lured a bloater into the room with the plague heart and through a fire source to blow up the bloater and the plague heart instantly. I'm wondering if a bloater gas grenade will do the trick along with a fire source.

I finished lethal zone with all 4 legacies without any deaths, and now started a new playthrough for fun (no legacies, no imported people, nothing). I recruited a gardening guy because I forgot that one of my guys already had gardening. Then I did not recruit the automechanics guy (the one that leaves his automechanic community) because I forgot my mechanic died already. Then a bloater spawned UNDER my car (car was stopped, I got in, bloarter went off immediately) and killed someone from my community... :D Paying attention and right mindset does matter....

    If I were to get my friends into this game I would want to do a co-op run with them, and I reckon the best difficulty for an immersive, challenging yet casual game is nightmare-level combat and the rest lethal zone difficulty. It makes the world feel more believable in a way, and I definitely agree that it's more gratifying. I also reckon it has the most balanced economy of the zones. Too bad lethal zone combat just feels gratuitous and shoe-horned in (cause it literally was, my OG Xbox 1 can really struggle to keep up, also makes zombie spawning laughable).

      Its just absurdly unrealistic artificial difficulty by changing numbers in a file. The spawns are so ramped up that you cant even clear some buildings because they spawn inside the same areas you just cleared once you walk away to clear the other side of the building. You look away, and look back, zombies will spawn right in front of you. It’s just stupid and lazy.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  3 года назад

      That typically means the game is not mechanically challenging as in you don't need a high level of reliable aim, platforming, dodging/attacking etc, and it's instead more about knowing the methods.
      That's pretty much how SoD is. Having a high level of mechanical skill is definitely very helpful, but it takes more effort to develop such skill, and it's ultimately overkill for the game.

    The 5 min death timer should still count down even afterwards taking the cure,
    1. Sometime in the future they get sick again, personal storylines
    2. They turn into a screamer in the next few days while sleeping, triggering a base attack.
    3. They are cured
    4. They turn into a feral when the timer ends, providing cut scenes.
    5. They survive, but are 1/2 zombie. Zombies ignore them, but other humans attack you, except your survivors won’t kill them.

    I found nightmare zone challenging in the first half. Having to use stealth a lot more for example. Without decent mods and multiple outposts, lack of community members, I found myself struggling a little bit.
    The 2nd half of the play through was a lot more manageable. Getting the best mods, guns, more community members, making a base defensible and self sufficient, getting members to hero status, etc all helped a lot
    I'm a little bit apprehensive of playing lethal zone, especially the first 5 to 10 hours, starting up again
    How do you deal with the double food problem? On nightmare it was 1.5 times more, and I found that tough to compensate for. Had to build a farm and garden and max out both
    And yes, the amount of loot you get up to dread mode is insane. I found myself filling up trunks of excess cars just to be able to store it. Even by the end of nightmare mode I found myself with way more of most items then I was ever going to use. The beginning was rough though

    • @bucephalusv.6071

      Its a tedious routine in lethal at the early stage. You have to call on new enclaves when you can and check with them from time to time whether they are selling materias or any rucksacks that you need. Also dont choose utilities skill for your starter. Choose gardening or lichenology if you can so you can use the seeds. The food outpost are fine but i dont usually utilize them especially if theres conflict with its map position.

      @@bucephalusv.6071 thanks, I'm midway through now, and yes, lack of loot is rough at the start. A bigger problem are those bloody blood ferals!! Especially when they spawn three of the f****rs on you!
      Added to which It seems that everything costs more and plague hearts have more hitpoints/spawn a blood feral. More annoyingly there's tonnes of them... That's my biggest criticism so far. Finished my first playthrough on standard, and I wanna get legacy boons for lethal just... cause i can.
    Even on standard it felt like there's a lot of push on using ranged weapons, melee just eats stamina too much and zombies can hurt you while you're stuck doing the killing blow on one which seems like a non-option in lethal going by this video.
    Even when doing plague hearts I'd throw a grenade in and run to my car, then just run the zombies all over. Perhaps I'll play differently with the .50 cals I obtained prior to finishing, but maybe I should instead start a new save on lethal so I don't lose my 3 good characters from making such a jump in difficulty.
    But as I've said many times in 10+ years of gaming; playing on hardest difficulty you tend to learn quite quickly how to make it easier on yourself, then you're gonna be really good at the game quite quickly and make any previous difficulty seem too easy. Might not be true if you're not that good at finding cheese mechanics I guess but hey ho.

    • @GitGudFox
      @GitGudFox  2 года назад

      Don't send anyone into Lethal Zone that you aren't prepared to loes. The jump from Standard to Lethal is huge. The game rules are very different. Here are some examples.
      1) Killing a plague heart does not kill any of the plague zombies. They will all still be there.
      2) Blood plague death timer is less than 5 minutes.
      3) 1 plague zombie bite is about 60% infection
      4) Blood Plague Ferals replace all regular ferals and have armored heads that resist a few headshots
      5) Sound is extremely loud. Shooting an unsilenced gun makes noise larger that your minimap radius.
      6) Everything is really expensive. Building costs are more than doubled in most cases.
      7) Half of the buildings are pre-looted, and the general quality of loot is decreased.
      8) Everything can cause injuries even basic zombie scratches
      9) Damage is massively higher. Characters with the basic 100HP can be killed in moments if they get stunned through knockdown
      10) Enemy humans can headshot you which can, but not always, nearly 1 shot kill you from 100% HP to 1HP + 99% full trauma debuffs.
      11) Cars break quickly, gas costs twice as much to make, and cars have worse gas mileage than normal.
      12) Zombie density is greatly increased, freak zombies can appear earlier, freak zombies can appear in hordes like triple blood ferals, and the sizes of hordes and the amount of zombies per horde is increased.

    I hear what you saying about the disease system we had in SoD1 and i think its not going to work just by changing that one mechanic, considering the way the zombies infinitely spawn right on top of the player or in the same room with the player it would feel really cheap to get some incurable disease from them, it will only lead to frustration. Core mechanics of this game like spawning and the inconsistent geometry, the simple npc AI are built around the forgiving nature of the standard zone where if a game pulls some nonsense on you instead of getting frustrated you say hey its no big deal nothing happened.
    Even the dread difficulty feels like a chore having to repeatedly mow down 50 zombies anywhere you go and anything you do having drove over two hordes in a small suburb street just to turn around and see it immediately repopulated with infinite zombies running after your car is not interesting the fifth time around just like repeatedly killing the same 35 plague hearts on a lethal map is a chore and not fun.
    The lethal zone is not a true difficulty, its cheaply tries to bully the player to create a sense of weakness to the environment, today i was standing on top of my car near an enclave and kept firing my raiders AR-15 to spawn in a lot of zombies and all the zombies ignored the enclave survivors a few feet away firing their bolt action and stood there moaning and calling to me, i don't know when your bullshit meter ticks off but mine was already capped out.
    I know you said we shouldn't be too picky on your selection of words but you really kept using the words "feeling cunning" but there isn't anything cunning and witty about fixing a forced negative modifier by randomly finding an item that negates the said modifier.
    This game is a buggy mess on standard zone with inconsistencies and getting stuck in geometry is a regular occurrence where a zombie clips through your car, you can't land a hit on it but the zombie can still hit you and give you the said disease which you are advising. There are many bugs like zombies teleporting on top of billboard and biting the player, Juggernaut slamming an enclave survivor and player taking damage while standing far away, freak and mob zombies manifesting in front of your car and so on.
    I rather see Undead Lab fix this issues than see them keep adding worthless skins and guns that do the same thing as the last gun did. With the current state of this game i will be totally staying out of their SoD3. At this rate the entire gaming industry can burn to hell and i won't give damn, there is always a nice book to read and great time to be spend with people you love. I absolutely advice parents not to allow their children play this game on its unfair difficulties as it causes frustration which are unhealthy for the children.

    well I'm playing lethal, day 10 now, 6 guys/gals and a level 2 infarmary, lvl 2 workshop, lvl 2 farm, lvl3 command center, and my stock piles are good, but have yet to hit a heart, because I had to do build up the enclaves to get to this point, and that's the problem, not everyone wants to be a trader and have to do those wasted missions, especially when they throw 3 of them at once and 2 or 1 of your enclaves leave because you couldn't get to them in time. They need more than 1 way to do it, but I see people doing lethal runs in 2 hours, which I'm guessing, I still suck at feral and I'm a FPS player, I just don't like the triple teams and endless bugs of zombies that literally spawn right on top of you. How you can kill everything in a 2 mile radius, but oh wait, there's still more, it's like WTF, find a better way to do it.

      Unless you run away a lot. Running away and returning later defeats most enemies in the game.
      Probably the most OP thing in SoD2.

    You know, it's weird. One minute I can sneak on foot all the way across the map and never get seen once, then the next I get spotted by one zombie and wind up on a roof surrounded by zombies, juggs and ferals.

      The SoD experience in a nutshell.
      I tend to use stealth and pair it with a shotgun as a contingency plan. Loud as hell but, it's better than dying.

      Anytime I am like "Its just next door, I can walk" it turns into losing my best character, cause I wasn't prepared.

    If the devs really wanted to make lethal difficulty punishing but also interesting even by just changing numbers in program, they can make injuries recovery much slower to an extent closer to reality. Well, just don't make building a facility like building a city and all those increased crafting demands just make me feel this is the cheapest way to do a programmer's job. In a word, the reality is the hardest and an intrinsically interesting game in my opinion. I played Project Zomboid but I like this game because it is more finished and looks better and base/npc management is fun. I cannot say they should do much more work like adding more contents into the game instead of cosmetic stuff and difficulty settings, because sod2 is already finished and we paid for this game 2 years ago. The better way of doing this is waiting for sod3 or something. But still, if someone really wants to tweak the game a little bit more, I think it still needs to be planned or designed or prototyped and I don't think it's ultra hard. Sure, I will keep playing this game, but I think if a game is really well made, you can still make money from it after 10 years.

      I don't think the game needs to be any harder for the most part. It needs to be deeper and more complex.

    I like everything apart from the amount of zombies. There are just too many.
