Well my friend.. at least the small yellow school bus is happy ...hope there's some tree work soooooon 😁😁. . 👍👍.. watch every episode of the barn build.... almost there..👌👌
For trim around the overhead door, you only need a few nails of any kind along the inside edge. The weather seal for the door will cover about 2 inches and secure the trim quite nicely. Just remember to put up the top seal first then the sides so the seal flaps overlap right at the top corners.
Weather seal! I've gotta add that to my list. Thanks for the tip and that makes perfect sense that the seal will be fastened holding it all in. Eggsellent :)
Found you because were going to do a barn very similar to yours with metal. I have done a few other metal buildings but smaller. Watched all of the videos in this playlist. A lot of great ideas in your build. I’ll be watching them a few more times as we go. Thanks for putting these up.
I do the same with measuring, usually I'm pretty close. Hope u get the ends done before the birds start pinching off in them. When they want to nest the war is on. Those entry doors the first thing I do is nail the brick mold to the jamb because they never are on good. Been using those real skinny head screws , not cheap but the holes are small.
Beautiful weather vane Always enjoy your videos and your great sense of 🤠 humor and inspiration. Wish my CAD drawings looked as good as yours One step and one project at a time, but that does not seem to be how life works... lots of projects at same time and not the funding to complete. Have a great day 💫🌲
Spencer, great job here, I hope to build something similar in the near future. If you are considering cellulose insulation for the blown in insulation, you can absolutely do it, but you will need your trusty helper. I did my attic years ago and the kids loaded the cellulose into the rented blower, easy-peasy.
Easy-peasy he says! Okay, I'm gonna go for it. Of course, I'll need to do a few things first to keep that insulation up there and in place, but it's coming along. Thanks for the encouragement man
As a pedantic builder I probably ought to be horrified but your attitude and approach are refreshing 😄 Wee bit nervous for ye working off those ladders but you're getting it done and it's looking good! Lovely weather vane. Heron's are majestic. One day, when I grow up, I hope to get some land and build a barn (I'm 53). 🤪
Yeah those ladders are beyond sketchy and every time I build a building I tell myself "Next time, scaffolding or a lift" and then find myself on the ladders again. You said it! 53 is a good start :)
Watched this from Somerset in England. I liked the down to earth no BS way that you just get on with stuff. Sure, things can always be done differently and maybe better, or not. All in all this was a successful project and encourages and inspires people, who don't necessarily have all the skill sets 100%, to at least go for it without fear of catastrophe. This is a very Nike type project. Just Do It. Yeah, I think you did a good job overall. Like it. Tim Clarke.
I appreciate that perspective. Thanks buddy. I biked through Somerset in the summer of '95 and really liked it. Gorgeous fields of green that time of year :)
I am doing something similar. I bought a quanset hut building i was going to use... but its just too small. So i am going to put 2 containers down like yours, and put a 34' quanset hut "roof section" on containers... so i will have a 32' span between containers.
I mean, are you even building something if you don't have to order something "after the fact"...🤣🤣🤣 I've got some of that neverbilt stuff going on too...
Weather vane needs a cupola. They help vent heat well in summer just need away to plug for winter. Or could make fake one, ether one would make easier to see.
I'm very close to selling the wife on this same(?) project. I know I can't do half the stuff you do, but I've got friends that owe me! I've got carpenters and mechanics that hate electrical, and I am a retired electrician. It should work out, even if it takes a while! You two are very inspiring and make great videos. Keep them coming!
Sounds like you have some good trading in mind! I'm sure it'll work out great for you ... people are always happy to have things wired up right instead of shorting and starting fires all the time :)
I noticed that MSC logo on your containers. I know it stands for Mediterranean shipping company but it also can stand for “Meta Spenser channel” Always enjoy the vids and I think we’ve all under cut ourselves on ordering enough and/or too much materials. Lol
I'm not really a receipt saver -- but I'll try to provide a cost breakdown at the end when the dang thing is all done :) It hasn't been cheap, I can tell you that much, though I'm a cheapskate
With todays lumber prices what is the approximate price for a project like this? Excluding containers prices. If i were to build it with my family as well.
It would kind of depend on some things like: will you insulate? concrete floor? how are you heating and cooling? windows and doors? doing your own excavating? etc. ... ballpark would be something like $25k-$60k
starting to look more legit as more bits get added... rome wasnt built in a day... Will you be painting the containers the same colour as the sidings eventually? Have a great weekend your side and keep safe dude.
I'm torn about that container color issue: I like the containers and their original character, but the building would be tied together better if painted. have an opinion?
@@metaspencer well of course it's your choice and if it doesnt faze you then dont hassle with it. I was thinking it would certainly look more like an entire unit if it was the exact same colour as the main structure. But perhaps keeping them the colour they are is just what will make it unique... sometimes things just have to be slightly different so as to highlight that it isnt the usual boring norm. you could perhaps call it the lego barn... :-D
I am planning to do the same thing with my own project I am going to order a 40 ft container as workshop as we build our house still thank you for the tips and hints when constructing such a barn the only question is is it cheaper than a normal barn ? And is worth it ? Furthermore is it not beter to put some rough cut wood as cladding as it give a bit more country look ? Last question what is the span between both containers I am planning for 6, 5 mtr as 6 mtr concreteslabs are available in the place where I build no concrete casting required
Hi Pieter! That sounds like a great plan. When we built our house we would have really benefitted from a shipping container for storage. It'll be a great way to protect your supplies and tools while you build. I don't think shipping containers save you money when building around them, but that depends on what you pay for your container. They also add some challenges since they're steel haha. With that said they LOOK COOL and are a fun challenge to build with. If you want wood cladding then go for it! Personally I like the look of the containers in the raw. As for the distance between my containers I went with about 8.2 meters. What kind of house are you building?
I am planning to build a log house with rough round logs , and a container is indeed a good storage and work place as keeping everything on the work place is a nightmare I have been there once Anyway thanks for your reply and can wait for the final episode about the main door and 100 m2 of covered place is quite awesome
When I plan out a project my brain keeps working on it while sleep. I wake up and have trouble going to sleep until I've actually placed the material order. I'm getting the slab poured for my shop next week and I'm going away for a month to let my brain rest.
I agree, you should fire that member of the crew that does the ordering. He/she must also be colour blind because that colour combination is atrocious.
Spencer, you are a kindred soul when it comes to the halfassery of building things. I salute your never say quit attitude!
Halfassery brothers unite! good to hear it buddy
That "take off list" is the bane of many a DIYer. And the joy of the building supply industry. Love the barn, love the channel. Thanks for sharing.
You said it man. Absolutely. Thanks for the boost of support :)
“I consulted my CAD drawing….” Lol. Too funny. Love it.
You can blow in your own insulation. BTDT. The Orange Big Box store rents the blowers for free with the purchase of the insulation.
Oh dang, FREE is the magic word that gets my attention. I'll have to check that out and thanks for the tip!
Mellissa did good. I was all prepared to make a comment about replacing the hinge screw, but you were on top of it. Thanks for sharing your progress.
Thanks Cynthia! Yeah, those hinge screws make all the difference :)

These are awesome. My neighbor and I built a shop and he uses a yellow legal pad as his autocad.
I should graduate to those legal pads as I hear they have lines :)
Love watching your videos. And I especially love the honesty in them when mistakes are made.
Much appreciated man! Great to hear
Delightful presentation. (Scary 🦀 walk on the wet metal roof-🤨) I look forward to more Metaspencer videos.
You said it: the crab walk was too much! :)
Please do an episode about cost of build when your done, seems like a really cool project! Really enjoy the series!
I don't really save receipts, but I'll try to give some kind of estimate in the end

It’s coming along. Those front office people ordering the wrong stuff. Dang it. Looking good & can’t say I miss that snow.

Love the sea cans , being placed on the outside of structure, several people I know of have the same plan, really like that functional building .
It's been working out pretty well ... thanks man! I haven't heard "sea cans" before. great term!

I put a cupola on one of our other farm buildings and it's really great ... nice to have that ventilation
This weather vane is beautiful!

Thanks! Yeah, we're pretty happy with it and it's a heron, a bird we are pretty crazy about :)
The material ordering crew strikes again! They must be related to the clean up crew
Yeah I think you might be onto something. Their paychecks all go to the same address :)
Doing a awesome Spencer keep up the good work if it's one thing or another the ground guys did it
