Van I've spent many hours sitting beside Harold watching how his hands move when he's carving, I see the same movement in your hands, it's great to see!
How simple with the proper SHARP tools!
I’ve been struggling for months with much more complicated instructions from dozens of RUclips teachers.
Maybe I’ve (and they’ve) been overthinking it.
Thanks for the tutorials!
Love your work and very clear instructions. Thank you very much from a learner lol.
Thank you so much. I am so glad that you decided to make these videos. You are a good teacher. So many teachers that I find on YT are teaching a full carving, which is great. However they whip through it and don't really get into this kind of detail. I am new to carving so I really appreciate the finer points you make. For instance, using your thumb as an anchor when cutting curves, etc. I am sure I would figure these things out after some time, but the hint is nice. I wish you had started long ago. I want watch more of your advice.
Thank you for the encouragement. I will be putting out weekly videos and would be glad for any suggestions on what type of videos you would like to see.
@@vankellywoodcarvings Just one thing that comes to mind is carving mouth/chin without any facial hair. I don't know if you have any guidance for female faces as well. It seems that everyone wants to carve ragged old men. :) BTW, I still struggle to cut a nice curve across the grain. I think my knife is sharp enough, but don't know how to test sharpness.
Glad I came across your videos! Thank you👍🏼👍🏼
Really appreciate your videos, excellent narration, and great clarity of the video.
Thanks!
Van, Thanks for very simple process for carving an eye. I hope to see more videos from on how you carve. I have asked this question to several other carvers and always get interesting responses. Why do you carve the eye on the corner of the block of wood? The eyes are usually carved on the flats of the block. Please do not take this as a negative on the video. I just find it interesting that books and many carvers use this process for instructing.
Very simple! The reason I use the corner is because your face naturally comes to a point with your nose being the farthest out. So using the corner keeps from having do a bunch of extra work just creating another corner (point) for the nose, eyes and face area.
Thank you.
Awsome work! Great videos! Ive been watching almost to much lol. Might be an over asked question, but whats a good size for a v tool? Mainly doing trees, characters, and wood spirits. Is there a one size fits all? Or any recommendations on a must have few
Thank you 👍👍👍👍🍺😎
Do you treat your basswood? Yours cuts better than mine.
Nice
