This was a slow pit stop even for 1950. In the 1937 Grand Prix racing season the Mercedes team usually changed all four tires and refueled the car in 32-38 seconds. In the 1937 German Grand Prix at Nurburgring the pit crew of Bernd Rosemeyer - driving an Auto Union - changed tyres and fueled his car in a record 25 seconds.
@@noag829 it existed prior to 1950 but wasn't called F1 in 20s and 30s. That's why most cars in the early days were prewar designs prior to WW2 stopping things
+Konstantinos Skamagas Well, a 67s stop or a 3s stop is a big difference. If only modern F1 had some limitations on pit crew to make the stops longer and more error prone. Would make it more interesting.
Actually in very early racing, it was considered proper to give a British driver a cup of tea at a pit stop! Of course everything took so long at the early pit stops (even longer than in the video) that it didn't even matter! Bugatti was the only team concerned with time at pit stops. The wheels were made that each time they were changed, the car also received new brakes in the same motion (in the 1930's).
formula 1 rules state that you're not allowed to refuel anymore. I would imagine that would be due to the numerous accidents where fuel has been spewed all over the pit lane.
***** Rules change, I seriously doubt 1950's would have been any closer with extra people. And the video is about how pitsops have evolved, not "OMG people in the 1950's were so SLOW"
wonder what the 50's drivers and pit crews would feel if they would be to not be involved in the evolution of F1 and where to watch this for the first time.
The difference is there are 21 people doing the pit stop now versus 4 people doing the pit stop then. I'd like to know how quick they could've done a pit stop in 1950s with 21 people.
It's always amused me how some people can't fathom liking something merely because *they* happen to not like it. Personally I don't care for Nascar but at least I have the ability to simply let people like what they want without trying to shame them for it...
WelshWidgetMan2O1O but you are trying to shame them by insulting their choice of likes and dislikes and saying "Personally I don't care for Nascar but at least I have the ability to simply let people like what they want without trying to shame them for it." making you try to sound better then them, you are aware that in saying that you are actually going against what you believe in!
TheGordoncd Its pretty ridiculous now. Ferrari did a 1.95 with Alonso in Japan 2013. I think Redbull in 2013 had the best consistency in modern F1 constantly hitting 2.4's.
The 1950 cut shows how they refill the tank too. They don't do so on the 2013 stop, you should have shown one where they refuel aswell D: it just takes two seconds longer.
what we are seeing here is an early incarnation of the impact wrench. Very slow compared to today's air driven tools, maybe only 1 impact per second. And the operator had to make his own sound effect too...whrrrrr!!!
Even in the 50s they could have imagined that there may be some more elaborate technique than hammering the nut open ;-) On the other side: If only 4 members would be allowed today, things would look different. Likewise, if in the 50s the number of mechanics would not have been limited.
The evolution is great but as a comparison it is a bit distorted: there is refuel in the first clip, but no refuel in the second clip as far I can observe, and not less then 4 crew members are working a single tire, opposed to 3 crew members in total in the first clip :-)
The 1950 was painful to watch
yes, for us, very painfull, but they was usually seeing horses and carriages, maybe not so boring :)
@@pimpimprofiletwo9548 the car became standard affair in the 1910s...they were already used to them

Only 1 minute pitstop
1950: two men, 67 secs
today: 67 men, two secs
and 67 like when i see this comment
dont lie its only 16 men
@@hopehope3285 its a joke shut up
Germany '19: 16 Men, 50 seconds
That was damn close.
Hard to call.

At one point in the 1950 part I thought the driver was going to get out and light one up...
mr_kamacuzy He actually did, he took a power nap !, Then had a soda to wake himself up !
Lol
I'd love to hear a modern day f1 driver if he saw his mechanic beat the crap out of his wheelnut with a hammer
They are 'knock on' wheels and even come with their own lead hammer
Looks like Clarkson was on to something
Bottas
1 guy to change both tires, 2 guys to polish the tiny screen. WTF 1950 - get your shit together!
Don't hope that these guys get payed by the hour...
Haha . Working less than 2 seconds
KoivuTheHab Wow , you are so racist !
Just kidding bro :))
in 2013 driver dont have time to drink water
Sylvester Vogelenzang de Jong hahahaha 😂
Yo soy tu amigo fiel /:2221-
1950 took more than 50% of the video xD
loool
+Konstantinos Skamagas Well, a 67s stop or a 3s stop is a big difference. If only modern F1 had some limitations on pit crew to make the stops longer and more error prone. Would make it more interesting.
I bet if those guys somehow saw this video of 2013 there jaws would drop info the ground.
But they didn't polish the windshield. Smh
i literally took a sip of beer and missed it lol
Haha I fuckin lost it when he pulled up and the guy just starts wailing on the tires with a hammer
0:00 - 1:21
Lewis Hamilton GP Germany 2019 xD
LMAO did he have to wait till the end to clean the windshield??? like he didnt have enough time?? ahahahahaha
The second crew was quicker than the first crew. Not by much though.
The second one is mostly waiting
HOLY FUCK!!! I didn't have TIME to observe! JESUS that's AWESOME!!!
I had to watch it again just to see of they even changed the tires lol.
That feeling of finishing your 3 second task and walking it off.
its actually 1.9 seconds
Big difference between 4 and 22 people. Wonder how long it would have taken with just 4 guys.
"Only 4 crew members including the driver are allowed to work on the car".
7 times more work to do per 1 crew member.
too slow, saw them touch the car as I blinked.
i couldnt help but laugh at the 1950s one. someone needs to add some Benny Hill theme
+Rusty Nugget HAHAHA
0:36 This is taking a while, Sam. Have a can of beer while you wait.

It would have taken longer than that if he had to re-fuel as well. This was just a tire change out. That's why it was so fast.

I hope Rosberg has a couple of 67sec pit stops on Sunday ;)

2 freeken seconds is CRAZY
This really needed a slow-mo for the end, because goddamn.
Damn! I became so emotional after watching this. This video clip moved me. Awesome pit stop.
"just 67 seconds", but still faster than the local car dealer
just 67 seconds later xD

Impact guns and not being allowed to refuel is a real difference. Look at that poor guy bashing away at each tire.
That's just incredible.
wow. almost as quick as my love-making
Still more interesting than nascar
Just depends on what one likes . . .

racing is racing and I for one like NASCAR.
Moim zdaniem różnica jest widoczna, w 1950 nie mieli kasków na głowach ;)
Changing tires like a boss
I hope the catcher gets bonus pay for hazard work! Great Video.
The driver from the 50's could've had lunch.
1950 : driver pit stops....orders pizza....
In 1950...they need 2 minute to finish changing the wheels
But now they just need 5 seconds..WOW!!!
Yeah, looks like they used to have just ONE guy doing the tires, and even then it looks like he was using a sledge to get'em off the car.
probably would be done in less then a minute if they used 2 guys just like today...
67 seconds...
Actually 5 seconds is considered slow. 3.5 and down is about average
TheGordoncd Its pretty ridiculous now. Ferrari did a 1.95 with Alonso in Japan 2013. I think Redbull in 2013 had the best consistency in modern F1 constantly hitting 2.4's.
The guy banging on the wheel spinner with a hammer is the most striking part to me!
the pit stops alone are more entertaining than NASCAR

Slick work
The Guy with Hammer: Jeremy Clarkson.
Just amazing to watch it...
The 2013 pit stop should be a world record
4-man pit crews should come back. Driver should also be able to help the process. More chaos, more interesting things, more fun!
This is awesome
I thought the video was going to end by the time I got to see the other pit stop 😂
amazing evolution...!
the guy who change the tire in 1950 lol XD

sukhoy They dont refuel in modern F1 anymore
1:50 I had the feeling that they did not tight the wheel...
In 1950s it needs a year to change the tires haha
F1 today: Blink and you'll miss it...
I think i'll opt for the two stop in the 50's then
Pretty sure he was dipping his biscuits in his tea then ha
They didn't refuel in Melbourne though
+PhoenixNoor nor given the driver two cups of water.
I want the job of the stabilizers the two guys in the middle just holding the car.
I have been playing this over and over, I don't see a difference... not in the very least....
mercedes taking it old school at the german grandprix at a whopping 50 seconds
1:49 Amazing!!!😲😳🤪😱 Changing tyres less than 2 sec.
"Just 67 seconds"
This is called team work
this is called technology and progress :)
True... technology added up to that team:)
what we are seeing here is an early incarnation of the impact wrench. Very slow compared to today's air driven tools, maybe only 1 impact per second. And the operator had to make his own sound effect too...whrrrrr!!!
I will mention though that the 2013 pit stop is in a no refueling race and the ones they do refuel in takes a little longer, not much longer though
My favorite part was when Holland was handed the cup of water.
Well ya...they got more than 4 guys there...
He forgot to change the rear wheels!
I think the motor only spins the front wheels, and you only use the front wheels to turn. So i think the back wheels would last the whole race.
raikkonen2013 He ran out of time. LOL

Funniest video ever I am laughing my ass when he hamering the tire.lol
It does not take that long to clean a tiny little windscreen

And one day flying robots will change everything while he's driving.
1 coffee please :D
1950? Surprised the driver isn't having a smoke while they refuel.
ha ha
that would be a blast!
Obviously 63 years in technological advancements help but it would be interesting to see if F1 only had a 4 more pit crew today...
como ha mejorado y evolucionado la F1
wow!
did someone time both of them? what one was quicker?
Who is The author of this video? How can I obtain permission to display it at the training?
The driver actually can go have a dinner by the time they finish changing the tires
Did anyone refuel the modern F1? I watched ten thousand times and still didn't see it.
Woow!!
2013 F1 > 2022 F1
Fucking awesome
This comparison wasn't fair , they should have used Indy Racing League footage instead of F-1
well.. i gotta say; "respect your elders".
